Building Design Challenge Moonee Ponds Central School is getting a new building.

While the design and plans for our new building have been finalised this term you and your team have the opportunity to present an alternative vision.

Modern buildings come in many shapes and forms…

... both inside …

…and outside.

The School of Art, Design and Media at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

School buildings also have a variety of purposes.

THE CENTRE FOR IDEAS, VICTORIAN COLLEGE OF THE

ARTS, MELBOURNE

Page 6: Building Design Challenge

A visual and performing arts high school in Los Angeles, USA. This campus has seven buildings: four classroom

buildings, a library, a cafeteria and a

professional performing arts

theatre.

Your presentation must include…

Page 8: Building Design Challenge

… a timeline of how your group will work on this term’s project.Include jobs to be done and who is to do them.

Page 9: Building Design Challenge

… two plans and one elevation drawn to scale. (The first plan is to be of the whole building on the site while the second is to be a close-up of a special element of the project)

Page 10: Building Design Challenge

… detailed costing of one aspect of your plan.

Page 11: Building Design Challenge

… a graph showing the results of a survey you’ve carried out connected to the project.

Page 12: Building Design Challenge

… some tessellation you’ve included somewhere within your finished design.

Page 13: Building Design Challenge

… a concept web detailing all the maths your group used while doing this project.

Page 14: Building Design Challenge

… a model of your design with detail added to one main feature.

Page 15: Building Design Challenge

… loan repayment details of your building costs.

Your building budget is $2 400 000.

Each team member will look for a loan from either a bank, co-op or credit union.

How much will you have to pay back if you do it over 15, 20 or 50 years?

Use a Comparison Matrix to present your results.

Page 16: Building Design Challenge

Some questions to consider are …

… What is the building going to be used for ?

… What materials are to be used in it’s construction ?

… What special features will it include ?

Page 17: Building Design Challenge

• A plan is a view of a building from straight above.

• An elevation is a view of how the front, sides or back of a building will look.

• A section is like an elevation, only it’s a slice of the inside of a building - which you could never see in real life – lets you see what the structures inside the walls will look like.

• Architects use different scales to share different kinds of information: a close-up of an important design detail or a broad view of how a building fits into the landscapes around it.

Some terms to remember are …

What Architects do …

Like mathematicians they break down a complicated job and do it one step at a time.

What they design must both look good and work well, inside and outside, and it can’t cost more than the client can afford to pay.

A design isn’t only about looks it’s also about how it fits together.

For your project use the following Design Planner

Page 20: Building Design Challenge

Building Design Brief Planner Investigate and design • What information do you need to develop your design? • Make a list of questions you need to research.• Use simple mind maps, sketches and labelled diagrams to explore different design solutions.• Choose one design solution, draw a more detailed plan and make a list of materials required.

Record a list of design goals that’ll you use to evaluate your completed design.

Produce • Using your plan and list of materials construct your model.• Make ongoing modifications to your design and develop alternative solutionsto fix any problems in your design.

Analysis and Evaluate • Present your finished plan and model to the rest of the class.Explain its various features and why you have included them into your design.• Explain the difficulties or problems that you had andhow you worked to overcome them.

Evaluate your completed product using your list of design goals.
