He wants us to learn how to “reason in faith” by taking the truths that he has revealed to us and applying them to our own philosophy of life and to the decisions we face each day. But can human reason and logic alone be enough to believe that simple bread and wine can be transformed into the body and blood of Christ? More so, to think that the consecrated host remains forever transformed into Christ, even if it is sitting unattended in a tabernacle or is placed in a monstrance for adoration. Reason and logic without faith cannot help us to grow into communion with God. Faith needs to be strengthened by God’s loving presence in our lives. So we have Eucharistic miracles, which for millions of Catholics is the place when human logic and revealed truth merge to increase our faith. In 700 AD, there was a priest in Lanciano, Italy, who was struggling with his faith in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. One morning, while celebrating Mass, he was astonished to see the host change into real flesh and the wine into real blood. His initial shock gave way to joy as he proclaimed to those near him: “Behold the flesh and the blood of our most beloved Christ!” After thorough investigation by scientists, it was concluded that the flesh and blood belong to human species. Even though this miracle happened 13 centuries ago, both the flesh and blood remain intact and are on display in the Church of St Francis in Lanciano. There are other examples of Eucharistic miracles in Boslena and Ovieto in Italy. These miracles exist to spur us on and to help convince us that the Eucharist really is Jesus feeding us and helping us to live holy and pleasing lives. 24 AUGUST 2014 LAY APOSTOLATE SUNDAY

To be a Christ-centred family that loves and

serves one another with joy and humility

Human Reason, Logic and the Blessed Sacrament

Human reason and logic are wonderful gifts from God. He wants us to learn how to “reason in faith” by taking the

truths that he has revealed to us and applying them to our own philosophy of life and to the decisions we face each

day.

But can human reason and logic alone be enough to believe that simple bread and wine can be transformed into

the body and blood of Christ? More so, to think that the consecrated host remains forever transformed into Christ,

even if it is sitting unattended in a tabernacle or is placed in a monstrance for adoration.

Reason and logic without faith cannot help us to grow into communion with God. Faith needs to be strengthened

by God’s loving presence in our lives. So we have Eucharistic miracles, which for millions of Catholics is the place

when human logic and revealed truth merge to increase our faith.

In 700 AD, there was a priest in Lanciano, Italy, who was struggling with his faith in the Real Presence of Christ in

the Eucharist. One morning, while celebrating Mass, he was astonished to see the host change into real flesh and

the wine into real blood. His initial shock gave way to joy as he proclaimed to those near him: “Behold the flesh

and the blood of our most beloved Christ!”

After thorough investigation by scientists, it was concluded that the flesh and blood belong to human species. Even

though this miracle happened 13 centuries ago, both the flesh and blood remain intact and are on display in the

Church of St Francis in Lanciano. There are other examples of Eucharistic miracles in Boslena and Ovieto in Italy.

These miracles exist to spur us on and to help convince us that the Eucharist really is Jesus feeding us and

helping us to live holy and pleasing lives.

When we go to the Adoration Room we are invited to “come and see” and believe that Jesus our Lord and Saviour

is truly present in the Blessed Sacrament.

- REV FR J J FENELON -

NCC REFLECTION

The sacred synod also earnestly and especially urges all the Christian faithful, to learn by frequent reading of the

divine Scriptures the "excellent knowledge of Jesus Christ" (Phil. 3:8). "For ignorance of the Scriptures is

ignorance of Christ."(St. Jerome) Therefore, they should gladly put themselves in touch with the sacred text itself,

whether it be through the liturgy, rich in the divine word, or through devotional reading, or through instructions

suitable for the purpose and other aids which, in our time, with approval and active support of the shepherds of

the Church, are commendably spread everywhere. And let them remember that prayer should accompany

the reading of Sacred Scripture, so that God and man may talk together; for "we speak to Him when we pray;

we hear Him when we read the divine saying." (St. Ambrose)
