I am sure 2014 will offer even more variety and activities for us to support, including the Food Festival which is already in the making – maybe use this month’s recipe to get in touch with your baking skills! sedgemoor helps the engine room to growSedgemoor District Council has agreed to help the Engine Room with a further grant of £25000, which will allow them to improve and develop their services to the community. The Engine Room is an accessible community media centre located in Bridgwater’s High Street. It

encourages collaboration, champions innovative work, and fosters creative engagement, often with marginalised and isolated communities in Sedgemoor and the wider county. The grant will be a £25k match funding investment in The Engine Room to secure Arts Council funding of £260k for the redevelopment of 50/52 High Street, Bridgwater. This will enable the facility to expand its space and facility for creative business incubation and support, or community based training, production and broadcast, as well as for the creation of a local film and video educational archive.

The media centre is accessible to all ages and abilities, co-ordinates a wide range of activities, including the provision of a public coffee bar - with internet access and public facilities, such as a licensed cinema, studio and edit suites.

friends of marine coveThe volunteers would like to thank everyone for their support during 2013 and for the attendance of the Burnham and Highbridge Choral Society, The King Alfred School Youth Brass Ensemble and the soloists who performed at the recent carol event held in the garden. It was a lovely afternoon with the winter sun shining down on us. The programme is already underway including Easter Activities in the garden and the increasingly popular May Day celebrations returning for 2014. The next meeting for the Friends of Marine Cove is Tuesday 21st January at 6.30pm at The Round Tower Guest House (next to the garden). Thanks to Phoebe Pearce for her support during the past year. The first Saturday in the month starting in February will now be the regular gardening session, and the volunteers would welcome new helpers in the garden any time between 10am and 3pm (please wear appropriate clothing). Somerset Chamber Choir's next concert takes place on Sunday 5th January at King's College Chapel, Taunton at 3pm. recipe to get you baking into the new Year…Did you enjoy the social whirlwind of Christmas, or has it left you seeking the therapy of friends? Either way, these easy Italian soft biscuits are an ideal pick-me-up; they are easy to make and keep brilliantly, so you can have a tin full just in case someone pops rounds for a coffee and a catch-up. My new year's resolutions are to spend more time with friends and to eat more healthily, so I'm pleased to find that the biscuits happen to be incredibly good for us too.

Almonds contain lots of vitamins B and E and essential minerals in combinations that can have real health benefits. Did you know that combining vitamins E, B and magnesium can bolster your immune system when you are sick or stressed? And the monounsaturated fat in almonds can help decrease levels of LDL ('bad' cholesterol) and, combined with potassium, can really help

sort out a sore post-party head. Not quite therapy on their own, but surely this knowledge might make us feel a little better with every bite of these sweet treats in the coming winter days; after all, it's rare that a new year's resolution is so easy to stomach.Pasticci: soft almond or amaretti biscuits250g ground almonds / 200g caster sugar / 2 large egg whites

Whisk egg whites together then mix in dry ingredients. Pipe on to a silicone parchment or baking tray. Top each with an almond and leave to dry for 15 mins, while the oven gets up to heat. Set the oven to gas mark 2, 300F then bake for 15-20 minutes until they just start to brown on the outside but are soft inside. Dredge with icing sugar and store in a tin when cold.

If you'd like these to be more like soft amaretti, substitute 50g of almonds for plain flour and add half a teaspoon of almond essence to the mix before rolling gently into bite-size balls with sugar-dusted hands. perfecting your golf swingA great challenge with learning the golf swing (particularly if you are a cricketer), is the rotational action of the golf swing from an inclined position. As opposed to the tilting and rocking action of the cricket stroke (and when the ball can come at you at speeds over 90mph), in golf there is no ball energy to help you. A good drill to make sure you adopt the rotational action of golf, is to swing as if you were a baseball batter, as you will get used to this gradual bend from the hips until the club is swinging over the top of the ground.

The golf swing is a simple turn of the body away from the target and an upward swing of the arms, followed by a return of the body towards the target and a downward swing of the arms. This is quite simple; becoming overly complicated can cause confusion, so keep your concept as simple as you can. Your concept of how the golf swing works will have a major influence on how you swing the club. If your concept is not good you will have difficulty in having a consistent swing.

