Some days are more special than oth-
ers. Birthdays of grandchildren, spouses,
and even our own are times when we get
our family together and celebrate. Anni-
versaries are special too, when we re-
member them. It is even a special day for
me when I remember what I came into a
room for, or why I opened the refrigera-
tor. I find myself having to write a little
note about what TV show I watched the night before in case
my wife wants to discuss plot lines from something on PBS
that I slept through. August the 7th is a special day in the
British Commonwealth of Nations. The tiny print on my
Corgis Calendar in my office says that it is Bank Holiday,
Civic Holiday, and Picnic Day in Great Britain, Canada, Aus-
tralia, New Zealand, and Prince George Island. People in
the British Commonwealth get a day off. In the US we have
a three day weekend just about every month. I am pretty sure
that Jimmy Hoffa negotiated this while in charge of the
Teamsters Union. (Little SIR continued on page 2)
Little SIR Mike
The other day a blonde came up
to me and asked how to spell
"orange". When I told her and she
got quite angry. "Not the fruit," she
shouted, "the color"!
If you missed last month's lunch-
eon you missed quite an experi-
ence. If you were there you know
what I mean. In my spare time I often wonder just
what a sardine must think just as they stuff it in those
small cans. Now I know. Mea culpa, when I was asked
if it would be alright to move the luncheon into the
smaller room for one month I agreed. I didn't realize
that there would only be one buffet line and it would
take a half hour to get everybody served.
I gave you all an hour the next day to complain about
it. Unfortunately, the memo was never sent so the
complaining (Big SIR continued on page 2)
Big SIR Gary
(Little SIR continued from page 1) Not so in the Common-
wealth. Except for a few days off for religious holidays like
Christmas and Easter, the Brits are busy working. For them,
August 7th marks the end of summer. Kids go back to
school the next day but on the 7th they party.
This made me think that while I have to continually check
to see if I am “zipped up” growing older does have some
perks. For most SIRs every day is August 7th. We are so
lucky to have “Friends for Life” that we can golf, bowl, play
cards, throw shoes, and who will not laugh when I miss an-
other 3-foot putt. (At least not to my face) I can’t think of a
better group of guys to spend time with. I think as SIRs we
have a duty to spread the joy to as many potential roosters
as we can. The RAMP committee has done some things to
increase membership. It stands to reason that once a person
hears about what we have to offer they will be eager to join
the barnyard. So, the task becomes getting the word out.
And, it’s here that all SIRS can help. We have some RAMP
projects coming on board: Presentations at Senior Centers,
Our Race day at the Fresno Fair, and the Whitmer Bench at
Riverside golf course will get the message out of what we
are and what we do. Yet, the real recruiter is each one of us.
This month we will be printing extra copies of the Chanti-
cleer. Take a few copies home from the luncheon with you.
You can send them to a friend, neighbor, or drop them off at
a strategic location where people congregate. If you go to
church, ask the pastor/priest for a little pulpit time and hand
out a Chanticleer along with a homely. You might just get a
new friend and a free lunch.
Thank you again for filling out the Veteran’s Survey. If you
have not completed a Survey please do so. We need to make
sure we have a data base to use for Veteran’s Day in No-
vember as well as any (Little SIR continued on page 3)

Each month when we induct new mem-bers we will ask them to give us a little info about themselves and we will put that in the Chanticleer along with their picture. In a group with over 200 mem-bers it can be easy to get lost in the shuf-fle. So please, get to know the newest members, introduce yourselves to them at the next luncheon and help get them involved. Let them know that we con-sider it a privilege that they have chosen to spend some time with us.
(Big SIR continued from page 1) time passed quietly
and now it's too late. But think of it this way, many of
you were wondering what it must be like to live in a
submarine, and now you know. This month it is back to
the palacial big room.
This month's big news is the installation of the Jim
Whitmer bench at Riverside Golf Course. It is a spectac-
ular tribute to Jim and Branch 159. You can see a photo
of it in this edition of the Chanticleer. The bench was
paid entirely from the donations of our members. Grati-
tude should be given to Ron Wilson, who championed
the idea, to Perry Huffman who wrote the inscription,
and to Del Kerns who installed the plaque. A special
thanks goes to Alan Baxter, whose generous donation
put us over the top. Be sure to see it in person when you
get the chance. I am sure I am leaving out many of you
who deserve acclimation for the project, if so, I apolo-
gize.
Thanks to Rich Colby for hosting Date Night at Lin's
Fusion the Wednesday after the luncheon. It was good
to see some new faces there and even some who came
stag. We call it Date NIght, but as with all our functions,
you can bring your lady friends or come alone. Next
month don't miss out.
Each month I get a form from our Membership Chair
John Crawford that lets me know how our branch is
doing. I am proud to say that our membership is up a
little, figuring in several new members who have not yet
been inducted because they have not been able to get to
a luncheon. However, half way through the year, we are
at 9 percent of our goal for guests. That's right, 9,-
rather pathetic. With (Big SIR continued on page 3)
Attention Ladies, if you are not getting the SIR-159 Chanti-
cleer and would like your own email copy please send your

