Principal’s Message

I would like to thank the Bundarra Central School staff and students for their flexibility and resilience in the face of uncertain times. It feels like all the fun had been taken out of the world and restrictions and social distancing has meant that many of our events, celebrations and hands on lessons were not possible. The students were very excited when they were able to play sport on Wednesday 1 July. We are looking forward to our Athletics Carnival on Friday 31 July. A warm welcome to our new Bundarra families and students. We are looking forward to sharing the learning journey with you. Taco Thursday was a roaring success and the tacos made by the students were delicious! A huge thank you to Asha Bradbery, Kadie O’Grady, Jayden Groth, Chantelle Kruger and Jemma Azzopardi, Mrs Bradbery, Mrs Light and Primary staff for a wonderful lunch. The Pop-Up Café has been extending their menu on Wednesday and Fridays. The service and the food is always excellent. Congratulations to all the students who received Merit, Commendation and Principal awards at our assembly on Wednesday. Congratulations to Robyn Fox, Nate Reynolds, Chantelle Kruger, Sarah O’Grady, Paige Vickery and David Fox who received Principal Awards for demonstrating our core values. Congratulations to the Bronze and Silver PBL students –you are well on your way to the rewards excursion in Term 4. Our school will be Externally Validated on Thursday 31 July. Our External Validation evidence sets have been submitted and it was exciting to see how our staff provide quality teaching, sporting, creative arts, agricultural and community opportunities. Our green screen arrived this week and we are looking forward to setting up a creative arts studio for our students to unleash their creativity. Have a safe and happy holiday. The staff will be returning on Monday 20 July and we are looking forward to seeing our students return on Tuesday 21 July.

Mrs Jennifer Cox Principal

Keeping our children safe is close to all our hearts. While social media can be a great place stay connected. New sites and Apps that pose a Cyber Safety risk to our students are released daily. Omegle is a site that has slipped under the radar for years now and it is frightening!!! Omegle is a free online website that allows users to socialise via text or video without the need to register or identify yourself. Students love the anonymous element to Omegle as they are referred to as Stranger 1 or Stranger 2. Pedophiles also love these

features.

Like Facebook and Instagram you must be at least 13 years old to create an Omegle account and parental permission is suggested for people under 18. Most kids ignore this anyway, just have a look at how many under 13 year olds have Facebook or Instagram accounts it is alarming. Omegle doesn ’t store your personal information/chats or details so you can easily play the “stranger” card and that’s the “hook” for Omegle. An additional feature if you choose is to provide your Facebook or Instagram details such as likes and topics allowing you to connect with people of similar interests.

Many students think this is safe and a lot of fun and regularly move the chat to other media accounts Just because it is anonymous doesn't make it safe, in fact is makes it less safe. The real threat Omegle presents to our students and kids is the random video chat feature. The site itself highlights on their home page “PREDATORS HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO USE OMEGLE SO PLEASE BE CAREFUL,”

Lessons from COVID - Tools for a Successful Life: Resilience Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity. It is a necessary skill for coping with life’s inevitable obstacles and one of the key ingredients to success. When we apply resilience through the positive psychology lens, the learning is not only to bounce back, but to bounce forward. Examples of challenges some young people may face where resiliency skills are essential: Physical illness Change of school Transitioning from primary school to high school Change in family make up (divorce, break up) Having resiliency skills minimises the effect that negative, stressful situations can have on a young person. These skills allow a young person to face challenges, learn from them and apply these skills towards living a healthy life.

Practising Resilience

1. Emotional awareness and self-regulation This is the ability to identify emotional experiences and control emotional response to external events. Resilient people are comfortable with their feelings and they express a broad array of emotions – happiness, joy, fear, sadness. Resilient people don’t get “stuck” in an emotion. Although they might feel sad or scared, they accept that this is a normal part of life and these feelings don’t prevent them from coping with the situation and moving forward. 2. Impulse control We all have impulses to do things and say things – these are not always in our best interest, nor helpful to others. To be resilient doesn’t mean to stop these impulses, but it does require you to stop acting on every impulse that does not serve you well. These skills of impulse control can be learned. 3. Optimism Learning the skills of optimism can help protect against depression and anxiety. Optimism involves learning to think positively about the future – even when things go wrong. It’s about looking objectively at a situation, making a conscious decision to focus on the good. Optimistic people are happier, more engaged, succeed more and are better problem solvers. Optimistic attitudes need to be realistic – it is shooting for the stars without losing site of the ground (Reivich & Shatte 2002). 4. Flexible and accurate thinking To be resilient requires flexible and accurate thinking, seeing different perspectives. Someone who is resilient can come up with a variety of reasons for being successful in something (multiple factors). Flexible and accurate thinking allows multiple solutions to a problem, having Plan B and C is vital to resilience. 5. Empathy This is the ability to recognise another person’s feelings and respond accordingly and respectfully. Understanding another’s emotion in relation to that of your own. Empathy assists resilience through developing strong supportive relationships. Understanding other people’s feelings / emotions / experiences is particularly helpful when people are experiencing tough times. 6. Self-efficacy Having success in something and then using that as a personal reference point for ability, and working on that to bring further success, achievement and a belief in yourself. Always work on achieving your personal best. 7. Connecting and reaching out This involves placing importance in help–seeking behaviours through connections with other people. Having a range of friendship circles that reflect different areas of social need and making the effort to build and nurture friendships that move and change with time. I hope these strategies help and I wish everyone a healthy, happy and safe holiday break.

Year 7 Mandatory Technology has been completing kite design and construction as part of a unit of work called 'Engineered Systems'. This included learning about different types of forces and how they effect a flying machine. This knowledge was then integrated into the design process with the end result being a kite.

Term 2 has been one of the strangest most diverse terms I think I have ever experienced in my school teaching career. Thank you to parents and students alike for being so adaptable and able to make changes. We welcome new students to Bundarra Central School Malakai Judzewitsch in Kindergarten and Amelia Henderson Year 2. Bundarra Central School extends a warm welcome to their families and hope that Malakai and Amelia will enjoy learning and making friendship groups at our school. The Positive Behaviour for Learning core values make the acronym RISE. The focus for Term 1 was Responsibility and Term 2 was Involvement. The expectation is that students will take their learning about these core values through the remainder of the year as the Term 3 focus will be Success. Teachers will work with students to determine what success looks like in different learning environments within the school. Students could participate in discussions and role-play situations with success in mind. All students should be striving for success everywhere, every time. Term 4 focus will be Excellence. We ask parents to discuss the core values with children as they take ownership for their learning. Your support is valued and appreciated. Students have been doing a great job of remembering to bring their broad brimmed hat to school they need to make sure that they wear it when in the playground. There have been a few students arriving at school on the colder mornings without jumpers or long pants on. Please ensure they are protected from the cooler elements as we would not like students to become ill remembering that it can still be cold during Term 3. If they wear layers they can always take them off but if they do not have them they cannot put them on. We are looking forward to Term 3 and the possibility of visitors being able to attend our school with extra-curricular activities and students being able to go on excursions and you will be duly informed. Have an enjoyable, safe holiday with your children ensuring it is a special time doing things together, having fun.