Follow this simple routine and develop a better shot making swing. Aim the clubface at your target. Bring your feet together in a parallel position to the club face on the ball target line. Hold your arms out in front of you at waist height, bend from the hips and allow your arms to hang freely, settling the club face behind the ball again, looking at the target. You should now be the correct distance away from the ball in relation to the club you are using. A final check would be to have your upper arms resting gently against your body. If you are using an iron, take small step to the left with your left foot and a bigger step to the right with your right foot. Certainly your feet should be no wider than your shoulders. When using a wood, leave out the small step to the left with your left foot.

Brean pantomime - coastline playersRehearsals are in full swing for February’s production of Peter Piper. the Bd Jazz clubThe BD Jazz Club is the local Burnham area Traditional/New Orleans Jazz Club. reminder about windows xpAs you may be aware, Microsoft is ceasing support for Windows XP from April 2014, so now would be a good time to think about either upgrading the Windows on the computer to a current edition, or possibly buying a new machine. The prospect of replacing a machine can be very daunting, but as long as a competent IT professional helps out, this should be pretty painless. Some people do run old software such as Microsoft Money, or family history software, but in many cases, this software can be re-installed on a new system without problem. Quite often we see that people use Outlook Express on Windows XP, which is a very popular e-mail system. This was replaced by a system called “Windows Live Mail” which can accept the data from Outlook Express as well as the contacts, as in many respects works the same as Outlook Express. Many of the old features work in the exactly the same way as on the previous e-mail system, so is very easy to use.

We have also seen a large increase in viruses coming into people e-mail, hidden within ZIP file attachments. ZIP files are compressed, so they mask the true nature of an attachment. Typically, the e-mail text will advise that you have missed out on something (i.e airline tickets, or a courier delivery) – people then open the zip file, and then the enclosed, only for a virus to attempt infection. Due to the variety of these zip attachments, anti-virus software does not always detect them, so please be very careful when you receive ZIP file attachments, in particular from an unexpected source or one that doesn’t mention you by name. These tend to start with “Dear Customer” and contain a generic message.

Do you dislike Windows 8 / 8.1? We hear of many comments to this effect from new customers, but find that with a short training session, people’s concerns can be easily remedied. In this New Year, how can the average family in Burnham on Sea make a difference and save money by wasting far less and recycling much more? Instead of promise-the-earth New Year resolutions – forgotten a week later – why not try down-to-earth reality in small steps that add up to a lot? A short list of commitments, and the people committed, might help, so why not have a family chat to decide how to go a bit green? You could also name and shame the worst rubbish makers and poorest recyclers before signing them up to do better. Among useful small steps, you could stop all that junk mail, avoid plastic by taking your own shopping bag, drink tap not bottled water, print less or on both sides, and keep scrap paper for notes.

One resolution could be to label a box “charity shop” and not let it get empty. Or hold a swishing party; everyone brings unwanted clothes and swaps them to find that new look for the New Year. A big challenge would be to save the £50-£60 a month the average family wastes on food thrown away. It costs Burnham’s council tax payers even more when far too much misses the food waste container and ends up in the rubbish bin.

Here is the one minute guide to love food, hate waste and save money: plan the week’s meals, then check cupboards, fridge and freezer to see what you already have or could use by adapting the plan.

Go shopping with a list and stick to it. After eating well, label leftovers in the freezer, scrape plates into the waste container, and use what you can – fruit and veg peelings, egg shells, coffee grounds, tea bags – in home composting.

Burnham dreamschemeThe Burnham Dreamscheme are actively looking for adult volunteers who are willing to assist with some of the projects running during the year.

These happen during the school holidays in order to encourage community involvement; local tasks are organised for the young people to get involved in, in return for points, which can be redeemed against fun activities. once upon a time in Burnham – LifeboatsIn 1836 two ships were bound from Cardiff for their home port of Bridgwater, when within a short time of each other they were driven onto the Gore sands by a strong north westerly gale. The master of the ‘Fame’, a third ship, lowered a boat with two of his crew to go to the aid of the crew of the ‘Margaret’, the first ship to strike and who were in extremis. Unfortunately they were too late to help their fellow sailors and having lost one of their oars, were unable to return to their ship and were at the mercy of the mountainous seas which swept them on to Burnham.

