Bernard McMenamin: “Estate Planning”

2

ernard spoke to us about some the experiences encountered with family issues as regards Estate Planning. He was surprised so many were there at the meeting. He said he

couldn’t imagine anything worse than a Chartered Accountant talking about Estate Planning - death, taxes etc. Instead he said he would talk about some of the interesting experiences he has had with his clients and also internationally with their estate planning group.

Bernard said that about 15 years ago there was a survey in the UK and USA and it concerned the experiences of beneficiaries of deceased estates. What were their complaints, what were their problems. He said that we would expect such things like “That brother got more than me”, “That useless sister got the lot” or “I didn’t get enough” etc. But there was none of that. The survey said that 60% of the people who were asked the question “What was their complaint” they said that they were not told what their parents were planning to do. When asked “What were their expectations” they said they didn’t know what was going to happen. 30% said “I didn’t know how to manage it - who are the advisors? Who do I turn to? Who’s the stockbroker? Who’s the property manager? Who’s the financial planner? Who’s the accountant? Who’s the lawyer?” They didn’t know.

Bernard said that what we really need are family meetings. Once he read that survey he realised that this is what they had to do for the couple of hundred families that his company act for and they have been doing it ever since. Some of the issues that come out of these meetings are quite amazing Bernard said. Firstly the meetings need to be conducted away from the family environment, away from the family home. The idea of telling the kids at the Christmas lunch what’s going on but that’s no good. Bernard usually has a formal agenda and the meetings held in Bernard’s boardroom and only with the bloodline. Mum and Dad and the kids. No in-laws - no daugher-in-laws, no son-in-laws, no cousins, no grandparents, just the people who are going to be directly affected by the decisions being made. And of course these meetings answer the two problems ‘we don’t know what’s happening and we don’t know what to do with the money’. At these meetings they find out what is going to happen and they meet the advisors. So its a win win situation.

Bernard then gave a few example stories of families with problems and how they solved them. Bernard also spoke about sibling rivalry and gave us examples of family disputes. He also advised us to check what we have in our possession as we may throw out something valuable and he gave examples of this.

Finally, Bernard said just to prove that he is not always in the 18th and 19th centuries he also spoke about the Digital Age. When we do our wills we should list all our online bank accounts, list all our user names and passwords and login information (Bernard said don’t ask him where to store it safely) because the new word is Digital Estate Planning. We must have a streamlined process because Facebook, gmail, google - all of them - you have to have certain forms for people to access them and its a big deal. Once you die executors can’t get access to it and it just goes on and on and its just awful Bernard said. One bit of tax planning is to not have your domain name in your own name. Put it in your company name as companies never die. These are things that are often overlooked.

Bernard then fielded questions from the audience and at the end of the session President Barry presented Bernard with the Club Tie in appreciation for his talk and then closed the meeting.

19 February to 4 March 2016 - (14 Nights)

Christmas is approaching & as with previous years Brighton Rotary is once again organising a Children’s Christmas Party.

This year will be a little different.

One of Santa’s helpers is a magician and he is coming along to show the children a trick or two - so we’re in for some surprises.

This year it will be held at 6pm on Thursday the 17th of December 2015.

If you have children &/or grandchildren under 16 years of age, then we’d love to have them come along on the evening & enjoy the fun.

Please email Stephen with their names, ages & gender by Tuesday 8 December - so that we may organise the venue and presents.

As with previous years, we encourage your children/grandchildren to bring a near-new pre-loved toy wrapped to be given to charity.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to email or call Stephen. He will make announcements about the Party on Thursday evening’s building up to the 17th.

It promises to be a fun night, so don’t miss the opportunity to bring along your kids and grandkids.

res. Barry thanked Chairman Norm Thomas and welcomed everyone to the Rotary Club of Brighton, the only place to be on a wet Thursday evening.

Barry welcomed the special guests for the evening.

On the top table we had our guest speaker Bernard McMenamin who had kindly agreed to be our guest speaker on very short notice. Bernard came highly recommended to Barry by good friend, Kerry Kornhauser and he spoke to us about Estate Planning. Barry thanked Bernard for coming.

