Kokosing’s GrowthBrian Burgett

Over my life, I have witnessed the needs of our companies changing and consequently the offi ces and shops undergoing change too. As a little boy, our offi ce and shop were housed entirely inside a 3,500 square foot block building. The offi ce part of that was 250 square feet (sf) and contained only two desks.

By the time I graduated from college in 1973, our offi ce had taken over the entire 3,500 sf of shop space. This in turn caused us to put up a salvaged building for storage and a shop totaling nearly 9,000 sf. In 1974, we built our fi rst real shop in Fredericktown with an integrated overhead crane and a parts room.

By 1976, we added another 12,000 sf offi ce to the existing 3,500 sf Fredericktown offi ce. That took care of us until 1993 when we purchased Concrete Construction. At that time, we were bursting at the seams in Fredericktown and decided to move the Highway Division to the Concrete Construction offi ce on McKinley Avenue in Columbus, OH. However, this was not enough offi ce space for the highway division so we immediately expanded that offi ce from 5,000 sf to 10,000 sf.

I won’t go into all the details of our building growth over the years…suffi ce it to say, every couple of years we have added space somewhere for good reason. Which brings us to 2018. The fi rst of November we fi nished our most recent offi ce expansion with the addition of 50,000 sf at the Westerville, OH location. This allows us to once again consolidate under one roof the main offi ces of Kokosing Construction (highway) and Kokosing Industrial (treatment plant and industrial). I am pleased to see these two companies in such close proximity once again.

Also during this next year, we will be building a shop facility at the Westerville location. This shop will replace the one we are selling at Kokosing Construction’s old McKinley Avenue location. This new complex will allow our team members to improve our effi ciency in both maintaining equipment and trucking of equipment and materials in this region.

Because I know you all like numbers: Today our 3,500 team members operate from 420,000 sf of warehouse and shop and 150,000 sf of offi ce!

I remember each offi ce and maintenance shop being built and thinking will we ever have a need for all of this space? You and our team members that came before you, have always answered that question with a resounding yes through your desire to grow and take on new challenges. Kokosing’s growth, comes from each of us growing, from taking pride in what we accomplish every day, and owning our 20 square feet. Thank you for all that you do.

Crossroads Phase II Underway in Downtown ColumbusPage 6

The City of Columbus and the surrounding suburbs are growing. Columbus is now the largest city in Ohio, the fourteenth largest city in the United States, and recently ranked as the fourth hottest housing market in the United States. This growth has led to the need for widening and rebuilding of interstates and city streets as well as the building of new roads. Three road projects Kokosing is building in the Columbus area are the IR 70/71 Columbus Crossroads, the IR 270 Widening, and the Hayden Run Boulevard.

Crossroads Phase II Underway in Downtown ColumbusBrian Saylor, Lead Project Engineer

The 2G project is part of the Interstate 70/71 Columbus Crossroads project. ODOT estimates a total of six phases to rebuild I-70/I-71 between the east and west split. The fi rst phase of the Columbus Crossroads was completed by Kokosing approximately eight years ago which involved improvements to I-71 and I-670 interchange. The second phase is divided up into fi ve smaller projects. ODOT estimates it will take approximately seven years to complete the second phase. 2G was awarded on June 7, 2017 and has a contract value of just under $42 million. The project has a very aggressive 18 month schedule, 285 day bridge replacement closure, and numerous city street closures with associated liquidated damages.

The main purpose of this project is to widen the area of traveled lanes to improve traffi c fl ow through the downtown split area. Thus requiring the need to build retaining walls in place of the previously existing slopes. The project consists of building several types of retaining walls on the north side of I-70 WB from the east interchange to the 4th Street Bridge. Wall types range from cast-in-place, secant shaft walls with tilt-up precast panels and full height precast panels in CIP spread footings.

The forward abutment for the future ramp N3 Bridge just east of the existing Grant Street Bridge is also constructed. Portions of Mound Street and Fulton Street are re-constructed including new waterline, drainage, pavement, hardscape and landscape improvements. Mound Street permanently goes one way westbound between Front Street and Fourth Street. Fulton Street permanently goes one way eastbound between Fourth Street and Grant Avenue. Multiple overhead bridges around the interchange get permanent false decking added and debris containment netting added over the travel lanes to protect traveling public until the bridges are rebuilt.

The project has 650 drilled shafts totaling 26,000 feet ranging in size from 3’ diameter to 5’ diameter. Combining the two precast panel designs, the project team erected 471 panels with the largest panel weighing 44,800 lbs. and being 30’ tall. The project also replaced 300’ of 96” reinforced concrete pipe under I-70 westbound at an average depth of 15’. New brick pavers are installed at all city street crosswalks and approximately one mile of new granite curb is installed along city streets.

