choral society receives surprise civic award St. Andrew’s Church was full to the brim on Saturday 20 April 2013, as it was the
Burnham & Highbridge Choral Society’s Annual Spring concert.
Just as the concert was about to start, the Town Mayor, Councillor Ken Smout surprised the Choral Society by presenting them with a civic award.
After the applause had stopped and calm restored, the choir along with an orchestral ensemble, entertained a packed Church to the delights of Vivaldi’s Gloria, a selection of songs from Les Misérables, and a specially commissioned piece of music written by Paul Mealor
to celebrate the anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation, entitled Jubilate Jubilee.
Soloists Pamela Rudge and Anne Stanford joined the choir to sing the solo pieces for Vivaldi’s Gloria. They had beautiful voices, were entertaining and very witty. They treated the audience to two duets, along with a selection of solo pieces.
The performance ended with thunderous applause. The Choral Society received many positive comments about the variety of music within their programme, and the sound that was produced by the choir.
The Choral Society would like
to thank everyone who made this concert a great success, with special thanks going to the audience for continuing to support them every year. Without this support, they say they would not be able to continue providing quality performances that you have come to expect from them.
They look forward to seeing you all again at their Christmas concert, which is on 12 December, at St. Andrew’s Church, Burnham-on-Sea.
If you enjoyed the concert and would like to sing with the choir, why not go along in September and give it a try! More details will appear nearer the time.

apex park news
A celebratory buffet and special ‘thank you’ took place on Tuesday 11 June for Joyce Beard, who has been Chairman of the Friends of Apex Park Improvements Group for 12 years.
Joyce was joined at the Princess Theatre by past and present members of Friends of Apex Park Improvements Group as well as Sedgemoor’s Chairman, Cllr Peter Downing, Council Officers and Denise Timmins from the Volunteer Centre for Mendip and Sedgemoor.
At a recent Friends AGM and after 12 committed years, Joyce stepped down as Chairman of the Friends of Apex Park Improvements Group. Therefore, Derek Chivers
was voted Vice-Chairman until the Chairman’s role could be filled. Joyce was presented with a certificate of appreciation for an outstanding contribution to volunteering, which in total for all her time of volunteering in the community equates to seventy-five years! Sedgemoor’s Parks and Open Spaces Project Officer, Marina Turner commented:
“I would like to thank everyone for attending the event which showed how much Joyce is appreciated. Her efforts and hard work over the years hasn’t gone unnoticed and she deserves to be congratulated for not only the Friends’ group evolving but for keeping the group sustainable ever since. It is this which has helped the park to become successful in gaining grant funding in the past, allowing events to be organised for the community, which has all contributed towards achieving the Green Flag Award over several years.”
New members are welcome, so if you would like to become a Friend of Apex Park Improvements Group, please email: [email protected] or by calling 01278 435 512.

happy Birthday wi!Burnham-on-Sea Woman's Institute is 36 years old in July! What do you remember from 1977? Here are some major events: The Queen celebrated
her Silver Jubilee; the first Stars Wars film was released; Elvis Presley died; inflation was a massive 15.8%; Virginia Wade won Wimbledon; James Callaghan was Prime Minister; the average house price in London was £16,500; the average weekly wage was £70 and a loaf of bread cost 28p - I could go on!
So to mark our achievement we are having a celebration at our monthly meeting on Tuesday 23 July at 2pm at the Community Centre. There will be some delicious food and good company
and we will be entertained by Susan Marshfield, telling us about her 'Holidays Afloat'.
You are welcome to join us for an enjoyable afternoon of laughter and celebration. If you can't come to our July meeting then you are welcome to come along to one of our other meetings. highbridge furniture Limited A BIG thank you to all who helped out at our recent fun day. Our thanks also go to stall holders, ladies from the RNLI fundraising, and BARB Hovercraft team for their participation. Plenty of photos were taken of everyone enjoying themselves , and we were lucky with good weather for the day, with plenty of people attending and enjoying cream teas, cakes and refreshments. Children enjoyed taking part in the various activities available and the bouncy castle, and the total raised after the cost of the
bouncy castle was taken out, was £118.39 – which will go back into the community.

