Who is Jo Kwok?Jo says she is mild mannered good Chinese girl and said you’d be surprised what you find by googling. She is a reasonably open book on social media - Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin, Twitter but if you look a little harder she comes up on the internet as an actress! She said it was one of the embarassing things you do when you’re younger. It was an action adventure trailer for Huntsman 5.1.

At the 28 second mark she has a whole 2 seconds of screen time. She said she was obviously a poor actress, as she didn’t make it to anything beyond the trailer. But she said she didn’t obviously didn’t heed lessons when young and was only fairly recently convinced by PDG Richard Garner to star in a Rotary promotional video promoting Muna, filmed at Parliament House of Victoria.

Who is she really? Beyond her online presence, the real Jo: l is a not very domesticated Cancerian who likes taking long walks

on the beach, cocktails and taking random photosl is a first generation Chinese - no. 1 daughter of no.1 son, born in

Mt Isa, Queensland l is a daughter of a Mum who is a registered nurse from Malyasia &

Dad a chemical engineer from Chinal grew up in Queensland & Newcastle…exception of 2 years in

Swakopmund, Namibia…before starting Melbournel who much to my parents disappointment didn’t become a doctor,

lawyer or accountantl holds a Bachelor of Economics, Grad Dip in Marketingl is passionate about community, helping others & making a

differencel is a proud mum to Amelie & Jack, and married to long suffering

Shawn.

She is passionate about the local community, and being able to make a difference, and now driven by being a good role model for her kids to show them they can be the best they can be.

Professionally - Her non-linear career has included business roles in finance, sales/marketing, advertising, with the latter half

of her career in executive search and recruitment, hr/coaching and strategic change management. She worked with big brands and blue chips such as NAB, Coles, Masterfoods and been part of memorable milestones such as part of Guy Russo’s leadership team to turn around and transform Kmart, and with the advertising agency that launched Virgin Blue into Australia. Apart from being a current Rotary Club of Brighton Board Member, she is also a Board Member of Sandringham Football ClubJo is now working with Shawn full time, in their own business - Career Management Services, which is a leading personalised career services company. They are dedicated to assisting individuals in successfully achieving career goals, dreams and ambitions in a wide range of industries. Their clientele are from all across Australia and NZ ranging from fresh graduates to senior executives looking for their next Board position. They work across extremely diverse industry sectors public, private and not for profit dealing with a vast range of clientele from CFOs, marketers, IT to educators, forensic morticians, engineers. With every circumstance and situation being different, they help people from first steps into the job market, to change jobs, to apply for Board positions and/or transition to different careers.

Since 2013 she been a very active Rotarian – as a Club member, an active Bayside community member and with District 9810. • Originally as a Hampton Rotarian• Has been involved with District Think Tanks & Membership/

Marketing (including the e-marketing Brochures for 9800) and promoting activities for MUNA (Model United Nation’s Assembly at Parliament House)

• Jo initiated the free school readiness hearing screenings for Bayside kids between 3-6 years old, with Bayside Council, which is a free service (run every 6 months, it screens about 110 kids each time) that is offered in conjunction with the University of Melbourne (providing Masters of Audiology student with hands on vocational experience) and Bayside Council to detect critical hearing issues which affect learning in foundation years

• Successful in obtaining Rotary District grants for her previous Club, for the Bayside Toy Library to provide educational toys/aids for children with specialist needs, plus grants for volunteers from the Federal Government to support Hampton Rotary’s Bayside Farmers Market in FUNdraising

• In 2015 initiated the Glow for Good which she conceptualised to celebrate Rotary’s 110th birthday. Designed to help raise the Rotary profile in the local Bayside community. Inspired by the theme “Light Up”, they held an attempt to break a Guinness World Record (to have the most number of people lighting glowsticks simultaneously which previously stood at 836). On April 18, 2015, at sunset with 1,298 people including 8 Rotary

Clubs working together and approximately 100 additional volunteers we succeeded even under pending gale force conditions and storm rolling in on the beach in Sandringham, even if we only held the record for a few months, managing to as a by product raise $10k for the Robert Connor Dawes Foundation (Shawn Taylor and I were both awarded as Paul Harris Fellows due to this large scale initiative)

Last year outside of Rotary, Jo, as a personal project and in conjunction with a number of volunteers including Hampton RSL and the Bayside Police, working with BayCiss and Family Life they hosted a Christmas dinner for disadvantaged families at Hampton RSL. Bringing some families facing hardships together to get into the Christmas spirit with some traditional Christmas fare, some lawn bowls/games and a visit from Santa with some gifts was a really awarding hands on local experience that she would like to see if Brighton Rotary might want to be involved in.

