April showers bring May flowers We have all head the idiom “April showers bring May flowers.” It is true in the world of nature, but is it true in the church? In this life we all experience both sunshine and rain. Jesus said in Matthew 5:45 that the Father “makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” And in John 16:33 He literally said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Certainly we all have trouble with trouble, but it is possible that problems may actually give us a unique opportunity to grow closer to and become more like Christ. Problems cause fight or flight. Fight is to stand up for what you believe and remain firmly planted in your faith. Flight is to choose the easiest path through the rain, no matter if it is good or bad.

In each life a little rain must fall. Will you stand tall and firm in the Lord or will you run in fear? For after the rain will come the sun. Have patience, for behind every cloud the sun is shining! Coming next month... How old did you turn at your last birthday? Well, we turned 49! (The United Methodist Church that is… with Methodism being 281 years old.) So what about the church as a whole? The concept of “the church”? How old is it? The beginning of the church happened on the Day of Pentecost when “there came a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind” and a flame “rested on each” of the disciples. Then they “began to speak in other languages.” (Acts 2:1-4) On June 4th we will celebrate the birth of the church, the arrival of the Holy Spirit, and the continued guidance and presence of God in our lives. The Purpose of United Methodist Women

The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is:

• To know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ.

• To develop a creative supportive fellowship.

• To expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

Upcoming Events

May 2nd at 9:30am Lydia Circle May 9th at 9:00am Sewing Circle May 11th at 7:00pm Lydia Circle May 13th at 9:00am Mustard Seed May 25th at 1:00pm UMW

As members of the UMW, we can take advantage of Mission in Action Days with other UMW's throughout the state or the District Spiritual Growth Retreat. The theme of Homelessness was the topic of the Mission in Action Day. The program focused on how different communities are addressing the issue of homelessness, and how faith communities are involved. We had an update on how Tiny Homes have been built and are being utilized in Madison. It was a very informative day. Our next meeting is Thursday, May 25th, at 1:00 p.m. Caroline Kamps will lead us with a program entitled "Mothers in Action". Dessert will be served by Carol Kaderly, and Joanne Ten Eyke. You do not need to be a member of our church to join us. Bring a friend.

Attention Mustard Seed! Our meeting date for May will be on the FIRST Saturday of the month, May 6th. This will open up the Mother's Day weekend to make other plans. Our study will be on Bathsheba the bathing beauty. See you on the 6th at 9:00!

Read It and Reap Discussion for May

“Americah: A Novel” by E R Frank will the center of our discussion when Read It and Reap meet on Thursday, May 11th. Americah is a 15 year old boy who has fallen between the cracks of society. Told in fragments which intertwine and interrelate, Americah tries to explain his tortured existence of feeling like no one who is nowhere. Our library has both this book and the movie (with Rosie O’Donnell, Ruby Dee, and Philip Johnson) available. All women of the church are invited to join us as we talk about a situation few of us has experienced...thank you, God. We will meet at 7 pm at the Friederich’s… please join us!

May Gathering of the Lydia Circle

How Inclusive Should the Church Be? Humm.... In his letter to the Galatian Christians, Paul sets before all Christians across the ages an understanding for freedom and equality in Christ. Join us on Tuesday, May 2nd, at 9:30 am at the home of Bernice Swartz for a morning of laughter, feasting, and study as Janice leads us on a journey through Galatians 3:23-29. All women of the church are invited to join us...study books are available by contacting Janice or Mary. Hope to see you then.

What’s the Fuss about Blood Pressure

Blood pressure (BP) has historically been known as a “silent killer” as there usually are no symptoms to clue a

person in to the problem and is linked to heart issues, kidney disease, stroke and other vascular problems.

There are two numbers that are noted on the BP reading. The higher number is known as the systolic pressure.

This is the reading when the heart beats. As the heart contracts, it pushes blood through the arteries to the rest of

the body. This force creates pressure on the artery walls and a normal reading is at 120 mg or lower.

