Prefazioneing. Massimo Fioraso – Fischer Italia
Qualità riferita all’intera filiera
moderna e attuale nelle proprie caratteristiche tecniche e prestazionali e direttamente ricondotte a quanto

Two years after the previous publication Involucro e Costruzione, Tecnologie di rivestimento per le facciate
[Envelope and Construction. Cladding technologies for façades], fi scher is back on the scene with a new
publication. This one does not seek to copy or update the previous edition. Rather, almost as a complement to it
and to once again underscore the need for it, it seeks to present a full-spectrum view of the values underpinning
“building well” and the principles that connect architecture to people. In our times, for builders and end users,
these principles should rest on the cornerstones of design quality (the construction as a whole), safety (against
under-considered events such as earthquakes and fires), comfort (consideration for heat, moisture and insulation
conditions). It might seem that two years after the earlier publication would be too little to think that these “hot
topics” could have established themselves more and that these values could be perceived as absolutely essential,
even more forcefully than before. The state of affairs shows us loud and clear that everyone, architects and others,
is looking for a path that moves towards increasingly high quality in design performances. From a project’s start,
this level of quality of supported by clients who understand the value of restoring a relationship to the environment
and the close connection between aesthetics and quality. We could even say there is an aesthetics/ethics
relationship. At fischer, aesthetics and ethics have always gone hand in hand in defining our approach, which
can be summed up in one word: quality. This quality pertains to the entire world of constructions, from the client to
builder, the architect to the end user. In other words, it is human beings, in the most basic sense, that are central to
this basic relationship. Ethics and aesthetics are inherent to the term quality. This magnifying lens was used to try
to choose and present the published projects. We start, significantly, with Il Piol, a mountain home commissioned
by a man who was also the architect and final user. We chose it as an emblem, a manifesto of the philosophy and
principles that inform our products and services. It is traditional in the wisdom of its form and modern in its design
approach and the development of its building technology and the choice of insulation and fire and earthquake
protection standards. The cases that follow it were chosen for the specific capacity that each individual project
represents, for each project’s powerful ability to underscore very specific building themes. The technology
of building that is presented and summarized in each project is up-to-date in its technical and performance
characteristics and ties directly to what Fischer has to offer those active in the construction industry. These subjects
are as subtle as they are complex and current in the fullest sense of the word. They are addressed and presented
less with the objective of teaching and more with that of encouraging reflection on the role that, as professionals
and architects and as an industry, we would like to create for ourselves in coming years.

architettura, tecnica, filosofia, arte, fisica.
I rivestimenti devono
cm e 5 cm, peso superiore a 10 kg/mq e inferiore a 100 kg/mq.
sistema a montaggio meccanico.

There is no doubt that, nowadays, the term “cladding” has taken on a much more widespread meaning: no longer
simply the “skin” or covering of a building consisting of stone or another material, but part of the construction itself
with a separate identity in terms of architectural but, above all, technical performance. Precisely because of in-depth
technological innovation, ventilated façades have earned increasing recognition in the world of architecture. It is,
therefore, a question of involving each player in the sector and, ideally, concentrating their skills in the construction
of a “simple” cladding, an element consisting of multiple forms of architecture, technology, philosophy, art and
physics. The dry assembly technique of ventilated façades is currently very popular on account of requiring little
maintenance and being suitable for a wide variety of design projects. Thanks to this method, nowadays, each
manufacturer is capable of offering a mechanically valid, safe anchorage system, in line with market and design
requirements. The correct application and management of construction techniques from a legislative point of view
is regulated by the UNI 7959 standard entitled “Edilizia. Pareti perimetrali verticali. Analisi dei requisiti” (“Building-
Vertical external walls. Analysis of requisites”), which defines the characteristics that an outer wall should have and
deals with the cladding system as a whole. It is, still, today, a necessary reference for the drafting of specifications
related to performance as well as for special tender specifications and quality control certification. However, as
regards anchorage systems, it is still somewhat limited in that it only provides general indications regarding their
ability to support project loads. However, those active in the sector can now refer to UNI 11018, “Rivestimenti e
Rivestimenti lapidei e ceramici” (“Cladding and anchorage systems for mechanically assembled
ventilated façades. Instructions for design, construction and maintenance. Stone and ceramic cladding”). In short, the
regulation provides the necessary indications for a simple, logical use of ventilated façades using the dry assembly
method. The cladding must be designed using specific components for façades characterized by: a cladding
included between 0.5 cm and 5 cm, weighing more than 10 kg/sq.m and less than 100 kg/sq.m. The air gap for the
flow of air must have a thickness ranging from 2 to 20 cm. The insulating layer, in the various materials offered by the
market, a variable thickness that is applied like a “coating”. All the layers of facing are installed according to the dry,
mechanical assembly procedure. The regulations offers rigorous specifications regarding anchorage elements and
foresees: metal profiles with various sections, uprights and girders of the sub-structure; clamps and screw anchors
for anchorage of the profiles to the load-bearing structure and bolts and screws. A metal steel load-bearing structure
is anchored to the building wall with brackets and anchoring elements and enables the assembly of independent
layers and load distribution: both aluminium and steel substructures, compatible with various types of cladding, are
available. Only stainless steel must be used in accordance with the technical characteristics specified in the UNI EN
fischer Structure Easy.

i pannelli.

10088 regulations whilst the aluminium alloys used for structural purposes for the components of the anchorage
system must conform with the UNI 8634 regulation. The profiles have the function of uprights or girders and are
generally made from stainless, galvanized steel or extruded, drawn aluminium, of various thicknesses. In order to
guarantee anchorage of the panels to the steel load-bearing structure, a series of rod and plates should be used
whose function it is to ensure spacing, regulate planarity and support the panels. Depending on the system used,
screws, bolts and anchor screws have the dual function of fixing rods, uprights and girders to the wall support and
connecting the various components of the anchorage system. A suitable structural calculation should be performed
for each façade. The regulation also specifies maximum admissible deformations for uprights and girders which
must also be guaranteed in accordance with the length of the structural steel, the metallic material from which it
is made and by the operating conditions foreseen. This can be checked by the implementation of “fixed” clamps
and other free-standing ones to ensure the necessary sliding with the building support lying behind. The UNI
11018 regulation provides designers and installers with useful data for the design of the anchorage points of
panels such as tensile stress and anchorage points. A separate chapter is dedicated to the anchorage of panels.
The new generation of certifications related to anchorage performance is oriented towards the consideration
of characteristic properties in relation to materials. The new certification was issued at the beginning of 2003.
As regards certification of the anchorage for a fischer FZP undercut, the company recommended a new type of
certification subjecting it to DBIt , the German Institute for Construction Technology. The result was replacement of
traditional methods with a modern calculation procedure. This is a procedure that keeps account of the ultimate
tensile strength of various materials as well as of the actual loads present and of the dimensions of the façade slabs
and the lateral bearing slabs, based on the principal of exploiting the maximum loads of individual materials to
the full. This data is of fundamental importance for the accurate design of a ventilated façade, above all in terms
of identifying an appropriate structural design and the related calculation. A direct consequence is the use of
appropriate, certified materials in order to guarantee solidity and ensure project feasibility.

