Narrative ConflictsThe films equilibrium begins with someone (Ricky) being released from prison, this already shapes the society as being filled with criminal acts, as someone being a arrested and released from prison is a daily normal occurrence.Character conflicts throughout the film change and become more prominent than others. Examples of the conflicts between characters are

Ricky – Beverly (Ricky's mum) Ricky – Society Curtis – Rios family Beverly - Rios family Ricky - Leon Wisdom- Society Ricky – Godfrey Wisdom- Godfrey

Conflicts between Ricky and Wisdom who have seeming grown up in the area and have taken on traits that are evident in the area rather than home e.g. the way they speak, act and the violence they commit.

SuspenseBecause the society is crime ridden the authorities don’t stand as reinforcement but more like peace keepers. The lack if reinforcement increases the suspense as all the crimes within the film take place with out consequence.

The tension between the rival gang groups increases dramatically when wisdom shoots Godfrey's dog, also the breaking and beating of Wisdoms car by Godfrey and a friend increases the tension, as the audience can infer that the acts will become more violent after this. The shoot out within Godfreys house builds the suspense of how the two are going to escape the repetitive crime between the two rivals. The suspension reaches a high when Ricky discovers Wisdoms body in his house. This suspended the audience as Ricky could also be shot, at which he is as he tries to run away by getting the train.
