What a great day for Cork city and in particular the business people of Oliver Plunkett Street when the news

reached us that Cork had fought off the challenge of London and Liverpool to see its second street, Oliver Plunkett Street win a major award for The Best Street in the UK and Ireland 2016. Oliver Plunkett Street was one of three finalists competing for The Great Street Award 2016 along with Deptford High Street in London and Cairns Street in Liverpool. The judges at the Academy of Urbanism in the UK have chosen Oliver Plunkett Street as the winner – coming exactly 300 years since the street was originally laid out in 1715. The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Chris O’Leary was in London with members of the Oliver Plunkett Street business community to receive the award and welcomed the prestigious award- the first time the award has been won by an Irish city as a real coup for Oliver Plunkett Street and Cork. The judges of the Academy of Urbanism looked at the social, cultural economic, political and physical development of villages, towns and cities across the UK, Ireland and Europe before deciding on the ultimate winner of the award. Geoff Haslam, lead assessor for the Academy of Urbanism said the judges were overwhelmed by Oliver Plunkett Street as it offered everything they were looking for in ‘a Great Street’. “We sometimes have to search for the DNA of a street, but Oliver Plunkett Street exudes it - it’s a vibrant living street and community, full of little surprises,” he said. Fellow assessor, Alastair Barr said that in the six years of judging awards, Oliver Plunkett Street had really “raised the bar” for the other two finalists in Liverpool and London. The group behind entering the Cork street in the competition, the Plunkett Street Quarter said they were delighted to receive the award just two years after their establishment. Founder member, Valerie Finnegan Cahill of IKON Hair Design and Clodagh Daly of John Daly Opticians said they were “absolutely delighted” and they were all extremely proud of the historic yet contemporary

street and they paid tribute to the traders, Cork City Council and the Cork Business Association who had collaborated closely on the project to secure the win for Cork.

John Minihan of Minihans Pharmacy who themselves are celebrating 60 years in business on the street this year said “It is a tremendous achievement and one that will really set Oliver Plunkett Street apart for others and also allow the street progress in new ways that will enhance trade and above all the customer experience for everyone who visits the businesses of the street”. John X Miller, CEO of Cork Civic Trust said “I am delighted that Oliver Plunkett Street has been recognised in this way and it really shows that when you have people, buildings and atmosphere that are exceptional, that you can achieve everything”.

Developing a successful strategy

Successful investors always use a methodTheir methods may differ but they always have a structure for choosing their investments. To narrow

down your list of potential purchases you should consider the following:

Invest in a small amount of large successful companies, adding to them over time•

Build a straightforward portfolio that is easily understood•

Be very wary of non-equity investments such as options, futures etc...•

Follow the Warren Buffet philosophy of buying companies with a strong franchise or near •monopoly market position

Excellentcompaniesgenerallyhaveastrongcashflowandanexcellenttrackrecordofprofit•

Large companies tend to have the above traits more than smaller ones. However smaller ones, •which have them, could be long term winners

Never invest without garnering as much information as possible•

Bank of Ireland shares have come a long way since they were featured as my Broker Pick in Equity Insight on 17 November 2011, at a lowly 8.7 cent. The shares reached a high of 39 cent earlier this year and have fallen back in the

recent bout of market turbulence. Has the recovery in the shares run its course, or is there more to follow? In my opinion, most indicators point to the latter. During the 2003 – 2007 bull market (turned bubble), Bank of Ireland shares hit a high of €18.45 in February 2007. At that time the bank had just under one billion shares in issue, so the market capitalisation

was about €18 billion. The shares have since been massively diluted by two huge rights issues at 55 cent and 10 cent respectively. This has increased the number of shares in issue to 32.3 billion. At the time of writing the shares are trading at 32.5 cent, giving the bank a market capitalisation of €10.5 billion. Apply a discount of 30% to the bubble valuation of

2007of€18billion,andthisresultsinanadjustedmarketcapitalisationof€12.6billion.Dividethatfigurebythenumberof shares in issue of 32.3 billion, results in a valuation of 39 cent per share. A return to the 39 cent level could therefore

consitute a completion of the recovery story, based on the above analysis. However the stock would still have potential for growth, as earnings are likely to grow broadly in line with the Irish economy. Also a restoration of the dividend next year would act as a strong signal to international investors that the Irish banking crisis is at an end. Those of us closer to

home expect that this glorious moment will occur around the very same time that the Committee to Inquire into the Irish Banking Crisis issues its report! This company is viewed as a buy at the time of writing. The views expressed in this article

COVER STORY

The Cork Business Awards 2016 will be the largest business awards event in Cork City and County with the largest prize fund and number of awards. The event is benefitting from its 10th year in honouring Cork business people and from 2016 it will incorporate a series of new categories in an expansion of its awards programme that is consistent with the expansion of Cork from a business and employment perspective. The most influential of business leaders in Cork will be in attendance at The Cork Business Awards 2016 and over 500 guests will attend the black tie event with senior Government Ministers in attendance and representatives of the Diplomatic Corps, the Irish Defence Forces and representatives of all elements of business, civic, cultural and educational life in Cork and Ireland will be invited.