I “Piol” erano infatti
L’impostazione progettuale

For all those who have seen it, the Piol represent an icon of Good Building Practice, a manifesto of high
quality architecture that has become a concrete reality in a small building. Proof that its dimensions are
completely independent and that working well is without a doubt the result of the commitment of a team
which, from the customer to the project designer, from the planner to the producer, pursues a common
objective. Not a theoretical procedure, purely philosophical-ethical, but the result of a team that has shown
itself capable of following its own idea. Quality has proven to be the only alternative to price, the main axis
in an approach that everyone involved in the construction field, starting from the desires of the customer,
have rigorously respected. The result is a perfect building as far as durability, innovation and safety are
concerned. The Piol represents the evolution of the formal characters and typologies of historic local building:
the regularity and proportions of the plan, the sharp slope of the coverings, the absence of supports, the
roof and quarry-face masonry, the wooden parts of the terraces, the lofts and the roof, two floors above
ground, with a very high ceiling. The colour also contributes to integration into the environment – a natural
ochre shade, reminiscent of the various shades of the earth, was used for the coating. Even the name evokes
tradition. In fact, the “Piol” were the galleries onto which the main rooms in mountain constructions faced,
serving as a covered connection between the various floors and particularly useful for storing and drying
agricultural products. The design layout recalls to these characteristics: the regular floor plan, the wall
parameters and stone covering, the sharp slope of the roof pitch. The building is identifiable with a type of
central main pavilion body with covering in multi-coloured slate raised from the ground by a transparent
ribbon. The floor plan has been modified accordingly to historic typologies. The stairs and galleries connect

e tamponamenti in vetro e legno.

the various rooms to the various floors, as they did in the ancient Piol, and become the heart of the building:
hospitality areas, designed for gatherings, closed in by a precious cladding of wood and glass. So, just
as in ancient houses the openings are not always regular and of uniform size, here too, all spaces for
windows and doors are modular but not regular or rigid. The return to the ancient entrance doors in wood
and stone now consists of portals in burnished steel. On the South corner, on the first floor, a bow-window
(out of alignment in relation to the compact volume of the stone) in burnished steel and glass, looks out over
the main street, marking the corner in a very defined manner, emphasizing the view over the houses and
surrounding mountains. The library and a sitting-room are located here. Next to the North side, there is
another small body with a structure made entirely of wood, like an accessory of ancient houses, with a flat
covering and buffering in wood and glass. It houses some rooms with direct access onto the galleries. A
wooden bridge connects the Piol to the public road. The entire building, both inside and outside, recalls the
principles that have inspired this publication as well as the methodologies of modern-day construction. As
far as sustainability is concerned, its inclusion into the environment was studied in-depth, bearing in mind
the wellbeing of its inhabitants and its integration with and in the materials in its surroundings, such as, for
example, the slate as the local stone colour for outside facings and larch wood for the floors. In this particular
construction, the ties with local tradition, mountain architecture and natural materials have proven to be
more sought after than ever before, even more intimately experienced on account of being far removed from
any more or less rhetoric celebration. Almost as if striving for a “continuum” with the outside and a desire
to erect a construction that proves to be “organic” in the most “innovative” of terms. The other important
theme of Innovation is identifiable in the full compliance to the criteria of insulation, seismic adjustment, easy

maintenance, coherency and harmony with all of the players in the construction field in order to ensure
accurate, rapid execution. All of this was performed in full respect of local mountain architecture and
the natural materials that the mountain has to offer man. Most important of all is Safety. In an area that
is considered to be seismic, the structures have been erected in full respect of the safety and resistance
standards for seismic risk, both in terms of technical-construction details and the design layout. In fact, the
structural system with uprights and girders in fischer Structure Easy aluminium and FZP dowels was used
for the ventilated façade: the seismic proof, anchorage system for ventilated façades. Furthermore, the
ventilated façade was insulated using 6 cm polystyrene on the masonry, a system that permits a high-level
of insulation and guarantees wellbeing and energy saving in winter together with a considerable reduction
of air conditioning costs in summer. The roof was also insulated using wood fibre.

spazio creato dall’attuale sviluppo immobiliare dell’area.
in calcolata simmetria compositiva.

A new luxury hotel, the Concorde Hotel, was inaugurated in the centre of Berlino in November, 2005.
Located in a striking position, across from the famous Café Kranzler, it is a fi ve star hotel with 311 rooms,
a banquet hall, conference rooms, a restaurant, a health-spa area and bar. The Concorde belongs to the
French Concorde chain which also manages the Grand Hotel Esplanade. The building also houses offi ces,
apartments, the wax museum and an underground garage. When designing this 7 storey building, both the
client and the designer managed to refl ect the high standards of the chain by placing particular emphasis on
its architectural aspect and décor. In terms of town planning space, the volume of this new building completes
the area created by current property development in the area. The structure was conceived as the completion
of the traditional real-estate complex: its façade follows the alignment of the road and the structure descends
in a graduated manner to reach, at the extremity of the building, the same height as the other eaves in Berlin.
Delineated in volumetric contours, its façade epitomizes the building to a point where it actually embodies
the architecture. Even its windows seem to disappear in order to give better visibility to eaves and walls.
Similarly, its base colonnade is a simple ribbon with columns which, almost real pilaster strips, blend in
with the façade to become the façade itself. The stone-like facing material is used to perfection thanks to
working techniques in the horizontal lines of the moulding and in the attachment of vertically positioned
sheets. The latter is therefore interpreted in the totality of the architecture and volumetry, punctuated by
precise volumetric agreement, in perfect harmony and calculated compositional symmetry. Anchorage of
the slabs is totally invisible thanks to the use of a FZP fi scher dowel. The indented sections that delineate the
façade with a uniform outlet panel on the axes of the windows and parapets, defi nes the facing, consisting

of 9,200 metres of natural stone. A layer of 100 mm of heat insulation and a ventilation area measuring 60
mm containing the water pipes is hidden in the soffi t – something that the passer-by would never be aware
of given the width of the outlets which is just 4-6mm. The shape, the consistency, the dimensions and the
weight of the façade in Kirchheim. Limestone proved to be a challenge for the anchorage system which had
to satisfy not only aesthetic requisites but also the stringent conditions imposed by the regulations in force.
The result was a team work project in conjunction with the experts of the general contractor for construction
of the façade an engineering fi rm and company technicians. The anchorage loads for the undercut, much
larger than standard systems, allowed for a reduction in width of the larger slabs, measuring only 40 mm.
This lighter façade not only entails a reduction in the static load but also in construction costs. The fact that
a large percentage of components were pre-assembled, full respect of delivery time schedules and quick,
effi cient assembly and installation meant that from between 250 to 300 square metres of natural stone slabs
could be laid in a week despite the restricted operating areas of the building site. After testing resistance to
traction and bending, the load aspect and stability of the construction solution the IFBT institute of Leipzig
confi rmed conformity of the anchorage system. The shape and height of the building (over 60 metres) called
for a technical survey on the wind load, considering a wind depression of 2,400 N/m² and a wind pressure
of 1,300 N/m² in the structural design. The stone used for the façade proved to be as hard as it was porous
with clayey inclusions. In compliance with the safety levels stipulated, the 1,500 fi ller slabs (40 mm) and the
4,500 parapet slabs (75 mm) were anchored to the sub-structure. Each of the parapet slabs (1.50 x 0.42
metres – maximum dimension) was attached using four fi scher FZP 13 x 30 M8 W anchoring elements while
for each of the fi ller slabs (2.43 x 0.6 metri) six fi scher FZP 13 x 30 M8 W anchoring elements were applied.
To facilitate installation and to guarantee the safe insertion of each façade element (weighing 220 kg) a
hoisting kit was designed. Exposure to sunlight involves temperature fluctuations of up to 50°C on the façade
surface, generating compression loads in the extrados of the slabs. In this instance, the anchorages used
allow for tension deriving from heat deformation. The rounded design characteristic of the lower part of the
building proved to be an challenge for those constructing the façade meaning that each of the 300 elements
of the façade was individually designed and manufactured.

La sala del Parlamento della Baviera. L’involucro totaleIn collaborazione con ing. R. Unterweger – Gruppo Fischer
bassa riflessione e massima sicurezza.

The “Landtag”, the Bavarian Parliament building in Munich is a concrete example of fischer’s experience
in anchoring glazed surfaces to integrate them perfectly into the design. Nowadays, both architects and
principals prefer plain architectural styles, “natural” materials and volumes that are both clean-cut and creative
at the same time, but without forgetting to pay proper attention to aspects such as energy-saving, heat insulation
and soundproofing performance and safety. Glass has always been considered a “historical” material par
excellence, in view of the long tradition of its processing and applications. The building consists of a semi-
circular theatre-like hall with a resplendent false ceiling made of sheets of glass. The roof, partly supported by
walls also made of glass, giving an ethereal effect of weightlessness and light, combined with transparency,
colour-yield index, low light reflection and maximum safety. The false ceiling and part of the walls (a surface
area of 350 square metres for the former and of 170 for the latter) of the structure are made of sheets of glass
mounted using fischer FZP-G anchors. These are much used since they enable the sheets to be hooked in place
without making through holes in them. fischer’s long experience with mechanical anchors has found a new
application in anchors for glass, in which the supporting frame is a purely mechanical supporting element.
From the design point of view, the anchor system tends to disappear behind from the actual structure made up
of the sheets of glass, enabling the designer to exploit an innovative and unique solution. Designed to make
the lightness and simplicity of glass compositions stand out, literally “suspending them in the air” thanks to the
lack of visible anchors and therefore of visual impediments, the FZP-G anchor enables non-invasive securing
using only very light and plain metal supporting frames. In those cases in which the architecture is daring and
the structural specifications require the engineers and architects to combine aesthetics with safety and stability,
this solution is definitely the most suitable. The glass walls remain unchanged in their purity, to the benefit of
exceptional transparency. In such a delicate operation as assembling sheets of glass, the designer needs full
assistance starting right from the design stage. It is therefore necessary to analyse the project carefully and
investigate the most appropriate anchoring system, whether it consists of point-fixed or of the load-bearing
structure, in order to ensure that the work to be carried out at the site is safe and that all the guarantees
and certifications required are provided. The installation stage, above all, is important, in particular when
assembling large surface areas, as in the case of the Landtag.