Barry said that at the previous meeting our guest speaker was Errol Driver who spoke to the club about the “Funny things that happened after he left the airfield!”. Errol shared with us stories about his career in aviation including doing visual surveillance flights while serving in the Army during the Vietnam war. Barry said that It is only when you hear stories from men like Errol that he realised just how lucky he was to have been born when he was and more importantly how simple and safe a life he had led in comparison.

On the previous weekend, PP Ivan Vojlay kindly organised a Hole-In-One celebratory luncheon for Graeme Wallace. Barry congratulated Graeme.

P Greg Biggin: Greg spoke about the club Christmas Lunch on 6 December at Victoria Golf Club and said although the numbers are increasing he would really like to hear from more members. He forgot to mention that Max’s daughter Sarah Martin and Alan Venn would be entertaining. See page 9 for details.Dale Hoy: Dale spoke about the dental student from PNG who we are sponsoring. PP Arthur Hubbard has offered to accommodate him for a week and Dale is looking for another family to host him around 21-28 November. Please contact Dale.

James Tisdall: James spoke about the upcoming Senior Citizens lunch which we run in conjunction with the Bayside Council. The Seniors love it and James was looking forward to another great event this year. See details below left.

Norm Thomas: Norm reminded members about the Sponsors Appreciation Night on Monday 16 November which would involve committee and board members. He said it should be a great event. See highlights on page 12.

Stephen West: Stephen spoke about the Children’s Christmas Party on 17 December. He said the numbers were good so far. He still hoping that other Members will bring their kids and grandkids. There will be Santa and a magici\an. See details p4.

l Demographics of our Club: Sgt Damien thought the RC of Albert Park wouldn’t be having a speaker talking about Estate Planning last week as we were. Their average age is approx 25;

l Nic Mardling: Sgt Damien asked Nic to stop waving his box at him and put something in it to make it rattle;

l Geoff Shaw: Geoff was a no show last week after getting up at 3am to go fishing. Too tired after pulling in haul of schnapper;

l PP Arthur Hubbard: Had computer problems last week and who does he call? The Sarg! Damien said that anyone who knew him wouldn’t ask him about computers. Should have called Cameron Ward;

l Demon supporters new logo: Fined for new Melbourne Club logo released last week which is supposedly going to help them win a premiership. All demon supporters fined including Alan Jarrott;

l Phil Mellett: Was at a long lunch last Thursday and after a couple of drinks thought what do I do now - go to Rotary and have few more drinks with Des Thomas? Apparently was worried about his ride home;

l Graham Gude: Sgt Damien said did we know that Graham was the first bout on before the main boxing event last week;

l PP Bill Howley: Had left the meeting early but slipped the Sarg a few dollars as he was flying to Queenstown to play golf with Daryl Forge;

l Jeremy Hope: Sgt Damien said he was missing the previous week and asked where he was. Jeremy replied that he was at an ‘educational event’ in the city which apparently PP Alan Pinkus was envious about. Sarg fined both of them;

l All Monarchists: Prince Charles and Camilla were in Sydney and the Sarg fined all those who still believed we should continue with a monarchy;

l Any Members or guests wearing a blue & white check shirt: All fined;

l Tony Rouse: Played golf the day before last meeting, tripped over a divot on the 9th and didn’t reappear until the 19th;

l Editor Max: Made two typos in the Sarg’s notes last issue of the Bulletin - said PP Arthur Hellard (should be Hubbard) was a kiwi which upset Damien and also said that John Schmoll placed bets on 13 horses in the Cup which was really Ken Paterson;

l Anyone who won on the Cup betting;l Collingwood signed Buckley again: All Magpie supporters fined;l Max Martin: Buying a Toyota Camry next day and didn’t have any

change left for the Sarg;l Alan Jarrott: For filling the top table with his guests;l PP Ian Mence: Sarg had all his gear set up on the top table and

Ian moved it. Imagine being shunted by Ian the Sarg said. Must have thought he was in Canberra;

l John O’Connell: Wife expecting a baby in January;l Front Desk: David Gardiner was an apology and he hadn’t been a

Member for about 8 years;l John Schmoll: Sarg asked him if he was growing that moustache for

Movember. John nodded yes;l Paul O’Brien: Fined twice for being a prospective new Member and his phone rang and to avoid the fine he answered “Alan Jarrott”;l Colin Stimpson: Also prospective new Member. He arrived late during Sarg session which makes him a good Rotarian said the Sarg cynically;l Noel Padzina: Another prospective new

Member. PDG John King told the Sarg his name was Paul.