Many obstacles had to be overcome on the project. Working in downtown Columbus, a bucket cannot be put in the ground without uncovering existing or abandoned utilities. One 20’ section of 12” storm line, approximately 9’ deep had seven utility crossings. The project team also had to deal with aerial utility lines. AT&T fi ber optic lines run through the Grant Avenue bridge feeding Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The fi ber optic lines have to remain active during demolition and construction of the Grant Avenue bridge. Temporary H-Piles were used to support the AT&T lines until the new bridge beams were

erected. The City of Columbus Department of Power, City of Columbus Department of Public Services, Shared Users Communication, AEP and AT&T all have conduits that go through the new Grant Avenue bridge.

Access, laydown, and storage for the project has been a huge challenge due to the downtown location. We have been able to partner with Nationwide Children’s Hospital to alleviate some of our access and storage issues, however, the challenge was still a big factor in daily planning. Materials have to be released in phases and sequentially to not use up all the laydown room. Coordination is critical between our crews, subcontractors, and vendors to ensure material delivery is secure, prompt, and not delaying any operations.

Lane closures have extremely restricted hours at night due to the high traffi c volume on the major interstates in downtown Columbus. A portion of phase two of the mainline interstate work was originally designed for two consecutive weekend lane closures on I-71 southbound through the downtown trench. The project team proposed a single weekend, full shut-down of I-71 southbound to ODOT in lieu of two weekends of traffi c disruption. Not only did this idea reduce the time that the traveling public was inconvenienced, but it also saved a week on the overall project schedule. ODOT saw the benefi t of this idea and agreed to allow the weekend closure. Once ODOT saw how successful and effi cient we could be with a full closure, they allowed a similar closure for structural steel erection on the Grant Street bridge.

During the fi rst six months of construction, the project suff ered a number of unforeseen delays, none of which were caused by Kokosing. Obviously, this put the project behind schedule and ODOT in a diffi cult situation with other major projects planned to begin in 2019. After many meetings with ODOT, an acceleration agreement was negotiated and signed this past July. This was done with the intent to meet the original intended project completion date in 2018. This agreement tasked Kokosing with the challenge of completing 70% of the project in six months, setting the goal of substantial completion by the end of 2018. By December 31, 2018, all traffi c must be in its proposed fi nal alignment with all adequate safety devices operational. From late July to the end of September, the project team has jumped the project progress from 30% complete to about 65% complete. At this time, we are very encouraged and expect to meet the challenge of the Substantial Completion date.

This challenging project has enjoyed much success thanks to the many individuals and specialty crews who have all made contributions. We appreciate everyone’s eff ort with this project.

The $9.2 million Hayden Run Boulevard project was awarded to Kokosing Construction in 2017. It was a short 0.46 miles of roadway in Dublin, Ohio that would connect Avery Road to Hayden Run Boulevard.

This project had some typical roadway/bridge features that Kokosing has performed in the past, but there were three aspects that made the project unique.

Oversized GirdersThe new bridge structure spanned over a CSX railroad with six 151’ long girders. Dealing with girders this length gave our project team several challenges. First was just a matter of how we were going to get the girders close enough to our crane and in position that will allow each girder to be picked and set in one swing. We are proud to say that all team members came together and made the erection phase a great success.

Texas Rail Parapet Another unique aspect of the project is the Texas Rail style parapet. In order to pour this parapet design and keep a smooth fi nish inside every “window,” we decided to use self consolidating concrete. The concrete turned out nice and the City of Columbus is very pleased with how it looks.

MSE Retaining WallThe last big item was the 23,600 sf of MSE retaining wall. These panels were designed with a “Geomega” strap system.

It is a fairly new system and the fi rst time that Kokosing has installed a wall using them. Our crews learned the system and were able to give the city a quality retaining wall.

The rest of the project involved installing new storm and sanitary sewers, street lighting, multiple traffi c control devices, curb and gutter, a pedestrian bike path that runs alongside a wood fence, 12,000 SF of sidewalk, and fi nally the landscaping includes various decorative trees and shrubs that line the roadway.

Thank you to everyone involved with this project: Area Manager Denny Myers, Project Manager Kevin VanDyke, Superintendents Dave Rinehart, Randy Nethers, John LaFever, Jr., Project Engineers, Jeff Geisbuhler, Marcus Durbin, Field Secretary Krista Clemons, and all the crews.

The IR 270 Widening Project in Franklin County consists of rehabilitation and widening an eight mile section of existing IR 270 highway on the west side of Columbus. It begins at the IR 70 / IR 270 Interchange and extends north to US 33 for the Ohio Department of Transportation.

