INSIDE:

Letaba speel soos kampioene

Re-launch of Golden Acres security estate brings new hope for residents and prospective residents.

A combined eff ort between AgriLimpopo and the Department of Agriculture in the province will bring new life to agriculture and land re-form in Limpopo.

A workshop on land aff airs and agricultural development was held in Polokwane, to estab-lish a sensible strategy towards land matt ers and the implications of certain laws regarding agricultural development.

It was att ended by the MEC for agriculture, Ms Joy Matshoge, and a delegation of her De-partment, as well as more than 120 farmers from all over Limpopo.

According to Mr Willem van Jaarsveld, CEO of AgriLimpopo, the outcome was positive and constructive, with the agreement that all planning will be based on the National Deve-lopment Plan, the Limpopo Development Plan and the Integrated Development Plan of the various municipalities.

Among the issues raised were restitution claims which hampered agricultural produc-tion over the past fi fteen years, because land owners could not present their property for production credit.

The maintaining of market value is intense-ly connected with the security value of land.

Therefore it is important for the land owner and commercial banks to secure this value.

The perception of the two camps in the ANC about the role of the government in the econo-my obstructs growth in eff orts to develop agri-culture’s economy on a sound base.

The production among black farmers has only increased by one percent over the past twenty years. More land has not contributed to increased production.

The group also discussed the tendency to in-crease lawmaking on top of the already limit-ing laws like the Labour Act, which interfere with agricultural growth.

During the meeting the Land Claims Commis-sioner, Mr Mapotho, requested land owners to contact him on any outstanding land claims. He promised to remove all claims rom the Go-vernment Gazett e that are not in the fi nal stage of completion f. This will only be applicable to Limpopo and not the other provinces.

Van Jaarsveld reiterated that the workshop led to a valuable bond between AgriLimpopo and the Department of Agriculture, which will result in proper decision making to the benefi t of all parties involved.

Sien is glo.

Ilze Czubora How about a fence around the park near Circle drive? Washing taxis and leaving

rubbish everywhere, that too pollutes the water. And publicly bathing themselves as well, and using the pond as a toilet.

• The GTM has erected a concrete fence at great cost on the banks of the Letaba river in Tzaneen. Do you think it will keep people out and prevent pollution?- Secondly, informal traders, especially hairdressers under gazebos, have occupied parts of the narrow pavement. This is creating a dangerous traffi c situation for vehicles (taxis or buses, of which there are plenty) that may have to swerve. This could endanger people’s lives. Should traders be allowed on this narrow pavement?

The days of the illegal trading by the “bush” me-chanics operating on the Letaba River’s wall in Claude Wheatley Street, Tzaneen, are numbered. The same sentiments also apply to the “sango-ma”, who has inhabited a piece of land in the same area (photo right). This is the result of the current erection of a R1 mil-lion concrete security fence alongside the route. The construction of the fence started earlier last month and will extend from the bridge in Claude Wheatley Street to the sewer pump station next to the big new shed type of building on the cor-ner of Claude Wheatley and XXXXXXX.According to the Greater Tzaneen Municipali-ty’s assistant communications offi cer, Ms Vutivi Makhubele, the main aim of the security fence is to keep the illegal motor mechanics away from the river. The GTM is also planning to relocate

the “sangoma” to a place where he can live with-out occupying land illegally.Makhubele said that, “the mechanics will not op-erate anywhere near the fence, as the purpose of the fence is to control them from gaining access to the area. They have been operating without permits. Those who wish to run any operation will be advised to follow proper procedures to get trading authorization”.Makhubele added that the GTM have not yet secured a place to move the mechanics and the sangoma to, but confi rmed that they are busy planning for their relocation.Quality Plant Hire has been given an esti-mated budget of R1million by the GTM to erect the concrete fence.

A popular resident of Tzaneen — wide-ly liked for his open and friendly per-sonality — passed on after his health started to deteri-orate rather badly last week. The late Mr Alan Troskie (83) was taken up in the MediClinic Tzaneen, where he died on Monday af-ternoon.

