The explosive situation in Relela, Bolobedu South, was calm at the time of going to press, but remains tense after three children went missing in the neighbouring village of Kubyana. However, local residents fear new unrest over the weekend.

The children were later found in the boot of the car of a local businessman. A three year-old boy died, while the other two are in a critical condition.

According to Col Ronel Ott o, provincial spokesperson for the Police in Limpopo, the children were playing in a car parked next to the road in Kubyana. “They locked themselves in and when the owner of the car came home, he found the children in the car. He called the police who rescued the children. They are said to have been badly dehydrated.

Ott o said renewed anger in the

community fl ared up and the man’s business, as well as his house and a car, was set alight. “The insinuations are that he wanted to hide the children to use them for muti purposes. We have requested a judicial inquest into the death of the child.” She said the police were deployed to the area to monitor the situation.

Police Commissioner visitNational Police Commissioner, Genl

Riah Phiyega, visited the hot spot on Wednesday afternoon and warned that police would ensure stability, law and order, following a week of violent protests that had so far claimed the lives of three people.

Phiyega addressed the media during a visit to the violence-torn village and warned that the community should refrain from criminal activities and allow police investigations to continue without disturbance.

Her visit followed after violent protests started last weekend, after the mutilated body of a 20-year-old woman, Ms Kgomotso Raolane (20), of Relela, had been found in bushes in the area.

to demand an immediate arrest of the suspects.

Houses of families of the people who were suspects were torched. Four men were taken in for questioning, but were released because there was no evidence to link them to the murder.

On Tuesday, two more people were killed when police opened fi re on about 3 000 protesters who surrounded the police station and threatened to burn it down. They also destroyed the window panes and damaged some nineteen police vehicles with stones and petrol bombs.

“Police retaliated and two members of the community were killed. Eleven police offi cers were injured and taken to hospital, where they were treated and discharged,” Phiyega said.

• Good news: the potholes littering our roads in Tzaneen are rapidly being repaired. Is this simply the municipality executing their duties or is it a case of politicking? What do you think?

maak, as ‘t ware ‘n gegewe, geen gebreuke in dié land nie.

‘n Tragiese tragedie, reken Vlieg!

Vlieg

A recent shock attack by a crocodile in the Ba-lule Private Nature Reserve ended with only minor injuries for the victim, thanks to the vig-ilance of those present and the excellent emer-gency services.

Ms Estie van Heerden was assisting a pho-tographer during a photo shoot near a dam, and was reflecting light off the lens some dis-tance from the water’s edge when out of no-where a 2,5 meter crocodile snapped at her.

The crocodile bit into her calf and started to pull her into the water, but Estie, who is a very strong athlete, managed to put up sturdy re-sistance which probably saved her life.

She is a graphic designer and was visiting from Johan-nesburg to assist her cousin, Ms Sharon Haussmann, with photos for the new catalogue for her company. The incident took place on the family’s farm, and Hauss-mann is keen to make it clear that this was not a case of inexperienced tourists taking risks with animals.

“We have owned this farm (Brussels Farm) all of our

lives and have never had an incident like this. We respect wild animals and have never pro-voked them”, she says. She adds that they were taking all the necessary precautions, and were not working right on the water’s edge.

Fortunately her father managed to jump in be-tween Estie and the crocodile and shot it, allow-ing Estie to escape. The family is devastated at having been forced to take this drastic measure.

Haussmann says her cousin has nothing but praise for the local emergency services. The in-cident took place before 06:00, but Quemic Med-ical Response answered the call immediately

and was already waiting at the reserve’s gate when the family arrived there. The ambulance even had a doctor on board, because of the severity of the incident. Van Heerden was transported to Phalaborwa Clinix Hospital, and she is now recovering well. She is not expected to have any permanent damage, and her only regret is that she had to miss out on the Ironman triathlon event!

Many people have been left without shelter after heavy rain accompanied by strong wind hit Giyani since last weekend. Heavy rain and strong winds also caused damage to trees, roads, power lines and dams in and around Tzaneen.

According to the Greater Giyani Municipality’s (GGM) spokesperson, Mr Steve Mabunda, the storm has caused severe damage in villages.

“So far we’ve received news of more than thirty houses that were affected at Xikukwani and around twenty at

Makoxa…not to mention other villages,” he said. One of the victims at Xikukwani village, Ms Ester Mash-

aba, the mother of three yolung kids, said her roof were blown off first, and then the walls collapsed.

Fortunately they were not injured.Mabunda said the GGM had formed a Joint Operation

Committee (JOC) in order to improve the response time on those that have been affected by the storm.

