Bushey Meads News Issue 67 6th May 2016
Assisting the community Sara Ash, Assistant Headteacher
Two Year 12 photography students, Evie and Sarah,
have given up their time to visit Little Reddings
School to help them with their new school
prospectus. Evie and Sarah have been taking
photographs of various learning activities
across the school to help promote the
school to prospective parents.
Evie and Sarah have put
the skills learnt in the A
level photography lessons
to good use and have
produced some lovely
photos.
The favourite activity photographed was in reception where the
students were learning to care for baby chicks.
A valuable experience for Evie
and Sarah which also benefits
Little Reddings School.

Danielle Bowe - Lead Practitioner for English and Whole school Literacy
This week at Bushey Meads, we have been discussing the word antagonistic. This word can be applied in
biology, chemistry, PE and English, to name but a few!
Key Stage Three Exams are coming up! Mr Fisher – Assistant Headteacher KS3
Year 9 exams take place week commencing Monday 16th May
Exams for years 7 & 8 take place week commencing Monday 23rd May
There will be formal exams in the gym for the core subjects of maths, science and
English. A timetable for those exams will be published next week. Other subjects will
arrange classroom-based tests at normal lesson times.
Subject teachers will shortly provide revision lists, but in general terms the exams will consist of all content
covered this academic year.
Revise regularly. Create a timetable. Make notes and use highlighters. Then revise again by going over your
notes. Practise any exam style questions your teacher gives and follow all subject specific guidance.
Caroline Smart, Assistant Pastoral Manager KS3
During tutor time, students were asked to think about different scenarios they could find themselves in with friends
and to discuss how best to deal with these situations. Assembly time gave students the time to reflect on their own
friendships and to think about what makes a positive friendship. Students were also reminded how to access support
in school should they have any friendship worries. Ms Smart ended her assembly with asking students to think about
the statement that "in order to have good friends, you must be a good friend".
Mr Turner, Executive Principal
According to most of the Year 11 students I spoke to,
BMS saved the best until last! Some even said that the
Science Walking Talking Mock held on Thursday of last
week was “enjoyable” and “they could have stayed there
all day!” Whilst the environment was the typical
examination hall that the students will experience during
their real GCSEs in a few weeks’ time, the atmosphere
was very supportive with students being guided through
model answers to boost their confidence and chances of
real success in forthcoming exams.
Our hard working Head of Science Mr Bilton
made the important and serious raising
achievement strategy session ‘fun’ and even
told a few jokes along the way! The additional
staff – teachers and teaching assistants in the
hall were also very helpful and also helped
made the session a real success.
Exciting and Engaging Science
Lessons at BMS
Mr Turner, Executive Principal
It was a real privilege to walk through the Science Faculty
classrooms on Thursday of last week and see every single
student engaged, enthused and achieving highly. In Ms
Atchuthan’s top set Year 9 class the students had just
received their end of topic tests back and most of the
results were at A or A* grade. Ms Atchuthan was
explaining the different Science routes available at GCSE
level and students were clearly aiming for the very
highest grades. Hana’s test paper below indicates one of
those top A* grades.
In Mr Bilton’s lab students were conducting an experiment to make copper sulphate crystals – everyone
engaged, learning and enjoying the practical work.
In Miss Booth’s class Year 10 students were investigating Hooke’s law and were testing what happens to a
spring when increasing weights were added to the end of it. Carefully taking measurements, they were plotting
their results accurately on graph paper to see what the relationship is between the weights and the extending
length of the spring.
Our hard working A level Physicists were carefully
going through typical examination questions in Mr
Lipkin’s lab and were clarifying the key facts and
points that needed to be made to gain the most
marks possible.
Using their purple pens,
students in Ms Open’s class
were peer assessing each
other’s work and matching
their comments and targets
for improvement to clear
success criteria displayed on
the interactive whiteboard at
the front of the classroom.
Students in Ms Sutton’s darkened
lab were investigating wave
refraction through different shaped
prisms – marking the waves on
paper and seeing how the light path
changed as it passed through the
different glass blocks.
Year 10 GCSE Dance Showcase Evening Mr Turner, Executive Principal
Some Stakeholder Feedback about the evening………
Last Tuesday Evening was a truly spectacular evening – a real showcase for GCSE dance
and this new exciting curriculum area at Bushey Meads School.
Under the expert direction of Ms Rowden, the Year 10 students wowed the audience
for over an hour with some choreography that was at times simply breath-taking. The
150+ audience of staff, governors, students, parents and carers and family members
were enthralled.
Well done to all who were involved in making the evening so special.
Dear Mr Turner
The Year 10 GCSE Dance show was fantastic, it was
amazing to see the end result of my daughter's
passion, hard work and determination over the past
few months. As I mentioned, I think Miss Rowden is a
very good teacher with a great relationship and
balance with the girls. My daughter absolutely loves
her dance lessons.
Kind regards.
Year 10 Parent
Dear Mr Turner
Another really impressive evening, of which everyone involved
should be hugely proud. The GCSE students were excellent, and
it was another superb showcase for the Arts faculty, the
facilities, the tech team and the warm welcome that Bushey
Meads offers its visitors. Please pass on my congratulations to
all the students and staff who worked so hard to make it all
happen.
All the best,
Jon Davies –
Chair of the Governors Student Achievement Committee
Walking to School
Sara Ash, Assistant Headteacher
May has arrived at last and the launch of the Walk to School Week 2016 campaign. This
year the week commences on Monday 16th May and all schools nationally will be
promoting walking to school.
The idea is for as many people as possible to walk to school every day during Walk to
School Week in order to encourage an active lifestyle, promote better travel systems for
the environment and promoting exercise as a good stress reliever.
During the week we are holding a sponsored walk to school for students in Year 7, 8 and
9. All students that participate will receive reward points and all money raised will be
donated to Great Ormond Street Hospital and Dream Flights charity.
Students can choose to either:
• Walk the entire route to school
• Cycle to school (ensuring bicycles are secured with an appropriate lock)
• Scooter to school (ensuring scooters are secured with an appropriate lock)
• Walk part of the journey to school (park and stride initiative)
More information can be found at http://www.livingstreets.org.uk/ where you can also sign up to get tips on being healthier and
increasing the amount of walking you do each day.