• Since joining Brighton Rotary in February she has been running the Brighton Rotary Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts. She also has had the opportunity to help with the Brighton Lunch and Night of Stars, plus been involved with the Brighton Sec Mock Interviews, and RMIT Mentoring Program (her very first mentee has successfully obtained an internship at Australia Post following one of her coaching sessions).

• She is now a Board Member - Marketing & Communications for this current Rotary year 2017/18. Her main aim is to raise the awareness and profile of Brighton Rotary, and all the great things that Brighton Rotary do…as part of that they are working on a website revamp, and a more strategic approach to promotion of our events/activities and the other great deeds we do in the Community.

Jo says she loves being able to make a difference and to optimise potential so when she does stuff she likes to know she is working with amazing people and that what she is doing is making as big an impact as possible…which is why she is really looking forward to doing much more as part of Rotary Club of Brighton! Chairman Anne Holland introduced Acting President Norm Thomas who welcomed everyone to the meeting. Norm welcomed guests in James Newbury who is the incoming Member for Brighton and Tony Keenan from Moira who would receive a cheque from our Club later in the meeting PP Ron Sher. Norm also welcomed Jan Eriksen and Simone Chin who was visiting our club for the first time and is a potential member.

Norm then mentioned the recent passing of member Stephen Hartney and PP Ian Mence was asked to come forward and read out a eulogy to his long time mate. A transcript of this talk is on page 6 of this Bulletin.

Norm also made mention of the situation with members who haven’t paid their fees and he made an impassioned plea for them to please pay up which will make PP Bill Howley very happy.

PP Barry Hickman “Horses for Causes”Barry spoke about this exhibition and about the Preview on 11 October. He said that Violence Free Families had been given 43 acrylic life size horses which had been hand painted by prominent and upcoming Victorian artists. Its on display at National Storage 60 Dawson St, Brunswick. The preview is on 11 October and the auction on 15 November. See our website for details and back cover of this Bulletin.

PP Des Thomas: “Lift the Lid”Des spoke about this evening and said there would be a 20 piece big band from St Leonards performing and a dance floor. The Lift the Lid campaign is to create awareness of mental illness and its a national campaign which involves all Rotary clubs throughout Australia. All Rotarians are encouraged to participate and the hat will be the theme of the night and therefore you have to wear a hat and you might get a surprise. Des said that on the table last week there were some flyers which informed people a little bit more about Lift the Lid on Mental Illness. He looked forward to seeing us all at the meeting and bookings were closing on Tuesday morning 10 October.

All Tiger supporters: After their big win in the Grand Final Sgt Steve thought it only right that the supporters pay a $2 fine; The most immaculately dressed person at the meeting: Sgt Steve said that he really favoured PDG John King for this award until he found out he had been to a funeral so had to dress up. He bestowed it on PP Ron Sher instead for wearing the best jacket the Sarg had ever seen; The most casually dressed award (and sexy as well): Sarg said that PP Tony Nanfra with a leather jacket that caused the Sarg to exclaim ”Ooh Mamma!” stood out from the rest;PP Tony Nanfra: Tony had trouble opening the lock on the raffle wheel;PP Ian Mence: Sarg said he had known Ian for 20 years and had breakfast with him regularly and he never paid. Last week he paid but he never left a tip;The Late Steve Hartney: Sarg said that he had known Steve for over 10 years through Ian and the Liberal party and he said he was a good friend and it was a tragic time for all the wrong reasons. Sarg said he wanted to relate a story about Steve. He and Janey were in Istanbul at the Grand Bazaar with thousands and thousands of people milling around and Janey went shopping and he said he would wait for her. Suddenly he heard “Buy you a beer mate” and it was Steve walking straight past. They had dinner with him that night. Sarg said it would be really good if we all gave $2 to Rotary in memory of Steve and this love of community.

Robyn Lichter & Cameron Ward: Couldn’t seem to decide who was doing Grace and who was doing the Toast and mucked it up;Alan Jarrott: Sarg pointed out that in last week’s Bulletin there were at least 10 photos of Alan and this surpassed the number of photos allowed of any member in the Bulletin at any one time. Sarg asked for a $2 fine.

Sergeant’s Session - Steve Tsimos

The suicide death of my old mate and close mate on Sunday 1 October came as a huge shock that I am still trying to recover from. Whatever a suicide looks like Steve certainly did not fill the bill. However, I guess we never know everything that goes in people’s heads. Steve had outstanding qualities that made him very popular, such as integrity, reliability, honesty, sincerity, and he never let anybody down in his life. Sometimes people let him down but never the other way around.

Steve was a strong guy and a gentle guy, dedicated to serving his community and his country. I met him about twenty years ago inside the Liberal Party and we have been close mates all these years. He stood five times for Parliament over the last twenty years, four times for State and once for Federal. He only got up once but immediately lost by losing the first election after winning preselection.