The Cork Business Awards 2016 will have the largest prize fund of any business awards in Cork and will be €100,000. The date is set as Saturday May 28th 2016 and the venue is the Rochestown Park Convention Centre attached to Rochestown Park Hotel which is one of Cork’s finest business hotels. Business Cork magazine which is the leading business magazine in Cork is the promoter of The Cork Business Awards 2016. The name of the key Guest Speaker for The Cork Business Awards 2016 will be announced in early 2016 and is a US based businessman with local connections and whose career path will be of major interest to all Cork businesses and who sold his company in May 2015 for $21billion.

The Publisher of Business Cork and organiser of The Cork Business Awards 2016 Michael Mulcahy said “I believe it is the right time to expand the awards programme that I created nine years ago into a more diverse awards programme that allows the 45,000 Cork businesses be part of it. We have looked very carefully at the categories and ensured that all areas of Cork business, social, civic, voluntary and charitable life can be included and in particular that the awards will honour Cork business people who deserve to be recognised. For the first time also we intend to make an award per town for a business in every town in Cork and this is ensuring that we embrace the view that Cork as a location has the exceptional potential to market itself as a region of 500,000 people with an exceptional city and county that works cohesively together. We will be working with some great sponsors for these awards and essentially

ensuring that every part of Cork is recognised”.

CORK AT A GLANCE

A GREAT DAY FOR CORK WITH 5,000 JOBS NOW AT APPLE IN CORK

Apple has announced that it will expand its Cork campus and make room for 1,000 additional employees by 2017. The US tech giant is set to expand its campus in Hollyhill, Cork and add a new building that will provide new office space and room for 1,000 additional employees by mid-2017. The company’s CEO Tim Cook was in Ireland for the announcement. He received the gold medal of honorary patronage from Trinity College Dublin’s University Philosophical Society during his visit. Apple opened its Cork facility in 1980. It is estimated that Apple supports nearly 18,000 jobs across the country, including over 5,000 direct Apple employees. An Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD said of the news, Apple’s plans for new facilities at their Cork campus that can house a further 1,000 jobs is a very welcome boost of confidence in Cork and the South West region. It is also a welcome sign of broadening regional recovery. These new jobs come on top of 1,000 additional jobs already

created at Apple in the past 12 months, which brought the workforce in Ireland to over 5,000 in 2015. He said the continued expansion by the company “is testament to the quality of the talent pool, the infrastructure and the business environment that this country has to offer and further cements Apple as one of the leading employers in Ireland”. Tánaiste Joan Burton TD described the news as “a profound statement of confidence in Ireland’s economic recovery, and a profound statement of belief in the talent and creativity of the Irish workforce”. Minister

for Jobs, Enterprise & Innovation Richard Bruton TD described Apple as an iconic global brand. “Through our Action Plan for Jobs we have been determined to support more employment in companies like Apple, through measures like extra IDA staff in overseas markets and increased numbers of trade missions, and we have seen major employment growth over recent years,” he said. He described the announcement as “a huge boost for Cork and for all of Ireland”. Martin Shanahan, CEO of IDA Ireland said that for any company to be located at the same campus for over 30 years “is a remarkable thing”. The scale of the operation in Hollyhill is vast, with manufacturing, supply chain, AppleCare and shared services operations taking place within one campus. This news follows an announcement by Apple in February of this year where they revealed plans to put an €850 million data centre in Athenry. ICT Ireland, the Ibec group that represents the high-tech

NOVEMBER BUSINESS CORK

11

sector, said the creation of 1,000 new jobs by Apple “highlights Ireland’s continued attractiveness for major investment by tech companies”. Apple has also announced that it is partnering with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland to support research in offshore energy technology and is establishing a €1m Ocean Energy Industry Fund. This is to support new ways of capturing

wave energy and converting it to renewable electricity. Apple has pledged to power all its facilities

with renewable energy. Minister Alex White welcomed Apple’s support for innovation in ocean energy, saying, The west coast of Ireland is recognised as having some of the best wave resources in the world and I warmly welcome this agreement between Apple and SEAI to help harness this renewable source of energy. This is an excellent achievement for Ireland and shows

that when it comes to ocean energy development, Ireland is definitely open for business. There was a warm welcome from all Cork agencies, politicians and business leaders for the 1,000 extra jobs at Apple in Hollyhill and one of the strongest advocates of the announcement was local Councillor Kenneth O’ Flynn who said “this is an

outstanding day for Cork and one that we should reflect on carefully as it says clearly that Cork is as capable

as Dublin at attracting the large multinational brands to its shores. However, whether we are doing as much as other counties to attract such brands or whether agencies are pushing Cork as much as they should be is questionable in my mind and I would like to see the establishment of an all Cork agency to be known as The Cork Hub which would have a specific remit in going out and marketing Cork as a region for the attracting of new large scale industry. We should be approaching the likes of PayPal, Google, Stripe and many others and should be seeking to offer then 4th and 5th generation office space in our city centre, which is where they want to be. I will be bringing my proposal to Cork City Council as soon as possible and looking for all party support to ask the Chief Executive Ann Doherty to see if Cork City Council can become involved in promoting The Cork Hub”.

