Last Friday night I was very proud to attend the Art Show at the Thirroul Seaside Festival where our Hospitality students under the leadership of teacher Ms Gabe Constable, catered for the hundreds of guests. Throughout the night I accepted the many compliments and positive comments from the patrons. Our students were fine representatives of Bulli High School and did an amazing and very professional job.

On Saturday evening I attended the 150 Years Celebration Dinner for Austinmer Public School. It was a wonderful celebration of a school that is obviously held in such high esteem by its community.

E-Reader An e-news has been sent out outlining how students can access the Bulli High School e-reader facility via our school library. See the library article for more details. Interim Reports Interim Reports (Years 7 – 11) will be issued to students in Week 2 of next term. These reports are designed to give parents an indication of how their child is progressing. Parent Teacher Nights are later in Term 2 which is when more detailed Semester 1 reports will be issued. Year 12 mid-course reports will be issued to students in Week 3.

Uniform Our community support for the high standard of uniform at Bulli High School is very strong. I continue to receive very positive feedback from our local community. To ensure the standard remains high, we ask that students present every day in full school uniform including black shoes and white socks, bar Wednesday when junior students may wear their sports shoes with their sports uniform. Senior students do not attend sport and hence are expected to wear their black shoes and white socks every day. Students who are unable to wear full school uniform, are expected to bring a note of explanation. Thank you to all parents who have responded with feedback on the proposed tunic for the junior girls. A decision will be made early next term. School Musical We look forward to seeing many families at the school musical early next term. The flyer is attached. Tickets will be available at the door each night. Easter Eggstavaganza Fundraiser Wow, what a response. A total of $3400 was raised by our school community. A big thank you to everyone who bought or sold tickets or donated an Easter egg to our big fundraiser. This is a great fun way to raise funds which go to enhance student learning and facilities. Well done to the PDHPE faculty, in particular Ms O’Connell, and the administration staff who organised and coordinated this fun event and the MC of The hat parade and prize draw, Mr Delaney. This is a highlight and a lot of fun with the whole school getting into the spirit. The money will go to further improving student facilities. A list of prize-winners is later in the newsletter. Cross Country Carnival Despite the poor weather in the lead-up, the carnival went ahead and was a great success. Lateness Students are to be at school in time to be in class by 8.50 am each and every day. Being punctual is an important life skill. Lateness to school results in interrupted teaching and learning. Any student arriving late to school must provide a letter from a parent explaining why. Three unexplained or unacceptable late starts will result in a detention being issued and may result in a Formal Caution being issued. Parent support is needed in ensuring students are dropped off at school of a morning, with time to get to class.

Seacliff CoS Leadership Program The Seacliff CoS Leadership Program continues. This week saw the teams from the 9 partner schools work with their Bulli High School leaders to finalise their projects. This is student leadership in action! Term 2 Monday, April 24 is a School development Day (staff only). All teachers and School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs) will attend Curriculum Network Illawarra (CNI) events which are held in high schools from Kiama to Bulli. Each curriculum area meets to engage in professional learning specific to their subject areas. This day is a great example of our high schools working together to stay up to date with curriculum changes and to share information and teaching strategies which benefit our teachers and students. This organisation is unique to the Illawarra and is the envy of many other schools. Our Administration office will be closed as our office staff will be attending at SASS day at the Nan Tien Temple. Tuesday, April 25: ANZAC Day Public Holiday Wednesday, April 26: All students return for Term 2 Have a great and safe holiday

Deputy Principal’s News Lots of great things happened again this term! I would

like to thanks families who hosted one of our Japanese

students. This is always a fun experience.

The graph shows how the House points are going for

the year. Congratulations to everyone who was

involved in activities both inside and outside school this

term. There are less than 20 points separating 1st and

2nd. Remember you can earn points for things you do in

your community as well so let us know!

Personal Best at Bulli High School

Tyson Bricknell in Year 10 shaved his very long curly locks this week for a great cause. He wanted to raise money to

help Neve, a friend of Tyson’s family. Neve is 6 years old with a rare brain tumour and needs treatment in the USA.

The treatment is not available in Australia and the family will need to stay there for 4 months. Tyson is in Year 10

He also plays for the school chess team and represented the school in the recent Opens State Basketball Knock

Out! Tyson plays AFL on the weekends for Northern District Tigers as Centre Half Back. Tyson is working towards

his Silver Duke of Edinburgh.

