    BURSA, IN THE

EYES OFTRAVELERSBursa, renowned as "Green Bur-sa" due to its natural richness, greeneries, 833 monumental tre-es varying between ages of 100-

600, and curative thermalsprings, has been a focus of inte-rest for many historians and tra-velers as it is today.

Example; Dr. Bernard, upon co-ming to Bursa in 1940's describesthe city as follows:

"Bursa is a corner, where mostbeautiful nature of our world ispresented. The greenery andfreshness of spring, the sheerbeauty of the plains and fields, the beauty of its waters and air, fills one with joy. The heat of thesun lessens with the cool bree-zes of mountains. The Air ofBursa is very mild because plainsand fields are bathed with water

flowing down from the foots ofthe mountains.

Richard Pockocke describes theview he had seen in Bursa inthese words: "This mixture, com-posed of trees and mulberry tre-es generates the most beautifulview of the world".

According to George William,Bursa presents an attractive sightat every step for its visitors: "Thecity arises from a plain full of cy-

press trees. There are vine-yards, fig trees, black mulber-

ries, and tiny snow-whiteminarets rising as if from

    behind of every tree.

Overlooking all these beauties,Uluda stands like a monumentwith its steep cliffs. Whilst we re-

sume our march under the fami-liar sky of Anatolia, beneath sucha splendid sunset, among a co-lorful symphony of black mul-berries and cypresses blendingwith numerous colors of the sky,the rocks were getting pinkieralong with the fading of thelights. Everything is absolutely

    oriental, everything is absolutelyenchanting".

The scene Ekrem Reflit Rey des-cribed during the first years ofthe republic is not different fromthese: "Everywhere is matc-hlessly green in spring as if agreen sun is shining around. Youcan find every tone and shade of

green converging with each ot-her in this medley of greenery. When a traveler comes to Bursa,he all of a sudden feels himselfin a scene belonging to a fewcenturies past. This river of gree-nery, rustling with the slightestbreeze, is sensitive than a real ri-ver".

The scenes Miss Pardoe saw inBursa are far beautiful than theothers: "Never passed throughsuch a splendid city. Plains, ex-panding without limits, werespread towards the skirts of gi-ant-like trees. I had recited thebeauty of wild flowers in my litt-le book about Portugal. But here

I realized that Anatolian wild flo-wers are more beautiful thanthem. Picturesque flower sap-lings, herbs with indefinableodors, and trees with flowersfrom every colorwere li-

ned in our way. Lilac colored la-den trees with a golden spot inthe middle, snow-white henna

trees with their odorous coco-ons, wild althea flowers with fa-ded-pink and white-leafed mal-low flowers, sky-blue Turquoiseflowers like daisies, bee-hive flo-wers spurted out of the rocks, becoming more gorgeous withthe surrounding rocks as ifsymbolizing good, fighting aga-

inst harsh cruelties of evil; abright yellow flower called asthe "kaynanadili" (prickly pear)due to its ever-moving leaves.Wild roses, faded-pink coloredbut a little small (due to its culti-vation in Europe) love flowersand many more flowers we donot know were crammed the ro-ads and fields. The butterflieswere small. They had dark co-lors and there were many ofthem. The birds surrounding uswere of various kinds as well."

Von Moltke describes the BursaPlain as a fertile land with light-green leaves extending every-where as far as eye can see:

"The far away scenery of thesight is as magnificent as the cor-diality of the closer parts. Thegrapes in the flower fills the airwith an odor of mignonet-te flowers and thesmell ofabundanthoney-

suckles and a flower I dontknow, contributes to this sym-phony of odors. It is really very

difficult to decide which of theOttoman capitals, the surroun-dings of old one or the new one, namely surroundings of Bursa orIstanbul, is more beautiful. Istan-bul enchants people with its seasand Bursa makes the same effectwith its landscapes. One of themis ornamented with blue and the

other with green. Vines entanglearound giant trees' trunks andtheir branches. Then extends toearth again. Furthermore, thehoneysuckles and ivies withflowers plunge onto vines.Never seen such a vast and to-tally green sight except Lubenautower overlooking the

Spreewald. Moreover, the flora isricher here and there are greatmountains bordering the plain."

Yet another traveler namedBaptistin Poujoulat said, Bursawas like one of the extraordinarycities cited in fairy tales.RobertWalshs remarks about the cityare even more interesting:Nature has virtually createdBursa especially for the Turks.
