Fr. Mahoney’s Message

BURLINGTON CATHOLIC

Dear Burlington Catholic Collaborative, Today we hear The Parable of the Dishonest Steward. The Parable sounds a bit funny/odd at first. The rich man calls the dishonest steward Prudent. Why? How can he say this? The answer is: The steward simply cuts out his own commission! He "invests" in his future by giving to the lenders what would have been his own commission. By doing so, he wins their good will for his own future. The passage concludes with three morals for us. The first one shows us our need to handle the affairs of temporal life with an eye toward eternal life. The second concerns trustworthiness. If we can handle money and other passing things responsibly, then we can also be trusted with the affairs of the Kingdom of God. Finally, Jesus tells us that no one can serve two masters simultaneously. God must be put ahead of everything else. The “Mass Times Committee” will be meeting this Monday to discuss the options to develop a new Mass Schedule that will be best for our Collaborative and our two Parishes. Please Note Well: They still have all the information that was gathered in the spring from all the input the parishioners gave in the survey, along with the emails they received this past week. They are working very hard to make the schedule fair with regard to the numbers of parishioners and offertories that will put the two parishes in our Collaborative in the best possible positions liturgically and financially. They are also trying to make it fair for the Priests who will have to celebrate these Masses. Remember – we only have 2 priests assigned to the Collaborative. If one of us becomes ill, it would be impossible for the other to cover all the Masses in the current configuration, even with the help of Fr. Conroy. Please pray for more Vocations. It is our hope that the new Mass schedule will be announced by the end of October or the beginning of November and be implemented on December 1, 2019. When the new schedule is put into place, please be understanding and flexible.

Did you know? Concerning our Priests: We have 283 Parishes. We have 255 active priests assigned to these parishes. We have 227 Retired/Senior priests. We have almost as many retired priests as we do active priests. And think of this number: Out of the 255 active priests, 85 of those are parochial vicars. That’s right, we are one of 85 parishes Blessed to have a Parochial Vicar, Fr. Mark, assigned to us. There are now 88 Collaborative formed in the Archdiocese consisting of 158 parishes. These numbers were from August 1. And I know that about ½ dozen priests have retired since that date. Did you also know that a Newly Ordained Priest’s first assignment averages anywhere from 3 to 6 years. When Fr. Mark’s assignment changes in 3 to 6 years from now, there is a very real possibility that he will not be replaced. Sobering thought, isn’t it? Pray for more vocations! So when it comes to Mass time changes later this fall, please remember these numbers concerning our priests, and be understanding and flexible.

Disciples In Mission. This Thursday evening is an Orientation Meeting for all Collaborative Coordinators who will be assisting all the new Collaboratives in their first 2 years of meetings and planning for the future. I have asked Anne Pye and Michelle Campbell to be our Coordinators for our Collaborative. They will assist me by registering people for workshops, coordinating plan writing details with the Collaborative Support Team, and overseeing the preparation work for the Disciple Maker Index survey. As these things materialize, I will keep you informed of all that the Archdiocese is asking the Collaboratives to do for the Pastoral Plan. Thank you to all of you who welcomed Deacon Mason Wiggins last weekend. He was humbled and grateful for your kindness and your promises of prayer and support. He is a Seminarian at Pope St. John XXIII Seminary in Weston and is studying for the Priesthood for the Diocese of Saint Augustine which is located in Jacksonville, Florida.

Let us pray for each other. God bless, Father Mahoney

CATHOLIC APPEAL APPRECIATION MASS On Sunday, September 29th at the 10:30 am Mass, Cardinal Sean O’Malley will be joining St. Malachy Parish in celebration and appreciation of all those who support the important work of the Catholic Appeal. Many guests are expected to attend. Each year the Catholic Appeal raises much needed funds for the Central Ministries of the Archdiocese of Boston. It is these faith-based ministries, programs, and services that enable the Church of Boston, under the direction of Cardinal O’Malley to reach across parish boundaries in the areas of Social Justice, Worship/Prayer, Christian Education, Pastoral Care, Church Administration and Evangelization. The Appeal is funded through the generosity and commitment of those who believe in these ministries and want to ensure that they remain strong. I hope that you will join with Cardinal Sean in this celebration of the Catholic Appeal.

