2014 FIVB Women's World Championship Qualification
St. Kitts/Nevis remains unbeaten by defeating Bermuda
Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 28th
2012 – Team St. Kitts/
Nevis cruised to straight sets victories (25- 15; 25 17
and 25 -21) over Bermuda in match number 5 of
2014 FIVB world championship qualification women
Round I Group D.
Team St. Kitts/Nevis was hardly challenged during
the first two sets but the third was distinctly
different. Bermuda enjoyed brief early leads (4-3 and
7-6) but Team St. Kitts Nevis roared back and pushed
the game it 24 -14. It was then that Bermuda gave St. Kitts/Nevis a scare by reeling off a 7-0 run
but St. Kitts/Nevis promptly took the required point
St. Kitts Nevis remained undefeated and confirmed a berth in the finals to play for the gold
medal. The win did not come as a surprise to Coach Steadroy Collins. “As I said before I am
pretty confident that my girls will do well as long as they stick to the game plan. They had
execution all around with only a few lapses in the third set,” he said.
Captain Antoinette Henry who was nursing a slight injury at the end felt too that St. Kitts Nevis
played a great game. “We started slowly as usual and picked up momentum going right through
the three sets. It was only when we got to match point in the third set that we lost mental
focus”, she admitted.
Bermuda Coach Juanita Blee was satisfied despite the loss. “I think St. Kitts/Nevis and Anguilla
deserve to go to the finals as they were the better teams here. However I am proud of the way
the young girls played, they made some errors but they did not allow those errors to discourage
them. We will now look forward to the third place play off and hope to win it as a great
motivation for the young ladies, she concluded.
Shanicia Dyer of St. Kitts /Nevis had another superb performance with 11 spikes, 8 blocks and 2
service winners to end with a grand total of 21 points. Brenda Allen- Endinborough had 13
points and Captain Henry and Andrea Liburd contributed 11 each to give a concerted team
effort.
For Bermuda only their captain Victoria Stevenson had a double digit score of 10 points.
Anguilla to meet St. Kitts/Nevis in Finals
Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 28th
2012 – Team
Anguilla qualified to play for the top position
when they defeated St. Maarten in straight t sets
(26- 24; 25 17 and 25 -21) in the final preliminary
game of the 2014 FIVB world championship
qualification women Round I Group D.
Team St. Maarten proved to be somewhat of a
bother to the Anguillans however as the first set
was the closest of the 18 played so far. They
gave another good effort in the second set but the more experienced opponents polished
them off. By that time there was no gas left in the tank hence there was not much of an effort
in the third set.
Winning Coach Jason Liburd was happy that they achieved another of their several objectives
and that is to play for the gold medal but admitted that St. Marten proved quite nagging at
times. “Once again passing was our main problem and we have to make that adjustment if we
are to be successful going forward. Nevertheless I don’t think that we have played our best yet
we were just a little too complacent today,” he reported.
Stand in captain of the Anguilla team Ludiane Leveret- Richardson concurred with the coach.
“We need to make some adjustments in the way we start and position ourselves when the ball
is in the air. Apart from that we came here to play volleyball and we aim to win the
tournament”, she intimated.
Losing Coach, Cleophas Arrindell, watch his team improve over the course of the competition.
“They are improving slowly maybe too slowly but we can see incremental improvement. We
are not quite there yet but I am hoping that we can put it together by tonight and still salvage a
third place,” he said.
Captain Lastasha Mills took her third straight loss in good stride. “All I will tell my girls is that we
have nothing to lose so let’s go out there and give it our best shot,” she chimed.
Ludiane Leveret Richardson was the lead scorer with 19 points which included 14 spikes. Susan
Webster posted 15 points in support.
For the losing side Captain Lathasha Mills led with 9 points while young Chesley Augustine had
8.
Bermuda and St. Maarten will determine the third place position
Bermuda grabs third place over St. Maarten
Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 28th
, 2012 – Victory in
three straight sets(25-20, 25 -8 and 25-20) gave
Bermuda third place over St. Maarten in the play off
stage of the 2014 FIVB world championship
qualification women Round I Group D.
Coach Blee of Bermuda was extremely satisfied with
the outcome. This victory means a great deal to the
programme for the young girls to come and get
some experience. During the game we got into a
groove and played well as a unit.
Victoria Stevenson captain of team Bermuda kept smiling throughout the interview. We won,
we won she exclaimed!
Coach Arrindell concluded that it was the inexperience of the squad that led to their demise.
“The truth of the matter is our senior players at home are not really serious about volleyball
and so we had to bring junior players to this tournament. So it was a case where inexperience
got the better of us. However if we were able to clean up the unforced errors and better
communication we could have done better he said.
Captain Latasha Mills was near to tears as she felt that it was not their best effort. “ We have to
take the game more seriously and put in the real work on the training ground before coming to
these tournaments”, she said.
Briana Scott of Bermuda and Captain Lathasha Mills of St. Maarten both had 10 points to be
the top scorers of the game
Bermuda 3rd
place qualifies them for the second round of the FIVB world championship
qualification but they will miss out on the ECVA competition as only the first two teams qualify.
St. Kitts/Nevis wins world championship qualification women
Group D
Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 28th
, 2012- Team St.
Kitts/Nevis kept a perfect record throughout the entire
2014 FIVB world championship qualification women
Round I Group D when they disposed of Anguilla 3-0
(25-11; 25- 18 and 25 -11) in the finals to top the
group.
Coach Steadroy Collins summarized that it was a total
team effort that worked in his favour. “The girls really
came out pumped and ready for the task tonight and
all departments clicked at the right time. The setter
was on her game, Shani (Dyer) and Brenda (Allen) were dominant at the net and Antoinette (Henry) did
a lot of very good passing,“ he said.
The statistics for the St. Kitts/Nevis team backed up his claim as Dyer had 15 points consisting of 9 spikes
and 6 service points while Brenda Allen -Edinborough had 14 spikes and 2 blocks for a total of 16 points.
Captain Antoinette Henry pointed to their overall approach to the group. "From the onset we
determined to win so much so that winning it now feels like an anticlimax. I cannot complain about a
slow start as we had a really good warm up and kept the momentum throughout,," she said.
Losing Coach Jason Liburd accepted the defeat graciously. “I must admit that St. Kitts/Nevis was the
better team tonight. I don’t want to make excuses but we were a bit undermanned losing our captain
Khalidah Banks who had to return home urgently. Given a different time with all conditions being equal
it would have being a better game but we just weren’t good enough to beat St. Kitts tonight,” he
reported.
Stand in captain Ludiane Leveret - Richardson had 10 points as the top scorer for the second place team.
She told the press that she and her teammates were satisfied even though they had lost. “We really felt
that we poured in a great effort but just did not manage to pull it off. We have noted the areas we need
to work on going forward particularly the passing and covering." she said.
When the team headed to the podium to collect their medals, Brenda Allen- Edinborough was
announced as the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