FibRe is HeRe!! Great news – the Burnham-on-Sea Exchange is now taking orders for BT’s fibre optic broadband product offering speeds up to 80mb (average I see is usually 40-60mb). Unfortunately, not all of BoS and Highbridge are covered (yet), although this is likely to change over the coming months. Check out this website to see if you can order a fibre-optic service: wwwbtwholesale.com/includes/adsl/main.html
If you are currently NOT a BT customer, you may need to put in your postcode to find out if you can get the fibre upgrade. You do not need to be a BT customer to get fibre optic, as companies such as TalkTalk also offer a fibre upgrade
The search will return a box stating 'Available Products' – if you see the words WBC FTTC at the top of the list, then you are able to order fibre optic product, or at worst case, there may be an availability date shown. If WBC FTTC is not mentioned in the box, then Fibre is probably not yet available, although I would recommend checking with your Internet provider just in case this is not correct.
In particular, Berrow suffered from very poor
speeds due to distance from the Exchange – and as far as I know, in the large part is covered by the new fibre optic upgrade. Fibre (in theory) should also be much more reliable than standard broadband – it requires new equipment (usually provided cheaply or free by the Internet provider), plus an engineer also comes to your home/work to install the service (at no extra cost). Fibre is also very good for households with multiple computers users and/or people that watch TV services such as BBC iPlayer and Sky Go.
If you are not happy with your current provider and would like a better deal, please contact me on [email protected] stating your phone number, and I can see about getting you a better price for your broadband, phone calls and line rental.
On a different subject, Microsoft has also announced a free upgrade to Windows 8 which will bring back the Start button – I will update you through this column once I know more.

Bosh Youth theatreIt is almost a year since Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge (BOSH) Youth Theatre group launched at their home The Princess Theatre and Arts Centre. The group is growing from strength to strength and at this moment is in rehearsals for its summer production ‘The Blue
Bird’, written by Maurice Maeterlinck. This play was written in 1908 and the cast have had the
experience of a totally different form of writing to what they are normally used to. The story of The Blue Bird centres around two young woodcutter’s children, Tyltyl and his younger sister Mytyl. An appearance on Christmas Eve of Fairy Berylune whisks the children into a journey that takes them through the past, present and future worlds searching for the Blue Bird of Happiness. With talking trees and the companionship along the way from such things as Sugar, Milk, Bread, Light and Night the list is endless, do the children find what they are looking for? The cast of about thirty children ranging in age from 8 to 16 are working very hard getting this little known play on to the stage.
The group is led by a small team of dedicated adults, all who have been involved in drama for many years. New members are welcome and anyone interested in joining should call Sam on 01278 793099. The Blue Bird hits the Princess stage on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 July at 7pm. Tickets are adults £6, concs £3 and family tickets at £15. Will the children find the Blue Bird of Happiness? Come along and find out!