He farmed in Agatha in earlier days, but retired and moved to town. He will buried from the DR Church (NG Kerk) Wolkberg at 11:00 today (Fri-day).

Alan Troskie leaves his wife, Lina, daughter Lin-da, sons Johan and Hennie, seven grand children and three great grand children.• Read the tribute in the letters column on page 6.

Alan Troskie Verkeerde naam

Police o cer shotA Ritavi police offi cer, Lt Yezindaba Meshack Skhathi (54), was shot dead early on Sunday morning at Petanenge, Ritavi. Skhathi and Const Carrol Machaba (35) were busy resolving a confl ict at Mabuza Tavern. It is alleged that two suspects, one armed with a rifl e, appeared from the nearby bushes. The one carrying a rifl e started shooting at the two offi cers. Lt Skhati was shot and she died on the scene, while Const Machaba was unharmed. The suspects fl ed the scene with the two police offi cers’ pistols. A task team has been formed by the Hawks to intensify a search for the suspects.

Provincial Police Commissioner Lt Genl Fannie Masemola said that “any att ack on and killing of police offi cers will not be tolerated”. “No stone will be left un-turned in our eff orts to establish who was involved and they will be brought to book”, added Masemola. Senior SAPS members visited the grieving family to off er their condolences. Residents with any lead on the suspects’ whereabouts are urged to anonymously inform Col Mabotja on 071 351 7198 or their nearest police station.

Truck drivers bewareTzaneen’s SAPS warns heavy vehicle drivers to refrain from abusing the Magoebaskloof R71 route between Polokwane and Tzaneen. This comes after four heavy truck accidents occurred on this road over the past three weeks. At least one person sustained serious injuries. These accidents happened a month

after Limpopo’s Department of Roads and Transport stated that they had monitored the traffi c fl ow on this route and that they were happy that it was not a problem.

There are huge traffi c signs clearly warning heavy vehicles not to use the road, but no law enforcing regarding this is being executed (by the Department’s own admission). What is understood is that the truck drivers intentionally disobey the traffi c rules while the Department fails to motivate (order) traffi c offi cers to enforce the law.

Tzaneen Police spokesman Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe said that investigations into all accidents are underway.

Motorists nabbedOver the past week Haenertsburg police nabbed 36 motorists for speeding and six others for Liquor Act off ences.

Unlawfulness curbedIn what seemed to be a busy week for criminals in Bolobedu, police reportedly held 64 people for their criminal dealings. Police apprehended eighteen people in connection with rape, assault, failure to comply with a maintenance order, malicious damage to property, housebreaking and theft. In a separate incident 37 people suspected of robbery, illegal gambling, traffi c off ences and drinking in public were arrested. Elsewhere in the area nine people were caught in possession of dagga and in connection with child neglect and illegal trading.

Trespassers caughtPolice in Modjadjiskloof caught twenty suspects for their involvement in illegal gambling, possession of dagga, off ences of the Liquor Act and traffi c off ences.

Residents in N’wamitwa are said to be up in arms over the escalating number of new liquor traders in the area and they reportedly want their headmen to stop accepting further liquor licences.

Headmen, as indunas and chiefs, are said to play a signi cant role in the establishment of liquor outlets in rural areas. Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism’s Mr Buckles Napo, said that the Department has no authority to grant a licence to any trader without permission from their “indunas”. Most of the traders situated closer to schools, churches and crèches were issued with licences before the enactment of the Liquor Act 27 of 1989, and their

applications were advertised in the Government Gazette to allow an objection within thirty days, said Napo.

He further said that licensees who trade close to schools were urged to comply with their licence conditions and failure will result in suspension of licenses. Department of Social Development spokesperson Adele van der Linde said “we encourage communities to object to the establishment of liquor outlets close to schools, crèches and churches”.

“This is the only power residents have as far as their rights are concerned,” added Van de Linde.

A preliminary report regarding an incident which occurred on 29 May, when a farm worker was found dead at Westfalia was released on Monday. The incident reportedly happened after 36 farm labourers were transported from their work place on a water tanker. One person was declared dead on the scene, one person’s leg had to be amputated below the knee, some were hospitalized with critical injuries and some had to undergo counseling.