Science Term 1 has now finished and we have covered a lot of course content. Students from Years 7-10 will have their

Semester One examinations next term and should spend time reading through their notes and ensuring that they

have the necessary knowledge and understanding of the coursework. Science examination dates are shown below:

Year 10 – May 23rd

Year 9 – May 30th

Year 8 – June 1st

Year 7 – 7P – May 30th; 7D, 7R & 7S – June 1st; 7E & 7I – June 2nd

Students should take the opportunity during the holidays to check their pencil cases and restock with the necessary

pens, pencils and rulers so that they are fully prepared for Term 2.

Year 12 have received their Mid-course examination results and must now work to ensure that any areas of

weakness are strengthened by targeted revision and consolidation. The students will have received extensive

feedback on where marks were lost and how they can work towards improvement. This needs to be done straight

away so that they can begin Term 2 knowing that all previous coursework is well understood and are ready to

embark on a new section of the syllabus. Practising past HSC questions will also allow students to familiarise

themselves with the types of questions they could encounter as well as refining their examination technique when

constructing answers to the extended responses.

Year 11 also have various assessment items scheduled for Term 2. They must organise their time effectively and

that includes the 2 week break in order to ensure that all tasks are completed to the highest standard.

their devices in a range of differentiated ways to enhance their learning, including – engaging in curriculum

communications via their online classroom, producing folio work and presentations, recording & evaluating their

progress through the use of photography & video, accessing our OnGuard online safety package & utilising a range

of Google apps to plan, organise & manage their time.

Year 9 Metals and Automotive

Great to see the class learning how things work reverse engineering.…..the test will be putting them back together

again!

Year 10 Metals and Automotive

It’s great to see the workshop stool projects progressing nicely. We’re certainly sure that if any students don’t want

to take these home, we can make good use of them!

Year 11 Design & Technology

With projects due for completion midway through Term 2 it’s exciting to see such a range of innovative adaptions

of the ‘Memorabilia’ design brief. We can’t wait to see the finished projects!

PDHPE – BYOD section

During Term 2, Year 7 will be exploring the concept of adolescence and change. This will require students to

research the role that hormones play in the changes that occur during puberty. Other activities will include

interactive games and creating flow charts to show the cyclic nature of some of the body’s processes.

Year 8 will be researching the effects of alcohol and cannabis. Students will use their devices to research up to date

information and collaborate with others to analyse the effects of drug use on the individual and the community.

Students will also explore health promotion campaigns that aim to reduce the risk of harm for young people

relating to alcohol and cannabis.

Biathlon

Congratulations and well done to all students who demonstrated persistence and dedication in completing their

Year 10 Biathlon Assessment Task this term. Many students displayed eagerness, energy and commitment

throughout the course during the term and should be proud of their efforts and achievement.

Postponed Knockout Sport/Zone Trials

Please be aware that many knockout sport games and trials were postponed this term due to unfavourable

weather conditions which has meant some games will need to be rescheduled to the beginning of Term 2. Students

will need to listen carefully to announcements at assemblies and during roll call to ensure they do not miss any

required information.

Bulli HS Year 5 Discovery Day On Thursday 23rd March, Bulli HS played host to over 300 Year 5 students and their teachers from across the Seacliff Community of Schools. The students took part in our Discovery Day that allowed them to experience some of the curriculum learning experiences we provide. Scratch coding, theatre sports, drama, languages, science and physical education were only a few of the subjects that were on offer. Our guests were helped by 7E students who acted as guides. Also, a number of Year 10 students took on the role of laboratory assistants in the Forensic Frenzy workshops. The success of the day was very much due to the hard work of the BHS teachers who took each of the workshops. Therefore, a huge thanks goes to Ms Canvin, Mrs Swain, Mrs Whittaker, Ms Schilbe, Ms Evans, Ms Wilson, Mrs Treglown, Mr Delaney, Mr Craigen, Mr Colquhoun, Mr Macnab, Mr James, Ms Forrest, Mr Cabassi and Mr Trenaman for their time and effort. As you can see from the smiles on Year 5 students’ faces and their excitement in being able to use our specialised classrooms, it was obvious that everyone had a great time.

