Farewell Parish Office Yesterday we moved our Office to Executive Place [Shop 5], Executive Drive, Burleigh Waters [just behind Tree Tops Shopping Centre]. Apart from the fact that we [office staff and priests] are suffering from the tiring task of clearing out 16 years of accumulated bits and pieces, and packing and unpacking everything, we hope to have survived the trauma! Our Office, once known as the Poyser House [after the family who owned the land], will be demolished to make way for the new church. Thanks for the memories! Possession of the Site On Monday, our builders – Stokes Wheeler, will take possession of the site and begin clearing the land. Initially, there will be extensive earth works as the land is levelled to create the building platform. This will mean that for some weeks, heavy vehicles will be entering and leaving the site. This also means that there will be no access to our Parish schools via the Sunlight Drive private roadway into MMP, however, the lower GCCC Sunlight Drive car park will remain open. Both Marymount Primary and College will be in contact with all parents to advise how to access the schools during construction. I sincerely thank Greg Casey and Chris Noonan for their earnest efforts to assist our families during the construction period. This is deeply appreciated. Parishioners are also reminded that our land is now a building site and access is restricted. It is my intention to keep everyone up to date with progress, and I hope to call a meeting of parishioners soon to answer any questions about the project and its funding. Meanwhile, it is important that we pray for all those who will work on the building site, especially for their safety and well-being during construction. Perhaps we could pray this prayer: All-powerful and all-merciful Father, you have created all things through your Son and have made him the unshakable foundation of your kingdom. Through the gift of your eternal wisdom, grant that the building of our new church for your glory and our own well-being may progress day by day to its successful completion. May all construction personnel be kept safe as they work for the completion of the project. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen Laying of the Foundation Stone of Mary, Mother of Mercy Church I am very pleased to advise, that following consultation with Archbishop Coleridge, the Apostolic Nuncio to Australia, Archbishop Adolfo Tito Yllana, has been invited to lay the foundation stone. Archbishop Yllana is Pope Francis’ representative in Australia and resides in Canberra. This is planned for Sunday 6 March. More details to follow soon. The name ‘Ordinary Time’ which is used to describe that

part of the church year outside the seasons of Advent,

Christmas, Lent and Easter is perhaps rather an unfortunate

term. The word ‘ordinary’ commonly means something that

is unexceptional or uninteresting. However, the word

‘ordinary’ as used in ‘Ordinary Time’ simply means that the

Sundays after the seasons of Christmas and Easter are

numbered in order. It is best to think of Ordinary Time as

one of the liturgical seasons – the longest season of the

church year. Its liturgical colour of green points the hope

which participation in the paschal mystery brings to all

Christians. As Christians, Sunday is our original feast day –

the day to celebrate Christ’s resurrection. Feasts of local

saints and other celebrations began to take over the Sunday

celebration of the paschal mystery during the Middle Ages.

By the time of Pius X in the early 1900’s, the Sunday Mass

texts were rarely used. After Vatican II the new

Sacramentary restored the central place of Sunday in the

celebration of each week and the primacy of Ordinary Time

as a whole. When we think about it, there is no such thing

as ‘ordinary time’ in Christian worship. While music and

decorations used during the high season of the Church year

will be scaled down in Ordinary Time, the basic principles

of good liturgy remain –scripture readings that are well

prepared and proclaimed, large liturgical symbols that speak

clearly of the meaning they carry, and music that supports

the rites. Ordinary Time enables us to devote ourselves to

exploring the mystery of Christ in all its aspects and to

celebrate the presence of God in the ordinary patterns of

human life.

THE GOSPEL OF LUKE The Gospel reading for Sunday Mass this year are

predominately from Luke, as it will be for every Sunday in

Ordinary Time for the rest of 2016, which is Year C of the 3

-year cycle of Sunday readings. Scripture scholars agree that

Luke was a highly educated writer and gifted storyteller

who knew the Greek translation of the Old Testament and

had perhaps been a convert to Judaism before becoming a

Christian. Luke admits that he was not an eyewitness to the

ministry of Jesus. For his narrative he draws on Mark’s

gospel, on a collection of Jesus’ sayings known as Q (from

the German word Quelle meaning ‘source’) and on a

number of other written and oral sources. Luke wrote his

story in two volumes – the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of