Pre-hypertension, or borderline high BP are those with readings between 120-139 mg, and increases the risk of

developing heart disease. Hypertension is defined as repeated blood pressures at 140 mg or above and puts a

person at significant risk of developing cardiac problems.

Diastolic BP is the bottom number and indicates the pressure in the arteries when the heart rests between beats.

It is the time when the heart fills with blood and receives oxygen. Normal readings are 80 mg or lower while

readings between 80-89 mg indicate prehypertension and those readings of 90 mg or greater indicate

hypertension.

Some people monitor BP at home, as they may have a “white coat syndrome”. This is simply when the patient

reacts stressfully to a doctor’s visit. Checking BP at home collects a series of readings that helps your medical

provider get a more accurate listing of BPs to guide the professional in prescribing the most appropriate course of

treatment. If you monitor BPs at home try to take readings at the same time of the day and take a couple of

readings that are a minute apart. Some tips to getting the lowest reading possible include: having the cuff on

bare arm only, supporting the arm at heart level, keeping the feet flat on the floor, resting the back against the

chair, refraining from talking and emptying the bladder prior to doing the reading. Write down the readings and

take them to your doctor visits. Basically, know your numbers…at least the range that your numbers generally

fall within. Having one elevated reading does not confirm hypertension but a trend upwards or repeated elevated

readings are worthy of informing your medical provider. Then follow the prescribed medical regime.

Keep in mind that some factors causing hypertension are things that you can change and some things that are not

within your control. Those causative factors that cannot be changed include: race, gender, genetics, and age.

Those issues that you have control over include: weight, exercise, stress control, and diet. Maintain a healthy

weight, exercise regularly and practice a program of stress reduction. Dietary issues that may contribute to

elevated BP involve a large intake of caffeine or salt. Salt tends to cause an increase in blood volume as it holds

fluids in the body. A person may experience swelling in the hands or feet, indicating this increased blood

volume. Weighing yourself daily shows fluid retention. This fluid retention will likely drive up blood pressure,

precipitate kidney failure or increase the risk of congestive heart failure. The fluid can be held in the tissues

around the heart so this makes the heart work harder and can eventually lead to that congestive heart failure.

Don’t be concerned with one lone elevated reading. Then, alter those contributing factors that you CAN alter and

follow your medical providers’ advice.

MONEY SAVING OPPORTUNITY Middle School

I just want to address something that probably has been pushed to the back of people’s minds in the last few months. The new parking lot was finished last

summer and there has been no new activity to attract attention.

Everyone has moved on.

However, behind the scenes, the parking lot is still not fully paid for. We have a

loan at the bank that was originally set up for $29,470 to be paid off over a period of 12 years. With some additional principal

being paid; the current balance of the loan is $24,892. If we continue to make

payments according to the original amortization schedule, we will pay the

loan off in 8 years and the total cost will be $35,208. If we pay off the total

balance today the savings will be approx. $5,000 in interest expense.

While we will probably not pay off the

total balance today or even next week or next month, the faster we pay down the loan; the more the church will save and

have to use for other things such as ministry and building

maintenance. Please prayerfully consider additional giving dedicated to paying off the parking lot loan to offset the interest

expense that will be incurred by the church.

Basic Life Support Class

Most of us do not wish to contemplate doing cardiac

resuscitation. However, we never know when we might find ourselves in a position to provide

this basic life support. Things have changed in recent years.

Giving full resuscitation

including mouth-to-mouth breathing is not as important as providing Continuous Cardiac

Compression Resuscitation (CCR) until help arrives. The

Brodhead EMS will be coming to provide a one-night class at our

church on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at 6:30 p.m.

Vicki Evenson will also provide basic information on the use of

the Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

The class is expected to last an

hour. Even our youth can benefit from this important information, so please mark your calendars

and plan to attend.

Family Promise Meeting

Tuesday, May 16th 6:30pm

Are you looking for an opportunity for your family to get involved with a local

mission? Our next host week will be June 4-11th and we are looking for some new faces to help make this a great week! We look forward to seeing you on the 16th!

