Salam Sejahtera and a happy new year to all ILAM members and our faithful readers. This issue marks the second edition for the new council session and it is full of news and information for everyone. For the past few months, we have been involved in various collaborations, projects and events undertaken by ILAM. Among them was the ILAM-MGBC CPD Seminar which recorded a full house response from members and other industry players. Another milestone we achieved was the courtesy call to an ILAM Honorary Member, who is also Malaysia’s former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. The fruitful visit was held to brief Tun about the current state of Landscape Architecture in Malaysia and the future direction of the profession.

Stepping into the new year, we are in the midst of preparing our main annual event, the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards MLAA & ILAM Gala Night 2015. This prestigious event will be held on 11 April at One World Hotel, One Utama, Selangor. We look forward to seeing all our supporters and friends again this year. Via this issue, we will be providing a snapshot of what to expect in the latest landscape design trends with the submissions for this year’s MLAA Awards.

In mid-January 2015, once The Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards submission process for the year 2014 was closed, the judging of entries could begin. Judging the submissions was a most exciting event as the best work of our industry bore witness to the profession as it has grown from strength to strength over the years.

With a record number of submissions this year with 106 entries in 6 categories, the awards have clearly shown a major leap in design trends and ideas. Therefore, just prior to the MLAA Awards in April, we are excited to share with you some of the latest landscape architecture trends - a snapshot if you will of what to expect during the incoming Awards night.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE 2014

Sustainability Green and sustainable design has become a priority as many of the landscape designs put sustainable elements to the forefront. Some projects were even willing to scarify more built up spaces for greeneries, coupled with recycling efforts, clean energy generation, water conservation and composting facilities to name a few.

going multilevelGreen spaces no longer exist on the ground, due to limited urban spaces. To create a different spatial experience, landscape architects have created multilevel green spaces to maximise landscaped areas. Multilevel landscapes also serve as links between properties and provide vehicular-free zones for some developments.

cRAFTMANSHIPFine craftsmanship is another trend for this year. The bygone colonial era has been brought to life once more with the finest handiwork on display in every detail.

urban mobilityWith the current trend of cycling as the new mode of urban transportation, more and more cities have conducted studies on cycling options and tracks which enable cyclist to commute from point A to point B. Landscape architects were recently involved in a study and design process for a new cycling corridor to connect places and reduce carbon footprints.

REFLECTION OF NATUREThe elements of nature such as the moon, sun, wind are also becoming an inspiration for landscape design details which can be reflected in hardscape elements.

ROUGH AND RAWTo minimise maintenance and present a more natural look to the overall landscape design, materials are exposed, raw, without treatment. Creepers freely grow up the façade of the hardscape to compliment the surrounding forest.

FOLDING LAND FORMThe blending of art and earth forms has inspired a new trend of design which brings landscape into a 3 dimensional understructure. In the design, this can be seen in the formation of earth plates which create a unique multilevel green space.

ART AND CULTUREIncorporating local artistic talent into landscape design is another trend that is popular. It can be seen in the sculptures which create an iconic piece in residential precincts or in the middle of busy streets in Kuala Lumpur.

CALL OF COURTESY

Date26 January 2015VenuePerdana Leadership FoundationPutrajaya

The discussion focused on 3 topics, the first being advice about an upcoming act, the Landscape Architecture Act. The bill is in the final stage of the process and is ready to be put forward and hopefully endorsed by parliament. ILAM gained full support from Tun who gave his suggestion that ILAM should promote the profession further and make it visible to the public and other professions.

The second issue was related to liberalisation, globalisation and AFTA, and how best for the Landscape Architecture profession to position itself ahead of the challenges. Tun advised ILAM to strengthen the profession by improving the quality of services provided, better education and thus graduates, endorse quality designs and landscape development as well as improve the requirements for landscape management and maintenance. Tun also believes that ILAM should continue to play a vital role in nation building and development and produce new and creative ideas to help solve environmental issues. Problems of flooding, uncontrolled deforestation, unbalanced urban development and other environmental degradation need to be championed by the profession. There must also be a balance between development and green and natural areas.

During the final stages of the meeting, Tun explained that the future of the profession is assured yet feels it is timely that the profession be regulated as issues of sustainability, environment, public safety, quality environment and quality living have become crucial in today’s world. The role of landscape architects should fill those gaps and so Tun hopes that ILAM cleverly positions the profession alongside related fields and moves forward so that Malaysia can become the ‘Beautiful Garden Nation’.

BONGODAYBED

This piece is inspired by the piles of paddy straws after the autumn harvest. It takes the shape of an onion which creates a unique space. The void on the rear side can be used as a window, allowing the view to expand beyond the daybed. To make it even more interesting, the daybed can be hung in a tree, giving a bird’s eye view of the nearby landscape.

The upper end of the Bongo daybed incorporates a woven pattern inspired by a haystack, while the lower end of the supporting section uses a hollow weaving style. The functional piece can be disassembled freely and used either as a sofa or as a daybed.

Pedestrian Climate Responsive Design for Bukit Bintang

The design seeks a solution to ease pedestrian movement while creating a comfortable environment for the public. The study covers existing urban fabric such as zoning, building distribution and height, nodes and link ways. The most essential data for the study is the temperature and humidity study during the different times of the day.

The design idea and solution looks into providing a pleasing street experience, ample walkways, green areas and vegetated zones, various activity zones as well as attempting to preserve the vista.

The various layers of the study form the overall master plan of the Climate Responsive Design aimed at assisting pedestrians by providing shade, controlling wind flow, using high albedo materials to reflect unwanted solar radiation and providing ample green spaces. This will reduce the micro temperature by up to 2 degrees Celsius.

Volcanoscape & the Future of MountainCreativity & Prosperity

INTRODUCTION2015 marks 200 years since the largest volcanic eruption ever recorded in modern history occurred here in Indonesia. The eruption of Mount Tambara, a 4,300m high mountain and one of the tallest peaks in the Indonesian Archipelago, created new landscapes, buried three kingdoms and killed about 17,000 people. It also impacted global climate and created political and social impacts.

The phenomenon of Tambora, have inspired ISLA - Indonesian Society of Landscape Architects to call for landscape architects in the Asia Pacific Region and the world to contribute towards the sustainability and prosperity of what we call mountain and volcanoscape. The landscape created by the eruption of Tambora is an example of huge challenge for landscape architects to plan, design, and manage areas sensitive to disasters.