This $61 million project includes widening the outside shoulder, adding a lane to the inside median in each direction with full depth asphalt, and installing a median barrier wall the entire length of the project.

This project also includes replacing and widening the decks on one set of twin bridges over Hayden Run Road, two slab bridges over Raymond Run Creek, and two slab bridges over Cramer Ditch. There is an extensive amount of asphalt on this project, which includes over 380,000 tons of asphalt and 455,000 sy of milling/fi lling of the existing lanes in each direction. The total amount of asphalt accounts for approximately $20 million of the total contract amount.

The other major items of work included in this is project are reconstructing 18,500 sy of the existing concrete pavement at the south end of the project in the southbound direction, installing 108,000 sf of noise wall along IR 270 northbound around Hayden Run Road, 125,000 cy of excavation to be hauled to waste, and installing 2,900 lf of bored pipe underneath IR 270.

The project had one Value Engineering Change Proposal (VECP) that consisted of modifying the maintenance of traffi c (MOT) phasing of IR 270 northbound and southbound from Cemetery Road Overpass (mid-point of the project) through the north end of the project to defer the outside widening in this area from Pre-Phase 1 to Phase 2. This VECP allowed the shoulder widening work to be completed behind barrels in lieu of behind portable concrete barrier (PCB), which eliminated a very narrow working area.

This project isn’t your typical highway widening project. There have been many obstacles to work through, which included tight working areas while constructing the outside shoulders on the south half of the project. This work was done behind portable concrete barrier wall, causing very tight working quarters. Due to this, we had to perform some of the excavation at night by utilizing lane closures to stage and load the hourly trucks. We also used a transfer machine and asphalt paver to install a portion of the 304 aggregate base at night, which isn’t your typical way of performing this work. We have also had a tremendous amount of night work on this project, which consisted mostly of asphalt joint repairs, mill/fi ll existing lanes, and numerous traffi c switches throughout the project. There have been lane closures almost every night starting back in April and by the end of the project there will have been approximately 20 separate traffi c switches.

This project started back in April 2017 and the current contract completion date is May 16, 2019. The 2019 work will consist of mainly surface asphalt, permanent striping, RPMS, and rumble strips.

Management staff on this project are: Area Manager Denny Myers, Project Manager Kevin VanDyke, Asphalt Area Manager Curtis Sebenoler, Superintendent Randy Nethers, Drainage Superintendent JJ LaFever, Bridge Superintendent Kelly Daniels, Project Engineer Jeff Geisbuhler, Project Engineer Marcus Durbin, and Field Secretary Krista Clemons.

1 - Aerial view of IR 270. 2 & 3 - Slipping median barrier wall. 4 - Setting noise wall 2B panels. 5 - Placing 304 aggregate base with transfer machine and asphalt paver at night. 6 - Pile driving at Hayden Run. 7 - Engineered crane mat for pile driving at Hayden Run.

Little Project Gets Big AttentionTina Wolff , Lead Business Development Coordinator

The wastewater department for Angola, Indiana is very good at solving their own problems. But when a critical lift station needed upgrading, they recognized the value of having help of Kokosing’s caliber. Angola used the Indiana’s Guaranteed Savings Contractor (GSC) procurement to hire Kokosing.

The project retrofi tted a wet-pit/dry-pit pump station with submersible pumps. The total contract value was around $400,000 and showed the versatility of the contracting method for small projects.

At the August 2018 Indiana Water Environment Associations annual state-wide conference, Project Manager Matt Cordial co-presented with Angola’s WWTP Superintendent Craig

Williams and Wessler’s Project Manager Aaron Hutton. The audience heard from three diff erent points of view—owner, engineer, contractor—on how this project couldn’t have happened without the scope fl exibility and collaboration that GSC allows.

Matt told the 100+ audience about how partnering leads to better outcomes, fewer construction issues, and lower costs. For this project, Angola truly was a partner, working hand-in-hand with Superintendent Josh Zimmerman. The City purchased the back-up generator, self-performing the bypass pumping, coordinating with the state on maintenance of traffi c, and providing locally manufacturer storm-water pollution prevention materials.

Kokosing Finds $81,000 for Syracuse, IndianaTina Wolff , Lead Business Development Coordinator

This small project for Syracuse, IN replaced oversized mixers with a right sized blower system. Procured through Indiana’s Guaranteed Savings Contracting method, the change in motor size was projected to reduce electricity costs by $62,000 a year, but there was more to be had.

The electric utility NIPSCO has a rebate program that off ers incentives for energy effi ciency and savings. Tina Wolff , with the town’s managers and the project manager for Commonwealth Engineers, completed and submitted

a $62,000 rebate application for the mixer replacement. Kokosing has fi ve other rebate applications for town projects ranging from HVAC equipment replacement to the conversion of street lights to LED. A total of over $81,000 in rebates has been approved by NIPSCO.