Steve was a qualified engineer who got caught up in politics in his thirties, and since then he has mainly worked for Liberal Politicians, and at times for the Party itself. Steve and I have spent the years hugely involved in the Liberal Party we loved, with endless meetings and numerous committees. Many is the night we have sat up over a bottle of Scotch arguing about political philosophy and endless policy issues. He was also an expert in new technologies. He was always fixing my computer and advising me about my mobile phone.

Steve also stood for the Bayside Council and was elected, and became Mayor for a year within a four-year term. He remained very involved in the Council and helped his new partner Sonya to get elected as a councillor. Steve has a daughter who was very close to him, and she has flown home from England now with her husband to try and deal with this family crisis.

Steve had some turmoil in his private life over the last two years which troubled him deeply, and no doubt contributed to his tragic death. But it was way out of character for him to suicide, and very hard for us who were his mates to understand and deal with. He was such a strong guy that it would have taken something unbelievably stressful to bring him to this point.

Although Steve only recently became a member of the Club, he had wanted to join for a long time, and was saving up for it. Sad for the Club, he would have been an outstanding member and worker. Steve loved the Club and had already put forward a terrific idea for an Annual Rotary ball, perhaps black tie, at the old Brighton Town Hall. He obtained the preliminary Bayside Council approval before submitting the plan to our Club Board. PP Ian Mence

Highlights of Meeting Thursday 5 October

PP Ron Sher presents cheque to Tony Keenan from Moira

PP Ron Sher said the Rotary Foundation of our club became an incorporated entity and the Rotary club is the shareholder of the Foundation. The Foundation last year received donations of more than $30,000 plus $24,000 from the Norm Williams Fund which we merged into the Foundation. Each year the Foundation offers to donate 50% of the earned dividends and interest to charities recommended by the board of our club. PP Dale Hoy requested the Foundation make a donation of $10,348.53 to the Moira Disability and Youth Services to fund and evaluation of a practical program on adolescence and family violence at Deakin University. Ron said the Team Leader for Moira was Tony Keenan and Ron then presented the cheque to him. Tony thanked us very much. He said he loved coming to our club. Tony thanked Barry Hickman who had been a source strength to him and made him a better youth worker. He became a youth worker at 51 as he wanted to make a difference in the world.

EACH YEAR THE LIFE OF JOHN ILHAN – A LOVING FATHER AND GENEROUS AUSTRALIAN – IS CELEBRATED AT A GALA EVENT IN MELBOURNE, WHERE BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS PAY TRIBUTE TO THE BIG MAN WHO CONTINUES TO INSPIRE.

John Ilhan was a business leader, an innovator and an entrepreneur who took one suburban store and developed it into a national mobile phone empire – Crazy John’s.

But in October 2007 his young life was tragically cut short while out walking before work.

One year before he died, John and his wife Patricia set up the Australian Food Allergy Foundation with a gift of $1 million towards Australian scientific research after one of their daughters was diagnosed with severe anaphylaxis to tree nuts. Today one in ten Australian babies is diagnosed with a food allergy – a growing problem and an issue very close to John’s heart.

I was born in 1949, the year my parents arrived by ship from a displaced persons camp in Austria. They arrived in April after an arduous journey and I arrived in July at the Royal Women’s Hospital. My first saving came shortly after when my mother, who understood little English then and spoke even less, was approached by the nursing staff who pantomimed for her that I was to be taken and given into a

good home. This was the era of the stolen generation and I almost joined them. My mother, of course, was a fighter and not to be dispossessed of her only son, promptly escaped from the hospital with me.I survived a severe pampering thereafter as my parents had never seen so much food freely available and all you had to do was work for it. I am still suffering the abundance they thrust on me, as they didn’t understand the quantities advised by the health centre.I attended Ripponlea State School then Caulfield North and ended in Melbourne High School. From there, to Monash University Medicine and in my fifth year I had the good fortune to do a rotation in Obs & Gyn at the Queen Victoria Hospital in Lonsdale St. I was besotted with O & G, which at that time fulfilled all my criteria for medicine. I would have a wonderful and mostly young group of patients who exhibited all manner of medical problems, which in those days we were allowed to treat, and I had the added benefit of doing surgery, which was my main aim.I have to digress at this point to preen. At the end of the Obs & Gyn term there was an exam for the prize as best in the year. My only claim to fame - here it comes - I won the prize from David Healy who was to go on to succeed Carl Wood as the Professor of O & G at Monash. At the end of the 6 year course which followed my graduation from Medicine, I became a Member of the College of O& G and then spent 2 years in the UK practising on the poor unsuspecting Brits before returning and becoming a Fellow of the College, now 14 years after starting my medical course. I began practising in South Yarra for a year and then good fortune led me to join a practice in Dandenong. After a little more than a year there, I was even more fortunate to meet Robyn and move into my own practice. That’s a whole other story.I have been very privileged in my life and mainly by meeting and convincing Robyn to marry me and stay in Australia. That’s also another whole other story.Robyn took over my practice as the manager and took on all the hard things. Hiring and firing staff, wages, leasing equipment, holidays, temporary staff and ensuring that the window to my practice always shone brightly. To add to that, Robyn managed to deliver 3 children uneventfully while still running the practice and made sure that none of the births interfered with the patients being seen.I’m sure I don’t need to tell anyone that the person who stands beside you, often in the shadow, is the most important.