ECONOMIC BRIEFING IN CORKBusiness leaders and commercial interests will meet on Tuesday 24th November at The Clarion Hotel, Cork, to explore the extent of the economic recovery in the regions of Ireland, with a specific emphasis on the Cork region. With David Murphy (Business Editor, RTÉ News) facilitating the discussion, the event is hosted in The Clarion Hotel Cork. The findings of a recently compiled report on the economic recovery indicators from Seamus Coffey, Economist at UCC Cork, will be presented, with comment and analysis from the heads of two of the region’s largest employers, Bob Savage (Vice-President & MD at EMC Ireland) and Jim Woulfe (CEO of Dairygold). Entitled ‘To what extent has the Recovery spread around the Regions – special focus on Cork’, the breakfast briefing will facilitate audience participation, and is expected to bring clarity and sound analysis of the current economic indicators, highlighting the opportunities and challenges that face businesses today, with particular reference to the SME’s sector in Cork.

HUGH MCKEOWN AWARDFormer Chairman of the Musgrave Group, Hugh Mackeown, was presented with an Outstanding Achievement in Business Award at Cork Chamber’s Dublin Dinner, held in partnership with EY at the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel recently. Speaking from the event Barrie O’Connell, President of Cork Chamber said “Tonight is the 5th year of this event and we are hosting 550 guests from across the business and political communities of Dublin and Cork, providing an opportunity for companies to network and strengthen connections with their peers. We have the great honour of An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny T.D. addressing the guests and sharing his views on the future of doing business in Ireland. More specifically we are delighted to add Hugh Mackeown to the roll call of business leaders that have been honoured by Cork Chamber including Sean O’Driscoll of Glen Dimplex Group; Brian McCarthy of Fexco, Darina Allen, Ballymaloe and Leslie Buckley of INM, Digicel and Saongroup. Hugh Mackeown has been the driving force behind the growth and development of the Musgrave Group for over forty years, serving in that time as Managing Director, Chief Executive and Chairman. During his executive career Mr. Mackeown oversaw the introduction and rollout of the iconic SuperValu and Centra brands, initially with 49 stores in 1979 growing to some 660 stores today, developing it beyond its cash and carry heritage to become the sophisticated retail partnership model that exists today. The business, under his stewardship, has significant presence in Northern Ireland and Spanish retail sectors and has grown turnover from €7m to in excess of €4.6 billion and supporting some 45,000 jobs. This is a real Cork success story”, John Higgins, Partner EY commented. “The importance of family businesses to Ireland’s economy is crucial. Family businesses employ over 50% of all workers in the private sector. Of the more than 200,000 SMEs in Ireland employing around 850,000 people, over 80% are estimated to be family businesses. Dating back to 1876, Musgraves demonstrates the success that home grown Irish businesses can have on the economy. Employing over 60,000 they continue to go from strength to strength providing employment across Ireland. In a recent survey EY carried out with our EY Entrepreneur Of The Year community, high tax rates and difficulties in attracting skilled labour are key challenges facing Irish entrepreneurs. We - business, government, funders and educators need to take collective responsibility and connect to foster a collaborative environment to ensure we create the right ecosystem for home grown businesses to succeed.

Now anybody with a PC that connects to the Internet can become part of a SETI supported project called SETI@home. This harnesses the spare computing cycles or computing capacity of computers connected to the Internet around the world. Currently there are over 3 million people and computers in more than 220 countries participating. In effect collectively these computers have become one large super-computer known as a Grid Computer. The result being that it is one of the most powerful computers on the planet (25 teraflops). To-date the project has clocked over half a billion years in computing time and deals with 15 million signal reports each day. An article in the New Scientist reported that the SETI@home project had identified a signal that might be the first strong evidence for extraterrestrial intel-ligence. However, the head of UC Berkeley SERENDIP SETI project says the story is misleading and they are not impressed by the signal. If you want to participate go to the web-site www.seti.org and simply download the SETI@home screensaver software. Then when your computer goes into screensaver mode, that is when it is idle, the screensaver software runs a background program to scan and analyse chunks of radio data sent to it over the Internet. Your computer does not need a constant connection to the Internet because when it is connected it can download enough data in a few minutes to keep it occupied for days. A 5 Mb/Sec data stream from 13 radio-telescope feeds is connected to a super-fast (Linux based) digital data recorder donated by Hewlett-Packard Company. This in turn feeds the individual computers of the Internet Grid Computer. However, SETI@home currently searches only a narrow 2.5Mhz band among the billions of potential bands in the electromagnetic spectrum. Despite rigorous check-ing of all signals to date Dan Werthimer, at Berkeley Space Science Lab, says that we are still peaking around the edges of the Cosmic Haystack and we are probably 20 to 30 years away from a thorough search. He believes that the universe is teeming with life and within current lifetimes we will find the solid evidence that we have been looking for.