advice from sedgemoor citizens’ advice BureauThis is the latest of a series of articles in which an experienced adviser from Sedgemoor Citizens’ Advice Bureau offers readers guidance on matters that are of concern.
BuYing oVer the internetMany people buy goods and services over the internet, but are not always clear about their legal rights. Essentially, when you buy goods over the internet from a UK based company, you have the same rights as if you had bought them from a shop. This means that:• The goods must match their description and
conform to any advertising claims made about them.
• The goods must be of satisfactory quality. In other words, they must meet the standard that a reasonable person would expect.
• The goods must be fit for purpose, which includes what you would normally expect from the goods in question and anything you have specifically pointed out to the seller.
• If the seller is a business (rather than a private individual) and sells goods that are unsafe or fail to a material degree to match their description or price, a criminal offence may have been committed.
There are some additional rights associated with internet purchases. These include:
• Clear information before you buy, including the name of the seller and the price of the goods. If you pay money before the goods are delivered, the seller must also give you his or her full postal address.
• The right to cancel your order and get your money back any time up to seven working days after you have received the goods. You might, however, have to pay to return the goods. Note that you cannot cancel if the goods were made to order or were perishable or were newspapers. Nor can you return audio or video recordings that have been unsealed.
• The goods should be delivered within thirty days, unless you and the seller agree otherwise.
These rights do not apply when you buy: financial services; timeshare arrangements; food and drink from a delivery service; goods at an on-line auction; services such as accommodation, catering or leisure services that are ordered for a specific date or period. If you pay by credit card for a single item worth between £100 and £30,000, the credit card company may have equal liability with the seller, even if the credit card company is not based in the UK. If you buy from an overseas company, your rights will depend on the law in the country where the firm is based. Within the European Union, your rights will be similar to those in the UK.
Here are some of the ways in which you can deal with any problems that arise:• If the goods aren’t delivered within thirty days, or
by the agreed date, you have the right either to cancel and get your money back or to ask for a replacement.
• If the goods are damaged or are substantially different from their description, you are entitled to ask for a full refund, including the cost of all postage and packaging.
• If the goods are faulty and you return them promptly, you don’t have to agree to a replacement or repair.
• You may be entitled to compensation if the goods don’t match their description, or are of unsatisfactory quality or are not fit for purpose. Such shortcomings could amount to breach of contract.
• If there is a problem, stop using the goods, find proof of purchase, contact the seller (and, if applicable, the credit card company) in writing, enclosing a copy of the proof of purchase. Explain the problem and state what you want, for example, a full refund, a repair, a replacement or compensation. Keep a copy of your letter and send the original by recorded delivery. Make a note of the details of any telephone conversations you have with the company, including the date and time of all calls and the name of the person to whom you have spoken.
• If you are unable to gain satisfactory redress, your ultimate option is to take court action, but you should always seek advice before contemplating this step.
• If an advert proves misleading, indecent or dishonest, you can contact the Advertising Standards Authority (020 7492 2222).
• Help is always available from the Citizens’ Advice Consumer Helpline (0845 404 0506).
Further, detailed advice is available by visiting one of Sedgemoor CAB’s drop-in sessions at:• Burnham-on-Sea Methodist Church, College St.,
Burnham-on-Sea. (Tuesdays, 9.30am-12.30pm).• Hope Baptist Church, Church St., Highbridge.
(Thursdays, 9.30am-12.30pm).• The Lions, West Quay, Bridgwater. (Monday-Friday