Spellodrome As mentioned in our previous newsletter, Bulli HS has signed up to Spellodrome - an online tool that helps students develop critical spelling awareness. At the beginning of Term 2, all students in Years 7 - 10 will receive their user names and passwords. This will allow them to access a wide range of spelling activities, games and challenges based on word lists generated by their various class teachers. Spellodrome can be accessed at home and at school on any computer or tablet device. As a parent/ caregiver, you can also sign up to receive weekly reports on your child’s progress. Information on how to register for a free Parent Console will be provided in the next newsletter. A busy term in English It is hard to believe that we are at the end of Term 1 already. Being such a busy term, it seems as if time has flown. We have just completed a range of assessment tasks across all years. In particular, the English faculty has been most impressed with the efforts of our Year 7 and 8 students in their recent speaking and listening assessment tasks. The quality of the speeches presented by many students was exceptional. Subsequently, Mrs Smart has organised a Year 7 Public Speaking Showcase for the morning of Friday 7th April. This event will allow two students from each class to present their speeches to the rest of Year 7. We are all looking forward to these presentations. Also, Year 9 will be sitting for their NAPLAN tests in Week 5 of Term 2. English teachers will be providing opportunities for students to become familiar with the format and demands of the Reading, Language Conventions and Writing tests in the lead up to NAPLAN. With the Stronger HSC Standards, it is important that all Year 9 students strive for excellence in this assessment. Ms Heather Gardiner Head Teacher English

Aboriginal Education

The first term of 2017 has been a time of preparation and informal gatherings for students at Bulli High School. On

Wednesday 15 March we had our annual student morning tea where Indigenous students could invite a friend to

join them in celebrating the new year. Stephanie and Jason from AIME joined the morning tea along with a number

of teachers. It was a great time for everyone to catch up and discuss future 2017 events.

SRC - Bulli Leadership team meets with Lord Mayor

On Monday April 3rd, the Bulli High School Senior Leadership team, comprising Zoe Lewis, Hamish Bell, Kara Donald,

Jake Hodgson, Maeve Couch and Jared Roberts attended the Lord Mayor’s forum with many school captains from

around the region.

The Lord Mayor quizzed them on many aspects of the life of youth in the Illawarra, seeking input on what young

people like and dislike about facilities in the Wollongong area, as well as what young people like to do and what

things in the area need improving most to meet these pursuits.

He was interested in the opinions of our leaders on many and diverse issues, including gay marriage and issues that

our young adults may be faced with as they enter the workforce and the community post-school.

The group was universal in its praise for the function and brought back many positive ideas.

Congratulations to our leaders for once again representing the school and its community so well.

Changing Attitudes towards Mental Health

Helping Someone with a Mental Illness References: https://mhfa.com.au/resources

How do I know if someone has a mental illness? Only a trained professional can diagnose someone with a mental illness. If you notice changes in a person’s mood, their behaviour, energy, habits or personality, this

may be due to a mental illness. Learn about mental illnesses and the ways people behave and what they experience. Do not ignore symptoms that you notice or assume they will go away. Each individual is different and not everyone will behave the same way or experience the same things.

How do I talk to someone about mental illness? Give the person opportunities to talk Speak openly and honestly about your concerns. Choose your time to talk Choose a space you both feel comfortable where there will be no interruptions, when you are both sober and in a calm frame of mind. Use ‘I’ statements such as ‘I have noticed....and feel concerned’ rather than ‘you’ statements. Let the person know you are concerned about them and are willing to help. Respect how the person interprets their symptoms. Encourage them to discuss how they are feeling with someone else if they can’t talk to you.

How can I be supportive?

Treat the person with respect and dignity Do not blame the person for their illness Offer consistent emotional support and understanding Be a good listener Give the person hope for recovery Only provide accurate and information.

What doesn’t help? Telling them to ‘snap out of it’ or ‘get over it’ Being hostile or sarcastic Being over-involved or over-protective Nagging and Trivialising a person’s experience Dismissing the person’s feelings Trying to cure the person or come up with answers to their problems.

Getting professional help? Ask the person if they need help to manage how they are feeling. Encouraging them to see their GP or School Counsellor is a good place to start.

What if the person doesn’t want help? Find out if there are any specific reasons why they do not want to seek help. This may be because of beliefs or worry about seeking help. Respect the person’s right not to seek help unless you believe they are at risk of harming themselves or others. This article is general information only, if you are concerned about your or someone else’s mental health, talk

to your General Practitioner (GP) or School Counsellor. Useful Resources / Contacts: Mental Health Line 1800011511 Kids Helpline 1800551800