the Apostles. The date of Luke – Acts is usually given at

around 80, based on Luke’s use of Mark and his description

of local church structures and issues. Luke’s gospel tells of

Jesus’ journey from Galilee to Jerusalem, a journey that is

completed in the Acts of the Apostles by the journey of the

church from Jerusalem “to the ends of the earth”. Luke’s

journey story is not just a geographical or historical record

however. Rather it is a model of the path which the entire

church and every individual Christian must follow – one

that leads towards suffering and glory. Luke inspires

Christ’s followers by reminding them of God’s past

faithfulness in order to instil hope and trust in the promises

yet to be fulfilled. Salvation is a prominent theme in Luke’s

gospel. It shows Jesus saving people throughout his

ministry, and that salvation is happening in their very

midst: “Today this scripture has been fulfilled”, “Today you

will be with me in paradise”. A winged ox is the traditional

symbol for Luke the evangelist because of this emphasis on

the sacrificial aspect of Christ’s life. Oxen were commonly

offered up as a sacrifice.

Food figures prominently in Luke, with nineteen different

meals mentioned. Several of the parables have a banquet as

their setting and Jesus comes under fire for eating with the

wrong people. More than any of the other gospel writers,

Luke gives importance to the role of women. He places

Mary at the centre of his infancy narrative and pairs the

men in his stories with women (Zechariah and Elizabeth,

Simeon and Anna). In the story about Martha and Mary,

Mary does what would have been unacceptable at the time

– she sits at the feet of Jesus as a disciple. Luke’s emphasis

on Jesus’ ministry to those on the fringes of society is

evident right from the start with Mary’s song, The

Magnificat. Jesus makes it the central message of his first act

of preaching: “He has sent me to proclaim release to the

captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the

oppressed go free” (Lk 4: 18). The wonderful “lost and

found” stories (the stray sheep, the missing coin, the

prodigal son), which are some of the most popular in the

Bible, are to be found only in the Luke’s gospel. © Elizabeth Harrington [adapted]

Lenten Program 2016 Being Lost - Being Found

The season of Lent during this Jubilee Year should be lived more intensely as a privileged moment to celebrate and experience God's mercy. The readings are from the Gospel of Luke; the 'gospel of mercy'. On the Fourth Sunday the reading is the parable of the two sons, the third of the 'lost and found parables'. In these parables we find the core of the Gospel.

Liturgical Music for Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

INTRODUCTORY RITES: Gathering: We Are Called Come, live in the light. Shine with the joy and the love of the Lord. We are called to be light for the kingdom, to live in the freedom of the city of God. We are called to act with justice, we are called to love tenderly, we are called to serve one another; to walk humbly with God. Come, open your heart. Show your mercy to all those in fear. We are called to be hope for the hopeless so all hatred and blindness will be no more. Sing, sing a new song. Sing of that great day when all will be one. God will reign, and we'll walk with each other as sisters and brothers united in love. © 1988, David Haas, GIA Publications

LITURGY OF THE WORD: Psalm Response: All proclaim God's marvellous deeds to all the nations.

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST: Acclamation: Save us, Saviour of the world, for by your cross and resurrection you have set us free.

Next week’s readings: Neh 8:2-6,8-10; 1 Cor 12:12-30; Lk 1:1-4,14-21

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST: Communion Processional: Communion Song We see bread and wine before us, but hidden from our view lies the flesh and blood of Jesus, now sacrificed for us anew. Jesus, we bring to you our bodies. Jesus we bring to you our souls, needing nourishment, needing healing, seeking peace. On the night before he suffered, He took the bread into His hands. Giving thanks and praise He broke it, saying, “Take and eat, this is my body”. And when supper was then ended He took the wine again gave thanks, saying “Take and drink of my Cup, this is my Blood to be shed for you”. © Peter Grant CONCLUDING RITES Dismissal: Deep In The Spirit If the Spirit of God lives in you, sing to the Lord. Praise him for his goodness. Deep in the Spirit your song. I will play for him. Joy filled is my song. My life is my melody. To him I belong. Deep in Christ I live. Faith in him my prayer.

When my soul is torn and dry, faith to sense him there. Spirit in my heart, sing for me my prayer. Deep within my heart I know: you are always there. © 1979, Frank Andersen, Chevalier Press