The competition of ideas “Crossing the Highway” promoted by the Offi ce of the Secretary of State for
Territory, Environment, Agriculture and Relations with the State Production Agency of the Republic of San
Marino was won by a project for a slender-structured pedestrian overpass. Thirteen design groups took part
in the competition, undertaking to fi nd a solution for the sensitive crossing over the highway linking Rimini
to the city of San Marino. The project presents a lightweight structure with a span of 40 metres. The main
arch supports the overhanging walkway, offset on the other side by an arch built into the thickness of the
wall. Along the opposite edge runs the safety parapet consisting of slabs of glass 1.80 metres high, serving
both to prevent acts of vandalism and to protect pedestrians from gusts of wind. As far as concerns the loads
envisaged in the design, wind, snow, crowds, earthquakes and extreme temperature ranges were taken into
consideration, as the factors that generally subject works such as this to stresses during their lifetime. Over 28
loading combinations were analysed, and the results of this analysis were evaluated in order to guarantee
stability of the artefact in the worst operating conditions, always with explicit reference to the applicable
Italian standards. The structure of the overpass consists of a steel spatial grid fi xed by means of hinges to the
lateral reinforced-concrete piles. Specifi cally, it has an “L”-shaped cross-section: the lower horizontal part
is the actual walkway, while the tilted part is the resisting element of the bridge. With regard to the latter,
the structural combination between the main arch situated on a vertical plane, consisting of a tube with
a diameter of about 500 mm, and the tilted arch on top of it, with a diameter of about 250 mm, gives the

intero e posto sulle pile in cemento armato.

artefact suffi cient stability to withstand the stresses calculated in the design stage. The straight part of the
overpass consists of a sequence of vertical columns that support it, with relatively small distances between
centres. The stability of this second artefact is guaranteed by the simultaneous action of the horizontal
grid inside the deck of the overpass and by the vertical suspension provided by the columns. In particular,
the deck is built onto the reinforced-concrete pile at one end, while at the other it is fi xed to the reinforced
concrete slab. The vertical columns are driven on the ground, each on a suitably sized foundation pile laid
at a suffi cient depth. The action transmitted by the central walkway, above the highway, are captured by
the lateral piles consisting of reinforced-concrete diaphragms secured to the foundation piles on the ground
by means of a very large slab. The whole structure has been designed to be welded in a workshop and
transported to the site in sections. The various different structural components will then be assembled together
by welding. Launching is planned by means of cranes, with the whole artefact in one piece to be positioned
on the reinforced concrete piles. The structural elements used are normally available on the market. A special
note concerns the choice of the metal material (Fe510C), enabling sufficient and safe elastic performance
of the overpass even in adverse loading and temperature conditions. As far as concerns safety, both
safeguarding of the aesthetic structure and safety of pedestrians were considered: the sheets of glass will be
secured using fi scher FZP-G anchors. With this system, the sheets are mounted only from the inside, since the

All’applicazione in ambito esterno, quali pareti continue, vetrate,

bolt, supported by a load-bearing sub-structure available during the work at the site enables mechanical fi xing
with a blind hole that leaves the whole outer wall intact. Associated with the high-quality anchoring system that
contributes towards the highly innovative design is the important goal of keeping the sheet intact and of general
safety of the work. The need for solidity combined with the aim of transparency and lightness pursued by the
designers was correctly achieved in this application. The fact that the sheet was not holed immediately provides
increased structural resistance to stresses also in the assembly stage.
In addition to outdoor applications such as continuous façades, glazing, parapets and roofs, this fi xing
system can also be used for interiors, where interior decoration and design require very slender solutions
aimed at highlighting the purity of the materials. Hence the use of glass, the transparency of which remains
in all it clearness, marking only the shapes and the surfaces and guaranteeing, as the most extreme contrast,
very high and guaranteed structural safety. Technology, elegance and design can thus be achieved by the
designer, thanks also to the assistance provided, supplying highly technical solutions in line with the style of the
project and with any formal choices. From standard and recurrent solutions to unusual creations demanded

Facciata ventilata e isolamento dell’edificio.
legislativi e necessarie valutazioni economiche.
i 70 e i 100 kWh/mq/anno.
addirittura fra i 200 e i 300 kWh/mq/anno.

Use of energy, sustainable building, energy-saving and money-saving: these issues have lately become very
recurrent in technical terminology and not only, particularly when compliance with the law and necessary
fi nancial assessments are involved. The ever-increasing cost of energy and the will and need to optimise
quality and resources are leading institutions, citizens, companies and designers to design and to prefer
buildings in which all the construction and technological components are designed for excellence in energy
consumption and environment-friendliness. Each of them contributes in its own way towards informing and
towards producing directives, materials and components with standards that comply strictly with the energy
certifi cation of buildings called for in European Directive 2002/91/CE. This directive has defi ned the energy
performance of constructions both in terms of consumption by the building (heating, cooling, ventilation, hot
water, lighting) and in terms of the various different building typologies of performance certifi cation is required
(both for new buildings and for renovations). The directive stresses certifi cation as an extremely important
element of improvement that amplifi es the energy quality of a building. The direct consequence is that Member
States are under the obligation to incorporate the directive into compulsory national legislation. Italy has
drafted Act of Law n° 10/91, highlighting the profi les of the parties authorised to issue certifi cation and
stressing the role of local government bodies and therefore of building regulations. Application of Article 30
has started the process of delegation to Regional Councils, but the slowness of this process has induced the
Central Government to take responsibility also for the Regional Bodies in the form of legislative decree n° 192
of 19th August 2005. Action is now starting to be taken at regional level for regulating certifi cation and the fi rst
regional laws are starting to be issued. The Regional Councils issue regulations concerning a general
framework that comprises saving on resources, planning of consumption and incentives for producing energy
from renewable sources, while responsibility for specifi c regulations concerning buildings is delegated directly
to municipal councils. The most signifi cant Italian experience is perhaps that of Bolzano, with its “Casa Clima”
certifi cation, calling for indication of the level of consumption and raising of the limit values defi ned in Act of Law
10/91. Following the “launching” of Casa Clima, the municipal regulations have also been amended, in view

In particolare,
sull’edifi co durante i mesi estivi.

gaining a foothold, with the associated operation of insulation in order to lower heat dispersion to a
minimum. More and more buildings are being build with ventilated walls, sun shields and solar chimneys,
these being methods that it is possible to apply immediately in order to minimise energy consumption. Even
steps that are incomplete from the technical point of view, such as certifying the shell only, become
fundamental and decisive considering the strong cultural impact they are capable of generating in the end
users. Whether complete or partial, certifi cation must be seen as a possibility for differentiating the building
in the complexity of the market, as a parameter of communion between the customer, the designer and the
certifi er from the very beginning of the building process. This type of design must accompany the building up
to the certifi cation stage as an added value and as an incentive for total quality of the building, not only of its
energy quality. This concept leads to an added value that distinguishes one building from another and that
contributes towards optimising resources and increasing the general quality of architecture. It is significant
that 40 % of the total energy consumption originates from civilian and industrial buildings situated in Europe
and in North America, considered to be the leading source of carbon dioxide emissions through their
heating and air-conditioning systems. This legislation has been introduced at a time when the market is
particularly sensitive in this respect, due not so much to the obligation according to the law as to the
considerable incidence on energy savings, to which builders, purchasers and manufacturers of materials
pay noticeable attention. The current poor level of insulation of buildings is leading to a rapid concentration
of efforts to improve their efficiency, a goal that has led to the coining of the term of “sixth fuel” to indicate the
energy savings achieved by improving insulation. Efficiency and savings are also achieved by using
ventilated façades. The very name ventilated façade indicates the presence of ventilation inside the wall, in
the air gap between the masonrywork of the existing building and its outer cladding. Natural ventilation is
active inside these air spaces. Thanks to this construction system, considerable benefits are ensured in terms
of insulation and of energy efficiency, removing heat and moisture. These benefi ts are particularly obvious in
high buildings, that are particularly exposed. In summer, ventilated walls can reduce the heat load on the
building thanks to partial refl ection of the sunlight by the cladding, ventilation of the air gap and the
application of insulation, thus achieving a considerable reduction in air-conditioning costs. Vice versa, in the
winter season ventilated walls can retain heat, with signifi cant savings on heating costs. Not only, a
ventilated wall will also lead to refl ection of outside noise, with a consequent reduction of noise pollution,
thanks to their layered construction consisting of the cladding, the air space and the insulation material,
giving rise to considerable noise absorption. Specifi cally, if a wall has been carefully and correctly designed
in terms of its dimensions, air inlets and chimney outlets in relation to the thermodynamic variables, the
combined effect of ventilation inside the air gap and partial refl ection of sunlight by the cladding enable a

d’aria a tutto vantaggio dell’isolamento.

