Dear Bumi Family,There is much to tell you about 2015 so far. The biggest news is that the much awaited, Bumi Sehat Bali clinic is under construction! Pictures paint a thousand words, so here you go…

Our builder plans to be moving us into the new clinic by August 2016, just in time, because the lease on our original building is finished. Watch the Bumi Sehat FaceBook page, for ongoing updates and photos of the construction. The long process of planning and work of our Architects at OG Architects has been amazing. Because of them, we are smoothly sailing in this phase, as the new clinic is being truly born. Thank you for our patience. it’s been worth the wait.

SCHOLARSHIPBumi Sehat, with the help of Sokasi Banten, HRA Pharma in France and Jenny Burgess Scholarship Foundation (JBS) has added 3 new Students to our Scholarship program:

She is from a displaced family, who migrated to Bali, to find livelihood, only to find more challenges, is seeking her degree in Midwives.

She was a Bumi Sehat born baby. She ranked tops in her entrance exams, despite many challenges. She will make a fine Midwife.

He is from Pupuan, a mountain farming community, where there is no medical care for the people. Despite the struggle of being a farming family, Agus was able to finish high school, with top honors. His parents are so happy that he has this opportunity to become a nurse, and serve his people.

This is Sabita Bhatteral, our Bumi Sehat Scholar from Nepal…Sabita’s high school performance was so high that she received a scholarship for Paramedic training and finished this course #1 in her class. Sabita’s husband’s family was crushed under their stone house, in Sindhupalchok, the area hardest hit by the earthquakes. Grandfather died, Mother-in-love is badly injured, still healing. Her Father-in-love has a permanent spinal injury and is paralyzed. Her sister covered her baby with her own body, as the stone house fell on them. The Baby was unharmed, the young mother’s leg was later amputated, she is just grateful that the baby is ok.

Sabita herself miscarried her own baby in the days of not enough food or water and no shelter, following the first big earthquake. This young woman has been looking after everyone as a paramedic in the Naubise Public Health Center, working day and night. Because of our donors Sabita is in nursing school, and will have the Skilled Birth Attendant

As you know Nepal suffered devastating earthquakes in April and May of 2015. Within an hour of the 1st quake, Direct Relief, was on the phone with me. “Are you going?” they asked, knowing that Bumi Sehat is always the best first responder, caring for the pregnant mothers and newborn babies in the wake of disaster. We teamed with One Heart World Wide and off I went to bring the Bumi Sehat model of care to another heartbroken country. On May 12th I was in Nepal, when disaster struck again, with a 7.3 earthquake.

With your generous support we were able to set up a Childbirth Center in Dhading District, upcountry from Kathmandu, beside the destroyed government health center. We worked with the Nepalese Skilled Birth Attendants, in two tents, lit by solar lanterns. The women came from far and wide, to safely, gently give birth.

This is Dewi, who arrived in a half-broken ambulance, from Bhumistan, in hard labor. She had had no previous prenatal care. The moment we saw her Nepalese Midwife Shanti, and I looked at each other and said, “Twins!”

Within minutes of her arrival, Dewi was holding a baby boy. We learned from her mother that Dewi was 16 years old, and had already lost her first child, a few months earlier, to pneumonia.

The second coming baby was in distress, Dewi to pushed with great strength, and a tiny baby girl arrived. This baby needed help breathing, but soon took to life. Dewi hemorrhaged critically. Had we not been there, and had the ambulance tired to push on to Kathmandu, Dewi and the second coming baby, would have perished along the way. There are many stories of Nepal, but this one stands out, because without question, Bumi’s partnership with One Heart, and our generous donors saved two precious lives.

I am off to Italy for the amazing Time to Love fundraiser created by Giacomo Maiolini and Time Records. Next stop, Switzerland to be with the BirthKeepers and Dr. Niccolo Giovannini at the “Conferenza il Parto Gentile.” On to Paris to meet with beloved Sokasi Banten.

Next stop Portland Oregon, for a fundraiser with our sister BirthKeepers at LifeQual Center. I will see family in Texas and California, return to Italy for Loving the Mother and Germany for the Midwifery Today Congress. My hope is to raise enough along the way to finish our clinic and keep Bumi Sehat Health, Education and Human services alive and well.
