August-September has seen a number of occasions when we have enjoyed the

company of parents.

Some of you were at the India Pilgrimage fundraising dinner on last Saturday night – a wonderful occasion with families of more than one generation generously supporting children in Nagpur. Our Deputy Curriculum Rita Shepherd, who is the founder of the St. Dominic’s end of this mission, gave a talk at the dinner, which challenged us to an appreciation of the life of children and youth who must fend for themselves in dangerous situations and who are given new hope by the work of Dominican Fr. Herald D’Souza OP and his wonderful team in Nagpur. In December our Year 11 Pilgrims, supported by staff, will travel to a world which has little in common with theirs and make friends while learning so much from the people they will meet.

Year 8 2019 OrientationBy the time this Bulletin comes home the first of two Year 8 Orientation Days will have taken place and the students enrolled for 2019 will have had a taste of their new school and met some of their new class mates. These students come from 24 different schools across the metropolitan area. This year we will also orient the 2019 Year 7s who will be coming in to St. Dominic’s with their parents on September 19. It is always a great pleasure and privilege to welcome our new families. Special thanks to Year 8 Coordinator Ali McPeake and the Year 8 Class Teachers for their preparation.

Friday Night’s Awareness Raising SeminarIn the photo below a group of senior students from St. Dominic’s and Blackfriars are pictured at a seminar to raise awareness about the issue of domestic violence in our society, here in Australia. Organised by Lily Bentley Head Prefect and helped by the Prefects of St. Dominic’s and Blackfriars, the gathering was fortunate to have input from parent Samantha Napoli who has worked in this area, and from a group of three young men from Zhara Quest which raises funds for those affected by domestic violence through the Zhara Foundation. These young men were just about to head off to New Guinea where they have been sponsored to walk the Kokoda Trail. The topic of domestic violence is a difficult one for youth and one which was handled sensitively and yet frankly by those presenting.

Preparing for 2019We would like to have an accurate picture of class numbers for 2019. If your daughter will not be returning to St. Dominic’s next year you are asked to let me know in writing as well as completing the reply slip in today’s Bulletin.

In and around the classrooms:

We were so very proud of our Reception Class at last week’s Friday Morning Mass. Their focus and

participation was outstanding. There were a few tears from parents too! Miss Jane Delloso’s calming reassurance with the girls was certainly visible and they followed her lead well. Father David spoke very highly of the girls’ reverence and enthusiasm. The mass was a special celebration of their fathers and we were fortunate to have many of them be able to stay for morning tea. We hope all our dads, stepfathers and special father figures had a good day on Sunday. Even with the challenges of being a parent, I hope you were able to reflect on the richness and wonder that your daughter/s bring to your life.

On Tuesday the 21st of August Sari, An, Willow and I went to a debate at Pembroke School. It was the last debate for the season. The topic was ‘whether students should be weighed at school.‘ We were the Affirmative team and won the debate. I loved it. Everyone in the team did so well, not only this debate but the whole season. Good job girls. We are thankful for all the support Mrs Kennedy

has given us. - Olivia Year 6

Barker Character CreationsYear 5 Kindy Visit On the 30th of August the Year 5s walked to Barker Kindergarten full of excitement to teach the little children new skills. As the kindy class were learning about the fictional character ‘’Grug’’, the Year 5s paired up with a buddy to paint Grug on a rock and, using a blank booklet, create a Grug story. There were many different stories created including ‘’Grug and the fairy’’ and “Grug learns to dance”. After finishing the activities, we played with our buddies on the playground, read them stories, and even watched puppet shows directed by some of the Year 5 students. After a great session the we sadly headed back to school racing trying to beat the rain.

Music Incursion

“Music is Fun”Last Wednesday our primary students were treated to an energetic and fun filled concert presented by the “Music is

Fun” band. Girls from Reception to Year 6 had the opportunity to become superheroes, purple people eaters, guitarists in a rock band and Latino percussionists just to name a few. It was wonderful seeing the girls actively engaged in such a vast repertoire of songs from different

genres. A shout out must go to our very own Popstar Ms. Pauley for having a positive growth mindset, singing on stage! Well done Ms. Pauley!

Year 9 RetreatThe Year 9 Retreat which took place on August 27, was held at the Bethany Centre, set in the grounds of the historic St Joseph’s Convent, Kensington. The program focussed on different aspects of self, the pressures of living up to unrealistic standards, and the influence of the media. For this activity, students used masks to respond to questions using words, phrases or symbols. Students were also given the opportunity to write positive affirmations on each other’s masks.

The nature of relationships was explored through a variety of activities. Students were asked to reflect independently, to work collaboratively in small groups, and to share with the whole year level.

Wisdom and insights shared both within the smaller groups and among the whole year level showed depth of thought and authenticity.

To f in i sh the s e s s ion on relationships students selected a coloured circle, and using words,

phrases and symbols created a mandala which reflected values that build and support positive and healthy relationships.

Thanks to all the Year 9 teachers and students who participated and contributed so positively to discussions. A special thanks to Mrs Meyer whose expertise always provides students with valuable insights into human relations.
