When Buckland bought the heritage building from the city last year, he had to promise to do restoration work on
its historical features, such as rescuing some original murals.
“The lady who did it all, it took her six months with a little Q-tip,” said Buckland.
“I don’t know how many layers of paint there were.”
Columbia Theatre has two rooms: the Grand Ballroom on the ground fl oor is a the-
atre with cabaret-style seating for 300. It’s still being renovated, but its grand opening is slated for the third weekend in Septem-ber, when it will host
the Vancouver Com-edyfest.
The Vancouver Circus School also plans to perform there around Halloween.
The old-style, curved staircase leads up to a second room that looks more like what you’d expect from a stand-up comedy club. The tables here seat 220. There’s a bar at the back and a small stage in a corner that’s visible from all angles and not blocked by any columns, as it was in the old venue.
Buckland has soundproofed it with blue acoustic ceiling tiles and added a wheelchair-accessible washroom.
“The old venue was on the third fl oor and there was no wheel-chair access. Here we have an elevator, so
handicapped and older people can come,” he said.
Both rooms have been repainted with gold trim accenting the cornices and giv-ing the room a classy retro look.
Buckland estimates that when all is said and done, he’ll have spent about $1.8 mil-lion purchasing and renovating the place.
Despite all the fancy changes, it’s still all about the laughs.
Another thing he loves about his job is seeing people still laughing on their way out the door.
“It doesn’t matter what the economy is,” he said. “When it’s good, people want to spend money. When it’s bad, they need a good laugh.”
MARIO BARTEL/NEWSLEADERBarry Buckland checks out the decorative ceiling in the lobby of the newly renovated Columbia Theatre, which is the home for his Laffl ines Comedy Club.
CONTINUED FROM PAGE A3
At comedy club, it’s still all about the laughsWhat happened to ‘The Burr’?Barry Buckland cannot display the legendary “Burr Theatre” name on his marquee at the Columbia Theatre because he doesn’t own the rights to the name.“The Raymond Burr (Performing) Arts Society owns the rights,” he said. “They won’t even talk to me because they put in an offer for the building too and didn’t get it.”Buckland added that he will be honouring Raymond Burr by displaying a portrait of him, as well as a plaque naming all the people who bought chairs for the Burr theatre. Ted Eddy of the Raymond Burr Performing Arts Society said that Maureen Albanese, who is a relative of Burr’s, does not want the name Burr associated with a comedy club.Buckland encourages anyone who bought a seat to call him at 604-525-2262.

Since I have nearly given up on summer weather, I have turned my attention
to fall. It is my favourite time of
year. Maybe it’s because of the
changing landscape and the bounty of fresh local produce in the stores or just maybe it’s the
beginning of the new school year.
To me it’s a fresh start and everything is new—new clothes, new supplies, new routines and in some cases, new resolu-tions.
Don’t get me wrong. What little summer we have had has been fabulous.
The Fraser River Discovery Centre has been buzzing and our summer staff have been busy enthusiastically introducing local visitors and tourists from around the world to the Fraser River. In the fall, the discovery centre gears up for a new kind of visitor—the student.
Along with the regular visitors, fall brings classrooms of young minds, eager to explore and discover everything about the Fraser River through the centre’s interactive school programs.
From the living dinosaurs that lurk in the waters, to the importance of protecting the ecosystem that is vital to the health of the river, to what lays below the layers of soil along the banks of the mighty Fraser River, there is much to discover.
Shannon King, our education coordina-tor, and her team of docents are preparing for the young and eager visitors’ arrival.
So what are your plans this fall? Are you passionate about the Fraser
River? Do you have a few hours to spare to help an organization within your com-munity?
The discovery centre is always looking for new volunteers to assist with the deliv-ery of these popular programs.
The rewards of volunteering are many and our young visitors will lift your spirits with their enthusiasm.
So why not make it your fall resolution and join our team of volunteers. Contact us today. We would love to hear from you!

VICTORIA – B.C.’s plan to fund nicotine patches and gum for smokers has been lauded by the Cana-dian Cancer Society and other health organizations, but the program has its detractors.
Public feedback since the program was announced in May include a variety of criticisms, according to documents released by Premier Christy Clark’s offi ce under freedom of informa-tion legislation.
The program is set to start Sept. 30. It will provide people up to 12 weeks’ supply of over-the-counter nico-tine gum or patches, or prescription pills approved by the Phar-macare program. The government estimates it will cost $15-25 mil-lion a year, depending on how many smokers sign up.
“As a physician, I am a bit ambivalent about your decision to fund nicotine replacement, as along with the drug there is also need for counselling and follow-up,” said one response posted on B.C.’s new open information website.
Others objected to
the decision to spend millions on nicotine replacement, while diabetics and other chronic disease patients have to pay to treat conditions they did not bring upon themselves. A Kelowna resident cited the example
of treatment for his wife’s sleep apnea, including $100 a month in medicine and $2,000 for a machine recom-mended by her family doctor and cardiolo-gist.
“I honestly believe it is outright wrong to pay for this when smokers made a choice to start smok-ing and continue to make a choice every time they light up,” he said.
A former smoker who quit before nico-tine replacement was available also objected.
“I realize [nicotine replacement] is expensive, but so are cigarettes,” the ex-smoker wrote. “If a person is desirous
of quitting, then don’t buy cigarettes, buy the patch instead.”
Others urged the B.C. government to extend the program to cover stop-smoking
treatments that use lasers, acupuncture and other treatments. Several hypnothera-pists sent a form letter urging the government to extend coverage to
their form of smoking treatment.
The health min-istry estimates that more than 6,000 B.C. residents die from tobacco use each
year. Tobacco-related illnesses cost an estimated $2.3 billion a year, $605 million of which is direct health-care costs.
