WOMENnS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2014 - 1ST Round Pool A
T&T overcomes Bahamas in Pool A opener
and we needed to be quicker on defence and we weren't
at most times.
"We also made a few mental errors, but credit to the
T&T women because they played a good match and
even though we did not win there are a lot of positives
we can take forward to the next match with us", said
Rolle.
Esdelle, on the other hand was happy to start with the
win saying, "We played a good match. In the first two
sets we were fous but in the third set we lost our way a
bit before regaining our focus and completing the
victory.
"Overall we could have played much better, but a win is
always welcome to start a tournament."
Joe Smith, coach of Bahamas also felt it was a good
match from his perspective but was quick to admit he
felt T&T was not at its sharpest.
"I don't thik T&T served as well as it could have against
us as because we know it is a tall hard hitting unit and
the best team in the Caribbean.
"But I am generally pleased by the effort from my team
as we did a lot of good things that we can build on for
the other matches to come.
Francisco Cruz, coach of the T&T women said he was
happy with the final outcome but was more focused on
giving his reserves some playing time.
"This is the first stage of qualification and for us to
compete well against the top teams in Norceca we need
to have a good tea of 12 players, not just one or two
oustanding players.
In Saturday's afternoon session, T&T came up
Guadeloupe from 6pm while Bahamas and host
Suriname hunted their first victory in the second contest
from 8pm.
On Sunday morning, in the final preliminary round of
matches, Bahamas faces Guadeloupe at 9am((8am TT
time) while two hours later Suriname comes up against
T&T in a rematch of the 2010 Caribbean Championship
final which the "Calypso Spikers" won.
At the end of the round-robin series, the top two teams
will meet in the final and the third and fourth place team
battle for bronze on Sunday afternoon after which the
top three teams will advance to next year's second
round of qualifiers.
The women's qualifying series in Suriname is the
penultimate women's first round group of the eight
groups of qualifiers to be played with only Pool E
(Jamaica, Barbados, Aruba, Cayman Islands) carded for
November in Jamaica left to be completed.

Channon Thompson and Darlene Ramdin had nine
points each as T&T, the recently crowned five-time
Caribbean Women's Volleyball champions overcame
Bahamas in four sets to begin play in Pool A of the 2014
FIVB World Volleyball Women's Norceca First Round
qualifiers which served off in Paramaribo, Suriname, on
Saturday mornig.
The Norceca eighth ranked "Calypso Spikers" who used
all 12 of their players during the match won 25-20, 25-
15, 21-25 25-15 in one hour, 25 minutes at the Ismay
Van Wilgen Sports Hall after dominating on spikes 31-
20 and blocks 10-6.
Sinead Jack and captain Krystle Esdelle also chipped in
with eight points apiece for T&T which also held an 11-2
advantage on service aces but was not as clinical as in
recent past against Caribbean opponents.
This was eveident in T&T women committing 44
unforced errors mainly on serving against an improved
Bahamian team which also had a poor serving output
and committed three more errors than the winners
overall.
For Bahamas, Melinda Bastian who missed the recent
Caribbean Championship in US Virgin Islands due to
injury led her team in scoring on return to international
play with eight points while Kelsie Johnson got six and
Cheryse Bain, five.
Speaking after the loss, Bahamian captain, Krystel Rolle
while not making excuses for her team's perfomance
first pointed out her team was a bit fatigued having
only arrived in Suriname early Saturday morning from
Naasau.
She added, "In addition, we had a major challenge in
that we knew the T&T girls were much taller than us
Ancina inspires Guadeloupe´s upset of host Suriname
An elated Delag said he was happy for his girls because
they played a good match despite the slow start.
Reflecting on the first two sets, Delag said he believes
his players were a bit afraid of playing.
"I said to them if you do not improve on how you are
playing you will not win the match and the girls
responded nicely. We began to play much better and
was able to force the match to five sets and won against
a good team."

Guadeloupe captain Isabelle Acina led from the front
with a team-high 22 points as her team overcame a 0-2
sets defiict to stun host Suriname 3-2 in the second
match of Session One in Pool A of the 2014 FIVB World
Volleyball Women's Norceca First Round qualifiers which
served off in Paramaribo, Suriname, on Saturday
mornig.
In addition to Acina, whose tally included 16 kills and
six aces, Sylvia Sidney got 12 and Natacha Clairville,
nine important points for Guadeloupe in the 18-25, 14-
25, 25-17, 25-22, 15-8 victory in one hour and 38
minutes to silence what started out as a lively crowd at
the Ismay van Wilgen Sports Hall.
Commenting on the win Acina whose team held the
edge on spikes and blocks, 36-31 and 10-4 respevtively
said, "We are happy for the win after our slow start.
"Our service was very good which was key to our
victory," she added.
"After losing the first two sets our coach (Jean-Louis
Delag) said to us we have to move the ball around a
lot more and we made a few adjustments from there on
and we eventual won an exciting match."
A disappointed Cheryl Brunnings, captain of Suriname,
the 2010 Caribbean Championship runners-up noted
that after winning the first two sets in convincing style
her team stopped playing.
"Our serving and passing game just fell apart while
Guadeloupe stepped up its game and we could not
respond and in the end we did not win."
Eric Aikman, coach of the host nation echoed the views
of his captain saying,"In the first two sets Guadeloupe
did not play well but from the moment they got going
and played better we dropped our service and passing
game.
"Guadeloupe also played a good match technicallt and
we did not have an answer for it today."