Storm wreaks havoc in Mopani

Police failed mourning family

Letsitele police have allegedly lost the docket of a 17-year-old deceased girl identi ed as Jamela Mushwana from Nkowankowa, who went missing on 22 November 2013. The Bulletin reported on the teen’s

disappearance in our 13 December edition. Ms Ophelia Mushwana said Ritavi police told her to ask the community and her family in section A to assist them in the search for her daughter. According to Mushwana, a Const Mashete, who was handling the case at the time, promised her continuous feedback, but he had failed to do so. Mushwana said after an intensive search she found her daughter’s body at Letaba Hospital’s mortuary on 30 December. Apparently she had been there for more than a month.Mushwana said Mashete again failed to keep them updated. “He refused to provide any information regarding my daughter’s death,”

she said. When the Bulletin asked Mashete about the missing docket, he said he had no authority to speak to the media. The investigating o cer, Capt Hlengani Maswanganyi, con rmed that no arrests have been made. The post mortem report had not revealed any information regarding the cause of death. Police apparently told the Mushwana family that her decomposed body was found under a bridge at Letsitele. She said her daughter loved spending time with her friends. Police have allegedly questioned three possible suspects who apparently are pharmacists. Two of them have admitted talking to her over the phone on her day of disappearance, while the other one spoke to her weeks before she disappeared. Ritavi police handed the case over to Letsitele Police, but they have allegedly failed to produce a docket pertaining to the teen’s disappearance.Jamela was buried on 3 January. Her death leaves a grieving family with no answers of what could have happened on that fateful day.

Man replaces donkeysOnly one of the three donkeys that were chopped up last week in a t of rage has been replaced. The 32-year-old Mr Sidwell Baloyi of Mavalani, Giyani, was ordered by magistrate Gordon Hlungwani to replace the three donkeys, as they were Mr Joel Malatjie’s main income generator. Baloyi promised to replace

the second donkey by 15 February. He said a donkey cost R1 500 and he cannot a ord it because he earns only R600 per month. Malatjie said it did not matter how long it takes to replace the donkeys, as long as he did not lose his income.

Mr Ian Houston (45) has been appointed Headmaster of Unicorn Preparatory in Tza-neen, as Mr Alan Goodwin (61) has retired to Pretoria.

Houston has been Deputy Head at the school since 2009 and taught Maths to Grade 7’s. Prior to coming to Tzaneen, Houston was Deputy Principal at Wendywood Primary in Johannesburg. He is the first born of four boys and always wanted to teach. His moth-er was a teacher and his father had a garage. Houston grew up in Krugersdorp.

He joined the SA Air Force for three years and then became catering manager at the Roodepoort Country Club for a year. Hou-ston was initially at the Pretoria College of Education. When the Government closed it down, he went on to complete his teacher’s education at the Johannesburg College of Ed-ucation.

He studied Education Law, Management and Schools Systems to complete his Hon-ours Degree through Potchefstroom Univer-sity. He will begin his Masters in 2015.

This year’s school theme is “Gratitude is the right attitude.” It’s an initiative to make learn-ers aware of what they have in life. The aim of the theme is to make pupils aware not to take anything for granted.

Houston has been challenged to swim this year’s Ebenezer Mile, has started training and is enjoying the exercise. He did club swim-ming as a child, so it’s a matter of training and getting fit now. He says that there have

The MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Sett lements and Traditional Af-fairs (CoGHSTA) in Limpopo, Mr Ishmael Kgetjepe (photo right), says there is nothing stopping this year’s matrics from achiev-ing good results, since they were part of the “born-free” generation and the conditions were bett er.

Speaking during a visit to two high schools in Giyani where he congratulated the two for being consisten t in producing good re-sults, the MEC said “those who were born after 1994 had all the resources they needed

to make them successful learners”.He told the pupils that good things come

through hard work. “Don’t wait for hand-outs, you will only get the leftovers. If you want to live like a king, you must work like a slave,” he said.

The MEC said there were incentives for achieving good results. “You can win mon-ey to further your education. You can even win a car,” he told the matrics.

The schools are said to have done well by being consistent in their pass rates in the past fi fteen years. Risinga High got a 91% pass

in its 2013 results, while Giyani High got an 88,6% pass.

Speaking during the visit to the two schools, Mopani District Municipality’s mayor Joshua Matlou urged pupils to re-frain from fancy hairstyles.

“A learner must look like a school child not someone’s girlfriend. This fancy hairstyle thing will distract you from concentrating.”

In response, the principal of Giyani High, Mr Edwin Chavalala, promised the MEC that the school would strive for a 100% per-cent pass rate this year.

Derek (86) and Shirley (81) Ivy have been living at Macadamia Retirement Village for ten years.