According to statements by witnesses and the employer, the driver was under the in uence of alcohol and was driving over the speed limit. OHS (occupational health safety) inspector Carol Mthethwa

said that “the water tanker is not a suitable form of transport to carry farm workers and it appears that the guidelines were not followed”.

“Farmers need to ensure that they demarcate their routes with signs indicating the acceptable speed limits. On remedial actions, Mthethwa said, the department has introduced a Roving Safety Representative (RSR) project with its aim to assist farmers to make their environments safe. Farmers must encourage their employees to participate in this initiative to ensure that safety measures are exercised”, said Mthethwa.

Our Opinion

Money wastedTzaneen’s ratepayers now have to cough up up more or less R1 million for a concrete secu-rity fence on the southern bank of the Letaba River, to prevent people (like “bush” mechan-ics) from polluting the sensitive river.

This expenditure is nothing less than a waste of money. If the Greater Tzaneen Mu-nicipality had showed willingness to com-bat the illegal activities on the river bank they could have used the available mecha-nisms, such as their own traffi c offi cers or the SAPS, to enforce obedience to the laws of the land and the by-laws of the council.

The lack of timeous action against illegal activities in Tzaneen is a huge problem. Informal traders (hawkers) have been and are still allowed to occupy space where and when and how they like. Traffi c rules are challenged by motorists in an ongoing way, without a pro-active plan to discipline inconsiderate and reckless drivers.

Health inspectors seem to turn a blind eye to the atrocious neglect of hygiene in the streets, where food is prepared in the open and even slaughtering of chickens is allowed. Does Tzaneen still have building inspectors?

Will we wait for an outbreak of gastric fever or something even more deadly and then spend money to save lives? Are we go-ing to wait for a building to collapse, kill-ing people, and then wake up to the lack of building inspections?

Prevention is bett er than cure. Not in Tza-neen though!

Sincere thanksCheryl Eberhard writes: A very special and sincere thanks to all who have been assist-ing me with groceries, medical costs, vehicle maintenance and petrol, house repairs that I am unable to do myself and all other as-

sistance that I have received. Your kindness is greatly appreciated at this time. Words cannot express my true gratitude to you all.

Tribute to Alan TroskieRon Reiners writes: It pleased God to take Alan from this wicked sinful world on Mon-day 30 June 2014 at 16:55 at the age of 83. His family and friends mourn his loss.

Pa Alan was more than a father-in-law to me. He was more of a father and accepted me as his son. I will always be grateful to him for the many hours he spent with me trying to teach me how to farm avocado’s and how to be fi nancially astute. His suc-cess in this venture may or may not have been to his liking because often we had our diff erences.

I will remember him with great fondness especially for his humour and one particu-lar incident. I had grown a beard and he then started to introduce me to others as his father-in-law.

In my eyes he was a great man and I loved

him as a father. I know for a fact that He is with God at this time looking down upon us a smiling Alan.

Dad, may you rest in peace.Your son-in-law Ron.

Dra as-

Totaal oorboord man, sê ek jou! Die mense is mos nou glad nie lekker nie, after all, dis ‘n dier! Ja, dis so maklik.

Why do we fear death? Death is just a passing on from one season to the next. God only lends us our loved ones for a period of time, to carry out the plans He has for us all.

It has been said that we should actually reverse our emotions and be sad when someone is born for they are born into a world of sin and rejoice when someone dies because then they are released from this sinful world. Not an easy concept to imagine.

I believe that it is not actually death that we fear but the fear of the unknown. How will we cope with the loss and many times how will we man-age to survive, especially if the person who passed away was the bread winner. Natural death seems much easier to handle for it was perhaps expected, but untimely death causes many to question why and yes, even to question God.

What we need to believe is that God is always with us, He told us not to fear. If we truly believe in His power then He will give us the coping mechanisms to see us through all times of trial and tribulations. This amazing God we serve has the power to heal us both bodily and spiritually. Trust in Him.

