Dear Friends,

Peace and all Good!

In today’s Gospel, Jesus continues to challenge us to follow the Law of Love. The Old Testament com-mandment—“an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth”—was actually meant to moderate retaliation and vengeance. For the times, it was a tremendous step forward in offering peace. But, Jesus forbids even this “proportionate” retaliation! He is not ask-ing us to be limp in the face of the adversary, but ra-ther to use the method of love and forgiveness to convert one’s enemies! In truth, eye-for-an-eye jus-tice does not challenge the wrongdoer to convert. As the U.S. bishops have said: “Violence breeds vio-lence!” It is rather unmerited love and forgiveness that can change people’s hearts! Can we follow this way of Christ? I have some wonderful news! After many months of interviews, we are officially hiring Mr. Kerey Quaid, the present “interim director”, as the full-time Music Director for Mission San Luis Rey Parish! Mr. Quaid is a fine musician and liturgist and well liked by all the choirs. In addition, we have also hired Ms. Emma Whitten as an assistant to Mr. Quaid. Em-ma will serve as the principal organist and will assist Kerey in musical duties for the Sunday Masses. Em-ma comes to us from the Diocese of Phoenix where she was the organist at the cathedral. She has re-ceived numerous awards in organ performance. Both Kerey and Emma are delightful and energetic musicians! With both of them at the helm, I know that our liturgy and music will only soar higher to greater honor and the glory of God! Welcome, Kerey and Emma! In closing, I wish to thank the Culture and Diversity Committee and the Pastoral Council for an absolutely amazing afternoon of “Celebrating Our Diversity” on last Sunday! Well over two hundred people came! Everyone was full of joy and excitement as we met parishioners of different cultures and backgrounds! Our presenters, Sr. Kathy and Sr. Michelle, could not stop saying how enriching the Convocation was! May we continue the good work done in our midst! Love,

GRIEF SUPPORT MINISTRY—GRIEF A HEALING JOURNEY

healing. A new group will start on Thursdays beginning Thursday, February 23, in Rm. #5 from 2:00-3:30 p.m. For more info. and registration, please call 760-757-3250 x 206.

LENTEN SOUP AND STUDY “The Last Words of Jesus”

Thursdays of Lent, March 9th, 16th, 23rd, and April 6th.

The final words of a dying person are precious to those left behind. When the time is short, one has a chance to speak only of the most im-portant things—love, for-giveness, and faith. That is why the Church has a long tra-dition of meditating on the last words of Jesus from the cross. Join Fr. Vince on four Thursdays of Lent for a spiritual reflection on these most precious words of the Lord as recorded in the Gospels. We will meet in St. Francis Hall at 6:00 p.m. for a deli-cious homemade soup and begin our study at 6:30 p.m. Mark your calendars now and plan to make this an im-portant part of your Lenten journey!

LENTEN “TAIZE PRAYER” Wednesdays of Lent at 7:00 p.m.

Old Mission Church

All are welcome to our beautiful Taize Prayer Service this coming Lent. Many ask what is Taize Prayer? Taize Prayer

is a style of prayer which comes to us from this little vil-lage of Taize, France. After World War II, Brother Roger founded a community in this little village to pray for rec-onciliation in the world. This prayer for reconciliation is clearly definitely needed right now in our own times. Through meditative and simple chants, we are brought into the presence of God. We add twinkling candles and hear the Word of God. Then, we venerate a special cross—a replica of the cross of Taize. Our prayer will be bilingual as well. Please come and be nourished by this beautiful and meditative kind of prayer on Wednesdays of Lent at 7:00 p.m. in the Old Mission Church.

P A R I S H L I B R A R Y N O T E S

Today we continue to explore our wonderful Catholic authors available for your reading enjoyment. Thomas Green, SJ, was the Spiritual Director of a seminary in the Philippines and authored several books on prayer and spirituality, of which we have six titles. Benedict Groeschel, CFR, was an American Franciscan Friar, re-treat master, author, psychologist, activist, television host and a prolific writer. We have several of his books, tapes and DVD’s. Scott W. Hahn is a convert from Pres-byterianism to become an American Roman Catholic lay theologian, contemporary author, professor, and Christian apologist; we have several of his books, DVD’s and CD’s. All of these authors are easy and enjoy-able reads and most titles are in our Catholic Authors Section-243.Today the Library will have a Book Sale from 8 a.m. - 12 noon. Get some good reading items for this Lenten season and beyond.

KNIGHT’S PANCAKE BREAKFAST The Knights of Columbus will be serving pancakes, eggs, sausages, coffee and orange juice on Sunday, Feb. 26, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in the St. Francis Hall. A plate is $5.00, donuts $1. Children under 10 free.

LENT FASTING AND ABSTINENCE Fasting (the eating of one main meal and two smaller meals with no in-between snacks) applies to those be-tween ages 21-59 who are in good health and would not be hampered in their work by fasting. The only days that are legislated by church law are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other days of Lent and all Fridays are encouraged but not obligated by law. Abstinence (the exclusion of meat for the entire day) includes anyone from age 7 and up to any age where the loss of meat for one day would not be harmful to one’s health. The days of full Abstinence are Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during Lent. Lent is a time for us to voluntarily choose to do pen-ance and mortification as an expression of gratitude to God for what Christ did for us through His Own Suffering and Death. It is an attempt to respond to the love that He so willingly gave to us.

In another passage from his Ser-mon on the Mount, Jesus con-tinues to turn his disciples’ way of thinking upside-down. One of the lessons for the Christian

steward in today’s Gospel is that if we have a chance to help someone in need, we should be generous and give more than is expected of us. Jesus went “the extra mile” for us. Can we be more like Jesus and “go the extra mile” for others?
