Chairman’s Message

Sadly the Coronavirus is still the headline, though it is good to see anotherrelaxation of the restrictions, with social distancing reduced to 1 Metre Plus.As we are seeing in the media, it is sad so many people are not observing therules and going headlong into activities, back to what we remember asnormality and gathering together in large numbers on beaches and citycentres, despite warnings not to do so.

It is so important to realise the virus is still out there and very dangerous, sowe must all strictly adhere to government regulations throughout, ensuringtotal observance, particularly when we begin to meet again in our groups. As I write this, we havejust received the latest guidance from our National Office which includes advice to all U3As. Youcan see that guidance by clicking on this link. It is important that as a U3A we keep everyonetogether, retain interest within our groups, both those which meet outside and inside, makingregular contact perhaps with a phone chat individually, or on line as a group.

Although Groups which meet outside, such as pétanque, walking, bird watching andgardening (at this time of the year) can begin to meet again subject to strict observanceof the virus regulations, those which meet inside are equally important. I am suggestingthose groups consider whether, during the summer months, they could meet outsidewhere appropriate, keeping to the limits on numbers and social distancing, though Iappreciate it may not be possible for all groups. At least it would bring some groups backtogether in the hope that, as the year progresses, conditions will become easier, enabling us to reach the stage of holding monthly meetings again.

There is discussion as to whether we can have a monthly speaker deliver their talk byZoom, so at least we would get together at a distance. I am assured connecting Zoom toour devices is an easy, straight forward procedure with advice available for memberswho might find difficulty in achieving this.

Please continue to stay safe and keep to the rules. With all good wishes.

Alwyn.

Drive On for older drivers

We recently had the following letter from a previous guest speaker at our monthly meeting:

How are you, I hope all is well.

I writing to you from Via East Midlands’ Road Safety team; you may remember we ran a Drive On sessionfor older drivers with Burton Joyce U3A back in March of this year, in the Village Hall.

Nottingham Castle Refurbishment

We have had two talks on the refurbishment of the castle and there is a regular Newsletterthat keeps us up-to-date. Click on the picture below to view this.

During current circumstances our driving habits may have changed and as we adjust to the roadsbeing busier and perhaps driving a little more frequently there are a few checks to make and tips tofollow.

Below is a link to some ‘lockdown bulletins’ produced by the Older Drivers Forum. We think these arevery helpful and cover many questions and worries that older drivers may have.

https://olderdriversforum.com/lock-down-safety-bulletins/

If you have any questions or require any further information please let me know. We are lookingforward to a time when we will be able to attend groups again and run more Drive On sessions.

Flowers in the lawn

So what do we do when we are “locked down”? Well, there are many options……. clean the windows, vacuumevery room in the house, mop the kitchen floor (again),phone family & friends, wave to the neighbours, read anovel, eat too much, watch TV ………….As the weather has been so wonderful (I intended to geton my hands & knees whatever the weather) I have takenpart in a Nation Survey of wild flowers in the lawn.

I have been interested in wild flowers since I was a child(age 3 apparently according to my parents, who boughtme my first wildflower book, which I still use), and I havecontinued my interest. I am a member of PlantlifeInternational, probably the most important Plant Charityin the world, and it is leading Britain’s biggest everbotanical survey of lawns “Every Flower Counts”. I quote

“Flowers in your lawn are producing vital nectar & pollenfor bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects”.

With 22 million gardens in the UK (sadly dismissed as wildlife deserts & regularly scalped toan inch of their life) there is potential possibility of producing impressive floral displays.

There is increasing calls to leave lawns unmowed. Theprogramme followed by many City & County Councils NOT tomow verges, supported by Alan Titchmarsh, is thriving.

Last year the total number of flowers identified was over 200species. In total 495,676 individual flowers were counted. Inmy garden I have identified 68 species.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to know how many species could beidentified in Burton Joyce U3A gardens?

Woodborough Open Gardens

The 28th June should have been the fourth Woodborough Open Gardens in aid of the NSPCC.Sadly due to the present situation it has had to be cancelled. However we have been able tophotograph and video some of Woodborough’s beautiful gardens for you to to see on line. Soclick on the picture below, and sit back and enjoy the gardens. Your donations to the NSPCCwould be greatly appreciated because in previous years this has been a great fundraiser for thisimportant charity

Groups News

This section of Newsline contains the Groups Facilitator's updates on recent changes to our Groups. It also has reports from the Groups themselves on their activities and any changes to their normalmeeting programme. Group Information is listed alphabetically on the last three pages ofNewsline, and fuller details on individual Groups are given on the “Our Groups” page on thewebsite: https://u3asites.org.uk/burton-joyce/groups

Book Group

This was our third Zoom meeting and we do still have technical difficulties at the beginning whichhave to be troubleshot (is that a word?) by him indoors – thank you Trevor. I wonder if there isanyone within U3A who would be able and willing to offer a tutorial or telephone support to enablemore groups to get going. I worry that our organisation is not going to have groups as we knowthem for some while yet and we are leaving a lot of our members out. I know that there are onlinetutorials but also know that some people require more handholding initially.

The History of Love by Nicole Krauss

This was a complicated, even difficult read but worth persevering with. It was essentially aboutlove: idealised love of partners, a child’s love for her mother and brother, and the love of the Jewishimmigrant for everything lost or left behind.

We know that the novelist is herself Jewish and that the book is dedicated to her grandparents whowere all born in Eastern Europe and from whence several of the characters fled during theHolocaust. Although incredibly sad, there were some humorous parts, especially where the maincharacter, Leo, does things to ensure he is noticed as he feels he has spent his life being invisible. Most of the characters in the novel are writers of some sort and it is as if, by writing, they givevalidity to their existence or to the love they once had.

The History of Love is about a book of the same name, and various translations and copies of it. Leowrote it for the one love of his life, Alma, who left Europe in the Jewish diaspora before Leo andwent to America, pregnant with his child. It takes Leo several years to get to her, by which timeshe thinks he has died as there has been no communication, and so she has married. He spendsthe rest of his life heartbroken.

Thanks to Chris Sheath for recommending this to us and for getting our brain cells working.

HWNN (Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Healthwatch), July 2020

On behalf of Nottingham & Nottinghamshire Healthwatch, I should like to thank all Burton Joyce& District U3A members who responded to the COVID-19 survey carried out recently by HWNN.

The survey into the information needs of people classed as vulnerable showed that informationwas not always reaching the people who needed it most.

As one of the HWNN volunteers involved in gathering information by telephone rather than online,I very soon sensed that a number of people, especially those caring for family members withlearning and/or behavioural difficulties or with dementia, needed someone to listen to them whilethey talked about their worries and their fears. The very active and supportive East MidlandsCarers’ Hub was subsequently able to connect or re-connect with them.

HWNN regularly carries out surveys of and investigations into aspects of the health and socialcare services in the region. The reports, all passed to the relevant local and national bodies forinformation and action, are on the HWNN website. The report of the COVID-19 survey can beaccessed by clicking on this link and clicking on Covid19 survey.
