Enduring Understandings Essential Questions

Students will understand that different types of texts place different demands on the reader Unlike a time-sequence structure in a narrative informational text organizes its ideas around such universal patterns as cause-effect and problem-solution The features of informational text enhance our understanding

Why do I need to understand the features of informational text How do I read fiction and nonfiction differently Why do I need to read a wide variety of different material

How can I evaluate the effectiveness of informational text

Bundle Performance Task(s)

Extra Extra Read all about it Disaster Digest is in need of articles about natural disasters such as earthquakes tornadoes volcanoes blizzards droughts hurricanes floods etc Each student will research one natural disaster and write an informational article As students go through the research process they will be able to identify the structure of the texts comparison causeeffect problemsolution etc Students then work in small groups ndash with each member having a different researched disaster ndash and create a page that incorporates all articles Graphics diagrams charts andor maps may be added to help the reader have a deeper understanding of each disaster All of the completed pages will be included in a classroom copy of Disaster Digest (These are possible resources for teachers to use suggested list of books at the end of this bundle teacher plan for Performance Task - scroll to Preparation natural disaster book list httpenvironmentnationalgeographiccomenvironmentnatural-disastersforces-of-nature )

As an extension students may create a U S map which shows landforms and locations of natural disasters that have occurred within the last five years They may include a paragraph explaining where the ldquosafestrdquo place (from natural disasters) is for people to live in our country