Now on any project with signifi cant motor replacement, we are looking at energy effi ciency programs from the power utilities to make sure money isn’t being left on the table.

Kokosing invested signifi cantly in our drainage inspection equipment with the purchase of a brand new CCTV inspection van. We are now fully operational in inspecting and verifying virtually all aspects of drainage systems.

We can now run full-ring laser profi les of any type of fl exible pipes in accordance to the ODOT’s specifi cation. The reports generated by the profi ler will give us a full 3D ovality graph of the pipe, with precise vertical and horizontal measurements given continuously throughout the run. We also have the capabilities of performing very detailed structural inspections using a variety of diff erent cameras. We can use these images to generate a multitude of diff erent reports based on what the project team needs.

Trade Superintendent Kevin Blankenship will be focusing on drainage inspections and working in the Columbus Region.

Exciting and Challenging Work on the Corridor H ProjectJustin Smith, Field Engineer Co-op

West Virginia has lived up to it’s wild and wonderful reputation and has presented many challenges to the Kokosing Construction crews working on the 7.5 mile expansion of U.S. Route 48 between Kerens and Parsons, WV. The four-lane highway, known locally as Corridor H, currently spans from Wardensville to Davis, WV and then from Kerens to Weston, WV where it joins I-79.

The Kokosing project is the fi rst piece of the missing 20 mile section between Kerens and Davis, WV. The roadway spanning the Appalachian Mountains and eastern WV is a lifeline for economic development. Many feel this will resuscitate this area of the state and create a new artery for travel from Washington, DC to central WV. Approximately 110 team members make up 13 crews on the project. Kokosing Construction team members are working in an intense terrain with an unpredictable climate. For instance, the site has experienced +65” of rain in the fi rst 8.5 months of the year.

To date, Kokosing has cleared more than 125 acres of wooded area. One of the most challenging tasks is installation and maintenance of the erosion and settlement controls throughout the project that must be installed as the clearing work is performed. With about half of the job located within the Monongahela National Forest, this becomes an even more important task.

There are several tier-3, or critical streams, within the construction limits. Kokosing crews install erosion control measures from a plan specifi cally developed for the project and have to maintain these controls so that surrounding streams are not negatively impacted. There are several highly-protected native trout streams located in one of the more challenging terrains on the project. By the time the job is completed, 49 sediment basins will be installed and removed and 8.5 miles of culverts and storm drains will be installed.

Earthwork on Corridor H is both challenging and exciting. There are only four main entry points into the 7.5 mile site. Kokosing’s earthwork crews have moved roughly 700,000 cubic yards of dirt working between bridges one and two and bridges four and fi ve. We are working our way towards the bridge three location. These crews are currently utilizing large excavators with articulated trucks and scrapers to remove overburden and establish haul roads. Once the haul roads are established, the large excavators and rock trucks will begin mass excavation processes. The largest single cut is approximately 3 million cubic yards. In total, 12+ million cubic yards of earthwork will be moved.

Structurally, Kokosing has completed the substructure for bridge two and our subcontractor, American Bridge, has started erecting the steel girders for the superstructure. Work is also underway on bridges one and fi ve. Many diff erent sized cranes are being used for operations throughout the project with the largest capacity crane being 250 tons.

Kokosing has successfully performed two critical picks while constructing the pier caps at bridge two. A large crane was used to lift the cap form assembly weighing 115,000 pounds into place. In total, concrete, rebar, and forms for each cap weighed in excess of 1.3 million pounds and was supported by only four 3” x 10’ bolts.

Most recently, Kokosing crews were able to complete a 600 cubic yard footer pour for one of two hollow-core columns at bridge fi ve. Kokosing is utilizing a traveler system to form the hollow-core columns at bridge fi ve. This form system will travel vertically to construct the hollow core piers that will be over 200’ tall when completed. Bridge fi ve is the largest structure on the project as it spans over 1,200’ in length over the valley below and USR 219.

The structure most near completion is a 230 foot cast-in-place (CIP) box culvert on the western end of the project. Kokosing’s crews have used a traveler form system to build most of this structure. The culvert contains approximately 1,200 cubic yards of concrete. Recently, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice visited the project and met with the crew building the culvert to promote his ‘Roads to Prosperity’ economic development program. Kokosing anticipates the culvert will be open to traffi c in the fall of 2018.