reduction of the thermal load on the building in the summer months. By increasing the thickness of the
insulation and therefore reducing the thickness of the air space, the high summer temperatures lead to an
increased fl ow of air, entirely to the benefi t of the insulation. Insulation can be achieved very easily, above all
because it is not exposed to weathering, nor does it act as a support for the cladding or for any other
components of the façade. It must be applied continuously and uniformly, also in order to avoid creating any
heat channels. What is more, its thickness can be increased without undue increases in costs and without
unexpected technical complications. Research and applications are aimed at living comfort, energy saving,
environment-friendliness, sustainability and innovation. Once again, experience in the fi eld of low-
consumption building is the optimum solution for Italian architectural tradition and the country’s climate. A
signifi cant aspect for fi scher is participation in specialised projects such as the “Casa3litriRoma” in Saline di
Ostia Antica near Rome. This is an example of a house designed to consume only 30 kWh/per square meter
per year, equivalent to about 3 cbm of gas or 3 litres of diesel oil per square meter per year for heating, that
is to say 80% less than the Italian average. Thanks to careful design and the use of innovative solutions for
heat control, starting out the materials supplied by BASF such as Neopor®, an innovative raw material for the
production of EPS insulating materials, and Styrodur®, extruded polystyrene foam sheets suitable as
insulation, no active cooling systems are required. In the “Casa3litriRoma” project, the fi scher nylon FIF-A
anchor was used. This product is part of a specific programme in the field of solutions for fixing the built-in
cladding of buildings, with fixing systems both for “overcoat” insulating systems and for insulating panels.
There are products for making outer layers of any type (stiff, soft, for rockwool ceiling panels, stiff panels on
supports of various kinds, and mechanical fixing systems for ventilated walls). These include Termoz and
Thermax. The latter stands out as the only thermally insulated fixing system for spaced loads, ideal for
applications on façades with outer thermal insulation and able to guarantee an effective heat barrier. The
galvanised steel DHM anchor, tested and certified for fire-resistance, should also be pointed out. The
ventilated wall is an important example of heat and sound insulation, as illustrated in the case histories
published, starting from the restyling of the Banca Popolare del Materano in Matera. The outermost layer,
made of stone slabs, has the aesthetic and architectural function of fitting the building into its urban and
environmental context, while the inner layer, consisting of a continuous air gap and a layer of heat-insulating
and soundproofing material takes care of these aspects. This layer adheres to the next, consisting of bricks,
which has the traditional insulating function and on which it was easy to apply the finishings and to carry out
the interior decoration of the rooms.

Facciata, fuoco e sicurezza in caso d’incendioIn collaborazione con ing. M. Antonelli – PROMAT Spa
combustibili è senz’altro abbondante (legno, plastica, tessuti, cavi elettrici, carta, ecc.
Rischio incendio: valutazione e conseguenze
Prevenire signifi ca intervenire affi nché l’incendio

Fire and the safety of people is an issue perceived in different ways even in the design community. In the case of modern
buildings, the response to safety issues in the field of ventilated façades are a particularly interesting example of
prevention, in which it is necessary to use a performance-oriented approach, in the absence of exhaustive regulations.
There is a fire risk for ventilated façades, too, and since they are a delicate part of the building, a correct and integrated
analytical and technical approach is required.
Fire
Fire is defined as a combustion reaction occurring in a violent and uncontrollable manner. More precisely, it is possible
to speak of fire in the event of combustion not wanted and not controlled by man, occurring in places not designed for
this purpose and involving fuels not originally intended for this use, caused by any occasional contribution of energy.
The presence of combustible materials (wood, plastic, fabrics, wiring, paper, etc.) is definitely abundant in modern and
industrialised societies, and the presence of triggers such as thermal, mechanical, electrical or even human causes,
is equally abundant, as well as so-called self-ignition. Self-ignition occurs when the temperature of self-combustion of
the material, which is considerably higher than that of combustion, is reached. Of course, a fire is fed only if there is
an adequate quantity of comburent, usually the oxygen contained in the air, provided its concentration does not drop
below the generic level of 14%, which can vary depending on the type of fuel. The most recent theories define a fire as
a sequence of four clearly identified stages in relation to the temperature in the area concerned and the passing of time.
More precisely, it is possible to consider an initial or triggering stage, a flash-over point, that is to say the simultaneous
combustion of a significant proportion of the compartment in question and a stage of genuine generalised fire followed
by natural or forced cooling, concluding the process.
Fire risk: assessment and consequences
Like other risks, modern science studies fire by analysing the data on hand and, above all, using the multi-disciplinary
approach, which suits this type of event very well. The risk of fire is defined, in a simple and accessible manner, as the
product of the probability of the event occurring and its consequence. The frequency of the event is calculated using
statistical methods that take the quantity and type of combustible material, the presence and the possible contribution
of comburent, all the possible causes of ignition (including the human factor and arson) and the historical frequency of
fires in the compartment under consideration - or in compartments having the same intended use and similar chemical
and physical characteristics and of the same size and shape - into account. The consequences are normally identified as
harm for health, safety and the environment, in addition to all the direct and indirect financial consequences. It is possible

apertura verso questi concetti.
35
to limit the frequency of fires by means of measures, technical rules, activities and choices that we can call prevention.
Preventing means taking steps so that the fire will in no way reach the flash-over stage, at which point, as explained above,
the fire would no longer be controllable. The consequences are limited by using protection systems chosen on the basis of
the type of consequences to be avoided (personal injury, structural and financial damage, etc..) Thus, fire-fighting, means
identifying the possible risks and lowering their impact on the system being analysed, with precise objectives in mind. It is
clear that, in order to limit the risk of fire, it is necessary to direct attention to the factors contributing towards the risk, that is
to say to frequency and to limiting the consequences. The strategies adopted in compulsory regulations, good practices
and design systems suitable for lowering the risk of the event generically are called fire-prevention.
Prescriptive and performance-related standards
The underlying concepts of fi re prevention have been ratifi ed in Directive 89/106/EEC of 21/12/88 concerning the
approximation of the laws, regulations and administrative provisions of Member States concerning “construction
products”. The directive radically innovates the manner of designing and erecting building and civil engineering works.
It defi nes the basic requisites to be met by works as a whole and by their parts. These include mechanical resistance,
stability and safety in case of fi re. As far as concerns the section on safety in case of fire, the directive explains a number
of fundamental points referred mainly to the fire-resistance of structures, the exits, the production of smoke and safety of
the rescue teams. Much attention is devoted to passive structural protection, where it is expressly stated that a structure
must be able to bear its own loads for the whole duration of the fire. The incorporation of Directive 89/106 into Italian
law also introduced a new approach to this subject, indicating a possible alternative to the systems used until then, and
still used to a very great extent today in almost all international standards. These systems consisted of a deterministic and
prescriptive approach, according to which the legislator indicated the minimum safety requisites in relation to the type
of building and its crowd density, that is to say by defining accident scenarios beforehand. The new approach, defined
as an engineering approach from the regulatory point of view, is of the performance-related and probabilistic type,
in which the designer conducts a risk analysis of the actual situation and must therefore choose the level of safety that
is needed to pursue the aims he has set himself. In Italy, the engineering approach to fire safety, better known as “Fire
Safety Engineering” (FSE), was introduced with the Consolidation Act on Constructions dated 14th September 2005,
although there were many earlier documents in which signs of recognition of these concepts could be seen. The Fire
Safety Engineering approach calls for the application of principles, rules and competent opinions based on scientific
assessments of combustion phenomena, on the effects of smoke and fire on people and structures and on the behaviour
of people in critical conditions. Based on the data obtained, strategies based on the quantification of the risks, on
the danger of fire and on its effects are worked out. Lastly, preventive and protective measures capable of limiting the
consequences of the fire are identified, with the aim of safeguarding human life, property and the environment.
In other words, the FSE approach complies with compulsory standards but it also allows greater design flexibility, to the

