Blandon, how did you get into the bully game or what got you started?

I fell in love with the Pit Bull when I was in HS but didn't get my first registered dog until I got home from the military in 2001. By 2003 I was known as Smoke Hole Kennels in my local area, but wasn't until 2005 when it all really started for me. Walked in to the Houston Bully Show and it was over after that, I knew I was home. Been showing and breeding bullies ever since.

What do you enjoy the most about being a bully breeder?

First of all it's the love of the breed itself; just being around such an amazing breed is what I enjoy. Then I would have to say the shows, I'm what I call a “Ring Freak” I get a rush from being in the ring performing with my dog. Stacking next to good look-ing dogs from across the country or state, your dog puts on a great performance as you practiced countless hours. Then the judge presents you with that blue ribbon or trophy, it's a very satisfying moment. Then I would have to say seeing dogs you have produced with their loving homes and hearing all the great stories of how much they love their family member.....I guess I just enjoy every part of the aspect of showing and breeding.

Even cleaning kennels daily??Actually that’s one of my favorites, being in the kennel just me and the dogs, it’s my daily “thinking time”, once again I just feel at home with the dogs. Truly man’s best friend, no doubt about it.

Speaking of your kennel, tell us a little bit about this facility you have here at Lil Man Bullies.

MAN! That thing is our pride and joy next to our dogs. It’s an 900 sq. ft. indoor climate controlled facility. We have two 4X4 puppy area’s equipped with automatic feeders and fresh water, eight large AKC kennels for our adults also equipped with feed-ers and fresh water. A drain that runs behind all the large ken-nels that runs underground to a septic tank for proper sanita-tion. Deep sink for washing pups and large counter tops for any work or inspection of dogs. Outside the kennel is a concrete slab with a wash bay for washing up dirty dogs before coming into the kennels, also draining underground to the septic. We invite anyone doing business with us or wanting to check out the set up to come on out.

You have been known as Smoke Hole Kennels for years but now fall under the name Lil Man Bullies....

how did that change come about? The name Lil Man Bullies came about as a tribute to my son Christian Shaffer, or Lil Man as we all called him. September 22, 2009 he was diagnosed with an extremely rare brain stem tumor, that was the day our lives changed. After a long 15 month battle with an aggressive radiation treatments and experimental medi-cines Christian lost this his battle to this horrible disease.

December 19, 2010 Lil Man’s fight was over and he earned his “angel wings”. On what would have been his 13th birthday I took on the name Lil Man Bullies and launched the site in his honor. It’s my way of giving a little back to my son that taught me so much during those 15 months. Love you Christian!!

I hear you are looking to put on a charity show in December?

Well once again our goal is not only to produce the best bully possible but to give back to those who helped us along the way. The show in December will be a “Brain Tumor Aware-ness Show” where all profits will be donated to the Chris-tian Shaffer foundation for brain tumor research at Texas Children’s Hospital. Goal is to make it an annual event the weekend of Lil Man’s passing every year. It will be a BBCR (Bull Breed Coalition Registry) sponsored event.

Where do you see Lil Man Bullies in the next 5 years?

Well our plan is to make our mark in the bully game as well as in our community educating people about this amazing breed and breaking the stereo types that go along with them. We have some pretty serious breeding’s taking place this year and years to follow. I have also recently been chosen to become a judge in the BBCR so plan on doing big things with them as well in the future.

Who do you credit your success to?First of I have to give thanks to the man above for giving us the opportunities to be a breeder and understand the breed so well. My son Christian for reminding me that you have to fight for what you believe in and love. My family for bearing with me and all these dogs for so long, thanks for your sup-port no matter if you saw my vision or not. The breeders out there that gave me advice and never got tired of my questions, Grant Garland (Garland Kennels), Steve Yuebanks (Southern Empire Bullys), Amy Krogman (Blue Rock Bullies), just to name a few. Chris Ngo for helping me with my networking and marketing as well as Alex Arauz and Adam Nelson at Fat Donkey Enterprises. Can’t leave out Bully Ink Magazine for giving Lil Man Bullies the opportunity to share our story.

