A few miles from busy Interstate 94 (linking the city to Minneapolis and Chicago), you’ll find the Red Cedar State Trail. This trail is a part of the Chippewa Valley Trail System, and it is nestled along 14 miles of the Red Cedar River and continues for another 23 miles to other destinations.
A COLORFUL HISTORY IN DUNN COUNTYOne way to know someplace is to discover its past. With a history that spans the globe, Menomonie’s history is only rivaled by what its future holds.
A STEP BACK IN HISTORY• Menomonie was once the headquarters of the largest lumber company in the world.• The Tainter Gate invented in Menomonie is found in dams worldwide including Holland, Switzerland and Italy.• Harry Armenius Miller, considered the greatest creative figure in the history of the American racing car, grew up in Menomonie.• Sandstone from Dunn County quarries was highly prized by stonemasons and carvers and can be found in buildings as far as New York City.• One of the bearers of the Civil War mascot “Old Abe” was from Dunn County.

The museum interprets area history through extensive exhibits. It is also home to the Dunn County Genealogical Society. • Empire in Pine Museum is an award winning display which exhibits the rich logging and sandstone quarry history of the Red Cedar Valley. Located six miles south of Menomonie on State Hwy. 25, turn left on County C at Downsville.
In 1970, the Dunn County Historical Society organized and created the Caddie Woodlawn Historical Park. Caroline Augusta Woodhouse inspired “Caddie Woodlawn” in a book written by her granddaughter, Carol Ryrie Brink. The book won the 1935 Newbery Medal for children’s literature. The park and wayside is located nine miles south of Menomonie on Hwy 25.
Colfax Railroad Museum is rich in the railway history for the area; it is located in the community of Colfax.