Fermi’s ParadoxHowever, if our galaxy and the universe are teeming with civilizations why then have they not made contact or why have we not been able to detect them? There is no evidence of interstellar machines of advanced civilizations spreading throughout the galaxy! This lack of evidence and contact was posed by the late Enrico Fermi, win-ner of the Nobel Prize for Physics, with his simple question “where is everybody?” This question has popularly become known as “Fermi’s Paradox”. There must be a way to explain the silence and our loneliness in a galaxy and universe that we as-sume is filled with other intelligent beings. Some answers to rebuff Fermi’s Paradox include: they were here and left no evidence; the Earth is a form of protected “zoo”; they have not yet reached us; the limits of space travel cannot be overcome; they do not want to communicate; catastrophes - civilizations have only a limited lifetime and we are the last; we are the first; we are unique. Marvin Minsky, regarded as the father of artificial intelligence (AI), pointed out that Shannon’s Law states that, efficiently coded communications are indistinguishable from random noise if the coding scheme is not known, therefore they are signaling but we don’t know how to listen.

Arecibo MessageThis was a once off digital signal in binary form which encoded a representation of an astronomical and biological description of Earth and human life form in simple graphic format that was transmitted to outer space to mark the re-opening on 16 Nov.1974 of the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico. It was devised by Frank Drake and Carl Sagan and others. It consisted of a number of simple parts including the depiction of the numbers from 1 to 10, the atomic numbers of the elements in DNA, the structure of DNA, a simple graphic figure of the human shape, and a graphic of our solar system indicating earth where the signal originated from.Since then many messages of various form from various locations on Earth have been sent, however, whether this should be done or not continues to be debated by scientists and astronomers.

The Pioneer Plaques and the Voyager Golden RecordsIn 1972 Drake and Sagan designed the first physical message on a plaque sent into space on board the Pioneer 10 spacecraft (and also on 1973 Pioneer 11). The gold-anodized plaques consisted of male and female nude figures along with a number of other symbols including information about the origin of the spacecraft. The space craft were the first human-built objects to have achieved escape velocity from our solar system. The Voyager Golden Records are basically gold-plated copper phonograph type records (with stylus) that were placed on board Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft launched in 1977. NASA appointed a committee chaired by the late Carl Sagan to decide and select the contents of the record. These included 116 images encoded in analogue form such as photographs and diagrams and a variety of sounds such as, music, spoken languages, natural sounds, sounds of birds and animals. The record’s cover is made from aluminum which contains a isotope of Uranium which by its rate of decay could be used by any civilization that encounters it to calculate its age. Carl Sagan referred to it as “this bottle into the cosmic ocean”. On Sept. 12, 2013 Voyager left the Solar System and entered interstellar space.

Breakthrough Listen and MessageThe Russian entrepreneur and billionaire Yuri Milner, who made his fortune through tech investments, along with physicist Stephen Hawking recently an-nounced a new initiative in the search for intelligent life in the universe. With this project called, Breakthrough Listen, Milner is providing $100 million funding to conduct a state-of-art radio and optical survey of the millions of stars in the Milky Way using the world’s largests telescopes. A second initiative called Break-through Message will fund an international competition to develop the content of messages to be sent from humanity on Earth to alien civilizations if they exist on other worlds. The competition is open to everyone and will have a total of $1 million in prizes.

Type I, II, and III CivilizationsWhat are the possible different levels of existence that search for extraterres-trial intelligence can expect to find? In a seminal paper published in 1964 in the Journal of Soviet Astronomy Russian astrophysicist Nicolai Kardashev proposed a simple method to classify advanced civilizations. He maintained that they could be grouped into three types, which have respectively mastered planetary, stellar and galactic forms of energy. He calculated that the energy consumption of these types of civilization would be separated by a factor of many billions. In his scheme extraterrestrials would have one of the following levels of technology.Type I, have control of the energy resources of their planet. In this scheme the Earth although a Type 0 civilization is in the process of becoming a Type I civilization. Type II civilization have control of the entire energy output of a star. The well-known physicist and mathematician Freeman Dyson speculated about star-encompassing Type II technologies that could capture solar energy, these have become known as “Dyson Spheres”. Type III civilization have con-trol over many star systems in the galaxy. It would be type II and III civilizations that would be most noticeable by SETI. If this happens then be prepared for the “greatest discovery of civilization”. But should we respond? Seth Shostak, Director if the Centre for SETI Research believes that much of the ET life out there is light years beyond the intelligence of man, “it might not be biological anymore but some artificial form of life”. Do we really want to communicate? Maybe we should just LISTEN but STAY QUITE!!