This section of Corridor H from Kerens, WV to Parsons, WV is the largest project ever sold and awarded in West Virginia. It is also the largest design build project ever awarded in the state of West Virginia. At project completion, Kokosing crews will have built six bridges including a temporary bridge, a precast box culvert and a cast in place (CIP) box culvert along with 12+ million cubic yards of earthwork and 8.5 miles of drainage

The project completion is projected to occur sometime in the fall of 2020. Crews are working diligently on all facets of the project and Kokosing personnel are looking forward to tackling the challenges as the project turns toward winter.

Cleveland Contract Group 6bScott Mesick, Sr., Area Manager

The Cleveland Contract Group (CCG) consists of eight separate projects to reconstruct Interstate 90 through downtown Cleveland. This includes the northern portions of the intersections of Interstates 71 and 77. In February of 2016, Kokosing Construction Co. was awarded the $30 million design build CCG6b project which consists of the reconstruction of Broadway Avenue over I-77.

Recently, the project reached a major milestone by completing the erection of the precast, post tensioned concrete girders. The girders are the largest ever set by Kokosing bridge crews. Each of the 24 girders stand 9’6” tall, range in length from 119 lf to 138 lf long and weigh approximately 205,000 lbs. each. The majority of the girder segments were set with a 440 ton Manitowoc 16000 crawler crane. A 48” combined sewer required the project to set fi ve of the girders with two 550 ton hydraulic cranes that were able to straddle the sewer line.

A signifi cant eff ort went into the planning, coordination and erection of these girders. A special thank you to the crews, Project Manager Jack Weaver Jr., Superintendent Steve Linder, Iron Worker Superintendent Curt Yost, and Project Engineer Alex Conroy. The project is on schedule to complete the bridge within the allotted 270 days.

Marine Group Quickly Repairs Cable to MainlandTim Paquette, Project Manager

“ The trouble with doing things right the fi rst time is no one appreciates how diffi cult it was.” ~ Walter J. West

Washington Island Cable Repair On June 19, 2018 the Marine Group received a panic call from Washington Island Electric Cooperative’s manager. Washington Island, WI is located in Lake Michigan approximately 3.5 miles northeast of Door County. The manager explained that the submarine power cable that supplies power from the mainland had failed. Their backup generator on the Island was operating but giving them problems. They reached out to a company in Green Bay, WI and were waiting for a reply regarding availability of a rental generator large enough to power the Island. Washington Island Electric was hoping for a completed repair for the July 4th holiday.

The Kokosing Industrial Durocher Marine team immediately sprang into action with upper management submitting a cost proposal, executing subcontracts, and purchase orders. Kerite Cable Services had spare cable available for splicing, a towing crew was available, divers were just completing a project, and the Kokosing 1 barge was in the Cheboygan yard. The Marine shop crew spent the next several days preparing the barge for deployment. KCC Supply ordered cable repair components and shipped them directly to the project site.

Kokosing Delivers the First Major Improvements Project to the Parsons Avenue Water Treatment PlantGreg Hirt, Sr. Project Manager

In March of 2015, Kokosing Industrial commenced work on the $60 million dollar upgrades project for the City of Columbus at the Parsons Avenue Water Plant in Lockbourne, OH. The scope of the project included adding a new clearwell, new recarbonation building and basin, new electrical building, replacement of mechanical and concrete features in four softening basins, prestressed concrete pipe work, soda ash and lime system upgrades, miscellaneous mechanical pipe upgrades, water fi lters rehabilitation, electrical upgrades, new CO2 system, sitework, and asphalt paving. An interesting bit of history is that in the mid-80’s, Kokosing helped build the original Parsons Avenue plant. This included the fi rst clearwell and the four softening basins that we did work on. Although this is the fi rst major upgrade the plant has undergone since originally built almost 40 years ago, Kokosing has constructed numerous improvement projects over the years.

Clearwell The new clearwell is very similar to the one Kokosing built adjacent to it during the plant’s initial construction. It has an 11 million gallon capacity with a footprint of 450’ long and 250’ wide. It required 135,000 cy of excavation and backfi ll. The tank is entirely concrete and required over 21,000 cy. The clearwell was constructed on existing sloping terrain and was bound by existing 48” and 60” prestressed waterlines on two sides and the existing clearwell on a third side.

The orientation of the tank presented challenges with excavation and shoring and also crane and concrete pump placement. Pre-planning our exact pump and crane locations allowed us to plan construction joints, shoring and wall form layouts, and concrete placements without any major confl icts. There were a couple signifi cant items that made construction of the tank a success. During bid time it was determined that a Peri shoring system would be an excellent fi t for the project. The Peri top slab shoring system provided fantastic production rates while being very safe and simple to use.

There was enough shoring required that Kokosing was able to justify purchasing the system, saving us money in the future. Additionally, early in the construction we recognized the soils were not draining well, the excavation was in a drainage area, and we needed to ensure the construction would not be aff ected with winter and spring approaching. After brainstorming, we decided to install a large 4” perforated tile underdrain system to facilitate drainage.