For me this has certainly been true and Robyn supported my mad wish to bring keyhole surgery to the backwaters of Dandenong. In 1992 she came with me to Germany, leaving our 3 babies behind in the care of grandmothers who were completely out of their depth. We finally closed the practice when my nurse of 21 years who took over practice management for the last few years, decided to retire when her school teacher husband retired. Starting with new staff again was too hard and she was younger than me.This gave me the opportunity to stress Robyn again by pandering to my wish to volunteer in Ethiopia. She was really very supportive and even came with me for a few of the 6 weeks I went to the Addis Abbaba Fistula Hospital. Actually Robyn probably did a more important job than me as she organised the presentations the local doctors had arranged for a conference on Fistula repair. After returning to Australia we started a new era. With Robyn’s tolerance I started locums around Australia - partly to finance a move into the city and partly to keep me out of mischief. I chanced upon the Flying Surgical Service in South West Queensland and took up a position as one of 3 Flying Gynecologists and Obstetricians working 3 weeks in Queensland and recovering for 6 weeks at home. That recovery time has allowed us to join Rotary and we were lucky to be accepted at the Rotary Club of Roma as well. After 7 years working in Qld as a flying Gynaecologist, I now work less time and in varied areas thoughout Australia. We hope to be able to spend the time back in Melbourne volunteering our time and partying into our old age.

Cambodia - a brief summary of Maurice’s talk.In January of this year, Robyn and Maurice joined a “World of Difference” tour to Cambodia. Their aim was to discover if they could provide voluntary services for women’s health. What do they know?• Cambodia has a population of just under 15 million people. • In 2012, Cambodia ranked 138th out of 187 countries assessed

in the Human Development Index, a measure of well being composed of education, income and health.

• Among the biggest challenges facing Cambodia in the realm of public health today are high maternal, infant and child mortality.

• Approximately 39,000 births per year and probability of maternal death is 7%. ( In Australia it is about 7 per 100,000 )

• Generally speaking, reasons for maternal mortality in 3rd world countries are poor obstetric services.

Local context; what did they find?• As expected, high levels of inequity dependent upon where a woman lived and their ability to pay for services • Both government and private clinics in the cities providing services - some better than others, but all providing services for a fee. • The remote villages had medical clinics in their vicinity which could be reached by traveling by motor bike or a tractor • These clinics were staffed by nurses who had been trained for 1 to 3 years but had little up to date knowledge of gynecology or life saving techniques for women with complicated pregnancy or haemorrhage.• These nurses were very keen to learn but it seems they had no means of obtaining information. The big question? Can they support the development of a sustainable system of training, monitoring, review and feedback that will influence the mortality rate of women delivering babies in rural locations in Cambodia? Sally Hoffmann will join Maurice and with her extensive skills in managing chronic disease and bringing together diverse health services he is hoping they can make a significant impression on women’s health in Cambodia.

The StoryAnother perfect day with near full turnout. Weather getting better each round, and the re-opening of the course only a couple of weeks away. What with the new long water carry on hole 11, it will be really interesting to see how long it takes to fill up with golf balls.Star performer was David Bodycoat, taking out the off-the-stick first place. David excused himself and left early. Embarrassed at the thought of another prize, David?Next week will be week 6 of the Spring handicap competition. The GossipIvan Vojlay, this week’s trophy winner, set some sort of record by taking out the longest drive award - twice in the same game. While on the subject of records, Ian Cole has just created one as well. The highest ever net score of 50. Compare that with Bruce Crossley’s net score of 30. Only a cynic would suggest that the 20-stroke difference has anything to do with the fact that Bruce is the handicapper.Only an even greater cynic would associate Bruce’s coming 2-week absence with him prudently letting Ian cool down a bit.Arthur Hubbard, encouraged by his previous game at Sandringham, elected to use his now cobweb-free driver. Arthur, leave your driver to the spiders again. They make better use of it.En Passant I once knew a golfer called Ron Big hit, and his golf ball was gone It went a real long way, Across the next fairway And hit some poor golfer head on.Awards and RecognitionsHandicap winner Bruce CrossleyOff-the-stick winner David Bodycoat Nearest-the-pin winner Ian Cole Long drive winners Ivan Vojlay, Ivan VojlayPre-game chipping winner Bruce NewhamVojlay-Cole trophy Ivan Vojlay Capt Ron Stark
