SCHOOL CURRICULUM

BFS Offers a challenging US standards-based curriculum with additional international content aimed at preparing students for post-secondary studies in the U.S. and abroad.

U.S. national Standards and the USA based “Common Core State Standards Initiative” are our curriculum building blocks.

In grades K to 5 we have adopted Houghton Mifflin’s “Literacy by Design” and “Math in Focus: Singapore Math”, both highly effective, research-based programs.

Our high school includes several Advanced Placement courses in the humanities, math, and sciences.

“Understanding by Design” is the curriculum framework used by our certified teachers and all units of instruction are being archived in an online Rubicon Atlas curriculum mapping software. Teachers develop appropriate and engaging demonstrations of learning within each classroom and are supported by the school’s experienced administration. The active and authentic student-centered instructional model is paired with educational best practice teaching techniques by our staff to ensure each student a world-class quality education.

Almost 95% of BFS graduates go on to post-secondary studies, the majority of which attend high-ranking universities in the United States.

All staff is required to write and document curriculum in our curriculum map, Rubicon Atlas. Currently, we are in the business of populating the map. In 2015-2016, staff will discuss curriculum alignment and identify areas in need of support. Teachers are also expected to complete an annual professional growth plan - working with real classroom data to reflect and improve instruction. As is the case with many of our documents, BFS is a Google education school and much of our administrative footprint - including these professional plans - are archived within Google Drive accounts.

Instructional technology includes interactive whiteboards/SmartBoards in every classroom and a robust and stable WiFi system for all staff and students. All students Grades 6 - 12 bring their own laptops (device) to school (BYOD) and interact with digital texts and each other according to secondary lesson plans. Within our school library, teachers and students have access to 25 contemporary iMacs. Currently the school has 30 iPads for the elementary teachers and students to use daily. An instructional technologist, an Apple Certified Educator, has recently committed to a contract through at least June of 2017.

We are on 4 year curriculum review and procurement cycle - though monies have been allotted for the refreshment of current materials and courses. School instructional and capital products are often purchased in the United States and annually shipped here by our freight forwarder.

In the Fall and Spring, using the online NWEA MAP test, all students Grades 2 - 11 are tested in Mathematics and Reading. In 2015-2016 we will add Science testing to our MAP test program. These scores allow us to compare ourselves to USA normative data and provide instructors and administrators with information germane to the quality of current educational resources and instruction.

An ELL program, which includes both inclusion and small group models, is available for students who qualify in grades 1-12.

Busan Foreign School strives to offer a balanced program of academics, athletics, and arts. We believe that both academic and nonacademic life are equally important and helps to shape our students into model citizens of the world.

Elementary School students can participate in Soccer, Cross-Country, Track-and-Field, and Basketball. Both Middle School and High School divisions offer Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Cross-Country, and Track-and-Field. BFS also offers comprehensive programs for both music and arts from early childhood through 12th grade.

BFS competes in the Southern Korea Athletic Conference (SKAC) with several other schools in the region in both sports and non-athletic annual events such as Model United Nations, a Spelling Bee, and an Arts Festival.
