Principal’s Message

Deputy Principal’s Message

Congratulations to our Primary Touch Footy team who were triumphant against Ben Venue Public School 9-5. This was a great effort as Ben Venue is a much larger school with far more students vying to be on the team. Well done to our girls and they are very close now to being North West champions.

Education systems around the world are promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

In NSW this is called the STEM program. I am pleased that we have been working with this program for the past 2 years. Mrs Pam has been very successful working with groups of students on projects covering electronics, robotics and biodiversity. Mr Shoesmith represented the school at a STEM conference where he has brought back units of work to incorporate into our classrooms. He has introduced computer games development and in the process of developing our student’s ability to produce web pages. Another exciting STEM project is developing a number of projects which will have our students interacting with students from a number of Central Schools including Bingara, Boggabri and Mungindi. Mrs Cox has lead the development of this project and has been successful in gaining seed funding. Next term will see students working in teams to design and produce a model solar car which they will test against solar cars from the other schools in this project. As this STEM project develops students will be using various communication avenues with other schools including video conferencing, Google Apps and Microsoft Office 360. I am very excited to see the growth of this project and how our students will be immersed in 21st Century learning and collaboration techniques.

Finally, Mr Budda-Deen has been invited to present at next year’s World Indigenous Peoples Conference

in Canada. This is a great honour and I am very proud that the accomplishments of one of our teachers is

being recognised internationally.

Dave Bieler Principal

Great things continue to happen at Bundarra Central with all our students. Everyone is very excited about the up-coming Variety Night with both teachers and students devoting time to polish up their acts. It should be a fun night and we are all looking forward to the performances. The Bundarra teaching staff have been engaged in professional learning sessions after school on How2Learn and growth mindset strategies for students. It is important for our children to develop the skills of problem solving, perseverance and resilience. These skills are promoted regularly in our classrooms and it is pleasing to see our students achieving their goals. It is lovely to see the happy faces on our Transition children on Wednesdays. Mrs Blake and Mrs Grant have been introducing “big school” every Wednesday to assist in the best start possible for our students. It is fantastic to be able to have this partnership with the Bundarra Pre-school and hope that it continues well into the future. The Year 10 students are in the process of selecting their electives for their final years of schooling. The

interview process with the parents, head teachers and the students is an important process as it is essential

we all work together to support our wonderful students.

New England Woodturners Excursion Years 7/8, 9/10 and Crossing the Divide students have visited New England Woodturners this week. Rob demonstrated how to make a pen, which was ‘really cool’. They were able to have a look around the workshop and gift shop, in awe of the amazing products that have been produced.

The first recipients of the BCS GOLD award, well done to these students.

Stage 6 completed another successful residential school in Dubbo. Hospitality students completed their work experience requirements and received very positive feedback from their employers. Stage 5 secondary students have been working very hard in preparation for variety night, we all look forward to seeing the products of their hard work of Thursday 15th. Good luck to the stage 5 students as they venture out into the work force next week for work experience. A reminder to Year 11 students about exams 12/9 to 16/9. Don’t forget to be prepared and study. Jeremy Budda-Deen Acting Head Teacher Secondary

Crossing the Divide

Crossing The Divide students have been busily working on many personal projects over the last two weeks, alongside their curriculum studies. As can be seen in the first photo, a buggy is being constructed entirely from scratch, even down to the custom fabrication of a disc brake assembly.

The second photo shows a student lighting up the oxy ready for some steel cutting as part of the Certificate I in Engineering – the students all like to get busy with the oxy, especially when it’s a bit chilly!

The third photo shows another student busy with some salvage work on a donated car, in this case the engine and transmission is being removed.

Also, some exciting news for Bundarra Central Stage 6 and Crossing The Divide students for next year: We are currently in final negotiation stages with TAFE New England for the at-school delivery of Cert II in Construction and Cert II in Hospitality. These courses will add further great choices for students to study at Bundarra Central directly, instead of via Dubbo Distance Ed. Further details will follow soon – exciting times for Bundarra Central School!

The Primary chess team members Clarry Tombs, Wade Powell, Liam Rohrlach, Isabelle Kelly, Tahleah Gleeson and Karley Davis travelled to Armidale on Thursday to take part in the Primary Junior Chess League Competition. 32 teams played from a variety of schools, all students participated beautifully winning at least 1 game each. St Mary’s Catholic School teams were the ones to beat, coming out victorious on the day. On Tuesday, the

Bundarra Primary girls touch football team played against Ben Venue Public School from Armidale in the 4th round of the North West PSSA Girls Knock Out.

The first half was a little one sided with Bundarra getting out to a 5-1 lead. The second half saw Ben Venue come out firing and scored a few unanswered points. The Bundarra girls got their second wind and ended up finishing winners by 9 tries to 5. A huge thankyou to Mr Bieler and Mr Romer for driving the bus, to Mitch, our G.A. for setting up the field, Tom Grant for refereeing the game, Kim O’Donnell and Shanae Vickery for running the lines, Lindsay Groth for timekeeper and scorer, to Ben Venue for travelling and displaying great

sportsmanship and finally a big thankyou to all the parents and friends for their support. K-6 have been very busy practising their Variety Night items. This has been great fun, with the children really looking

forward to performing before a real audience next week. Students in 5/6 (along with the B.C.S. 7/8 students) have joined the Barwon Bytes STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) solar car challenge. This is a part of the Barwon education region’s middle school initiative where students from Years 5 to 8 work in teams to make a solar car which can carry 200 grams. 5/6 Students will be working

in teams with Mrs Dezius, (7/8 with Mrs Pam) during library and release time to learn about the science behind solar cars, test their materials and concepts before making their solar car. These cars will be tested at a STEM day in Bingara in Term 4.

Mrs McKinnon and Years 5 and 6 present the class page this newsletter. Enjoy their response to a

recent video conference with a “real” author/illustrator - one of the varied activities these children have participated in throughout the term.