As soon as the soils dried, it was critical to pour the mudmat. After discussing with the team, we decided to spend additional money to include poly fi bers in the mudmat at twice the normal amount. This allowed us to move our cranes, pump trucks and concrete trucks anywhere in the structure, in any weather, without damaging the mudmat and ruining the subgrade.

Although the structure was fairly straightforward, it took signifi cant fi eld planning eff orts to keep shoring, rebar, formwork, concrete, form and pour crews, pipe crews, cranes, and pump trucks to operate as effi cient as we expected. In all aspects, construction of the tank was a great success.

Recarbonation Building and Basin The recarbonation building lower fl oor was an extension of the plant’s existing utility tunnel and the upper fl oor housed an electrical room, storage room, and a CO2 feed room for the recarbonation basin. Tight work areas and existing 60’ prestressed piping required careful sequencing to install lagging and phase the concrete work to build around major waterlines that had to remain in service, but also construct enough of the facility to permit deep pipe tie-ins that we had short windows for.

Planning and execution of the tie-ins was critical as we were installing 60” prestressed waterline encased in reinforced concrete, under the recarbonation building. There was no room for error.

1 - Crews are forming recarbonation building walls and the recarbonation basin valve vault slab. 2 - Crews are installing shoring in the clearwell. 3 - Brett Cullison, Casey Ott, and Jake Kumler form clearwell baffl e wall and shored slab support columns. 4 - Masonry work is being performed for the above grade portion of the recarbonation building. 5 - Jason Looker, Max Seyfried, and Steve Conley install the new softening basin process equipment. Crews install the new softening basin process equipment. 6 - Jeff Adams and Harold Curtis backfi ll the clearwell top slab. 7 - Crews are forming the recarbonation basin valve vault walls. 8 - Kokosing Construction crews performed all of the paving for the project.

Cont’d. on page 36...

We had a great group of people that built the project. Everyone respected each

other’s responsibilities, cared for each other, listened to suggestions, and allowed themselves to believe we could build a big

project without any serious injuries. - Greg Hirt ”

36Hoot Owl August-December 2018

Softening BasinsThe softening basin modifi cations included reconstruction of four 140’ diameter softening basins. These tanks and the associated process equipment were also originally constructed by Kokosing during the initial construction of the plant. A complete process equipment demolition and installation was performed in two primary tanks and a partial replacement was required in two secondary tanks. In addition, the existing grout topping was replaced along with signifi cant structural slab repairs that we added after its condition was revealed to the engineers. The basins work required signifi cant coordination between process equipment and concrete demolition, process equipment erections, and concrete preparation and placement. In addition to the added concrete scope, there were equipment delivery challenges that jeopardized our progress, but good coordination and teamwork were the diff erence makers in beating the cold weather and meeting our milestone dates.

Interior/Mechanical There were multiple items that kept the mechanical crews busy. The longest duration item was rehabilitation of the existing water fi lters, which included replacement of the fi lter media, replacement of the surface wash piping, replacement of the 36” gullet drain valves, replacement of 20” rate of fl ow valves, and new handrail. The other major system Kokosing modifi ed was the lime and soda ash conveyance system. We replaced the piping from the silos and into the plant and also the silo feed system and modifi cations to the day bins. A new compressed air system to improve chemical conveyance was also installed.

Additional work performed was replacement of multiple large raw water valves from 36”-66” diameter, meters, piping, installation of manual and operated sluice gates, installation of the buried and exposed stainless steel CO2 system piping and manifolds, miscellaneous chemical treatment system piping, softening basin chemical and water piping, installation of the recarbonation basin drainage system and pumps, and demolition of multiple piping systems.

Yard PipeThe yard piping required signifi cant pre-planning, multiple crews, some of Kokosing’s largest equipment, and double-shifted work to reach required milestones. There was constant coordination with the progress of the clearwell and recarbonation areas not only for tie-ins, but also to ensure crews were not in each other’s’ way.

The most challenging eff ort was in the clearwell area and included 60” prestressed pipe, multiple valves, and valve vaults at 30’ depths. With excavations at that depth, existing utilities become a major concern. In recognizing this, we decided to remove and re-lay a perfectly good 48” prestressed concrete water main. The new 60” pipe was underneath it, shoring the pipe would have been extremely costly, and there were no options to change the alignment of either run.

Currently, we are putting the fi nal touches on the project, with the contract work complete. We have worked over 229,000 man-hours without a recordable injury and have cerebrated major safety milestones along the way. This is a fantastic achievement and everyone who contributed to this project should be very proud.