• defi nizione degli scenari incidentali, in accordo con gli organi di controllo, su cui sviluppare le successive valutazioni;
sicurezza presumibile;
37
benefit of safety, and a broader choice of options for architectural and construction solutions. This is because, thanks
to the analysis and modelling methodologies typical of this science, it is possible to provide broader and more flexible
answers to the difficult questions posed constantly by modern design. The FSE approach can therefore be defined as
an alternative or complementary system to prescriptive standards, and able to meet the same safety requisites with
alternative methods based on:
• definition, in agreement with the supervisory bodies, of accident scenarios from which to develop subsequent
assessments;
• objective assessment of the consequences of the fire in relation to the chosen scenario, and measurement of the
presumable safety level;
• choice of the protective and preventive actions able to reduce the risk to an acceptable level, in relation to the safety
objectives imposed by regulations or chosen by the designer.
Of course, in order to assess the effectiveness of the design choices, and to understand the performance
characteristics of the products that are chosen, it is necessary to resort to objective elements:
• calculations
• tests and application of the test results
• the designer’s opinion and assessment
In any case, in order to understand the actual behaviour of the chosen system or product it is necessary to carry
out actual tests and experiments that, in the case of structural protection and of compartmenting, are conducted
according to standard thermal programmes referred to in compulsory regulations or in international literature. In
the case of ventilated façades, there are very few reference regulations in Italy. Achieving the safety objectives is
therefore necessarily up to a correct engineering approach. There are, of course, a plurality of safety objectives,
although we have limited our considerations here to the following: slowing down propagation of fi re to the upper
storeys, prevention of the structural collapse of systems and components that might harm the rescue teams, and
limitation of the transition of cold and dense smoke from one compartment to another, so as not to prejudice rapid
evacuation of people. Let us assume simply a fi re scenario of cellulosic fi re, identifi able by a fi rst approximation with
the temperature/time curve indicated in the ISO 934 international standard and the mathematical expression of
which is defi ned below, or, better still, with a natural fi re curve calculated on the basis of the specifi c project fi re load
and of the ventilation factor. It is necessary to carry out the following preliminary steps:
• assessment of the actions referred to exposure of the components of the ventilated façade to heat and smoke
• assessment of the performance of construction products and of the systems used when exposed to fi re.
Lastly, it is essential to assess performance-related safety, on achieving the aims envisaged, in relation to the
situation that could plausibly be found in case of a fire. Of course, it is also necessary, for each specific case,
to identify the solutions that are most viable financially, as suggested in Directive 89/106, already mentioned

Tg = 345 . log10 (8 . t + 1) + 20
sostanze in esso contenute.

above. A simple analysis of the case proposed demonstrates the existence of many critical points that have
to be carefully considered and solved. In particular, it is possible to hypothesise a number of simple cause/
effect sequences that are useful for determining the different scenarios:
Entry of flames and hot gases into the air space between the floor slab and the
ventilated façade, with consequent triggering of fire on the story above the fire
The gap existing between the panel of the façade and the floor slab acts both as a preferential path for
flames and smoke and as a genuine chimney capable of conveying the hot gases towards the upper storey.
The curve of exposure of the façade/slab/joint system must therefore be of the natural type or, if this is not
possible, the nominal curve according to ISO 834 defined by the following equation may be used:
Tg = 345 . log10 (8 . t + 1) + 20
The performance-oriented approach suggests that the system for closing the gap must be sufficiently elastic
to cater for the necessary dilation. It must provide sufficient insulation to prevent the passage of hot gasses
and development of a temperature capable of igniting the combustible materials present on the upper storey
- generally about 150°C, reasoning on the side of safety. It must be sufficiently impermeable to cold smoke
to prevent propagation of a quantity sufficient to interfere with the time required for evacuating the persons
present or with the entry of the rescue teams. It will also be necessary to pay attention when evaluating
the impact of the combustibility, if any, of the insulating system used, as in the case of rockwool containing
organic binders or polyurethane-based foam, to its capacity to release fumes, toxic or irritating gasses
originating from the decomposition of the substances it contains.
Breakage of the glazing of the storey exposed to fire, with consequent release of hot
gases and flames that could affect the storey above
Breakage of the glass, caused by the high temperature, combined with the pressures generated at the time of
flash over, and which can easily exceed 150 - 200 Pa, is one of the decisive events in propagation from one
storey to another. To evaluate the failure time of the glass, it is possible to refer to experimental tests available
in international literature, taking care to use the thermal load called for in the natural fire curve, not in the
standard curve, which does not indicate an ignition time, often lasting 5 to 7 minutes. Breakage of the glass
will also have a cooling effect on the compartment affected by the fire, due to dispersion of the hot gases
towards the outside, but it will also lead to the addition of larger quantities of oxygen to the compartment
concerned, so that the fire will start to be governed by the fuel and no longer by the ventilation surface.

esterno, espresso dall’’equazione:
Tg = 660. (1 - 0,687. e -0,32t - 0,313. e -3,8t) + 20
dall’ambiente all’interno del pannello.
In
41
Breakage of the glazing of the story below the fire, caused by the outside temperature, with
consequent easier entry of hot gasses and smoke from the storeys below
In this case there are flames or heat coming from outside. The glazed surface of the storey above the fire will
be affected by a thermal load that, conventionally, can be defined by the outdoor fire curve, expressed by the
following equation:
Tg = 660. (1 - 0,687. e -0,32t - 0,313. e -3,8t) + 20
After a first stage of growth due to the flash-over, identical to that of the ISO 834 curve, this curve reaches a steady
temperature of about 660°C. This temperature can cause damage to the glazed surface and its breakage, with
the consequent entry of high-temperature gasses capable of creating favourable condition for sudden generalised
fire, again in this case governed by the fuel, since there is abundant oxygen coming from outside.
Heating of the façade panel of the storey above the fire, caused by hot gas outside, and
consequent possibility of ignition of the combustible materials adjacent to the panel in
question:
Similarly to the previous case, the panel/glazing system is exposed to a temperature of about 660 degrees,
although it should be considered that when the panel acts as a parapet, the thermal load could be more severe
due to the fact that it is closer to the source of the heat. In a fire, the panel could transmit a quantity of heat into the
building sufficient to cause ignition of the fuels or even, if the panel itself is a fuel, become a source and a cause of
a new fire. Also, the possible combustibility of the panel will have to be evaluated in order to determine whether
it will become detached from its supporting bracket due to its shrinkage in size caused by the combustion. One
example of this is wood-based panels on which screws and anchor bolts could lose their grip and where the metal
components would become a preferential route for transfer of heat from the environment into the panel.
Heating of the structural element supporting the façade panel (bracket), with consequent
structural deformation and loss of sealing of the system
It is a well-known fact that construction materials lose part of their weight-bearing capacity when heated.
Specifically, steel undergoes sudden drop in its ultimate strength, its yield strength and its modulus of elasticity
at a temperature of about 500-600°C. In the event of a fire, the flow of heat transmitted by the hot gasses to the
steel components means that a critical temperature is reached within a fairly short time, above all on the massive
structures used nowadays (100-200 m-1). The deformations induced by the lower capacity to withstand loads
can lead to a significant change in the shape of a ventilated façade system, with a consequent loss of grip or, in
some cases, loss of the elements sealing the gap between the floor slabs and the façade itself, if these are kept in

