Please Note: Stats and sites change often in the Social Media world, therefore, some of the information in this presentation may have changed since its creation.
Does this sound like You? I can’t be everywhere at once, so I’ll pick one or two Social Media sites and join those.
I don’t have time for Social Media.
It isn’t as important now as it will be when I’m published, I’ll wait until then to worry about it.
I don’t know where to start or what to do.
Social Media is a time waster. I need to write.
What is a Platform? A horizontal surface or structure with a raised level above the surrounding area.
What is Social Media? It’s people—specifically people having conversations who are building relationships and trust, and who also offer recommendations by word of mouth—a community.

Where are YOU?
Your Community Is Everywhere
Online:
You need
ONE PLACE on the Web
that leads readers back to
YOU!
It can be a blog or a static website, but it should ultimately
be YOUR name.

What do you think of when you hear the term
Social Media?
Do these images pop to mind?
Or these?
You’re RIGHT!
You can’t be everywhere at once.
~ But, your profile CAN ~
You don’t have the time.~ But automated apps DO ~
Decision Time
Choose which Social Media sites you want to market your profile and link back to your site.
These are the sites where u will be less active, but by having a profile presence, they can still find u.
While You’re Making Decisions
If you are the sort of person who doesn’t like receiving tons of email or you feel overwhelmed, consider setting up a separate Social Media email. This way these email alerts aren’t interfering with your regular important emails.
Has over 100 million videos
A site where anyone can create a free account and upload videos to their channel for others to watch. You can friend people, follow people and channels, make comments, embed yours and other people’s videos onto your blog or website, or link to your FB or Twitter page.
I use my channel to host my video book trailers as a way to embed & link my video to other places on the Web.
Has over 200 million blogs
Blogs are similar to websites, but are updated more often with posted material in reverse chronological order—meaning you see the latest post first. They may include keyword tags to help readers find blog posts on particular topics. Blogs are usually available as feeds and often allow others to comment. Bloggers work to increase followers.
Blogs are EASY!
You don’t have to be a talented graphic designer or have a website design degree to create or update a blog. You don’t need expensive software. Blogger has made it very simple with their online tools and tutorials. That is why so many people are now blogging and have turned to blogs for their websites.
Bio and photo of YOU
Info on your books and a way to purchase them, including signed copies, not just Amazon or a link to an online store
Several ways to follow or subscribe to your blog by different e-readers, email, social media sites, etc.
Ways to contact you or to leave a comment
Your blog/website should have:
Calendar of upcoming events how to book you for speaking engagements, booksignings, bookclub events, etc.
I use the Google Calendar and embed it on my blogs. That way I only have to update it once and the updates auto-post everywhere I’ve set it up.
Content that is relevant to what you write, not just your work. Give people useful information.
Your blog/website should have:
Isn’t a place to play and waste time, but it can be.
Is a better marketing tool through networking than paying for advertising.
Allows communication, interaction, & direct access to consumers. It isn’t about blasting company marketing messages.
Has 800 million users, 50% login daily or every other day.
Requires you to create a Personal Profile with an email.
Users can create a private profile for personal use & Professional Pages for businesses, communities, and celebrity profiles. There are significant differences between them.
Personal profiles will only allow you to send a private message up to 20 people at once without it being flagged as spam & limits you to 5,000 friends.
A Facebook Page allows you to have unlimited likes to your page. People who like your page do not have to be friends on your personal profile wall. It’s a way to allow them to follow your updates, events & announcements.
Personal profiles allow you to accept or reject friend requests from people. You can limit who sees your photos, videos, and wall posts.
Pages allows you to review stats as to how many people are talking about your page by commenting, liking and sharing your posts.
People play games on FB, which are operated & developed by 3rd party apps. If you don’t want to waste time playing games, you will need to block or ignore them when you receive requests or suggestions. Some 3rd party game apps have viruses that could
attack your FB acct or your computer. FB doesn’t provide great customer support, so be careful which 3rd party apps you allow.
Is not the place to post personal updates that you don’t want people to know, otherwise protect your tweets.
Is great for posting news related events, issues, or interesting facts.
Allows you to retweet other content related to your topic. Sharing info & promoting others is expected & will encourage others to retweet you.
Twitter is more about following people (strangers) who post about things & news you're interested in. Likewise, you want to attract followers who are interested in the topics you post.
Each post is limited to 140 characters, no photos are allowed in posts, only links.
People post statements, news, verses, quotes, status updates, or a list of other tweeters to check out.
You cannot prevent certain people from following you, unless you protect all your tweets, and/or require everyone to request to follow you, or you block certain individuals.
3rd party apps on Twitter are geared toward how to better use Twitter & make the most of it rather than a bunch of games like on FB.
You can save specific searches on topics and it will auto-update that search if you click on it later. You can create lists of people to follow & who post on related topics. People can follow the lists you create, gaining you more exposure.
Allows you to set up RSS feeds from blog sites that post on topics of interest & related to your content. These will auto-post. You can continue to work, write, or do whatever it is you do.
HootSuiteA Social Media manager for FB, Twitter, LinkedIn & Google+
Shows who stopped following you. Unfollow people who don’t follow back.
Requires people to type in a key word to stop Twitter spammers. It will not accept new followers until they go thru this process.
Allows people to post photos on Twitter. It’s the #1 Twitter app. (http://twitpic.com)
Short Links – Creates shorter links in place of a long, wordy link
Feed Reader – Allows blog posts to be sent to you
Avatar – Images people use for their profile instead of a photo
Lurkers – Readers who follow others, but rarely comment
Threads – Posts on a common theme or topic
Widgets – Unique visuals that can be used on blogs or websites to promote other blogs, websites, Twitter or FB pages
Cultural Differences in Various Social Media
I don’t recommend setting twitter feeds to auto-post on FB. Choose one feed from your blog & limit them to keep from losing FB friends & likes.
I do recommend linking your blog to your Goodreads Author page & Amazon Author Central Page.
Short Links
There are Web-based apps that turn long links into short links that do not take up so many lines or character spaces, such as Tiny Url or Bit.ly.

becomes
http://on.fb.me/fgxeEW
Bit.ly - Cut & paste the url in the text block to shorten it. You will have the option to auto-post to your Twitter pg. (http://bit.ly)
RSS Feeds & Feed ReadersRemember the Twitter Feed Application?
RSS Feed—Really Simple Syndication. Allows you to subscribe to content on blogs & other social media and have it delivered to you thru a feed.
Feed Reader—An app that syncs all your subscribed blogs & downloads them to one place so you can read them. Instead of you going to it, the content comes to you.
RSS Feeds An RSS Feed is not a simple matter of copying the url address. On Blogger, scroll down to the bottom & click on the Subscribe to: Posts (Atom) link. Then go to the url status bar & copy the link, paste it into your Feed Reader as directed or click on the Subscribe Now button & follow the directions.
Non-Blogger sites, look for the RSS orange square symbol to find the feed.
RSS Feeds & Feed Readers
There are lots of different Feed Readers
Feedburner.com
Feedblitz.com
Bloglines.com
Google Feedburner
My Google Feed Reader takes out the graphics & loads each blog post header & a snippet of the 1st sentence.
If I click on a blog header, the rest of the post opens with the graphics. If I click again, it takes me to the original blog.
