Concepts What is animation? Modification of any
kind of object Light Material Camera
What can you change? Parameters
Position Rotation Scale
What parameters have been changed?
3ds max v7
3D Modelling Tools 5
Cameras Virtual cameras duplicate the
functions and controls of real-world cameras
What controls does a real-world camera have?
A. Focal lengthB. Field of View
3ds max v7
3D Modelling Tools 6
Focal length The distance between the lens and
the light-sensitive surface Lens size
28mm wide angled lens 50mm normal lens 85mm long focus and more….
3ds max v7
3D Modelling Tools 7
Field of view Field of View
the width of your view as an angle with its apex at your viewpoint and the ends at the sides of the view
Relates to the lens size 28mm wide angled lens
75o
50mm normal lens 40o
85mm long focus 24o

Creating cameras Target Free
3ds max v7
3D Modelling Tools 9
Free v. target A Free camera has a single icon to
animate The Target camera has two
the target the camera
You can switch between camera types, changing a Free camera to a Target and back again
3D Modelling Tools 10
Camera view Make the viewport
active then press C key The Viewport
navigation controls change
Different controls for cameras than for the Perspective viewport Dolly, pan, orbit
3D Modelling Tools 11
Free camera? Try positioning a fre
camera……. Use a Target first
and then modify it to a Free
3ds max v7
3D Modelling Tools 12
Moving cameras 1 Pan
Rotates the target about the camera
Tilt or orbit Rotates a camera
about the target
3ds max v7
3D Modelling Tools 13
Moving cameras 2 Dolly
Moves the camera and/or its target along the camera's main axis
Truck Moves the camera
parallel to the view plane

3D Modelling Tools 14
Animating a camera Following a moving object Moving a camera along a track Panning Orbiting Zooming Creating Animated Cutaway Views
You can animate the creation of a cutaway view by animating the location of the near or far clipping planes, or both. 3ds max v7
3D Modelling Tools 15
Following a moving object The Look-At constraint makes the
object replace the camera’s target or
Link a target camera’s target to the object

3D Modelling Tools 16
Moving a Camera Along a Path Create architectural walkthroughs Car rides If the camera must bank or tilt close to the
vertical (as on a roller coaster), use a free camera
Assign the Path constraint directly to the camera object The camera follows the path, and you can adjust its
point of view by adding pans or rotate transforms This is comparable to filming with a hand-held camera.
For a target camera, link both the camera and its target to a dummy object
Assign the path constraint to the dummy object This is comparable to mounting the camera on a tripod
on a dolly 3ds max v7

Panning You can animate the pan of any
camera very easily by following these steps: Select the camera Activate the Camera viewport Turn on the Auto Key button and
advance the time slider to any frame Use the Pan button (in the viewport
navigation tools) and pan3ds max v7
3D Modelling Tools 18
Camera orbit Select the camera Activate the Camera viewport Turn on the Auto Key button and
advance the time slider to any frame Use the Orbit button (in the viewport
navigation tools) and orbit The target camera revolves around its
target The Free camera revolves around its
target distance3ds max v7
3D Modelling Tools 19
Zooming Zooming moves toward or away
from the camera’s subject matter by changing the focal length of the lens
It differs from dollying, which physically moves the camera but leaves the focal length unchanged
3ds max v7

Portfolio 8 Use Portfolio 7 Add a target camera to your model
to follow the car Add a free camera to your car to
show the driver’s view Produce an A4 sheet with 8 small
jpegs showing the view from the 2 cameras with the car at different positions on the track
3D Modelling Tools 21
Questions List and describe three different
methods of animating a camera and recommend one for a walk through of a model
List and describe two different camera types, give and justify a choice of one for use with an avatar in a game
