Read It and Reap “It’s Vacation Time...Bus to Corinth”

Ladine Housholder invites us to join five women as they journey through Greece to honor the memory of a friend and retrace the footsteps of Paul the Apostle during his ministry in Athens and Corinth. As they study I and II Corinthians, the friends discover how Paul the Apostle loved and labored as God’s change agent for quarrelsome Judeans in Corinth. They realize they too are changed. Like Paul’s vision of Jesus their experience explodes into their lives, empowering and transforming them forever. Join us after you have made this journey, on Thursday September 13th at Carol Sue Wolter’s home at 7:00pm. The book is available at church...please ask Linda or Janice or anyone else in Read It and Reap to borrow it.

Sewing Circle

Mustard Seed Bible study is ready to kick off the fall with our Saturday, September 8th meeting. We will meet in the Sunday school room next to Danielle’s office at 9:00am. We will continue with Max Lucado’s study book, Ten Women of the Bible. JoAnn Steuri will lead us in Chapter 5, Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Mary, chosen by God to be the mother of Jesus, the Messiah. Let’s study, share, and learn how Mary is so much more than a Christmas Story. If you would like to join us, please contact Sue Wolter, 897-2221. Each study chapter is an individual study so if you are not at every study you can come when you can and not miss out on the current lesson. Love to have you join us.

The Sewing Circle will meet on Tuesday, September 11th at 9:00am. We will put together lap robes for nursing homes, and tie them together. It is amazing what we can create from donated material. Thanks to all that give fabric and yarn to the cause. Any questions you can call Janice at 897-8386.

WHO NEEDS FLU SHOTS?

It’s coming to that time of year when every pharmacy hangs out their shingle offering flu shots. It used to be that flu shots were only for the seniors or those with pre-existing conditions. Now flu shots are recommended for anyone six months and older including pregnant women. When the majority of the population in an area get the flu vaccination, health officials state that there is “herd immunity”. This offers a better blanket of protection for everyone. The old worry that “getting a flu vaccination will give you the flu” is a myth, since the vaccination does not contain any live virus. It takes approximately two weeks to acquire immunity once the vaccination is given so it is possible that a person may be exposed to someone with the flu and contract it at that time. Before your body has had time to mount protection. Anyone over the age of 65 should consider getting the hyper-strength vaccine to gain optimal protection. So, no excuses, get your flu vaccination to protect yourself and those loved ones around you from influenza.

Sincerely, Vicki Evenson

Yogurt makes a great protein snack, breakfast staple or even a light dessert, but sometimes we like to “dress” it

up a bit. Adding seasonal fruit makes it tastier, while topping it with granola adds a great crunch.

LIGHT GRANOLA 6 cups rolled oats (do not use the quick-cooking) 6 tablespoons walnut oil 2/3 cup frozen unsweetened apple juice concentrate 1 tablespoon vanilla ½ cup wheat germ ½ cup powdered fat-free dry milk 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon salt ¾ cup chopped dried apples ¾ cup chopped raisins nonstick cooking spray Spread oats on a jelly roll pan, bake in the top third of the oven set at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes when it starts to brown. Stir juice concentrate, walnut oil and vanilla in a saucepan, heating just to boiling then set aside to cool. Transfer oats to a bowl and pour cooled juice over it. Now spread the

mixture in two jelly roll pans and bake for10 minutes, tossing periodically. Store in airtight containers at room temperature for up to 3 months.

'Parables of Jesus' Bible Study

Gain powerful historical insights and perspective-shifting cultural context behind the Parables of Jesus with this 6-session DVD study. Unlike most Bible studies available, each session begins in Israel, making it easier to experience and understand the cultural background of key events. Jesus communicated deep spiritual truths through simple, vivid, and engaging stories. Woven from the stuff of first-century Jewish everyday life, the parables of Jesus made the kingdom of God understandable and accessible to his listeners. In six engaging, interactive small group sessions, the DVD will give you the necessary historical background and fresh new insights into his parables and their meanings to help you apply these lessons to your own life. Bible study will start Tuesday, September 18 at 6:30pm for 6 weeks. Pastor Irv will be leading this Bible Study. Contact the church office to reserve your book.

100 Intentional Acts of Love Challenge We were challenged to perform 100 Intentional Acts of Love this year. Can you imagine the immeasurable difference that could make? We are not just doing Random Acts of Kindness, but Intentional Acts of Love. And we are not just doing them to feel good... we are doing them to point to Christ! We might change our communities by being kind... We WILL change our communities by pointing people to Christ. So, what have you committed to this year? How many have you done? What have you done? How have you changed the world? Scrip Cards We spend a big portion of our monthly budget on groceries for our families. But did you know there's a way to make all that money work for you? By using scrip to pay for your regular grocery purchases, you can earn funds for our church everytime you shop. You pay face value and your gift card is worth face value, but the church earns a rebate on every gift card you purchcase. Consider using scrip for your groceries, dining out, or even Christmas presents. Use the code C3C88277561L4 to register! Or fill out an order form found in the church office.

E-giving Testimonial

“I attended the Church Leadership Council on Tuesday, August 14th , and was informed that there are 9 families

that are using the automatic withdrawal for their giving opportunity. I would like to say that I am one of them and find it very convenient to do so. As a member of the church, I have pledged a certain

abount of my income on a regular basis. It is so easy to set up an automatic

withdrawal which can be done weekly, monthly, or any way that fits your

budget. It can also be cancelled at any time. If you cannot attend church for any reason, you will not have to worry about catching up, as it will be automatic. The system reminds you that a withdrawal

and amount have been taken. So, all you have to do is write it in your check book at your convenience. To sign up go to www.brodheadumc.org and click on “Give Online” and it will direct you how to sign up. Git it some serious thought. If you have any questions,

contact the church or talk with me or Gene Prudhon.”

We walk in faith, hope, and love

Janice Davenport

Planned Giving to BUMC

Some people want to give and have those gifts used immediately. Some want to give and have only the income used. The first is usually called memorial or honor giv-ing. The latter is sometimes called endowment gifts. Both become part of the Planned Giving Strategy of the church. The planned giving strategy that we have here at Brodhead United Methodist Church is to facilitate a person’s desire to give. Memorial gifts are often given at the time of a person’s death instead of flowers. It is a way to say that the person was important and will be missed. But memorial gifts do not always have to come at a person’s death. Some people also like to make memorial gifts on the anniversary of someone’s death or at other times in remembrance of someone close. Gifts can be given to honor someone who is still alive. It is a celebration of one’s life at an anniversary, birthday, or just to say thanks. These gifts can be given for general use at the church, or they can be designated to be used by a particular ministry or to purchase a particular item. The Brodhead United Methodist Church has a giving policy that if an undesignated gift is over $10000, 1/3 of that money is put in our Endowment Fund, 1/3 into Capital Improvement, and 1/3 for Missions and Ministries. Please consider including the Brodhead United Methodist Church Memorial/Endowment Fund in your will and estate plans. The blessing will be yours in knowing the important legacy you are leaving for future generations of Christians.