Early in the project it felt like we had the formula to win. We had a good project, a good owner, and a good construction manager. Those are nice to have, but the real diff erence maker was our people. We had a wide range of backgrounds and personalities. We had folks that were new to the industry and those with over 40 years of service. With our diff erences we bring perspective. Open dialog brought the best ideas to the table and allowed everyone to make a meaningful contribution to the project.

Crew Aids in Saving a LifeBrock Burgett, Superintendent

At approximately 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2018, a 52-year-old woman went into cardiac arrest while driving south on I-271 in the contrafl ow lane. Her vehicle came to a stop near the Rockside Road exit, causing a traffi c backup on the narrow contrafl ow lane that is lined with concrete construction barriers.

A Kokosing Construction crew on the I-271 project consisting of Kaleb Tobien, Brock Burgett, Mike Medves, Mike Kern, and Kenny Wolf were nearby fi nishing work from a traffi c switch from the previous night. The project crew assisted the Hudson EMS personnel with moving equipment across the highway, providing traffi c control on scene, and even used equipment to move the construction barriers to allow the Warrensville Heights ambulance to enter and return through the closed exit ramp.

This allowed a Hudson paramedic and EMT to cross the construction barrier wall and aid the patient. After 20 minutes of life-saving medication, while oxygen was being administered, the patient miraculously started breathing on her own. Diana McMurtrey with the Hudson EMT said, “Everyone pulled together. The construction workers were wonderful.

They directed traffi c to make sure I could get across the highway, and they helped bring our equipment to the scene. We couldn’t have done it without them.”

Thanks to all the individuals and departments who came together to help with this incident, including Sgt. Reed, a passerby who was a nurse, the crew from Kokosing Construction, and the Bedford Heights and Warrensville Heights Fire Departments that arrived on scene. It was another example of how people immediately off ered to help, doing things that were are outside their normal job responsibilities.

Bill Burgett Helping HandsDan Greisbach, Retiree

Each year the Kokosing retiree group does a project to help someone who needs a helping hand. This year, Tom and Paula Kasper of Butler, OH were in great need of some help. Their 1,500’ driveway was all washed out and almost impossible to drive on. Tom has had several heart attacks and many other health issues.

Tom is Dan Griesbach’s brother-in-law and he brought his name up at a retiree meeting as a great project for the Bill Burgett Helping Hands Day. It was approved.

Thanks to the Burgett family and the many retirees who gave up valuable time, the project took only two days. The Kaspers could not believe anyone would do this and couldn’t thank them enough. Crew included Dave Hall, Bob Kennedy, Ed Baldy, Lonnie Stull, Steve Kodger, Dallas Popham, Jim Fox, Wayne Ousely, and Dan Griesbach.

If you would like to help on one of these projects, please contact Diane Prosser at the Fredericktown offi ce at [email protected] or 740.848.4926.

Delivering Bags of HopeSusan Krantz, KMI Controller

It all started with a Facebook post – “Have a purse at home you no longer use? Fill it with snacks, sanitary and hygiene products. Next time you see a homeless woman, give it to her.” That gave Pam McNeil an idea. A purse might be diffi cult to carry around, but what about a drawstring backpack. She presented the idea to her friends: Mary Blue, Susan Krantz, Becky Rayburn, Barbara Colebank, Becky’s daughter Jenna Kirk, and Susan’s sister, Nancy Butler. All were on board.

Pam found a great deal on the backpacks and purchased 20. We made a list of items to put in the backpacks, split up the list, and made the purchases. We used a conference room in the Westerville offi ce to fi ll the backpacks.

While dropping off a check for the food drive, Gina Carner delivered ten of the backpacks to Holy Family Church on the west side of Columbus. Becky delivered ten backpacks to Haven House of Pickaway County.

It was a fun group project and one we plan to repeat! We will be adding bags for men and children.

If anyone is interested in donating items or money to increase the number of bags that can be distributed, please contact Susan Krantz (KMI), Becky Rayburn (Olen) or Mary Blue (KCC). We would also like to encourage everyone to consider a similar project in your home towns or project locations. There is no shortage of people that could use a little hope and kindness.

Pam McNeil is a retiree from the Kokosing Construction’s Mansfi eld Asphalt offi ce, Susan Krantz is KMI’s Controller, Mary Blue is a Contract Administrator for Kokosing Construction’s Asphalt Group, Becky Rayburn is the Accounting Payable/Receivable Clerk with The Olen Corporation, and Gina Carner is an Estimating Assistant with Kokosing Construction.