Captain was powerless to pick them up or go to the rescue of Captain Davidge and his crew on board the ‘Moss Rose’, which by this time was in an equally desperate situation, but once the crew of the ‘Fame’ were reunited, they prepared to row back out to the ‘Moss Rose’, as soon as wind and sea would permit, to where the captain and crew had lashed themselves to the mast to save them from being swept overboard. They had to wait for an ebb tide to attempt this difficult and dangerous operation, and it was around midnight when they reached the stricken vessel and took the crew off.

This tragic event, together with the heroic rescue of three crew members from the ‘Moss Rose’, is justly commemorated on a bronze plaque on the wall to the left of the jetty. It was also the spur to the establishment of Burnham’s first custom built lifeboat, presented to the Port Authority for use at Burnham, by Sir Perigrine Acland at a cost of over £60 (something in excess of £6,000 at today’s prices). This lifeboat was eventually replaced by a similar craft by the Port Authority before the first of the three RNLI boats arrived in 1860. Named ‘Cheltenham’ after the town whose people paid for it, she was succeeded by the ‘Philip Beach’ and the ‘John Godfrey Morris’. When the station closed in 1935, the building was bought as a headquarters for the local Scout troop; it is still standing on the corner of Marine Drive and is currently a bar.

Burnham was without any form of rescue vessel until 1994, when the Burnham on Sea area rescue boat (a hovercraft) was bought thanks to an appeal backed by the Western Daily Press, after a young girl, Lelaina Hall, was drowned at Berrow in 1992. The first craft was named ‘Spirit of Lelaina’. The RNLI returned to the town in 2003 with an Atlantic class inshore boat called ‘Staines Whitfield’. This boat and its subsequent companion (‘Puffin’) are housed in a large building immediately behind the old ‘Cheltenham’ boat house.

friends of apex park improvements groupThe community group who help at the Apex Park are desperately in need of help to plant 340 trees! The ecologist from Sedgemoor District Council has acquired a grant to purchase 300 native trees and 40 apple trees. The group need help from anyone who uses the park and can help to keep an eye on a tree - perhaps to unofficially 'adopt' one in memory of a loved one. Help with the planting would be appreciated - holes will be dug mechanically on Saturday 11th January or Sunday 26th January from 10 a.m. Please come along if you can. Our Chairman will be happy to take a photo of you with a tree. Other days for planting will be Saturday 8th February and Sunday 23rd February. marine cove vandalism- charges pressed against two local malesA 20-year-old man from Highbridge and a 19-year-old man from Burnham-on-Sea have been charged with criminal damage after an incident in Marine Cove on the 28th of October. They will appear at Taunton Crown Court later this month. The cost of the damage caused is in excess of £10,000. SDC has been working hard to try and ensure the gardens are soon back in top condition for residents and visitors to enjoy. SDC are working with four contractors to get the damage repaired. Works are expected to commence in the next few weeks with completion in the new year. Due to the specialist nature of some of the damaged items there is a 10-week manufacturing lead-in time.

over £40,000 of grant funding still availableOver £40,000 of Grant funding is available from Sedgemoor District Council before the end of the budget year. Both the re-launched Community Health Fund and Small Grants Scheme allow external applications for funding.

Through the re-launch of the Community Health Fund applications can be made to Sedgemoor District Council from 17th December for up to £1000 per health-focused project/activity. A total budget of £7,000 is available.

The Community Health Fund scheme can fund projects, classes or activities that fit into the broad themes of;• Physical Activity - increasing opportunities

for, and levels of, physical activity within Sedgemoor communities

• Health Eating – promotion of food growing, healthy eating, cooking skills, access to healthy foods.