PART 25 OF THE 50 THINGS EVERY ROTARIAN SHOULD KNOW:

‘THE DISTRICT CONFERENCE’Most Rotarians have never attended a Rotary district conference. They have not experienced one of the most enjoyable and rewarding privileges of Rotary membership.

A district conference is for all club members and their spouses, not just for club officers and committee members. The purpose of a district conference is for fellowship, good fun, inspirational speakers and discussion of matters which make one’s Rotary membership more meaningful. Every person who attends a district conference finds that being a Rotarian becomes even more rewarding because of the new experiences, insights and acquaintances developed at the conference. Those who attend a conference enjoy going back, year after year.

Every one of Rotary’s more than 500 districts has a conference annually. These meetings are considered so important that the Rotary International president selects a knowledgeable Rotarian as his personal representative to attend and address each conference. The program always includes several outstanding entertainment features, interesting discussions and inspirational programs.

One of the unexpected benefits of attending a district conference is the opportunity to become better acquainted with members of one’s own club in an informal setting. Lasting friendships grow from the fellowship hours at the district conference.

IVAN’S HACKERSIVAN’S HACKERS

Last Saturday was another special day for Ivan’s Hackers at the Royal Brighton Golf Course. It was “Challenge Day”, a new event resulting from a challenge from Tino Marget. Tino’s group of Old Brightonian golfers, aka the “Brighton Brothers”, also play a weekly 9 holes of golf every Saturday morning at Brighton but hitting off earlier than the Hackers. Their group issued a challenge via Ray Street for a game against the Hackers, which was quickly accepted. The format was 2 person Ambrose over 9 holes.

The weather was perfect for golf - cool, calm, dry and partly sunny. However, unfortunately, a couple of the Brighton Brothers were late scratchings because of sickness. In the end, four teams of two represented each team, with Ray Street defecting to the Brothers, and excess Hackers Sven-Erik Bredenberg, John Carroll, Rob Foster and Richard Sarell playing with themselves.

It was a hard fought and close encounter. Both the Brighton Brothers and Ivan’s Hackers had two winning teams, and remarkably, the aggregate stroke scores were exactly the same at 161. Fittingly, a tied result!

The special individual prizes were also shared, with Tino Marget taking out the Nearest-the-Pin trophy, and Ron Stark unleashing a monster tee shot on the seventh to claim the Longest Drive trophy.

Approach-Shot-of-the-Day went to Tino Marget who nonchalantly putted in from off the green for a birdie on the second hole. Arthur Hubbard and David Lee also birdied the second, while Tino Marget and Rob Masterman birdied the fourth. However, Birdie-of-the-Day went to John Carroll and Rob Foster for their magnificent par 4 on the sixth hole.

Both teams happily partook of the usual Hacker coffees and bikkies outside the Pro Shop, with the losing pairs shouting the winning pairs. There were mutterings of a return challenge next year.

Overall, a great morning of golf, fun and fellowship. Many thanks to the Brighton Brothers and Ivan’s Hackers. Captain Bruce Crossley

PONSORS APPRECIATION EVENINGSOur third Sponsors Appreciation Evening was held on Monday evening at the Sandringham Yacht Club, approximately 40 of our sponsors attended along with Events Chairmen, some event committee members and RCB Board members.

Chairman Norm gave an official welcome and thank you to all our sponsors, followed by President Barry, who gave a brief overview of where the sponsor dollars go towards assisting our charitable funding. President elect Dale Hoy also gave a brief heads up on how the sponsors will benefit from our active website and social media.

A number of sponsors indicated how impressed they were with the good work we carry out for the community and that they were pleased to be part of the process.

The sponsors were also chuffed that we ran a cocktail party specially for then as our way of saying thanks and all seem to have enjoyed a relaxed night of networking with each other and our members.

As usual the atmosphere and the standard of food and drink at the yacht club added to a successful evening.