(UK, 197), First Interstate Bank Fire, Los Angeles (USA, 1988), One Meridian Plaza Business (USA, 1991), Torre Winsor
Madrid (Spagna, 2005).
adeguatamente provata.
43
place simply by means of a mechanical support or by pressure or contrast. The above is even more significant
and critical if the structures are made of aluminium which, in case of fire can become badly buckled even at
relatively low temperatures.
Collapse of the structural element supporting the façade panel (bracket), with consequent
falling of the façade panel
If the supporting structural element is heated so much that it actually collapses, the consequence will be not
only a loss of grip of the system but also that the façade panel will fall, with foreseeable consequences for the
rescue teams and immediate entry of flames and hot gasses both from the storey below and from outside. The
size of the bracket and that of the elements securing it to the panel and/or to the floor slab, must therefore be
calculated not only with reference to mechanical stresses in a cold state but also in a hot state, using numerical
analysis and by means of both computing programmes and experimental data. The use of adequate protections
and suitable oversizing can be calculated on the basis of the standard thermal load – equal in this case to that
of the ISO 834 curve – and to a natural fire curve. Of course, the patterns used must benefit safety and take all
the real phenomena - failure, cracking, relaxation, etc. - that can alter the theories foreseen at the time of the
calculations into account. To conclude, since there are no compulsory standards or precise regulations, the
fire risk of a building with a ventilated façade must be assessed by means of an engineering approach. The
various scenarios to be considered must be calculated, if possible, in relation to the natural fire curves or, as an
alternative, using parametric or conventional curves such as the outdoor curves or the curve according to ISO
834.Propagation of a fire can be prevented, or slowed down by using suitable safety criteria when building
and calculating the elements of the façade. In particular, the utmost attention should be paid to choosing and
calculating the supporting and anchoring components, to the insulating capacity of the panels and to the time
to breakage or cracking of glazed components.Standards prEN 1364-3 and ASTM E2307 can be very helpful
for the designer. They indicate the testing systems and the relevant configurations for the continuous claddings
of façades, and investigate in depth several case histories, among which the following should be remembered:
Summerland Blaze (UK), First Interstate Bank Fire, Los Angeles (USA, 1988), One Meridian Plaza Businesses
(USA, 1991), Torre Winsor Madrid (Spain, 2005). The use of ventilated façades, therefore, does not prejudice
or limit in any way the safety of buildings or of rescue teams if the project is drafted and implemented correctly,
that is to say in line with the performance concepts described above and using materials the effectiveness of
which has been adequately tested.

Neuer Wall 52.

The Neuer Wall is the street with the most exclusive and fashionable shops in Hamburg, where classy
boutiques stand side by side with shops boasting a long history and tradition. The project for organising
the surrounding urban space was planned to make this area even more attractive. One of the reference
points of the project is the building known as “Neuer Wall 52”, with its extraordinary cladding consisting
of glass panels held in place by means of invisible anchors. Its architecture has an extraordinary lighting
effect. While the row of shops in the corner building, which is 40 metres high and 13 metres wide, is clad
with natural black stone, the six fl oors of offi ce space that overlook the street are wrapped in a delicate
covering made of panels. One hundred and thirty-six windows give the surface of this singular façade
an extraordinary structure that could hardly go unnoticed. At night the lighting technology, LEDs built into
the openings of the windows, immerse the façade in a sober and refi ned light. The building stands out for
its precise volume and due to the rigid defi nition of the geometrical forms of which it is made, divided up
according to the materials used so as to characterise both this building and those surrounding it. The idea of
making the cladding with rectangular glass panels, giving the whole volume of the building weightlessness
and light was unique and original. The size, too, not excessive, contributed towards giving the whole
composition a sense of refi nement and of “craftedness” that makes this creation so special. The precision
technique and the anchoring system that “disappears” in relation to the overall architecture has made it

carichi a taglio.

possible to create a façade in which the material and the luminous effect. The experts in claddings for façades were
involved from the very beginning in the design of the façade, and were able to say that “The use of standardised
components and the high level of pre-assembly of the substructure made it possible to limit the costs, both during
design and during installation”. The fi scher FZP-G anchoring system for glass, rather than the more common fi xing
points that pierce the glazing, was chosen for both design and fi nancial reasons. Positioned between the openings
for the windows, the glass panels, which measure 1.20 by 0.33 m, cover a total surface area of 675 sq.m. The
sheets of VSG glass, measuring 8+10 mm, are secured to the substructures thanks to 10,000 anchors for each
FZP-G sub-frame. The innovative anchoring concept was certifi ed and approved for this specifi c application. The
outer 8 mm ESG glass sheet is connected to the 10 mm ESG sheet by means of white stove enamel. For the upper
fi xing points, the FZP 13 x 16.5 M6/9 G was inserted into the 8 mm outer panel to a depth of 5 mm. This anchoring
principle guarantees the utmost safety for the wind loads and loadability of the outer panel if the coating is
damaged. The circular cleft around the cylindrical hole in the inner glass was fi lled with the chemical mortar fi scher
FIS V after inserting the anchor so as to absorb shear loads. For the bottom fi xing points, the FZP 15 x 6 M8/9 G
anchor for sub-frames was inserted into the internal 10 mm panel, to a depth of 6 mm. The glass panels overlap, so
that anchoring points are invisible and the white coating between the panel also conceals those at the bottom. The
substructure was designed to as to enable the glass panels to be mounted at an angle of 6.5°. It was pre-assembled
and delivered in modules measuring 2.50 x 1.20 m and connected to the pre-assembled brackets. The brackets
are fi xed in place by means of 6,000 stainless steel anchor bolts extended with SXS 10- the only nylon anchors that

Facciata e sicurezza in caso di sismaing. M. Fioraso – Fischer Italia
sismico.

Designing ventilated façades is particularly critical when they are located in earthquake-prone areas. The
discussions that arose in the wake of Ordinance no. 3274 on 20 March on building in earthquake-prone
areas resulted in an expansion of the basis of discussion, involving all players active in th e construction
industry. The Ordinance brought with it a need for new design methods determined by an altered
earthquake classifi cation of the map of Italy. In light of the modifications to earthquake requirements, the
type of fixing systems are not comprehensively covered in the earthquak e standards, there are neither
design criteria nor tests indicated for areas designated as at highest risk. Compared to the rest of Europe,
the subject of fixing systems in earthquake zones is relatively new for the Italian market. In this area,
efforts are directed to ensuring the optimal bearing capacity of decisive structural parts, which includes
anchoring systems. For decades, in-depth research has been underway on materials and technologies.
This research is meticulously controlled to give users a needed effective tool for building. Generally,
investments have been considerable and highly focused as research goes beyond the level of product
to include application and procedural research that pertains to such areas as unclear passages of the
regulations that are further developed and tested in order to explain them and teach them to installers
and architects. Based on these important procedural points and critical issues from a static perspective
in relationship to the structures, a technical and design reference is offered by the new manual “Sistemi
e soluzioni per costruire in zona sismica” [Systems and solutions for building in earthquake zones]. The
only such manual in Italy, it gathers a wide range of case studies proving the strength of mechanical
anchors with fischer FZP substructures, developed starting in 1998 in China, as an acceptance test
for products for use in large projects. The manual provides a summary of the expertise developed by
working with major research centres, now finally available to architectural professionals. By their nature,
ventilated façades are critical components of the whole building that need to be correctly calculated
and fixed to ensure hold in the event of an earthquake. Indeed, the fixing system’s bearing structure has
the essential function of making it possible to anchor the slabs to the wall, serving the whole of the static
function. Its resistance to earthquake risk must be absolutely guaranteed, which can only be done if the
different components of the façade can reciprocally move so as to avoid breaks. The fixing systems can
connect structural parts to each other, such as a metal framework to a reinforced concrete structure; or
it can anchor non-structural elements whose attachment is decisive for protecting the activities that take
place within the building. These kinds of systems are best represented by hospitals where, in the case of

In ogni caso
In sede
deformazioni.