ARE WE ALONE IN THE UNIVERSE?

Payroll is a complicated, mandatory business function for any business. For retailers, it is even more complex. You have employees on salary and you have employees on hourly rates, scaled and overtime rates. Not to mention shift changes or no-shows.

All this complexity adds to the time and cost it takes to do payroll.

Here are seven areas to consider about whether to continue with your in-house payroll or outsource it to an accountant who specialises in payroll processing.

7 Good Reasons to Leave your Payroll to the Professionals

1. Cost of Payroll

Payroll can be costly to your retail business from a time perspective. Gathering information about employee’s hours, shifts, shift changes, holidays, overtime and individual benefits takes time.

Analyse how many hours are spent gathering information for payroll, preparing the payroll and running the payroll. Include the admin hours of filing tax returns, distributing wage-slips and answering queries from employees.

2. Efficiency of Finance Staff

If you do the exercise as outlined in step no. 1, you will find that payroll is a time-consuming exercise.

If you have an in-house accountant or accounts clerk doing your payroll, imagine taking away those hours of doing the payroll and spending it more productively on preparing and analysing your day to day and monthly accounts. Keeping up to date with your financials will help give you a great overview of how your business is performing.

3. Accuracy of Payroll

The onus is on you as the employer to ensure the correct amount of taxes (PAYE, PRSI, USC, LPT) are deducted and returned to the Revenue on time. Getting it wrong opens you up to trouble with Revenue. You don’t want to be liable to pay Revenue penalties and back pay for making a payroll mistake, not matter how small.

It’s also your responsibility that all staff are paying the correct amount of relevant taxes and all your returns are filed (P35 on 15th February) and P60s at the start of 2016.

4. Sick Pay and Disability Pay

Sick & disability pay is one of the most complex areas when processing payroll. In the retail sector, due to the

nature of employment, it’s even more complicated. For example, where an employee is entitled to sick pay from the Department of Social Protection, that amount is now taxable and must be entered in the payroll system. The onus is on you to ensure all payroll deductions are correctly applied.

5. Holiday Pay Entitlements

Similarly, not all holiday pay is created equal. Holiday pay could be calculated at 8% of hours worked, 4 weeks off or one third of a working week. And you need to know what days are considered ‘working hours’. For example, sick hours are not included but maternity leave and parental days are.

6. Continual Training and Best Practice

Anyone who processes your payroll must be continually trained in payroll. Every year, there are new changes introduced in the budget which affects payroll. Most recently, the property tax now goes through the payroll system.

Confidentiality is of key concern when processing payroll. You must have 100% peace of mind that best practices are in place. When you outsource, that confidentiality is guaranteed.

7. Contingency Planning

Payroll is a function that needs to be done on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis. There is no exception. If your employee who processes payroll is out sick for a few days, then your payroll and your employees will be affected.

To conclude, it’s really your decision to continue with payroll in-house but another alternative is to outsource to the professionals so make sure it’s an informed one. For most businesses, your wage bill is your biggest bill, so it’s important to get it right.

Seabrook Technology Group, a wholly Irish-owned manufacturing software specialist, has announced its partnership with Siemens Industry Software in Ireland and the UK. The partnership enables Seabrook to offer Siemens’ de facto standard PLM (Product Life Cycle Management) software to its new and existing clients in Ireland and in the UK. This partnership will strengthen Siemens distribution of the Teamcenter Product Life Cycle Management software in Ireland and ensure Ireland’s transition to digitized manufacturing.

The announcement was made at Enterprise Ireland’s high-profile showcase for medical device and diagnostic products, MedinIreland 2015, officially opened by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD.The partnership is expected to generate revenue of over €1 million Euro in the first year to eighteen months for Seabrook. It will lead to the creation of eight new high-level jobs, six at its Cork offices and two in the UK. The technology firm has been operating in Ireland for 26 years. Over the past three years it has tripled its workforce and expanded into the US, with offices in California and Indiana. Welcoming the announcement Taoiseach Enda Kenny said: “Seabrook is a great example of a highly innovative, export-focused, Irish software company with a world-class product offering in the medtech sector. Seabrook’s partnership with Siemens PLM Software is a testament to the quality of their product offering which has seen the company grow its workforce and expand into global markets while this announcement today will create an additional six new high level jobs in Cork. I would like to congratulate both companies on this exciting partnership and wish them continued success for the future”. Siemens PLM Software’s digital technology is transforming manufacturing and allows clients to develop and optimise products on an entirely virtual basis. The software effectively ‘closes the loop’ in the manufacturing process; it enhances and integrates every aspect of the process, from planning and development through to production and support. The PLM industry is predicted to be worth US$50.7 billion by 2017. (CIMdata). Commenting on the news, Seabrook Technology Group CEO and founder Sean O’Sullivan said, “Seabrook welcomes this very significant partnership with Siemens PLM software. We are pleased to be at the helm of rolling out this pioneering technology, which will be especially beneficial to pharmaceutical and medical device industries. PLM ensures improved traceability of products and will have an immediate positive effect for the consumer or product end-user, who with the global lean towards wearable medical devices, are demanding greater transparency in product production.

