Building Plans for an 8 x 12 Value Shed – If you have the time and skills to build your own

shed, use these plans for your project. They detail the construction for an 8x12 shed and can

be easily scaled up for a larger shed.

1. Build Shed Floor

a. Cut the Seven 2x6x8 Treated to 7’9”, these are your floor joists.

b. Cut the Two 2x6x12 Treated to 12’, these are the rim joists.

c. Fasten the joists to the Two 2x6x12 Rim Joists @ 24” OC, with 16# Galvanized nails as shown

d. Next, fasten the three sheet of ¾” subfloor down with 8# common nails, fasten every 6” on the edge

and every 12” thru the center. One Sheet needs cut in half (4’x4’). Sheet should be perpendicular to the

joist as shown.

2. Build 12’ Shed Walls

a. Cut Twenty 69” Wall Studs from the 2x4x12’s.

b. Cut four 12’ top/bottom plates from four 2x4x12’s

c. Cut two 137” top plates from two 2x4x12’s

d. Assemble the two 12’ walls with the 69” Studs 16” OC as shown. There are two top plates and one

bottom plate, note that the upper top plate is 7” short.

e. Cut 6 of the 10 sheets of T-111 siding to 74.5”, so sheets are 74.5”x48”. Then fasten siding to the two

12’ walls, so that there is 1” overhanging the bottom edge. The siding should be 1” longer than the

walls. Fasten with galvanized siding nails per manufacturer’s specs.

3. Build Roof Rafters

a. Rafters are 5/12 pitch which corresponds to 22.5 degrees. Set miter saw for 22.5 degrees and cut the 9

2x4x10’s in half, then cut the pieces to 55 ½”, as shown. Should have 18 pieces like shown below.

b. Set 4 of the rafters aside, they are the fascia trim. Cut a 4 ¾” bird mouths on one end of the other 14

pieces as shown below.

c. Assemble the rafter pieces into trusses as shown below. Use some osb or plywood for a gusset plate.

Fasten with nails and construction adhesive. 5 of the 7 trusses need a gusset on each side. 2 trusses

have a gusset on only one side, for the end walls.

4. Build the 8’Walls

a. Cut Nine 70.5” Wall Studs from the 2x4x12’s.

b. Cut two 89” bottom plates from two 2x4x8’s

c. Cut two 96” top plates from two 2x4x8’s

d. Assemble the two 8’ walls with the 70.5” Studs 16” OC as shown. The bottom plate is 7” shorter than

the top plate.

e. Back 8’ Wall - Fasten 2 sheets of 4x8 siding to the wall, so that there is 1” overhanging the bottom

edge. Fasten with galvanized siding nails per manufacturer’s specs. Don’t worry if the siding is a few

inches short on top, the fascia boards cover it. Use a router or a saber saw to cut the siding along the

truss.

f. Assemble Front 8’ Wall with Door Opening- Fasten 2 sheets of 4x8 siding to the wall, so that there is 1”

overhanging the bottom edge. Fasten with galvanized siding nails per manufacturer’s specs. Don’t

worry if the siding is a few inches short on top, the fascia boards cover it. Use a router or a saber saw to

cut the siding along the truss and cut the door area out. Retain the Door Cutouts to build the doors.

g. Add Fascia Boards to the 8’ Walls, These were the 4 Rafter without the Bird Mouth Cut.

5. Assemble Walls

a. Stand up and fasten the four walls, the following image shows how the corners interlock. Fasten the

bottom plates to the floor and the corner of the siding on the 8’ walls. Nail the top plate where the 8’

wall overlaps the 12’ wall.

6. Install Trusses, Eave Side Fascia and Roof Sheathing

a. Toe nail the 5 trusses to the top plate (24”O.C.), the trusses should overhang the walls 3.25” on each

side. Depending on the Siding thickness, you can rip the scrap siding pieces for the eave side soffit. The

Soffit will be 3.25” minus the siding thickness.

b. Cut the 1x4x14 to the building length (depends on siding thickness). The diagram shows 12’4”.

c. Cut one sheet of 7/16 OSB in half (4x4), then install the 2 full sheets and 2 halves. Fasten every 6” on

the edges and every 12” thru the center.

d. Install the roof sheathing. Rip 8” pieces for the ridge and 2” pieces for the rake side fascia boards.

7. Install Drip Edge, and Shingles per manufacturer’s instructions

8. Build and Install Doors

a. Cut six 20 ¼” pieces from two 1x4x6. Cut the

other four 1x4x6 to 72”.

b. Assemble the door frames as shown. Join

together with a pocket jig or biscuit cutter.

c. Fasten siding from door cut outs as shown. The Stationary Door has the 2’3 1/4” wide siding.

d. Add hinges, hasp, and barrel bolt on stationary door.

9. Final Steps -

a. Add outside corners. A 1x3 and a 1x4 can make the four outside corners.

b. Use 3 pieces of 1x3’s for door trim.

c. Paint and you’re finished.