an earthquake, the structures must not only mechanically withstand even partial collapse, they must
also avoid compromising the activities taking place in the buildings. We are currently seeing strong
commitment in this sector, with special attention to new earthquake protection technologies for the
structural parts, without neglecting the protection of system components and non-structural systems.
In all cases, the prime objective is to successfully ensure that, if there is an earthquake, these systems
are not damaged. This means ensuring the functionality of its connections, exploring the relationship
between the effect of cement cracking and the fixing system’s lost resistance capacity. This situation
is addressed by ETAG, the most advanced regulation for the sizing of anchors to concrete, which
requires specific anchors for cracked and non-cracked concrete. Studies showed that the 0.5 mm
width of the crack of the test support object and the application of almost static loads did not allow
for an extension of the results to situations in which resistance to seismic activity is required. In order
to check the functionality of fixing systems in the case of earthquakes, a comparative analysis was
performed on how the progressive cracking of support material can compromise the holding capacity
of anchors classified according to their functional mechanism. A series of tests on a vibration table on
a damaged support with a crack 1.5 mm wide confirmed that, regardless of the functional mechanism,
the resistance level of the fixing system is very high. Collapse could only be reached by augmenting
the test’s acceleration many times and the break was always preceded by major deformations. The
application of cladding slabs through mechanical anchoring, was facilitated by fischer FZP fixings
and the Structure Easy substructure, a system that provides high performance in terms of safety,
with breakage values two times higher than traditional fixing elements. This system was specifically
designed for the cladding panel’s structural optimization, with low bending forces in the slab and
no exposed elements in the open joints, which means very easy application. To ensure its hold,
especially in the case of earthquakes, the system was subjected to many tests on a vibration table at
the Eucentre in Pavia, to check its resistance in high-risk situations as well. The tests simulated the same
ground accelerations, intensity and spectrum as those recorded in earthquakes in Nocera, Tolmezzo,
Colfiorito, Sturno, Mammoth Lake and Coalinga. No collapse or deformation was recorded at 100%
of the actual ground accelerations of the different earthquakes, nor when they were augmented up to
150% and then up to 200%.

R. Lamacchia – Lamacchia Associati; ing. A. Di Giulio – Cogem SpA; dott.

Matera’s historic centre, in Piazza San Francesco d’Assisi, is the site of the central building of the Banca
Popolare del Materano. The property falls under Law 1493/39 and was object of an interesting renovation
project. The building is set as a “backdrop” of the main road, following a perspective architectural layout that
fi ts in well with the 18th-19th century general structure of Matera’s historic centre. All projects should avoid
being invasive or highly defi ned, including in terms of their volumes. They should not go beyond redesigning
the outside “skin “ of the building, redefi ning the architecture of the façade’s material, “contextualized” and
made homogenous in terms of texture, luminosity and colour, tied to the context of the surrounding buildings.
The building was completed in the early 1960s on the design of architect Emanuele Plasmati and adopted a
defi nition of its construction system and material which was highly modern at the time in the Matera context.
This included, specifi cally, anodized aluminium and glass curtain wall façades, on the steel bearing structure,
consisting of aluminium, up-and-down sashes with thin panes and a sandwich panel windowsill made of two
bakelite elements with an expanded polyurethane panel between them. The construction design, dated in
terms of the technologies and materials used, has become today non-compliant in many aspects due to the
implementation of safety and workplace comfort standards. It was clear that the bank’s structure clashed
with the urban space primarily because of its “skin”. Today’s project is based precisely on that skin, choosing
a local stone material, “Marzaro”, and a solid/void relationship of the windows, through a ventilated
façade and a technology that gives a modern quality to the fi nal work. In addition to the contextualizing of
the façade, the Marzaro stone also creates the “inertial mass” needed to naturally enhance the façade’s
thermal and acoustic inertial characteristics. The project focuses on technically and architecturally updating
the existing building while fi tting it with the traditional architecture of the historic centre. This need is being
addressed by the manufacturing industry’s range of products that perfectly meets what the architect needs
both during the design and construction supervision phases. The conditions of the current works were
already set by procedural and design directives. This started from the size module employed for the glass
and steel curtain wall, which led to large vertical, up-and-down sashes, which are diffi cult to manoeuvre
and, more importantly, diffi cult to maintain. The façade’s sandwich structure, both in terms of the glass panes
(which are not thick enough, not laminated and lack an air gap), and of the sandwich panel (falling short
of necessary thermal and acoustic insulation standards) led to a number of problems in keeping the indoor
microclimate up to prescribed comfort levels. The face-lift involved the entire insulation system to try to bolster

In

the low existing insulation level. A great deal of attention was given to safety and the glazed sashes, one of
the more vulnerable construction components. These had been completely inadequate in terms of safety, as
they lacked burst-resistant, explosion-resistant laminated panes to the point that accidental breakage could
cause considerable damage to individuals. All of these construction shortcomings and non-compliance with
regulations combined to create the need to adapt the building’s external façades to make them compliant with
current construction, technical and security requirements. The overall redesign replaced the existing outside
wall with a ventilated buffer composition, in which the different layers were designed to each serve specifi c
functions. The outermost layer was given the aesthetic and architectural function of fi tting into the urban and
environmental context. The inner layer consists of a continuous air gap and a layer of thermal and acoustic
insulation to serve an insulating role. This layer adheres to the next one, consisting of brick which serves the
traditional task of buffering and on which the décor details and furnishing of the indoor spaces can be easily
created. The construction/technical method and architectural/aesthetic method applied to the façades are
based on a fundamental assessment that is both architectural and aesthetic/fi nancial. The process is not
very complex, which means it is not a great burden in terms of time or costs. It involves replacing the existing
curtain-wall panels with other panels that have the characteristics described, while maintaining the building’s
architectural bearing structure. The system used replaces the existing glass/steel panel with panels in stone
and non-thermal safety glass. In addition to thermal and acoustic insulation, these panels, which have air
gaps and refl ective treatment, also provide for a sharp reduction of solar irradiation, and safety in terms of the
glass bursting or exploding in case of breakage. The façade structure is among the type with an aluminium
substructure. In addition to supporting the cladding materials, it provides the depths needed for the ventilation
gaps. Specifi cally, the system is interfaced with the façade’s outside stone screen, which holds the housings
for the FZP inserts for anchoring to the aluminium structure. Internally, the aluminium structure is arranged on
a traditional buffering cladding, improved by the inclusion of rectifi ed brick blocks, which means they can be
assembled with ultra thin adhesives for an improved thermal and mechanical hold for the joints, reducing the
overall weight and load movement. The ventilated façade was designed so that that air in it can fl ow naturally
by chimney effect to improve the thermal and hygrometric characteristics of the wall for enhanced indoor
comfort and energy savings. In this case, the decision was made to build an external cladding of slabs laid with
open joints, in addition to the air gap. This arrangement avoids relying solely on surrounding conditions (values
of the physical/environmental parameters at the base and top of the wall), as it also relies on each slab, where
the same mechanisms can implement micro-chimney effects that make the air fl ow locally, thereby producing
a domino effect that inevitably affects the entire wall. As a whole, these devices ensure compliance with safety
and workplace comfort standards, as well as providing considerable energy savings in operating the building.

The Botanical Garden of the University of Padua is located in Tre Pini and is one of the oldest in existence. Its
restoration and expansion affects its architectural, functional and construction aspects and was the object of
an international design competition, “Hortus Botanicus Patavinus”. It is an important example of
sustainability as a philosophy and construction practice, because of the fundamental concept behind it:
biodiversity. Focus on sustainability prompted design choices and the addition of new elements to the
existing historic context of which the Botanical Garden is part. The design choices were founded on a few
basic considerations, including the importance of the architectural context surrounding the Botanical
Garden, which includes the Basilica di Santa Giustina and the Basilica del Santo, historically signifi cant
religious centres for the area and the entire city. On the western border, the minor, abandoned character of
the properties bordering the Tre Pini area, defi ned by a high degree of changeability. The historic
succession of uses for the site were all defi ned by the presence of water, such as farming irrigation canals
and fi shing in the lake of the nearby Cecchini-Pacchierotti park. Coming from the historic Botanical Garden,
the entrance to the Tre Pini area is marked by two highly significant elements: there is the hillock of the 19th-
century park with majestic trees growing around it and a unique view, right past the hillock, that suddenly
and dramatically opens on the northern side of the Basilica di Santa Giustina. The first objective was to use
these strong elements to make them focal points of the design plan. It was felt that the unique quality and
architectural value of the context made it essential to subordinate the new structures to the existing historic
elements. From this perspective, the entrance to the new area entailed removing an existing area used for a
house for scouts and a building “cut” in the hillock at the level of the house’s base. This entrance preserves
the remains of the romantic park while accentuating the element of surprise of the Santa Giustina view,
creating a “perspective eyeglass” directed at the church’s domes. The western border which crosses
halfway through an athletic field, appears as a completely artificial mark in the urban fabric, not relating to
any natural or built element. While having kept the design plan within the given borders, it was important to
keep open the possibility of a future expansion of the Botanical Garden beyond its current western border
within the athletic field. The areas that compose the Garden’s greenhouse are separated from each other by
water, as the Benedictines’ fields were furrowed by irrigation canals. The canals’ memory is recreated by a
system of water pools arranged in a cascade formation on different levels, that collect rainwater intercepted
by the large roof surfaces of the greenhouses and used for irrigation. The project came out of a question the

