Term 3 is underway and this term promises to be a very busy one for students. Many of the sporting and cultural opportunities cancelled in Term 2 have been replaced by other events over Term 3. These are primarily coast based as we continue to claw back learning time for our students, time lost over the lockdown period. Parent Evenings have just been completed. Tuesday night was a new experience as the interviews took place without the benefit of power. In some cases, head lamps, bike lights, torches and phones were the only sources of light. Thank you to all the parents who attended one or both evenings. We want to continue to work with you to support your childs learning. Please feel free to contact the school or your teacher any time – we really need and want your input. Once students returned from the lockdown, attendance rates at school have been high and it is no coincidence that our achievement rates over this period have also risen. We expect all our students to attend all day, every day – this gives them the best chance to succeed and we value your support to make this happen. If your child is unable to attend on any particular day, please contact the office and send your child to school with a note on their return. Our new attendance officer will also be following up on longer term absence. If you are having trouble getting your child to attend school, please contact us and we will support you as much as we can. Those students who do not attend regularly will be unable to take advantage of the many other opportunities available for students at school. This includes sports teams, cultural events and the school ball. Our expectation is 90%+ attendance for all students. Uniform is also an area of focus. The vast majority of our students wear this uniform with pride. There are however, a few that choose not to abide by the uniform code and should expect to be challenged on this. It includes non-uniform items and also the extra jewellery that is not part of our uniform code. As a school, we have just purchased a large stock of additional uniform to support those with short term uniform needs. Each day, any student arriving in non-uniform will be directed to our uniform room and provided with a uniform alternative for the day. As above, those choosing to continually flout the uniform rules should not expect to have the privilege of representing the school in events. For our Year 13 students, Term 3 is a critical term in many ways. Many of them have set their sights on what nextand the planning for that often happens during this term. There is plenty of excitement, nervousness and apprehension during this time. Please let us know if we can provide any further support for these students. For me, the most exciting aspect is the breadth of next stepsthat these students are considering. This includes apprenticeships, armed forces, beauty, travel, university, teaching, hospitality and work. Having a goal, and the means to achieve that goal, are critical for these students and our role is to support them in finding a pathway that interests them and then encourage and help them gain the necessary qualifications to match their goal. Kia mau kite tokanga nui-a-noho, There is no place like home – Never truer than today!

Invitation to attend Year 10 Camp 2020 As part of junior activity week at the end of the year, Year 10 students have the opportunity to participate in an exciting Outdoor Education camp from 6 – 9 December 2020. The purpose of the camp is to complete their last junior year at high school with 35 of their peers and for them to be involved in activities that offer challenges. They will also develop skills in, team building, self-awareness and leadership skills, and have fun doing it! Activities include: Sea kayaking, tramping and other team building activities at Whenua Iti, near Motueka. As we can only take 36 students, there is an application process. Application forms have been sent out to each child in Year 10. Your child will need to complete this form if they would like to take up this opportunity. Attendance and behaviour will also be looked at in this process. Please return application forms to the School office by Monday 3 August. A letter with information and the application form has been handed out to students and emailed to all Year 10 parents/caregivers. If your child is selected, the cost of attending camp is $75.00 which is part of the cost for equipment hire, transport, food, instructors and accommodation fees. This is excellent value for money for the experiences that the students will have. The Board of Trustees have subsidised this camp to ensure students have a high quality experience. Please note that this is an optional activity, participation is voluntary. Further details will be sent out prior to the start of the camp, once the 36 students have been selected, which will outline the consent process, camp cost payment, the camp programme and equipment list. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me on the email address below. Kind regards

During Term two, the Year 10E Social Studies class studied the topic Resources and Sustainability. The class undertook a litter study around the school and also around some streets in Westport. They visited the local Recycling Centre to see what happens to Westport’s waste and to discover where this waste gets sent to. A group of students will present their findings to the school in the near future. The students have also written to the Buller District Council to outline their concerns regarding the litter in the local town. The photograph shows students at the Recycling Centre on Craddock Drive. Buller High School is proud to be working with “The Art of Learning New Zealand”, in presenting workshops to our Senior School on Resilience and Study. Year 11 students will be participating on Tuesday 4 August and the Year 12/13 students on Wednesday 5 August. The students will participate for a full school day. They will reset their thinking about learning, how to study, what failure means and how to change their reactions when things start getting tough.

We are holding a Parents/Caregivers evening on

Tuesday 4 August at 7pm in the School Hall. Come along and learn about the best ways to get your student over the line when it comes to Exam Prep. With everyone on the same page, we can give the students the best chance of being successful. Tea/coffee and biscuits provided afterwards.