INTERVIEW: GARVAN CERASI

Tell us about The LogiSkills Group?

The Logiskills Group is a multi award winning staffing specialist dedicated exclusively to the sourcing and retention of the best available talent within the Supply Chain Sector.

Established in 2004, the group has rapidly grown to become Irelands only dedicated staffing specialist for companies engaged in the manufacture or movement of product.

You have recently opened a new Cork office. Is there a growing market for you in Cork?

We have been servicing our Munster based clients from Dublin since 2004 and it had always been our intention to open a local office once some stability came into the market. Cork is long recognised as a pharma and technology cluster. It made sense for us to be located here to service this growing market along with the existing client base we have within the logistics, freight, transport and shipping industries that service these manufacturers.

Is there a specific niche in the recruitment market that you specialise in?

We are recognised as sectoral specialists for companies engaged in the manufacture or movement of product.

Typical departments that we service include Distribution, Engineering, Finance, Freight Forwarding, Inventory & Materials Management, Logistics & Supply Chain Management, Sales & Marketing, Manufacturing, Shipping and Warehousing & Transport.

As a total service provider, we offer temporary, contract and permanent solutions to our clients.

Do you feel a sense of optimism about the future of the economy, given the challenges of recent years?

Anyone who has survived the recession has to be optimistic when they contrast where we are today in comparison to depths of the recession.

Unemployment at 9.3% is dropping steadily quarter to quarter and we’ve come a long way since a recent peak of 15.1% in 2012. Inward investment and indigenous job creation is on the rise along with an increased demand for talent from the multi-nationals as the recent Apple announcement highlighted. Personal taxation rates are falling, interest rates remain at record lows and consumer confidence is returning to the high street.

All these factors provide buoyancy to the job market which is a direct indicator of a healthy growing economy. As consumer confidence rises so does demand for goods and services. Hence job creation advances along with diminishing job insecurities to the point where those in employment are seeking to advance their careers.

CORK AT A GLANCE

To mark the bicentenary of the birth of mathematical genius, George Boole, the CEIA - Cork’s Technology Network, today (Wednesday) launched an interactive Boolean logic game for students. Funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and in partnership with the Boole2School programme at UCC, the role-playing card game represents the true and false values of Booleans in every day uses, and is designed to be used by schoolchildren as an engaging and fun way to understand logic. Speaking at the launch, Valerie Cowman, Skills and Education Chair of the CEIA said: “While Boolean logic may sound like a very complex topic, it is actually the simplest of logics and the very basics of computing. Through our Boolean logic game cards, representing the true and false values of Booleans in every day uses, students – as young as 6th class – can understand and have fun with logic.” The application logic in the real world is not obvious to students, even though it is the fundamental basis of every computer, laptop, tablet and smartphone. Popular children’s computer games, such as Candy Crush and Minecraft, are clear examples of Boolean logic at work. The CEIA Bo01ean logic game demonstrates, through a role playing card game, just how Boolean maths influences our lives and modern world. The CEIA Boolean Internet Roadshow is being rolled out to schools in the coming months, and will bring the Bo01ean logic game to schools all over Ireland. “The CEIA has been working with schools in the Cork Region for a number of years now to drive the STEM agenda. As the representative body for the high tech sector in the Region, comprising ICT, manufacturing, medtech and innovative design companies, it is a natural fit for our organisation to promote the importance of Boole’s work through the roadshow and game. We are delighted to mark the centenary in this unique way for schoolchildren.” The Bo01ean logic game was devised by Eamon Connolly, CEIA outreach officer and Brian English, Board member of the CEIA. Having been trialed with 6th class primary students earlier this year, the game was adopted by Science teachers at the Eureka Centre in UCC as a tool to teach the basic principles of logic to students. In September 2015, the Irish Secondary Teacher’s Association (ISTA) introduced the game into their classrooms nationally. Following the official launch, the Bo01ean logic game is being distributed free of charge to students, teachers, parents through the CEIA website at www.ceia.ie.