A piccola scala,
maggior dimensione. Tale relazione continua attraverso i vari climi, fino a giungere alla piccola superficie della

designers asked themselves: what should the fundamental idea of a 21st-century botanical garden be? The
answer arose that it is essential to represent the plant biodiversity of our planet and examine the phenomena
that determine it. The starting point from which the general plan was drafted. Its biological character had to
be explored to understand its salient features and the planning directives that required protecting plant life. It
is known that plants grow even in the most extreme environments; yet, they are not randomly distributed on the
planet’s surface, but rather based on each species’ different ecological needs. Our planet also features a
multiplicity of environmental conditions determined by different factor groups (such as climatic, edaphic and
biotic). Plant species with similar ecological needs in terms of environmental factors tend to group together,
creating unique formations that can be recognized for their defining floral and structural characteristics. On
the small scale, these plant formations are identifi ed with major land biomes, whose extension and distribution
is determined by the planet’s diverse climatic conditions (such as temperature and precipitation). The biomes
can serve as an effective frame of reference for a primary description of the diversity of the earth’s plant cover.
Just as the earth is divided into climatic regions, oriented in general like the earth’s latitudes, the project’s area
was also divided into parallel areas, arranged in the east-west direction, evoking the arrangement of the
biomes. Visitors come in and move through the earth, touching its tangible reality with their hands at a point
from which they can immediately see the different biomes that the fi ve greenhouses present with their
declining sizes, representing plant biodiversity and its ability to adapt to different environments. One of the
most important aspects of a modern botanical garden is felt to be its ability to convey, with strong visual
power, the increasingly urgent need to keep the planet’s biodiversity alive, at this moment in history when a
unsustainable development model is endangering a great many animal and plant species and their habitats.
Entering the expansion of the Botanical Garden will be like entering a sectioned view of one of the earth’s
hemispheres, where the areas symbolize the planet’s climatic zones. It starts with a large area of tropical
greenhouses to the north of the new section, in which refl ective water pools inside and outside the
greenhouses represent the high levels of relative humidity, light and temperature characteristic of this climate.
Following this conceptual north-south line along the earth’s meridian, to the southern area of Tre Pini, visitors
cross tropical, arid, and temperate climate areas and end up in a sub-artic climate. Each area has a
greenhouse whose flora corresponds to the represented biome, supported by exhibit areas in which an
accompanying educational display is set up. The outdoor landscaping continues to illustrate, sometimes
symbolically and sometimes literally, the flora that belongs to the represented biome. Variation of
temperature, light and water levels available along this path through the bioclimatic areas are represented by
the declining size of each area and its corresponding greenhouse. The largest area and the biggest
greenhouse correspond to the greatest degree of biodiversity, found in tropical climates. This relationship

varie piante in determinati periodi storici.
ancora in Africa.
conosciute.

continues through the different climates, down to the small space given to the sub-artic climatic area, whose
biodiversity is at low levels because of plant life’s difficulty in adapting to these climatic conditions. The end of
this visual display route is the entrance to the area where plants are represented in space, the final step in
extreme adaptation to climatic conditions that are impossible in the natural world, rendered possible by
technology and the human will to go beyond known physical and natural limits, in the attempt to “export” life
beyond the earth’s surface. In figurative terms, the project’s layout could be compared to a local unfurling of
the plant carpet that covers the planet earth. The metaphor of the carpet seems particularly apt if we consider
the similarity between the geometric patterns within the circular walls of the historic Botanical Garden and the
patterns used in the weave of carpets. The educational displays ordered by the clients and specified in the call
for bids were developed in the project proposal giving priority to the relationship between plants and the
environment. Within this primary conceptual scheme, the theme of the plant and human beings is developed
in the context of each climatic zone, illustrating the use of different plants in specific historic periods. The
greenhouses feature a metal structure that exposes and negates their material quality to highlight the visitors’
educational installation. Their unintentional grandness was made possible by applying glass panes with
2500 x 1200 cm modularity, hooking the panes to the main structure with fischer FZP-G that can absorb the
expansions and contractions that the structure causes in the glass panes. The museum areas’ closeness to the
greenhouses allows for a direct and immediate correlation between the natural environment and its use in
history, between the “naturalness” of the spontaneous growth of plants on earth and the “artificiality” of uses
and modifications that the human factor has brought throughout history. Understanding plants in relationship
to climate with the living examples in the greenhouses is paired with understanding the usefulness of plants for
developing civilization in specific historic periods. The display seeks to emphasize the close relationship
between the history of plants and the environment and plants and humans. Accentuating the climatic
interpretive key manages to remove the educational displays from a Eurocentric perspective to foster
understanding of the concept of biodiversity. For example, in the different eras of history, the cultivation of
grains has played a key role in human history. However, the staple grains always differed: wheat in the
Middle East and Europe, corn in the Americas, rice in Eastern Asia and other grains in Africa. From this
perspective, the third educational display about plants in space becomes another variation on the theme of
plant life based on environmental conditions. In a context completely lacking the natural conditions
favourable to plant life, such as inside a space ship or a colony on another planet, plants must be recreated in
an artificial system in order to prompt photosynthesis, an essential process for making life possible in plant
forms not yet known to us.

Oltre a
messa in sicurezza sismica.
standard e normative diventate poi cogenti a livello internazionale.

In addition to the intrinsic quality of a product, a fundamental aspect in terms of safe, accurate design is attention to
service in order to offer concrete solutions, clear answers and constant updating. Together with highly tested, certified
products, it is also necessary to find solutions to design expectations, technical-construction problems and those
related to building sites which help the professional source top-level skills and to match himself against international
experience. Among the range of services offered by fi scher, design consultancy is of fundamental importance in that
it helps gives the designer the necessary assistance both by providing technical specifi cations during the planning
stage and orienting the choice and sizing of anchoring systems. It is important that the designer is supported by a staff
of highly qualifi ed, expert engineers right from the onset, i.e. from initial planning right up to the building site, studying
and evaluating the most technically suitable solution based on specifi cations and targeted requirements. In addition
to having to guarantee maximum quality and safety in conformity with international certifi cates and certifi cations, the
solutions adopted must be guaranteed by laboratory tests performed by qualifi ed technicians. This aspect is essential,
especially when it is a question of particularly complex, specialist spheres of application such as large buildings,
applications in areas at risk of seismic events. This should be integrated with training and refresher courses in that
nowadays, more than ever before, a professional has to adapt to the continuous evolutions in the building sector and
to participate, actively in the relationships that distinguish the modern construction market. Fischer has implemented a
dedicated training area, i.e. fi schertraining, in order to provide information and encourage training. A comprehensive
programme of courses deals with all subjects related to anchorage from a point of view of regulations, theory and
application, with particular emphasis on the specifi c needs of professionals. Skills, experience, questions and answers
gathered during years of work and application have been condensed into application tools, technical manuals and
dedicated software which are now available to the designer with particular emphasis on aspects related to ease-of-
access and user-friendliness. Texts that, at times, have anticipated standards and regulations, subsequently becoming
mandatory on an international level. Among these, worth particular note are the manual “L’ancoraggio strutturale
nelle costruzioni” (“Structural anchorage in constructions”), now in its third edition, the book “Involucro e costruzione
– tecnologie di rivestimento per le facciate” (“Cladding and construction – facing technologies for façades”) and the
brand new publication Sistemi e soluzioni per costruire in zona sismica (“Systems and solutions for construction in
seismic areas”) which, among others, deals with the problem of seismic activity in fi elds involving the application of
ventilated façades, plant engineering and structural consolidation. In the software sector, the following programs are
available in a periodically, updated version: Compufi x software, for the sizing of anchorage systems and “Sistemi
e soluzioni di fi ssaggio per rivestimenti” (“Anchorage systems and solutions for claddings”), programmed for
comprehensive, easy consultation, complete with technical data, product tables and design suggestions.