This remarkable couple helped Professor Jan Bonsma from the University of Pretoria devel-op the Bonsmara catt le breed. It is a low cost productive effi cient animal, needs minimal care and fi tt ed into Derek’s conservation ethics.

The Bonsmara breed is made up of the South African Afrikaner breed and exotic beef breeds. It was a complicated process that took many years. The breed is now also in Australia, Argentina and the USA.

The farm outside Munnik had been in the Ivy family since 1919. The couple started breeding commercial catt le in 1954 on an un-developed farm. They built a house, roads, fences, kraals and watering points over the years and later bought three neighbouring farms, making up a farm of 3,500 hectares.

They joined the Bonsmara Breeders Society in 1962 and had 700 Bonsmara catt le on their farm. Derek served on the Bonsmara Coun-cil and was a senior catt le inspector for the breed for twenty years. Shirley was the fi rst woman to be appointed senior inspector in the Breed Society.

They received the fi rst Farmers Weekly Cup for the best performing cow in the Per-formance Testing Scheme in 1979 and the award for the most productive large cow herd in 1990. In 1982 they won the Media Farmer of the Year award and Grassland Farmer of the Year in 1983. They received recognition of dedicated service to the com-munity for the advancement of the sustain-able utilisation, conservation and protection of the agricultural resources of SA in 1992.

Derek gave lectures on veld management and catt le breeding at farmers’ days and seminars in SA, the USA, New Zealand and Australia. He also lectured at the former University of the North (now Limpopo) for twelve years. Shirley and one of their sons ran the farm while he was at university.

Shirley says “I’d rather stick a nee-dle in a cow than bake a cake.”

Their family of four sons took a keen interest in the farm and Al-lan ran the farm

and started a butchery and feedlot before leaving for the UK. One son died and the Ivy couple have ten grandchildren.

Derek has writt en four booklets with Shirley as editor, son Allan as photographer and son Mark as compiler of fi gures, tables, illustrations and layout. The booklets are: Beef Farming with Bonsmaras in the Bush-veld; Veld Management in Gazankulu; Eco-wise (a history and ecology course for local and overseas students) and Profi table Beef Catt le Production.

They sold the B o n s m a r a stud herd in 1999 after nine bad d r o u g h t

years and changed to plains game farm-ing. Mark successfully runs the game farm, known as Ivy Safaris. It can accommodate 22 guests and is ecotourism based. Mark is strict about ethics when it comes to hunting and bow hunting.

The farm is no longer owned by the family as it was bought by the government for land restitution in 2003. Derek says “redistribu-tion is this country’s biggest mistake. Only

private enterprise should be involved in agriculture.”

Shirley brought the card game bridge to Macadamia. While she plays bridge Derek takes garden-er Lucas fi shing on the Tzaneen Dam. The Ivy couple met at Dur-ban University and went out for

fi ve years before gett ing married. They will celebrate their

60 th wedding anniver-sary in July and main-tain that the secret to their successful marriage is being able to make up af-ter a row.

Today we proudly introduce Mr Derek and Ms Shirley Ivy from Tzaneen, in yet another presentation in our exclusive series about the veterans who contributed so much over many years to establish the colourful community of the Mopani region. Sue Ettmayr interviewed them at their cosy home in the

Giyani Hot Spurs looks set to climb some steps up the ladder to posi-tion three in the SAFA Second Division League, after a 1-0 win over the weekend against Joe Express FC. The win on Saturday at Giya-ni stadium was the second in row for Spurs, after winning 4-0 on Wednesday against Rospa United.

Now playing under a new coach, Funny Bilankulu, the Spurs seem to have the right combination of players to reach its dream of repre-senting the community of Giyani at national fi rst division and later the province at premiership level.

Asked about the team’s outstanding performance on Saturday, Bilankulu said the trick lied in gett ing to know and understand the players’ needs fi rst, in order to get them to play as a united team. “I try to meet them halfway by learning to understand their needs and grievances,” he said, adding that “happy players guarantee good team performance.”

With a game in hand, Spurs are well placed to move further to the top position in the league — provided that they sustain their current form and win their next game.

Meanwhile, Joe Express FC’s coach Edwin Rampedi blames his team’s loss on the lack of commitment from his side, saying they were not playing at their best. “The game was tough but if we had done our homework and played as a united team, we could have won,” he said. His team was in position four before the Saturday match.

sensei Ivan Steyn.

Oorlede koning Dingaan se gevleuelde woorde, “Bulalani Abathakhathi”, was Eine Kleine Nachtmusik in vergelyking!

Julle gaan Fikile regkry sonder ‘n hartsverandering, sê Oubal!