encouraging dog owners … … …A new radio station for the Cheddar Valley area is gearing up for a full time launch. Pulse Radio has begun broadcasting test
transmissions from their purpose built studios in Cheddar, ahead of a full launch on Thursday 9th May.
Pulse applied to Ofcom for a community radio licence and received the news that they had been successful in April 2012. Since then, the team have been busy preparing the station behind the scenes.
The Pulse team are promising a truly local radio service, with local news and travel updates, along with regular announcements of local events in and around the area. The on air team includes experienced professional
broadcasters such as Dave Englefield (former breakfast show host on BCRfm/Quaywest in Bridgwater), Mike Whittingham (drivetime host on BCRfm/Quaywest) and David Southway (ex-WFM/Star in Weston, Classic Gold and GWR), alongside younger presenters such as Charlie Hockin and George Coombes, who, at just 15, is the youngest member of the on air team. In addition, Pulse will also be offering some specialist shows, such as Mike Ashley’s Monday evening show, which will focus on soul music from the sixties legends of Motown, Stax and Atlantic through to the cream of today’s independent and rising soul stars.
You can tune in to the station now on 104.4FM to hear a non-stop mix of music from the 60s through to today. Pulse will be launching their full time service at 8am on 9th May.
sdc gets tough on irresponsible dog ownersSince the beginning of June, Sedgemoor District Council’s Dog Warden Service have issued ten fixed penalty notices for Dog Fouling offences. Tickets have been issued
in Bridgwater and in both residential and seaside areas of Burnham-on-Sea. We are keen to ensure that dog fouling does not blight our pavements for residents or visitors. This level of enforcement is part of an on-going drive to crack down on this antisocial behaviour. The message to residents of Sedgemoor is:
“Young or old, rich or poor do not leave your dog’s mess on the floor! If you fail to clean up your doggy’s poo a fixed penalty notice will be issued to you.”
People who are issued with fixed penalty notices have 14 days to pay the fine or they could face prosecution in the magistrates’ court for the offence.
10% early Bird discount on coursesThe new Adult Learning Guide from Somerset Skills & Learning is out on the 1 July and you have until
the end of the month to get a great 10% off most published course fees. 10% off their ‘Watercolour’ course easily pays for the course equipment; 10% off their ‘Getting to Know your iPad’ course is almost seven music downloads from iTunes; 10% off their Level 1 ‘Sugarcraft’ course pays for most of the ingredients you will use on the course.
The new Adult Learning Guide contains listings for all the courses, apprenticeships and workshops starting from September onwards, and with prices typically being between 33% and 50% cheaper than colleges for leisure courses, it really is worth checking out. Whether you want to get fit, take up a new hobby, or improve your career options, you do not want to miss out on the opportunities available to you in over 30 different venues across Somerset.
“This year the new 24 plus learning loan from
the Government is making learning so much more accessible to adult learners who want to get ahead with their training.” Ade Bowen, Marketing Manager for Somerset Skills & Learning told us. “This Guide lists all our 19 plus apprenticeships, leisure learning and qualification courses for the whole year.”
Last month Ronnie Roach, one of their learners, won a prestigious learning award for her learning journey. Her experience as an adult learner has given her confidence and a new found thrill for life. Ronnie is currently visiting community groups talking about her amazing experience. If you are involved in a group and looking for a local, heart warming success story, call Ade on 01278 783057 or email [email protected] for more details.
The brochure will be available from the 1 July; also, look out for the mini guide in July’s edition of ‘Your Somerset’, free through you doors.

edible crop event held at marine coveOn 6 June the volunteers and Friends of Marine Cove spent a long day in the sun planting four of the beds with edible crops, in Marine Cove on Burnham’s historic esplanade. This community-led project was completed with funding received from Sedgemoor District Council’s Health Promotion Team.
The day itself saw six volunteers turn out to plant the first phase of salad crops. The garden will have set days throughout the summer to encourage the local community to enjoy the produce and
learn more about eating healthily.Jacqui Strong, Marine Cove Community Gardener said, “This event was a great success but we are still looking
for volunteers to help out the garden. If you want to join the friends of Marine Cove, get in touch via [email protected] or call 01278 435328.”
‘‘Sedgemoor was keen to support this project as a great opportunity for local volunteers to come together and learn how to grow their own food to create healthy meals for all the family”, said Lianne Clarke, Sedgemoor’s Health Promotion Officer. “This type of project benefits volunteers physically, mentally and socially, and allows the community to enjoy local green space whilst taking part in healthy and fun activities.’’
Marine Cove is hosting many other exciting events over the summer months. Coming up on the 6 July is ‘Scarecrow day’. We require unwanted old clothes for this event, any size or colour; from baby grows up to adults’ clothing! Bring the clothes along on the 6th or use the materials we have available on the day to ‘build your own’ scarecrow.
‘Building your own’ will be first come first served unless pre-booked via the contacts page at www.marinecove.org.uk. If anyone is able to donate any straw, this would add to the look! To donate clothes or straw please contact Jacqui Strong, Community Gardener via [email protected] or call 01278 435328.
