International DayEach year, the Business School hosts an International Day. A meaningful international experience does not necessarily require travelling abroad as we have a hugely diverse and international campus here in Edinburgh.

Our latest event focused on Internationalisation at Home, where we ran workshops on cultural intelligence (CQ), and hosted a Human Library event (http://humanlibrary.org), where attendees had the opportunity to borrow a human book from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds, and speak freely with and learn from real life interactions. International Day is an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of cultures different to our own.

Other opportunities to go abroadEvery year at the Business School we find new ways for our students to benefit from an international experience - in the last 2 years, our students have been to India to explore the fashion industry.

The 2019 India Trip was designed by the Business School and Edinburgh College of Art, with the support of Edinburgh Futures Institute, and was open to all 3rd year undergraduate students. Students started their trip in Gujarat with visits to farmers and artisans at the beginning of the value chain, and culminated in discussions with experts at the very top of the value chain, including visits to Vogue India and the House of Anita Dongre – a leading Mumbai fashion house. Over the course of the week, students were working within multidisciplinary and internationally diverse groups to research, develop and create a multimedia project.

17

• Over 100 exchange placesavailable to Business Schoolstudents each year.

Alumni profile

Business is an intrinsically practical concept so I was drawn to the programme as it was a very practical degree that involved a substantial amount of engagement with real businesses and employers, which complemented the theory. The Business School recognises the importance of providing as many chances as possible to jump in and gain tangible commercial experience. Talks from entrepreneurs, live consultancy projects for small and large businesses, and support for students setting up their own businesses and projects were all examples of that.

Edinburgh as a city – and the degree to which the School is engrained in the fabric of the city – also certainly swayed my decision to come. Very few cities offer the same student experience that Edinburgh does!

I am currently enrolled at law school in London to undertake legal conversion courses before joining Macfarlanes LLP, a corporate law firm in London as a Trainee Solicitor.

Get ready for Business!Key to performing well in a business, accounting and/or finance related degree is being curious about, interested in, and engaged with the world around you and in particular how business fits into that world, the contribution it makes and the many challenges faced. We encourage you to read broadly and to look at business stories from different journalistic and reporting angles and through the lens of different medias (newspapers; podcasts; radio; social media; memoirs) and international perspectives.

We’ve put together a list of resources to get you thinking about your degree before you arrive:

• BBC

• Financial Times

• The Times (Business)

• Telegraph

• The Guardian

• TED Talks

Additionally, there are various other good quality international press or media outlets. Be selective in what you read, choosing a diverse range, to develop a general awareness of what is going on in the global world of business – what are the headline stories?
