People: That during His Whole Life on earth, but especially at the end, Christ sustained in body and soul the Wrath of God against the sin of the whole human race. Leader: Why did He suffer "under Pontius Pilate" as judge? People: So that He, though innocent, might be condemned by an earthly judge, and so free us from the severe judgment of God that was to fall on us. Leader: Is it significant that He was "crucified" instead of dying some other way? People: Yes. By this I am convinced that He shouldered the curse which lay on me, since death by crucifixion was cursed by God. All: Praise God for his mercy! *PRAYER OF INVOCATION To honor and praise You, O God, we come in gratitude and love. With great joy and amazement, we remember the victory of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Therefore, we raise our voices in praise and thanksgiving for Your incomparable gift of love revealed in Christ’s resurrection. Amen. *PRAISE HYMN “Amazing Grace! How Sweet the Sound” 278 [R] *PRAYER OF CONFESSION Lord Jesus Christ You suffered the Wrath of God. You died for me. I deserved that punishment. Forgive me for an attitude that tells the world “I’m owed something” when I deserve nothing. Amen. *ASSURANCE OF PARDON Leader: Jesus gave the most extravagant gift of all — the offering of himself for us. Through this selfless gift, we are set free, and our sins are forgiven. People: Thanks be to God!