Jesus took the sting out of death when He died on the cross for us. He opened the way to reconcilia-tion with His Father. Sin and doubt is what makes us fear. If we truly confess our sins and believe God has forgiven us then we need not fear.

Blessings.

At a time when most young people are en-couraged to dig into the fi elds of science, engineering, technology and accounting to secure some pleasurable form of living, Ms Refi lwe Maloba, who recently won the Mo-pani District’s Young Aspirant Farmer of the Year award, found her niche in farming.

The twenty-nine-year-old farmer owns a poultry concern called Tia Farming and Nursery in Deer Park outside Tza-neen. The farm currently produces 50 000 chickens per year.

We recently sat with the young farmer — who, with her progress and success in this enterprise, is truly an inspira-tion — for a short interview about her career in farming.

“To me farming was a calling,” said Maloba, who ex-plained that having grown up in Seshego, a township outside Polokwane, and with nobody else in her family interested in farming, her fi rst exposure to farming was only through growing fl owers and plants in her family garden.

When the Department of Rural Development off ered

young people land for ag-riculture through its Land Redistribution Programme (LRAD), Maloba could not resist the urge to apply.

Granted the land in July 2009, she immediately dived into plant-grow-ing and produced litchis, mangos, orchards and she also built a nursery. However, in the long run her plants were un-productive, she said.

“During the Fifa World Cup prepa-rations in 2010, Tia

won a contract to supply plants to the Polokwane Municipality,” she said, “but the farm was struck by a hailstorm in 2011 and I lost everything”.

“I, however, did not give up on my farm,” continued Malo-ba. In 2012, the young woman’s tenacity paid off when she tried her luck and tried it well in broiler farming.

Today, Maloba supplies her produce to Rainbow Chick-ens and says, “I’m happy about

the pro-

gress of my farm. Farming is business. As with any other business, it requires good management skills, persistence and diligence.”

Other than poultry, Tia Farming is also looking into aq-ua-culture, said Maloba, who explained that the farm has a natural dam with good resources for fi sh. It has been ap-proved for fi sh farming as well.

Although her interest in farming came through growing plants, Maloba says she does not consider returning to growing plants. “I love plants, but our farm is haunted by monkeys that constantly ate our plants when we grew them,” she said.

Interesting facts about Maloba and Tia Farming

• Maloba studied accounting at Unisa and graduated in 2007.

• She worked at Letsatsi in Polokwane for a while before venturing into farming.

• The twenty-nine-year-old is married and has a seven-year-old daughter, Tia, after whom she named her farm.

• Her mother is a nurse, her father retired from SA Brewer-ies and she is the eldest of five siblings.

• Apart from managing her farm, Maloba says she enjoys going to church.

• Tia Farming has seven employees, six of whom are under 35.

• Although as an aspiring farmer she received a lot of dis-couragement for her femininity and youthfulness, Maloba says she does not believe in female/male classifications. “It only takes determination. Anyone can enjoy success if they apply themselves to achieving it,” she said.

A young woman from Deerpark was named Mopani’s Young Aspirant Farmer of the Year two weeks ago. Joy Mojela paid the dynamic and successful young farmer a visit on her farm. She found a particularly well-kept farm where Ms Re-filwe Majoba nowadays produce 50 000 chickens per annum. She now also consid-ers expanding into fish farming, but this is not where this young entrepreneur’s ideas end. She still has a number of other ideas to

To be a cellular telephone (mobile) user in and around Tzaneen has become extremely frustrating. We asked the three network dis-tributors — MTN, Vodacom and Cell C — about two weeks ago about the problems in the area. Last week MTN gave their explana-

tion, as was published in the Bulletin. They indicated that the problems encoun-

tered in the Tzaneen area should be some-thing of the past. Sadly it isn’t, and we will ask them to perform some further investiga-tions.

