Raglan Waite, 50, works as caretaker at the Good Samaritan Inn in Kingston, Jamaica. (Andrew McChesney / Adventist Mission)

    Adopted by God

My adopted parents died when I was 17, and I began looking for my biological parents.

Fast Facts About a quarter of Jamaica’s economy relies on tourism, with more than 1

million international tourists visiting every year.

Jamaica is the largest English-speaking island in the Caribbean, although most people speak Jamaican Patois, an English-based Creole.

Jamaica achieved independence from the United Kingdom in 1962 but remained part of the Commonwealth, so Queen Elizabeth II remains queen and head of state.

Protestants make up 70 percent of the population of Jamaica, and Adventists are the second-largest denomination after the Church of God. One in every nine Jamaicans is Adventist.

    ~ Adventist Mission Story ~

To Sabbath School teachers: This story is for Sabbath, March 24. Click here for photos to share while telling the mission story.

By Raglan Waite, as told to Andrew McChesney

Today’s story is by Raglan Waite, the 50-year-old caretaker of the Good Samaritan Inn, a Seventh-day Adventist center that assists the homeless in Kingston, Jamaica. Ask a man to share the first-person account.

I grew up in a children’s home and was adopted into a Sunday-keeping home at age of six. My adopted parents died when I was 17, and I had little food to eat. Desperate to find a way to survive, I began looking for my biological parents.

I returned to the children’s home, and I learned the name of my biological mother. But no one would tell me where she lived.

Next, I went to the local Poor Relief Department, a government agency responsible for identifying and assisting the destitute. The woman working there told me that my mother and other members of my biological family were on the list of people receiving assistance. She even said my biological brother was at my high school. She declined to give additional information, citing privacy concerns. But she promised to contact my brother so he could find me if he wished.

One day I was watching a soccer match and one of the high school teachers touched my shoulder. He said, “Are you Raglan? We are brothers.”

    I was so happy!

Carl was seven years older than me, and he wanted to take me home.

I packed up my few belongings and moved to my new home. I saw my mother for the first time. She suffered a mental illness and didn’t seem to recognize me. But I was glad to finally meet her.

My brother was a Seventh-day Adventist, and he invited me to go to church with him on Sabbath.

Church members helped me a lot. I could not read well, and they taught me to read and write with the Adult Sabbath School Bible Study Guide. They helped me attend a summer course at the Adventist university, where I learned how to give Bible studies.

By the age of 22, I was married, had a child, and was working at a gas station in the tourist resort of Montego Bay. I also was an ordained elder and active in the church. Church leaders asked me to open a branch Sabbath School in a rural area that once had had a strong Adventist presence. We tore out pages from Sabbath School study guides and distributed them to former church members as a way of outreach. That’s how poor we were. We reclaimed 50 former church members.

My personal life began to fall apart when I was 36. I divorced and got remarried. After a dispute with a church leader, I walked away from the church. I continued to keep the Sabbath, but worshipped at home.

Three years ago, I moved across the island to Jamaica’s capital, Kingston, and set up a business with a partner. My wife stayed with relatives in another town as I tried to get the business up and running. But the business collapsed after my partner and I had an argument, and I struggled to find another job. Eventually, I lost my home, and pride kept me from turning to my wife and other relatives for help. I slept on the street for three months.

One day, I sat in a park, talking with another homeless man about where I could take a bath, get a change of clothes, and find some food. He told me, “Go to the Good Samaritan Inn, and they will give you a meal.”

I said, “I want to go there!”

The people at the Good Samaritan Inn were kind to me, and they fed me and gave me a change of clothing. Soon I learned that the Good Samaritan Inn was owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church and run by church members.

I started coming to the Good Samaritan Inn regularly, and I felt compelled to give something back. So, I started cleaning the yard. Then I began attending the Adventist Church again, and I was rebaptized.

Today, I am 50 years old and the caretaker of the Good Samaritan Inn. I have my own office and living quarters here. I have reconciled with my second wife.

It was tough on the street. It is good to be adopted—and readopted—by God.

Part of the 2015 Thirteenth Sabbath Offering went to renovate the Good Samaritan Inn in Kingston, Jamaica, and expand its work to include a free medical and dental center for the homeless.

Thank you for helping the Good Samaritan Inn reach out to people like Raglan.

    NOTES

    1. It is a remarkable thing that, in the midst of all His danger, Jesus did not for a moment forget to care for His disciples, and so the only favour asked of His captors was that His disciples might retain their liberty.

    2. Annas had been appointed high priest in A. D. 7, by the Emperor Quirinius, but because of his constant intrigue and -unwearied plottings, was deprived of his office in A. D. 14, by Valerius. He, however, had the privilege of seeing his five sons successively raised to the same office. Caiaphas, being son-in-law to Annas, gave way to the influence of the latter to such an extent that the father-in-law really ruled matters in the office of high priest.

GOVERNMENT OF SUDAN GRANTS RELIGIOUS FREEDOM TO ADVENTIST CHURCH

MENA president visits the government official to express gratitude Mar 14, 2018 | Beruit, Lebanon | Chanmin Chung, communication director, Middle East and North Africa Union

Rick McEdward, president of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Middle East and North Africa, made his first visit to the nation of Sudan.