Cork startups were in the spotlight at the Startup Gathering 2020 Forum, held at County Hall recently. As part of the Startup Forum event, four shortlisted companies pitched to win the Cork BIC Venture Academy award. Sothic Bioscience was the winning startup, led by Stephen Geary, with their next generation cell based technologies targeting the pharma sector. “The startups selected to pitch for the Cork BIC Venture Academy award showed incredible innovation in their company solutions and strategies,” said Michael O’Connor, Cork BIC. “Seeing the diversity of solutions, as well as variety of backgrounds of these entrepreneurs shows the promising pipeline of startups in the Cork region, and the strength of the ecosystem here in supporting these innovators.” Among those shortlisted for the Academy, and pitching for investment, were DiaNia

Technologies, which commercialises innovative extrusion technologies for advanced catheters. Another finalist, GlowDX, has developed the world’s first accessible diagnostics platform using novel molecular science to provide developing countries with high quality diagnostic tests. Safe Care Technologies provide assistive technology solutions for the disabled, elderly or impaired who want to live a more independent life in their home, through customisable control and monitoring of a user’s living environment. The winning company, led by Stephen Geary, is Sothic Bioscience for their next-generation cell based technologies, which aims to replace the use of unsustainable animal-derived reagents with scalable production of high-quality biomolecules. The Sothio product targets quality control and sterility testing in the regulated pharmaceutical and medical device sectors. “The pyrogen testing market is valued at in excess of USD $485 million and is projected to grow to more than USD $850 million by 2019,” explained Stephen Geary, CEO Sothio Science. “Our solution has the potential to be a game changer in the industry, and we are delighted to have been chosen as the Cork BIC Venture Academy winner. The judging process was rigorous and intense, with many serial entrepreneurs and seasoned investors on the panel, so this award really validates our solution and go to market strategy.” Speaking at the conclusion of the Startup Gathering event in Cork, regional co-ordinator and Cork innovates project director, Siobhan Finn added that “the spotlight shone brightly on Cork entrepreneurs, startups and businesses in the region during the Startup Gathering. The event showcased the diversity, opportunity and special ecosystem that Cork has developed to enable startups to thrive here.”

MethodStep 1Place the flour on a plate and season with salt and pepper. Heat half the oil in a large non-stick frypan over high heat. Lightly coat 4 of the veal pieces in the flour.

Step 2Add the veal to the pan and cook for 30 to 40 seconds on each side, or until just cooked. Transfer to a plate and repeat this process with the remaining veal and seasoned flour.

Step 3Add the marsala to the pan and scrape off any bits of veal that may have stuck to the bottom of the pan. Simmer for 3 to 4 minutes, or until reduced by about half. Stir in the cream. Taste and season with salt and pepper. Return veal to the pan. Turn to coat in sauce and heat through.

Step 4Place two pieces of veal on each serving plate and drizzle with sauce. Serve with steamed green beans and mashed potato.

The New Workplace Relations Act 2015: HOW DOES IT AFFECT YOUR BUSINESS?

The bulk of the new act came into effect on 1 October 2015. It’s a game changer for every employer and worker in Ireland and should make it less complicated for employees to bring claims and for employers to respond to them. It is designed to provide swifter access to justice and quicker resolutions of disputes for everyone. The main objectives of the Act are twofold to:

To reform Irelands workplace relations bodies

To simplify and streamline the workplace disputes procedures and bodies

HOW DOES IT WORK

Dispute ResolutionIn harmonising and de-cluttering the current system, the Act provides a single gateway for employment disputes in Ireland and replaces the current maze of tribunals and courts. From now on all employment disputes - everything from unfair dismissals and discrimination claims to working time issues, pay claims and any industrial relations issues - will be referred to the newly established Workplace Relations Commission (“WRC”) in the first instance. There is now one appeal body and that is the Labour Court.

Time Limits to bring ClaimsLimitation periods for the referral of a dispute under any employment or equality legislation will be standardised to six months. This can be extended to twelve months where “reasonable cause” can be shown.

Early ResolutionThe Act encourages mediation and the early resolution of disputes as close to the workplace as possible and without the need for parties to have to resort to formal adjudication where possible.

An Early Resolution process is currently being trialled. When a complaint arrives at the WRC it may be referred to a mediation officer if it is deemed suitable for early resolution. If so, and if both parties agree to it, then a mediation conference (potentially held over the phone) will be convened. Any resolution arising from this will be binding on the parties and enforceable in the Courts.

Adjudication of DisputesIf early resolution is not deemed appropriate, is refused by the parties, or if an attempted mediation is unsuccessful, a dispute will be referred to a single adjudicator at the WRC. This process is envisaged as being more inquisitorial than adversarial - the hearing will be held in private and evidence will not be on oath. Representation (legal or otherwise) will be allowed, but there are no references in the Act to the examination or cross-examination of witnesses. All decisions of adjudicators will be published on the internet on an anonymised basis.

AppealsFrom now on, any appeal from a decision of an Adjudicator will simply go to the Labour Court in all instances. The Labour Court hearings will be public and decisions will be published in full, unless special circumstances arise.Compliance Provisions

The Sting in The TailThe Act goes far beyond simply reforming processes and procedures. In order to promote higher levels of compliance with employment and equality law,

employers can now be penalised with “on the spot fines” (with the possibility of imprisonment) for breaches of employment law.