Anything else you want to share with us?Just want to challenge all the breeders out there to remember what got them started....the love of the breed, not the money, not the recognition, not the fame. Hold yourself true to the breed and do quality breeding’s that will bring a more cor-rect bully and taking the competition to the next level.....the RIGHT WAY! Do good business and never forget we are all in this fight together. “Big thanks to Jay Pierce and Megan Jasek for all your hard work and efforts! You both will always have a place here at Lil Man Bullies!”Thanks again Bully Ink for giving us this chance and we will SEE YOU AT THE SHOW!!

Though The Eyes of A BreederBy: Daves Bullies

Where are we going to end up with these Bullies? In my opinion if we don’t come together soon, I believe this will all be just something we all sit around and talk about of what we all used to do…Whether some claim this as a hobby and others claim to be a business, we are all doing the same thing BREEDING.

I have sat back and watched so many complain about flaws, and bulldog looks, blaming what everyone calls (newbie’s) for breeding these flawed dogs or this and that..Don’t you think we should be blaming our-selves, for not reaching out and helping and teaching?

Why are so many complaing about dogs with flaws like they have never produced or had a dog with a flaw..Us as experienced breeders are the ones that should teach and help the ones that don’t know.We as respect-ful and responsible breeders shouldn’t hate on another man’s kennel or dogs or breedings, we were their once too…

Is it that we are ashamed that we will be called shirt tail riders? Well I was taught by one of the best in the bully community, Bill Lyvers from Bill & Thois Blue Bullies.

And yes I have kinked tail dogs on my yard, but with the help and being taught I know how to correct things and still get the look I want.We need to swallow pride sometimes and admit we don’t know every-thing, everyday is a learning process…We have got to come together or the bully community will fall apart.

We all know that there are some bad breeders, and yes they give false info., Just like on the dogs do your home work and get with the right mentor for the right info, there is some still out their…like Bill, Mello from Gettumbois, or Gerald from Twysted Metal, or myself.

I will be the first to say I don’t know it all, I’m not the best breeder, nor do I have the best dogs...but I will be the first to help and when I come across something I don’t know you can bank on it that I will get you the info and it will be correct, I have had a lot of help and don’t mine returning it to anyone else that is willing to learn..We have got to stop hating, whether it be hate, jealousy, greed or whatever, we got to start helping and stop complaining..Like I said before just think how much better and farther we would and could be with the breed if we spent as much time helping as we do complaining…UNITE!!!Let the Bully Breed Survive, this is the only way is to UNITE.

There are a lot of breeders that are into shows, and getting the points for the dogs to become champions, some are just into fun shows, and some are not into shows at all... I see a lot of fighting over shows whether its about the wrong dog got picked, the judges showing favoritism or who you know is why that person one( politics) is what it’s being called.

I have different thoughts on this subject, One judges are judges for a reason, Usually before a show there are banners about the upcoming show with the judges name on it so find out what that judge looks for and get your dog ready, As far as a dog winning that should not have again just like a pro fight boxing…or the ufc its in the judges hands…What ever happened to it being about just getting the dogs out showing what ya got and chopping it up with old and new friends, just having fun?

We all have pride and confidence in our dogs, but never go to a show expecting to win.. Just relax and have fun show off what you got enjoy time with the dogs and friends.

Just remember it takes a lot of time hard work and money throwing a show, If you don’t win don’t be so quick to bash the show, the host or the judges, take a moment and get with the judge to see what you may need to work on and let that fire you up to strive to be better at the next show..

Look I am just a breeder that is sharing some thoughts and views with you that I have used, yes I may be disliked by a few but I am respected by so many and I have made it a long way in the bully community.. I hide nothing and I keep it honest.

I believe in keeping it this way and coming together we can carry this breed along way….
