Driveway Repairs CompletedThe recent construction work in the front driveway of the

school to repair a water leak has now been completed. We

would like to thank all families for their patience and

understanding during this time and also the staff on the school

buses who ensured the children were kept safe during the

morning and afternoon travel times.

Bakers Delight Tamworth Square

Trish Carr who is the Assistant Principal of the Junior School

has recently taken on a short term role as Assistant Principal

Learning and Support based at Hillvue Public School. In her

absence, Vanessa Flett will be relieving in this role. Trish will

return to Bullimbal at the start of Term 2.

Bakers Delight City Square has once again generously

donated money to the students of Bullimbal School

through their Doughraiser Program. Each purchase from

the Bakers Delight store in Peel Street results in a

donation being made to our school. We encourage you to

support this locally owned business and mention Bullimbal

School when making your purchases.

Staff changes at Bullimbal

Playground ConsultationRecently the school has enlisted the help of a local

landscaping company to design some new and exciting

upgrades to the existing playground areas. The plan includes

flexible play decks, sensory wheelchair accessible pathways,

musical instruments, sand pits, mud kitchens, water play

area, chalkboards, dry creek beds and fitness/gym

equipment. The upgrade will also include the existing bike

track area to have community signs to assist students in

learning safety road rules. We welcome your feedback on

these plans and have extended this consultation to local

occupational and physiotherapists to ensure that we are

catering for the needs of all students.

P&C UpdateEarlier this year the P&C sent home a survey to families. All responses were placed into a draw to receive a $50 voucher to the Tamworth Hotel. This draw took place at the Family Assembly on 1st March. The winner

of the $50 voucher was Amanda Dufty. Congratulations Amanda and thank you to everyone who contributed. A reminder that the Easter raffle is coming up. The P&C are asking for Easter egg donations to put towards prizes. These donations can be left with the friendly office staff at school and raffle tickets will go home with students in the near future. The Easter raffle will be drawn at the Family assembly on the last

day of Term 1. The next P&C meeting will be on Tuesday 12th March. All welcome.

Communication CampThe countdown is on as we approach the inaugural running of our communication camp for students and families. This camp is designed to provide our students and their families and support staff an opportunity work on skills in using a robust comprehensive Augmentative and Alternative Communication system such as PODD (printed book and iPad) or Proloquo2Go on the iPad. This camp will be an important step for students as they work towards becoming autonomous communicators. A reminder the camp will take place on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 April at Bullimbal. Please add this important event to your diaries as we would like to see as many families come along as possible. Here’s what one parent of a child who attended a similar camp has said about the experience: It’s very difficult summarising the benefits and outcomes of AAC camps, but I know for my daughter the opportunity to be surrounded by both other AAC users and by speech therapists who’s sole reason for being there is to see her extend herself and her communication potential for an intensive period has always been amazing. My daughter faces some challenges around her communication but the teams at camp have always been respectful of her choices and have guided her to push her self imposed boundaries because they knew she was capable of more. Many times her fear of making an error or her lack of confidence in herself as a communicator gets in the way, but an AAC camp gets her through and past this.

Jane Farrall

Meet our presenters: over the next few newsletters we will introduce you to our three presenters for this camp. As previously mentioned we will have two Speech Pathologists, Jane Farrall and Helen Tainsh, and one Occupational Therapist, Fiona Beauchamp. This week we will focus on Jane Farrall. Jane is a speech pathologist and special educator passionate about literacy, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and Assistive Technology. With over 20 years of experience in the disability and assistive technology field she has lots of practical experience working with people with a range of abilities. She also has extensive practical experience in both Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and in teaching children and adults with disabilities to acquire literacy. Jane has worked as a school and adult service based therapist and literacy teacher. She has also worked as an assistive technology specialist at both ComTEC and at Spectronics and is currently working as an independent consultant in literacy, AAC and Assistive Technology. Jane has completed a Masters in Special Education focusing on literacy acquisition in children and adults without speech. She is a former Chairperson of AGOSCI (Australian Group on Severe Communication Impairment) and is the founder and organiser of the Big Mouth Camp, a camp for school aged students using speech generating devices and their families.