Vodacom reacted to our enquiry on Wednesday. Their Senior Specialist: Communications and Social Media, Mr Ashleigh Dubbelman, reacted as follows:“It’s hugely frustrating when people

can’t make calls, send SMS or surf the internet. The simple fact is that as mo-bile data volumes continue to increase, we need to install new base stations to cope with the demand. Each site can only deal with a fi nite number of calls, emails etc. so we need more base sta-tions to deal with the load.“To this end we’ve spent over R30 bil-

lion on network investment in South Africa over the past six years, and have allocated R9 billion for the coming year alone. However, a major challenge we

face is gett ing permission for these new sites, and we often fi nd that opposition from a rela-tively small group can impact coverage for hundreds if not thousands of people.“On top of this in Tzaneen specifi cally, the

network has been aff ected by a number of network outages caused by the vandalism of our sites as well as several failures in the Telkom transmission network that we rely on to connect our base stations to our core net-work. The last Telkom failure aff ected thirty of our sites in the area for around six hours. The good news is that we are busy putt ing

in our own transmission which will make us less vulnerable to these types of outages. We hope to have completed this project by the end of the year. “We are also in the process of upgrading

fourteen of our existing sites to include 3G capability as well as erecting six brand new sites. This will increase the capacity on the network and should go a long way to im-proving network performance in Tzaneen. “Having said that, we want to hear from our

customers if they are experiencing network issues. They can reach us on 082 111, via our Face-book page or on Twitt er @Voda-com111,” he said.• We are still waiting for Cell C’s response.

Koos & Riekie Smit Makelaars, wat lank bekend was as versekeringsmakelaars, is geheraktiveer.

Tzaneen’s prestige and very popular up-market residen-tial security estate with a magnifi cent view over the dam and the majestic mountains in the area is indeed back in business, so to speak, after uncertainty resulted from problems that the initial developer had experienced.

A LOVING HOME THAT REFLECTS SOUTH AFRICAN DIVERSITYConsider adoption as an option.

South Africa is a country with 11 offi cial languages, hundreds of cultural groups and numerous recognised religions. Every day, families everywhere are mixing up these ingredients to create this multi-wonderful nation that we know and love. If you are thinking of adoption, have you considered adopting a child from a different race or culture? Children are just children, no matter their biological background, and all children need a loving home.

Start your journey today by learning the facts with Add-option, South Africa’s fi rst national adoption resource centre.

“There is a big difference between the idea of cross-cultural adoption, and actually taking a little boy or girl into your home. We didn’t adopt an idea, we adopted Jenna! And from the fi rst moment she has been the love of our lives, exactly the same as a proud mom and dad would reach out for their biological baby at the hospital. The only difference is that she wasn’t born from our womb, but from our hearts.”

Seven Stanford Lake College pupils and three staff members enjoyed a fantastic Cross Country mountain biking race in Makhado at the Kremetart Classic. It was an extremely technical course — which has been hailed as world class — which seemed to bring out the best in the team. Despite a few falls and spills, all the riders represented SLC brilliantly, managing to snag five podium spots out of the seven riders. Seen in the photo are Bryce Reed, Matthew Wilkinson, Benno Prinsloo, Lachlan Truesdale, Kirsten Eastes, Shara

Pogrund and Anke Vaughn.

prised they’re going to be when you kill them.” — William Clayton

Giyani All Stars look set to keep the Greater Giyani Mayoral Tournament’s trophy at home after beating Makhuva Man United 4-0 on Saturday to make it through to the tournament’s nals, which are scheduled for tomorrow.

The match that was played at Giyani stadium, has seen All Stars putting up an impressive performance. They have won the tournament for the past four years in succession. The tournament with a price tag of R15 000 for the rst position and R10 000 for the

second position, consists of various teams from the Greater Giyani Municipality’s thirty wards.

Giyani All Stars comprised of players from Ward 11 in the townships, while the rest of the teams are from villages around Giyani. Asked about the prospects of winning the tournament for the fth time, the captain of All Stars, Oska Mathebula, said his team was planning to keep the trophy.

The main aim of the tournament is to contribute towards the development of sport in the area.

Tussen Letsitele se lemoenboorde sweef ‘n paar groot rugbygeeste rond.