HURRICANE RELIEF COLLECTION Cardinal Seán has asked for a special collection to be taken the weekend of September 21-22 in all parishes in the Archdiocese of Boston, in support of the relief efforts for the (arch)dioceses of the Bahamas and the United States that have been ravaged by the destruction of Hurricane Dorian. We have all seen the devastation caused by this severe storm. The emergency needs of the local Church in these areas will be great.

ADULT ALTAR SERVERS NEEDED FOR FUNERAL MASSES We are very much in need of Adult Altar Servers for Funerals, especially at St. Margaret’s. The one server we had is no longer able to assist because of health issues. Please contact Karen Carey at 617-957-8173 to volunteer your services. No worries if you have never done this before: Karen will coordinate the training. Remember: Jesus doesn’t want “membership” in His Church, he desires disciples to evangelize and continue His works of mercy, love and service in His name. Perhaps the Lord is calling you to this ministry. We are also in need of daily Mass Altar Servers and Lectors for the 6:45 a.m. daily Mass. Please speak to Fr. Mahoney about volunteering for the daily Mass.

ST. MALACHY’S SECOND COLLECITION Due to the collection to help those in the Bahamas this weekend our monthly second collection for Building & Major Projects will be held next weekend September 28th/29th. Thank you for your contin-ued support.

INITIATAVE FOR PALLIATAVE CARE Are you concerned about your aging parents? Have you or has someone you know been diagnosed with a serious illness? Come hear a presentation and join in a discussion about palliative care, a way for people to live better with serious illness that offers support for loved ones as well. Palliative care is often confused with hospice care and they are not the same thing. A Palliative Care/Advance Care Planning presentation will take place on Monday, September 23, 2019 at 7:00 PM at St. Patrick Church hall in Watertown. Presented by the Archdiocese of Boston’s Initiative for Palliative Care and Advance Care Planning.

On behalf of our priests in good standing, thank you for your generous support of last week’s special collection for the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust. The strength and vibrancy of our communities depend on the health and well-being of our priests, including our senior priests, who have celebrated our marriages, baptized our children, and blessed our loved ones as they have been called home to God. Truly, healthier priests build stronger communities. If you missed last week’s collection, you can still make a gift by using the special collection envelopes in the pews, or by going online to clergytrust.org. Thank you again for your generosity.

Abortion destroys the smallest and most helpless members of the human family. We, as Catholics (Christians), are called by God to protect His precious gift of life. Did you know that your tax dollars are being used to pay for abortions in Massachusetts? Fortunately, there is something each of us can do to stop this. On the weekend of October 5th and October 6th, volunteers from the Massachusetts Alliance to Stop Taxpayer Funded Abortion will be collecting signatures on a petition to amend the state constitution so that taxpayer subsidized abortions are no longer a constitutional entitlement in Massachusetts. Please stop and sign this petition to help save the lives of unborn babies. We are looking for parish volunteers to help collect signatures after all masses the weekend of October 5th & 6th, 2019. If you want to get involved and do more to help the prolife movement, please contact Kathy Parsons at 781-910-7682 or [email protected] to volunteer. Learn more www.StopTaxpayerAbortion.org. Thank you. There will be a 1 hour training for volunteers (or if you'd like to come and learn more information) on Wednesday September 25th at 7:00 pm @ The First Congregational Church 18 Andover Rd. Billerica

Healthier Priests. Stronger Communities.

Funds from this special collection are managed by the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust – an independently managed trust with a majority lay board of trustees. The funds are used for the sole benefit of active and senior priests in good standing.

The strength and vibrancy of our communities depend largely on the welfare of our priests who tirelessly serve others from all walks of life.

Powerful examples of strength in community are visible across 144 cities and towns of the Archdiocese of Boston. The roots of these communities can be traced back to the work of our priests.

Pine Street Inn: A Boston priest was one of the original founders of Pine Street Inn, which provides shelter and emergency services for nearly 2,000 homeless men and women in the Boston area every day.

Cor Unum: Started by a Lawrence pastor, Cor Unum (“One Heart”) food pantry serves more than 250,000 meals annually to poverty-stricken families in Lawrence.

Addiction Support for Families: A Boston priest’s expertise in addiction and recovery has been instrumental for organizations helping families and individuals in the grips of addiction.

Rostro de Cristo: Efforts to help the poor on the margins of Ecuador’s largest city is hard work, except for those who have been inspired by a Boston priest who started Rostro de Cristo, an organization based in Boston that lives the Gospel and serves the poor.

It’s simple: healthier priests mean stronger communities. Please support clergytrust.org