A WRC inspector can issue compliance notices for breaches of certain Acts. Failure to comply with a Compliance Notice will be an offence and on indictment may result in a fine of up to €50,000 or imprisonment for up to 3 years for the employer concerned. Where a WRC inspector has reasonable grounds for believing that an employer has committed an offence under the Protection of Employment Act; Payment of Wages Act; or National Minimum Wage Act, they may issue the employer with a fine or “Fixed Payment Notice” which may not exceed €2,000.

MOTORING NEWS

While the crossover market is quite a crowded space, the Lexus NX300h has found a niche within it and is seen as a very welcome addition to the Lexus model range. The Japanese

premium brand, which has adopted a fundamentalist approach to hybrid powertrains has always been something of a niche player on the market but that’s become increasingly the case as its German rivals slice and dice the premium market with a cavalcade of derivatives and engine options. So what of the NX? Well it’s clear that Lexus was eager to make it stand out from the crowd. With the enormous front grille on the higher-end F-Sport variant the car is certainly not going to disappear into the rest of the crossover traffic. Even with the more traditional split grille front nose - which will be the norm on virtually all Irish models sold - the multiple creases and sharp lines adorning nearly every body panel should ensure you can pick the NX out in contrast to the more traditional - and perhaps mundane - rivals. In keeping with the hybrid-only mantra, the NX is powered by a mix of a 2.5-litre four cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor and battery pack. Total output is 197bhp and from my test it is clear that it can manage an impressive 5 L/100km or 56.5mpg in old conversions, with emissions of just 116g/km. That’s lower than most of the similarly powered diesel rivals. In performance terms it manages to get to 100km/h from a standing start in 9.3 seconds.

As with most other Lexus models the NX is an easy drive and a relaxing drive. Inside and in contrast to many open and airy crossover cabins the front occupants are cosseted in a busy high set front cabin. The high central console is awash with prominent buttons and controls, similar in format to the current IS model. If you opt for the Lexus premium navigation pack, you also get the firm’s latest touch control pad. This lets

you move the cursor between buttons on the display screen mounted on the dash. There’s a vibration as you flit between on-screen tabs, which makes it easier to use while driving as you quickly become used to which button is which and don’t have to look away from the road. Rear seat legroom isgood with adult passengers, while the boot is deep - with a nice deep storage well under the regular floor. While six versions of the NX will be offered for the Irish market starting with the so-called Eco specification at €43,950, the vast majority of Irish sales will be Dynamic or Executive versions, priced at €48,950 and €50,950 respectively. Most will also be front-wheel-drive, with only the Executive offered with a choice of front or all-wheel-drive (AWD) for an additional €2,000 on the price. The F-Sport and Premium versions will have AWD as standard. The AWD system works off an additional electric motor powering the rear axle, but it only really kicks in when is senses a loss of grip. So who will buy? Expectations are that it will largely be younger buyers, with 80 per cent of owners coming to Lexus for the first time. Rivals range from the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Volvo XC60 through to the much-loved Range Rover Evoque. However it’s likely that initial buyers may also be found in owners of older RX models seeking to downsize. Lexus is predicting sales of over 200 NX models this year which we suspect could be higher. The NX should prove a popular hit, particularly for those looking for an alternative to the Audi and BMW offerings, both of which could be considered rather bland in styling. It’s competitively priced and boasts the renowned Lexus build quality that has held the brand in high esteem for a long time. It’s certainly a welcome additional model for a brand that has a lot more to come.

Ireland’s first ever National Digital Week took place in Skibbereen in the heart of West Cork, with over 2,000 entrepreneurs, digital marketers, technology enthusiasts and those embarking on a digital journey, attending. National Digital Week aimed to develop entrepreneurship by making digital accessible for all, and is the first of its kind in a non-urban area in Ireland. It caters for everyone and anyone with an interest in the future of digital technology. The 4 day event, which was organised by the recently established Ludgate@Skibbereen, Ireland’s first rural digital hub, focused on the future of digital technology and was attended by Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Alex White. It featured more than 60 high profile international and national speakers on two stages, including Ronan Harris, Head of Google EMEA, and Dr. Laurence O’Rourke, Rosetta Mission Science Operations Coordinator at the European Space Agency, who discussed the applications of STEM in a practical way and the success of the Rosetta mission and the future of space exploration. Ingrid Vanderveldt of the US based Empower A Billion Women 2020 organisation, who was a former entrepreneur in residence at DELL and CNBC television host, also spoke at the event, and she and her team conducted workshops with attendees and showcase toolkits for entrepreneurs from their EBW2020 programme. The formal partnership formed between National Digital Week & EBW 2020 is an injection of confidence in rural Ireland. Commenting Ingrid said, “I am very excited to play a part in the partnership between EBW 2020 and National Digital Week, which provides the tools, technology and resources needed to succeed in business in a digital age. Google, Discovery Networks, Enterprise Ireland, the ESA, Musgrave Group, PayPal, Vodafone, and Microsoft are just some of the other companies that presented at National Digital Week, and there was also a video conference from Ireland’s Digital Ambassador Lord David Puttnam.