One City Against Heroin ProjectMatt Gartner, Superintendent

There is an acute lack of heroin addiction recovery housing in the northern suburbs of Cincinnati and nothing in Warren County. Those recovering from addiction need a safe place where they can live while learning how to reintegrate into society. One City Against Heroin (OCAH) is a non-profi t business created from members of Cincinnati based Crossroads Community Church. Crossroads Community Church purchased a home in Warren County that opened in

June 2018. Residents (7-8) have a safe, sober-living home with wrap around treatment services.

Spencer Beeching coordinated a weekend blitz to beautify the exterior of OCAH recovery home. Kokosing volunteers Matt Gartner, Chris Daugherty, Jeff Albers, Brian Blevins, and Scott Elliott built them a fi re pit and a shelter concrete pad.

Susan Krantz, Nancy Butler, Mary Blue, and Becky Rayburn fi lling backpacks for homeless women.

Do You Have a Child ID Kit?Abduction Facts:The fi rst step in protecting your child from potential abductors is to know what you’re dealing with. Here are some important -- and potentially surprising -- facts about child abductions in the United States:• According to the National Incidence Studies of Missing,

Abducted, Runaway and Thrown-away Children (NISMART II) there are over 2,100 children reported missing every single day in the United States. That equates to a child reported missing every 41 seconds!

• In 80% of abductions by strangers, the fi rst contact between the child and the abductor occurs within a quarter mile of the child’s home.

• Based on the identity of the perpetrator, there are three distinct types of kidnapping: family kidnapping, acquaintance kidnapping, and/or stranger kidnapping.

• Most potential abductors grab their victims on the street or try to lure them into their vehicles.

• Acting quickly is critical. About 74% of abducted children who are ultimately murdered are dead within three hours.

• One in fi ve children ages 10 to 17 receive unwanted sexual solicitations on-line.

• Runaways and thrown-away children are extremely vulnerable as they try to fend for themselves. 2/3 of them are sexually solicited within the fi rst 48 hours of hitting the streets. These children are prime targets for human traffi ckers. After all, when a runaway gets abducted, who reports it?

Child ID KitOne of the most important tools for law enforcement when searching for a missing child is an up-to-date, good quality photo along with descriptive information. A Child ID Kit is a simple, yet eff ective, tool and a good document to have fi lled out in case of an emergency.

What Should be in My Child’s ID Kit?Photo Identifi cation (ID)Families should have current photos of their children.

• Show the child’s full face in color.• Be in a digital format and able to be quickly accessed.• Capture the way the child really looks.• Be updated at least every six months.

DescriptionYou should include a complete description of your child. The description should include:

• Name • Nickname • Date of Birth• Sex • Hair color/style • Eye color

• Weight • Height • Glasses and braces • Identifying marks such as scars, birthmarks, tattoos, or piercings

Dental X-rays, charting, and bite impressionsYou should update dental charts every two years.

FingerprintsHave your child’s fi ngerprints taken by a trained professional. If your child is missing, law enforcement can enter the prints into the FBI’s National Crime Information Center database.

DNA sampleThere are many DNA collection kits available, but it is simple for you to collect a sample on your own. Items rich in DNA include an old toothbrush, baby teeth, or a hairbrush.

Medical reportsCheck with your child’s doctor to make sure their medical records are readily accessible. Medical records, such as X-rays, permanent scars, blemishes, birthmarks, and documentation of broken bones, can be helpful in identifying a recovered child.

Where can I get a Child ID Kit?Please take the time and fi ll out a Child ID Kit for each of your children. Go to the this link for a Child ID Kit:www.missingkids.com/ourwork/publications/safety/childidkitNever keep your child’s information on a public database. Keep in a safe place that only the parent/guardian has access.

No program or identifi cation tool will keep children safe or prevent abductions 100% of the time. Parents, guardians and members of the community must all work together to help ensure children will be protected and have access to help if they need it. Child safety is all our responsibilities.

Families Within the Kokosing FamilyThe Oswalts

As with many Kokosing team members, lineage runs deep and the story of how they came to Kokosing is very similar. A family member becomes employed, then inspires their children to join the Kokosing family as their experience is one they choose to share. For the Oswalts, that started three generations ago when Royd Oswalt become an Operator for Kokosing.

Royd’s son, Roger Oswalt, joined Kokosing in 1984 as a Pipelayer. He is currently a Project Superintendent for Kokosing Construction. In 1999, Roger’s son, Jason Oswalt, began working in the Fredericktown Yard. He took night courses and obtained an Associate’s degree in Electrical

Engineering from North Central State. Jason is now an Electrician and supports Kokosing Materials working on the many asphalt facilities throughout the state.

As with tight families, Roger and Jason even spend their free time together, hunting, fi shing, or working on home projects. Jason lives just a few minutes away from his parents. He likes knowing he can be there very quickly when his mom calls and enjoys helping his dad with projects.