Roger Deal, BEC Member
(Little SIR continued from page 2) future events. A copy is
included in the Chanticleer and forms will be available at
the luncheon.
This month’s guest speaker is Mr. Richard Mann. Richard
is the head Librarian for Fresno County specializing in
“Senior Services” and heads up the Veteran’s Resource
Center. His presentation will focus on what services and
resources the County Library has for seniors. Do you have
a Library Card? If not, Richard will get one for you. Pron-
to. On the Spot!
Finally, the waters are calming a bit so now we can plan on
taking our Canoe Trip on the San Joaquin River on Satur-
day, September 16th. Space is limited so contact Terry Byr-
ne to reserve a spot. I promise that there will be no water
balloon fights. Maybe.
SIR Poker Corner
Our next SIRs poker game is Tuesday, August 1. The Texas
holdem poker tournament will be held at the home of Michael
Levine. The game begins at noon. We will be following a
different tournament structure one that conforms to casino
rules. The buy in is $20 with $5 given to the host for lunch.
For more information call or text Michael at 559-250-
4137. The address of the game is 877 East Woodhaven Lane,
Fresno 93720. We are looking for people to host September
and October games.
Attendance Report
In July, 2017, SIR Branch #159 had 199 active members of
which 128 were in attendance at Pardini’s for the luncheon
on the 13th. This represents 65% of the active membership.
Of the 70 members absent, 35 were excused. Members are
expected to attend the monthly meeting or to notify the At-
tendance Chairman when the wish to be excused. Three con-
secutive unexcused absences or six unexcused absences in a
twelve month period constitutes a jeopardy to membership.
If you are unable to attend a future meeting, PLEASE call
447-5388 or send an email to [email protected] When
you call or email please include your NAME and BADGE
NUMBER
Remember our lunch count depends on YOU responding to
(Big SIR continued from page 2)normal attrition, if
this rate were to continue, we would be unable to
sustain ourselves as a branch.
To put it into perspective, one SIR branch has had
139 guests in the last eighteen months. This is al-
most eight guests per month. Adjusting for the size
of the branches, they are bringing more than twice
the guests to their lunches. Please, bring a guest
lunch this month, it is our lifeblood. You all have a
friend, neighbor or relative who would like a free
lunch. If you have no friends, I'm sure you can
schedule a session with Stanley Littleworth, our
house shrink- he's done wonders for me. Wait, those
purple men are coming to get me again). Let's see
you get out there and bring someone. There are
branches that will be shutting down because of this
and we shouldn't be one of them. We are strong
now, but ... well you know.
Little Sir Mike has preparred a survey. Its purpose
is to find our what the Branch Executive Committee
can do in the way of luncheons, activities, or what-
ever, to better serve you and make your SIR experi-
ence more enjoyable. Please think about these things
and, when you get the survey, take a few minutes
and thoughtfully fill it out. We appreciate your input
at any time.
I am going to cut this short. I see that it is almost
3:00 PM and this is cutting into my nap time. I think
I'll pour a glass of warm milk, start "The Houswives
of Atlanta" on the DVD and catch some zzzs.
See you all in August.
Nine Hole Golf:
Come out every Wednesday! Meet us at Airways Golf
Course to play nine (or more) holes of golf with your
SIR pals. We tee off at 10am. We do the front nine by
noon. Ride or walk, your choice. Play the back nine as
well if you like. Great guys, great times, and fresh air
outside. See ya there, boys!

The History Roundtable
There has been a lot of talk of “Fake
News” lately. With this in mind, and
also the fact that July contains Inde-
pendence Day, the History
Roundtable had a discussion of
one of the biggest “fake news”
stories in American History. It
seems that founding father Ben
Franklin found the British to be
rather reluctant in negotiations
following the victory at York-
town in 1782 to grant our new
nation concessions at the peace
conference in Paris. Franklin had
achieved fame as a newspaper
publisher and knew well the pow-
er of the press. He concocted a
totally fake news story how the
British were paying the Indians
for the scalps of slaughtered men,
women, and children on the fron-
tier. He leaked the story to the
British press who published it
throughout Great Britain. The
British public rose up in arms
against their own government
who quickly met American de-
mands to avoid any more back-
lash from home. You can read
more about it by going to https://