Luminaria Relay For Life luminaria bags and forms are

available in the church office. Luminarias

honor every life touched by cancer. You can

dedicate them to a loved one lost, someone

currently battling, or anyone who’s

overcome it. When you attend the Relay For

Life of Green County event, you’ll see the

luminarias decorated with names and

sometimes messages to the people they’re

dedicated to. A donation of $5/bag will go

to support the work of The American Cancer

Society. On June 18th, we will have a

luminaria dedication ceremony during our

church service.

Relay For Life Team Our church's Relay For Life team is in need

of a captain/co-captain. We would like to

carry on the tradition of having a Relay For

Life team to honor and support our church

family and members that are dealing with

cancer or who have lost their battle with

cancer. The person(s) taking on the

responsibilities of a team captain/co-captain

would register the team and would work

with the team to plan their activities. The

Green County Relay For Life event will be

held at the Brodhead High School track

on Saturday, June 24th. For more

information about being a team captain or

“Cambodia is predominantly an agricultural country. Rampant

poverty and traditional methods of farming coupled with low crop

yield and crop failure due to drought/flood exacerbate food

security problems. This traditional method of farming coupled with

low yielding crop varieties resulted to food insecurity, malnutrition,

extreme poverty and cycle of debt.” -UMCOR

Golden Cross Offering

The Wisconsin Conference of the United Methodist Church is blessed to have numerous committed Health and Welfare Ministries responding in the name of Jesus Christ to persons in need. Those served are of all religions and races, from all parts of the state- Milwaukee to Superior and Green Bay to Sparta. They include the homeless, troubled children and families, the unemployed, the hungry, the ill, the disabled and the aged.

These Ministries grew out of the hearts of people within United Methodist congregations who were called todo as Jesus taught by serving others. They are ongoing expressions of the values of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, since they are the result of our call as United Methodists for inner spiritual discipline combined with outer service to others. On Sunday, May 14th our members, along with United Methodists throughout Wisconsin, will have the opportunity to support these ministries through contributions to the annual Golden Cross Offering.

“Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back.” (Luke 6:38) Fairness in the exchange of goods and services is of great importance. Establishing uniform weights and measures was written into the U.S. Constitution (Art. 1, Sec. 8) and just weights and measures are addressed on several occasions in the Bible. For example, one of God commands the Israelites, “You shall not cheat in measuring length, weight, or quantity. You shall have just balances, just weights, a just ephah [.6 bushel], and a just hin [1 gallon],” Leviticus 19:35-36. We might think that “a good measure” in Luke 6:38 means a large amount, but what follows is a recipe for giving a fair or just amount (probably of wheat). Fill the basket, press it down, shake it, make sure it is running over. The lesson is that if you expect good measure, you should give good measure. This formula works with God as well as with humans. Aren’t we taught in the Lord’s Prayer to expect forgiveness in proportion to how forgiving we are? We should expect the same to pertain to compassion, to mercy, and to generosity. According to John Wesley, this means God lets us decide how much blessing we wish to receive.

Financial News Notes-

The Measure You Give Will Be The Measure Given You

Bake Sale Donations Needed

The Brodhead Community Closet is a non-profit organization that is run totally by volunteers from our local churches. Since we have no form of income, we must do fundraising in order to pay our bills throughout the year (rent, heat, electricity). On Friday May 12, the Community Closet will be having a bake sale fundraiser at the Bank of Brodhead from 9-2. If you would be able to donate items, please bring them to the bank or contact Kim Johnson at 897-8447 or 558-1838. Please have items packaged for sale when you drop them off. And don’t forget to stop by and purchase some delicious goodies on Friday May 12 at the Bank of Brodhead!!

www.brodheadumc.org 7

And why would we wish to receive anything but the greatest measure of

God’s blessings.

How does your giving to the operations of the church and to missions appear in light of this

formula? Does your giving reflect a faith that you will receive

generously? Or does it reflect something other than complete trust

in God’s generosity?
