Fifth Sunday of Easter John 15:1-8

"If you remain in me and my

words remain in you, ask for

whatever you want and it will be

done for you." What a lovely

promise! Imagine how satisfying

it would be to ask for whatever we

wanted and then to see that wish

granted. Truly, it would be

difficult to think of anyone who

would not love to see a promise

like this fulfilled. But we know

Jesus isn't a genie in a magic lamp

sent to indulge every selfish

whim. So, what's the catch?

Well, as Jesus puts it in today's

Gospel, this promise is extended

to those who "remain" in him. He

uses the beautiful analogy of the

vine and the branches to explain

what this means. "A branch cannot

bear fruit on its own unless it

remains on the vine ... I am the

vine, you are the branches." The

idea here is that we are to be

connected to Jesus so closely that

our very life, our growth, our

actions, indeed even our desires

come from him as their source.

When we are authentically rooted

in Christ, and when his words

remain in us, then that cannot help

but transform us into people who

want what Jesus wants. And when

we want what he wants, why

wouldn't he give it to us?

Question of the Week

John 15:1-8: In what ways have

you been "pruned" by the Lord?

PAGE TWO FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 3RD, 2015

In the next few weeks I will be reflecting on differ-ent parts of the Mass: the Introductory Rite, the Lit-

urgy of the Word, Liturgy of the Eucharist, Com-munion Rite, and the Concluding/Dismissal Rite. The reason why I decided to write about different parts of Mass is because I need to remind myself and you, the faith community, how important Mass is as an act of worship and connection to Christ and His holy people. As we enter the church we dip our fingers into the Holy Water, thus reminding us of our Baptism and we reverently make the sign of the cross as a pro-fession of faith. It also reminds us that we are in the presence of God the Father, Son, and the Holy Spir-it. We are in the house of God, therefore it is a time to quiet our minds and hearts so that we can partici-pate prayerfully in the entrance hymn with the choir. The priest, upon entering the sanctuary, kisses the altar. This is because the altar is a symbol of Christ and the Eucharistic sacrifice will be offered on it. Each altar also contains relics of the martyrs and very often the relics of the patron saint of the par-ish. Because we belong to God, we begin every Mass by signing ourselves with the cross in the name of the Holy Trinity. Then, the priest asks God’s grace by saying, “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all,” and the congregation responds say-ing, “And with your spirit.” Because none of us is fully worthy and is in need of further conversion, we ask mercy for our sins before

we listen to the word of God and receive the Body and Blood of Christ. During this short pause, before the prayer ‘I confess to you almighty God....’ it might be good just to tell God that we are not so worthy but we know that He is joyous that we are here. It would be good to express our gratitude for inviting us to participate and be joyful to be here with Him. Having been forgiven of our sins it is time to ex-press our gratitude to God. We want to thank God for His love and forgiveness of our sins and we do it by joyfully and prayerfully singing the Gloria, which is a fourth century hymn of glory and praise. It begins with the words of the angels to the shep-herds on the first Christmas night, “Glory to God in the highest…” The Introductory Rite concludes with the opening prayer which is called the ‘Collect.’ It begins with the priest saying, “Let us pray…” followed by a pause for the people’s silent prayer. All of these si-lent prayers of the people are then collected and of-fered to God in the prayer offered by the priest. The priest offers this prayer with outstretched arms symbolizing being freed by Jesus dying on the cross and rising from death for us. The congregation to-gether in one voice responds ‘Amen’ to this opening prayer. ‘Amen’ means ‘so be it’ or ‘let it be.’ It is the people’s acknowledgement and acceptance as their own the prayer which the priest has offered to God. How gratefully and meaningfully do you use the

Introductory Rite of Mass as you prepare to receive

the precious Body and Blood of Christ?

Fr. Devdas

The successes of a Santa Sophia Acade-my student are very apparent as seen in the bulletin proclaiming the many accomplishments of our soon-to-be graduates. This is not a one year anomaly nor is it just our graduates. All of our students find spiritual, aca-demic, and responsible and respectful

citizenship successes daily as we Seek Wisdom, Live Virtue and Encounter Christ through a stellar, dy-namic, and excellent program, teachers, parents and most especially our awesome students. YOUR child should be part of this superb community!! We'd be honored to give you a tour of your parish school and set-up your child for these successes through a placement test and registration for the 2015-2016 school year. Call (619) 463-0488 today and make an appointment for a tour!

Santa Sophia Academy Students (Catholic High School Class of 2019) SCORE!!

Each year St. Augustine High School offers academ-ic scholarships to the 10 young men who have the h i g h e s t c o m p o s i t e s c o r e s o n t h e HSPT examination. This year, as nearly 300 young men sat for the examination, Santa Sophia Academy student, Johnathon Soro earned the top composite score! To recognize his accomplishment, the St. Au-gustine High School community is awarding him a $10,000 scholarship at entrance. Congratula-tions Johnathon! Congratulations to Johnathon’s parents and teachers as well.

We are pleased to announce that Santa Sophia Academy eighth grader Nicole Stepovich is receiv-ing Honors at Entrance as she begins at the Acade-my of Our Lady of Peace this fall. Nicole scored in the top 5% of the entering class on her entrance ex-am and was invited to write an essay for a scholar-ship to the Academy. Nicole won the "Pilot's Schol-arship" and was awarded an $8,000 scholarship at entrance. Congratulations Nicole! Congratulations to Nicole’s parents and teachers as well. Santa So-phia Academy is very proud of these student’s accomplishments!

We are also very proud to report that every year over half of our eighth grade applies to and is ac-cepted to the four Catholic High Schools here in San Diego. This year 14 of the 26 applied to Catho-lic High Schools! All of our students who applied

were accepted. WOW!! Way to go Great Eights! Each year many of our SSA Great Eights are re-ceived with honors and over the years we have had the top recipients of scholarships to St Augustine High School, Mater Dei, and Our Lady of Peace. The students who choose to apply to our local pub-lic high schools (and they are of very high caliber as well) also do VERY well. These students most often take honors classes and advanced placement cours-es. Santa Sophia Academy students do SHINE!!

CONGRATULATIONS to these students and their notable accomplishments.

Daily Prayer for Priests

O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests;

For your unfaithful and tepid priests; For your priests laboring at home or

Abroad in distant mission fields. For your tempted priests;

For your lonely and desolate priests; For your young priests; For your dying

priests; For the souls of your priests in Purgatory.

But above all, I recommend to you The priests dearest to me;

The priest who baptized me; The priests who absolved me from my sins;

The priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me

Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion; The priests who taught and instructed me;

All the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way

(especially……………..….) O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart,

And bless them abundantly in time and in Eternity,

Amen