• Weight Management- reducing levels of overweight/obesity within Sedgemoor communities Funding has to be allocated shortly

after the application deadline, therefore applications must be fully completed and passed to Sedgemoor District Council by 5pm on the 17th January 2014. The Community Health Fund invites applications from community groups, registered charities, churches, after-school clubs, leisure centres, Housing providers, activity clubs, children’s centres, Parish or Town Councils and workplaces.

Sedgemoor District Council also has £36,000 available in individual and project grants. This funding source is known as the Small Grants Scheme. These grants are available up to the end of the budget year; 31st March 2014. Up to £500 for individual grants, or £2500 for project grants, is available per applicant. The next Grants Committee is being held on the 28th January with an application deadline of 5:00pm on the 10th January. After this meeting the final application deadline for 2014 is 5:00pm on the 7th March with the Committee meeting being held on the 25th March 2014.

community safety survey 2013Between March and May 2013 Sedgemoor District Council sent out 5000 surveys to a random selection of households within the district. The survey asked resident’s for their views on crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB) in the local area. Surveys were also available from community centres, children’s centres, police stations, libraries,

Sedgemoor’s main reception and on Sedgemoor’s website. 1710 responses were received making the results statistically representative of the district. Here are the key findings of the survey:• 94% of residents feel safe at home during the day• 86% of residents feel safe at home after dark• 88% of residents feel safe in the town/village centre during the day• 53% of residents feel safe in the town/village centre after dark• Litter, dog fouling and fly tipping are the top three anti-social behaviour issues of concern to

residents.• Generally it is perceived that crime and anti-social behaviour levels had stayed about the same in

the previous 3 years • Only 19% of respondents felt that the presence of CCTV cameras in the district have no effect on

feelings of safety.• Cycling in Sedgemoor appears to make people feel less safe than travelling by car, bus or

walking.• 63% of respondents have not been a victim of crime themselves.So what are we doing?

Sedgemoor District Council’s Community Development and Wellbeing team are working closely with partner organisations, in particular Avon and Somerset Police, to reduce levels of crime and ASB and resident’s fear of crime and ASB.

Sedgemoor District Council are managing, or involved in a number of projects, to combat crime and ASB. Some examples of these projects are listed on the next page:

Keeping our communities safe in the town centres at night – we launched a responsible drinking initiative alongside an Emergency Services triage response-centre pilot. We are actively involved in the local Pub watch network & radio link scheme.

Allowing residents to report ASB - SDC have a 24hr ASB hotline and follow-up on reports of ASB. We take enforcement action where there is a statutory noise nuisance.• Educating young people- We have attended local schools to educate on the ills of dropping litter.• We monitor fly tipping statistics and take enforcement action where applicable.• We have dog wardens that patrol the district. Enforcement action is taken against dog owners

who do not pick up after their animals or whose dogs are making a noise nuisance.Safe transport routes- we are working with partners to support the provision of safe and

accessible cycling routes. We comment on public transport proposals, and work with public transport providers, to ensure adequate service provision.

We manage a 24-7 CCTV service which covers Sedgemoor and also monitors Taunton and Yeovil. Our CCTV team work closely with the Police to ensure they have the CCTV evidence required to press charges.

Councillor J Swayne Portfolio Holder for Community and Scrutiny commented ‘Sedgemoor District Council are pleased that the results show the majority of residents feel safe in their homes and in the local area. We will continue to work closely with other organisations and the Police to ensure that levels of crime and the fear of crime and ASB reduces’.

Avon and Somerset Police Inspector Nigel Downey said: ‘This survey has been useful in assisting us to further understand the concerns of the residents of Sedgemoor and we are fully supportive of the actions of the Council to address the matters raised. It is, and will remain, the ambition of Avon and Somerset Police to not only keep our communities safe, but ensure that people feel that Sedgemoor is a safe place to live. We understand that ASB has a huge impact on the quality of life of both individuals and neighbourhoods. We are committed to working with our partners to deal with it quickly, efficiently and robustly and to provide victims with the best service possible in bringing about positive and satisfactory solutions. Local police will continue to work closely with Sedgemoor District Council, and other partner agencies, in addressing any concerns of our residents. We urge you not to hesitate in contacting us should the need arise and to report incidents of ASB.’ Sedgemoor District Council will repeat the survey in March 2015.