These days, the government of Sudan provides official registration for many church groups who are represented in the nation and the Seventh-day Adventist Church is officially registered as a church organization in the country.

McEdward met with the Minister of Guidance and Endowment, His Excellency, AbuBaker Osman Ibrahim, which has a department of Church

    Relations.

His Excellency welcomed this initial meeting as a sign of good relations. “As a nation we are providing freedom for Christian groups to meet,” said the Minister during the meeting.

McEdward shared his appreciation for Sudan, a predominately Muslim nation, to provide official recognition to the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

"It is a great pleasure to be able to have our church operate and have the open support of freedom from the Sudanese government," said McEdward.

McEdward also met with local Adventist congregations and encouraged them. There are about 70 Adventists in the country.

“I am very encouraged after visiting our churches in Sudan. The believers are doing well and are happy with the government for registration,” said McEdward. “I challenged our groups to be a light to their communities by sharing God’s love.”

MR. PENCE CALLS AMERICA BACK TO GOD

Tuesday March 20th, 2018 in Briefings, Prophetic Intelligence Briefings

After the death of Billy Graham, Vice President Mike Pence reminded CPAC at-tendees of Graham’s speech at the National Cathedral after the 9/11 terror attacks.

Pence called on the crowd to “reconnect … with one another … with our communi-ties” in days ahead and in “these challenging times, to reconnect to something deep-er, something that speaks to the very heart of who we are.”

The Vice President called Graham, “one of the greatest Americans of the past centu-ry,” prompting applause from the audience. Graham’s ministry was to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ, a ministry that Pence remarked, “changed millions.”

Shortly after the Islamic terror attacks on 9/11/2001 that killed thousands of Ameri-cans, Graham spoke at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC.

Pence, at the time a first-term member of Congress, recalled the event for the crowd: “I’ll never forget what he said. On that day, Billy Graham said to the American people, ‘The spirit of this nation will not be defeated.’ But he admonished Ameri-cans to, in his words, “come together to confess our need for God.”

He said, “We’ve always needed God from the beginning of this nation, but today we need him especially.” And he reminded us that the Bible says, “God is our refuge and strength, and ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear.”

The Vice President espoused his faith in the “boundless capacity of the American people,” the President and leaders they have elected, and “that other kind of faith,

The storms of live come in all shapes, forms, and sizes. Even though things look bleak and the heart is overcome with fear, dread and even death, God, the

Saviour of man is always with you.

No matter the struggles, decisions or challenges that you may face, there is One greater than all these!

Jesus Christ! He will NEVER leave you NOR forsake you,

no matter how rough your storms may become!

    ~ Reflections ~

what Billy Graham called ‘hope for the present and hope for the future.’”

“…in the days ahead, as we work to advance our cause, restore our country, let us also remember to claim that hope,” he continued before paraphrasing 2 Chronicles 7:14 from the Bible. “If His people, who are called by His name, will humble them-selves and pray, He’ll hear from heaven, and he’ll heal this land,” Pence said as the crowd began to clap, then rise to their feet as he continued, “This one nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.”

While it is good to call people to Christ, and to turn from their wicked ways, there is a difference between it being done by a pastor and a vice-president. Mr. Pence in his official capacity as vice-president of the United States is not wrong in his assess-ment. Yet, the underlying trend is concerning. At some point, when there has been enough pressure from relentless disasters and other crises, the American people, prompted by their leaders both religious and civil, will demand that the nation get back to God, a legal pressure that will drive Sunday worship laws.

“…Even in free America, rulers and legislators, in order to secure public favor, will yield to the popular demand for a law enforcing Sunday observance.” The Great Controversy, page 592.

It will all seem so right. Yet, the solution to enforce a day of worship contrary to the law of God will be so wrong.

Use Well the Talent of Speech

You are fairer than the sons of men; grace is poured upon Your lips; therefore God has blessed You forever.

    Psalm 45:2, NKJV

By diligent effort all may acquire the power to read intelligibly, and to speak in a full, clear, round tone, in a distinct and impressive manner. By doing this we may greatly increase our efficiency as workers for Christ. Every Christian is called to make known to others the unsearchable riches of Christ; therefore all should seek for perfection in speech. They should present the Word of God in a way that will commend it to the hearers. God does not design that His human channels shall be uncouth. It is not His will that human beings shall belittle or degrade the heavenly current that flows through Him to the world. We should look to Jesus, the perfect pattern; we should pray for the aid of the Holy Spirit, and in His strength we should seek to train every organ for perfect work. Especially is this true of those who are called to public service. Every minister and every teacher should bear in mind that they are giving to the people a message that involves eternal interests. The truth spoken will judge them in the great day of final reckoning. And with some souls the manner of the one delivering the message will determine its reception or rejection. Then let the Word be so spoken that it will appeal to the understanding and impress the heart. Slowly, distinctly, and solemnly should it be spoken, yet with all the earnestness which its importance demands. The right culture and use of the power of speech has to do with every line of Christian work; it enters into the home life, and into all our relations with one another. We should accustom ourselves to speak in pleasant tones, to use pure and correct language, and words that are kind and courteous. Sweet, kind words are as dew and gentle showers to the soul. The Scripture says of Christ that grace was poured into His lips that He might “know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary” (Isaiah 50:4).—Christ’s Object Lessons, pp. 335, 336.