COUNTY LEAGUE ATHLETICS
The summer extra-curricular competitive sports programme began in earnest last week with the first County League Athletics match
of the season. Athletics in Hertfordshire continues to be one of the strongest areas in the country with over 50 schools competing
in the County League. Over the summer the Junior and Senior Boys and Girls teams will compete in 6 matches at local athletics
tracks.
Match 1 took place at the Woodside Athletics Stadium against Habs Boys and Girls, Rickmansworth, St Joan of Arc and Bushey
Academy. The bitterly cold conditions made for a tough evening of athletics but as ever the BMS students showed great attitude
and effort across the range of events. We had 5 individual event winners on the night and also both Senior teams came 2nd overall
- a fantastic achievement. We will be closely following the team’s fortunes over the next few weeks and also encouraging all of our
competitors to try and improve on their personal best performances throughout the season.

House Music
Sycamore House were proudly represented in the House Music
competition by Amy, Thomas, Jack, Akhil and Dylan.
Thomas and Amy began proceedings with Thomas singing Ed Sheeran’s
“Thinking Out Loud” with Amy on guitar.
Then Amy sang “Love is a Losing Game” by Amy Winehouse, followed by the
choir song “Seven Years” by Lukas Graham.
Although we did not win, we can be very proud of the excellent performances given. The preparation required them
all to give up several lunchtimes, rehearsing the songs and remembering the lines.
Here’s to next year. Make sure you get involved and represent your house!
Charity Film Event We are currently asking form groups what film they would like to see shown in the hall after school for our Sycamore Film Evening.
All proceeds will go towards the MacMillan Cancer Fund. At the moment, Zootopia seems to be the most popular, but we want to
keep the votes coming in. Please let your form tutors know.
FIFA Tournament 7 Sycamore are currently organising a (computer game) FIFA football tournament. It will be done in- house first and then taken
forward to an inter-house tournament. Proceeds from this will go towards funding a new Sports Wheelchair for a Bushey Meads
Student. Students from Year 7 will be going round tutor groups drumming up support. Please get involved!