be Tuesday, August 15th at 11:00
Rooster of the Month Duke Marshall
with Big SIR Gary
AM at the Yosemite Falls Café on Blackstone just north
of Shaw Avenue. Join us for a discussion on who was a
better President: Andrew Jackson or Theodore Roosevelt.
How would each one of them handle some of the pressing
issues of today?
Men Fall For This Scam 90% Of The Time
A new scam targeting older men:
Women often receive warnings about pro-
tecting themselves at the mall and in
dark parking lots, etc. This is the first warn-
ing I have seen for men. I wanted to pass it
on in case you haven’t heard about it.
A ‘heads up’ for those men who may be regular customers
at Lowe’s, Home Depot, Costco, or even Wal-Mart. This
one caught me totally by surprise.
Over the last month, I became a victim of a clever scam
while out shopping. Simply going out to get supplies has
turned out to be quite traumatic. Don’t be naive enough to
think it couldn’t happen to you or your friends.
Here’s how the scam works:
Two nice looking, college-age girls will come over to your
car or truck as you are packing your purchases into your
vehicle. They both start wiping your windshield with a rag
and Windex, with their breasts almost falling out of their
skimpy T-shirts. (It’s impossible not to look.) When you
thank them and offer them a tip, they say ‘No’ but instead,
ask for a ride to McDonald’s.
You agree, and they climb into the vehicle. On the way,
they start undressing. Then one of them starts crawling all
The children in 2nd Grade began to identify the Life-
saver flavors by their color:
Red....................Cherry
Yellow................Lemon
Green..................Lime
Ornge .......Orange
Finally, the teacher gave them all HONEY lifesavers. None of
the children could identify the taste. The teacher said, 'I will
give you all a clue. It's what your mother may sometimes call
your father.' One little girl looked up in horror, spit her lifesaver
out and yelled, "Oh my God! They're ass-holes!" The teacher
had to leave the room!
Sunshine Committee:
As we sweat it out together, things seem OK for the
Branch. We are told that SIR Hank Gomar has gone to live
with family out of town. We trust that he will be settled
and doing fine at publication time. (I know, …we miss that
guy.)
Sir Mike Kilijian reports that he has returned home and
is mending just fine after a recent surgery, and is doing
well. Good news!
Word has reached our ear, however, that SIR Stanley Lit-
tleworth is in hospital. The cause is uncertain. The commit-
tee could not reach Carole for details by press time,
but your concerns and support were conveyed by message.
Update next month.
Till then, keep strutting, fellow roosters, and stay well in
the barnyard!
Charlie Barrett Sunshine
over you, while the other one steals your wallet. I had
my wallet stolen May 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th,
again on the 17th, 20th, 24th, and the 29th. Also June
1st, 4th, 8th, twice on the 16th &17th, and very likely
again this upcoming weekend.
So tell your friends to be careful. What a horrible way
to take advantage of us older men. Warn your friends to
be vigilant.
Wal-Mart has wallets on sale for $2.99 each. I found
even cheaper ones for $.99 at the Dollar Store and
bought them out in three of their stores. Also, you never
get to eat at McDonald’s. I’ve already lost 11 pounds
just running back and forth from Lowe’s to Home De-
pot, to Wal-Mart.
So please, send this on to all the older men that you
know and warn them to be on the lookout for this scam.
(The best times are just before lunch and around 4:30 in
the afternoon.)

Whitmer Bench Talk about a plan coming together... 7 weeks ago it
was just an idea and here it is completed. On the 15th hole
at Riverside Golf Course sits a beautiful memorial bench
for Jim Whitmer, founder of Monday golf, and a headline
for SIR Branch 159 for all the passing people to see.
Heading up the project was Ron Wilson with assistance in
plaque design by Perry Huffman, Rich Lewis in collecting
the money, and Dell Kerns in installation.
Also, must add Keith Berry and his team at Riverside
that donated the spot, the pad and the labor for the installa-
tion. Without your help, we could have been still swim-
ming around in red tape. Thanks guys! I hope you will
consider Jim's bench an asset for the golf course.
Finally, thanks to all the individual donors that jumped
in so quickly with generous donations. Hope you can take
a minute as you pass the 15th hole to sit on the bench and
ponder the fine men that have passed before. See follow-
ing picture of bench and plaque.
SIR Bowling to continue rolling
Today, July 28th, I was informed by the house man-
ager that that we would be able to fit into a slot at
Sierra Lanes on Tuesdays @ 1 pm starting the 5th of
September. This is the time slot and day that most of
you prefered. He has asked me to confirm this.
