Welcome The School of Business and Law (SBL) at Edith Cowan University is very pleased to welcome you

to the 2nd Business Doctoral and Emerging Scholars Conference.

This conference provides an opportunity for doctoral students and early career researchers (ECRs)

to discuss and share their ideas and approaches with peers and leading academics within the broad

field of business. Participants this year have come from a range of disciplines encompassing:

accounting, financial markets, corporate finance, supply chain management, organisational

behaviour, management, human resource management, marketing and innovation, to name a few.

We are also honoured to have three distinguished keynote speakers: Professor Duncan Lewis who

has travelled to Perth for this conference, to join Associate Professor Julia Richardson from Curtin

University and our very own Professor Stephen Teo at Edith Cowan University. They will provide

some insights into charting and building an academic career.

We are also pleased to have Dr Abhay Kumar Singh from Macquarie University, Dr Saiyidi Mat Roni

and Dr Diep Nguyen from Edith Cowan University, who will be running workshops on statistical

analysis using SPSS and R software, along with a session on method bias in behavioural research.

We are committed to offer strong platforms for our future researchers to excel in their fields.

Research at SBL has gone from strength to strength. In 2017, we had a number of new academics

joining us, fuelling a wave of collaborative activities to support researchers and students, and a

number of new students commencing their degrees. The conference will wrap up an eventful year in

our constant pursuit to extend the boundaries of knowledge.

We hope you enjoy your time with us at the conference.

Associate Professor Hadrian Djajadikerta Associate Dean of Research

Professor Duncan Lewis What it means to be a researcher

Duncan Lewis is a management professor at Plymouth Business School and completed his PhD at Cardiff University. His research interests include emotional labour, destructive leadership, discrimination, bullying and workplace conflicts. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (FCIPD) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). He has recently completed two large Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded research projects that amounted to a total of more than

£1.3 million. He has also recently completed two independent research contracts for Royal Mall and Barts Health NHS Trust on workplace bullying and discrimination. Duncan has co-authored several book chapters and has published in several high quality journals including International Small Business Journal and Sociology. He completed a co-authored book Trouble at work that features the largest specialist research programme to date on ill-treatment in the workplace.

Professor Stephen Teo Strategies to build an academic career

Stephen Teo is a Professor of Work and Performance and Professorial Research Fellow at Edith Cowan University. He also heads the Centre for Work and Organisational Performance (CWOP). Prior to this appointment, he was the Interim Director of the Global Business Innovation Research Platform at RMIT University. He is recognised as one of the leading scholars in the field of human resource management, as shown by the outcome of the 2012 New Zealand Performance-based Research Funding evaluation. He has published

in leading refereed journals such as Human Resource Management (USA), Human Resource Management Journal, Journal of Vocational Behaviour, The International Journal of Human Resource Management, International Business Review, Asia Pacific Journal of Management, and others such as the Journal of Advanced Nursing. His most recent projects examined the impact of organizational change on the well-being and performance of public sector employees in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the USA and Italy. He is currently undertaking research into workplace ill-treatment and psychological capital.

Associate Professor Julia Richardson Publish successfully in quality peer-reviewed journals

Julia Richardson recently joined Curtin University after moving to Australia from Canada. She has pursued an international career in both academia and the corporate sector in Canada, Singapore, Japan and the UK. Her research expertise focuses on contemporary careers and the implications for Human Resource Management practices and organisational performance. Much of her work involves international collaboration with scholars in other universities, including colleagues in the USA, Canada and the UK. She is also a strong proponent of collaborating with junior scholars and doctoral researchers. Julia has published

her work in several high quality journals including British Journal of Management, Human Relations, Management International Review, International Journal of Management Reviews, Journal of World Business, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Personnel Review, Career Development International, amongst others. Workshop facilitators

3

Dr Abhay Kumar Singh R

2—R for Researchers

The most daunting part for those coming from a non-programming background is to write few lines of code. The main objective of this workshop is to introduce R and R Studio, and their various capabilities to help participants in getting started with coding in R. This four hour workshop specifically targets PhD students and researchers who are either beginners in R or want to get started. The workshop will cover topics ranging from: introduction to the R environment, programming basics, data exploration, and data visualisation to statistical

techniques like regression analysis.

Dr Saiyidi Mat Roni Regression for Business

This workshop is designed for early- and mid-career researchers to explore the foundations and interpretations of statistical outputs of one of the most widely used methods in business analytics – regression. Participants will be introduced to four different regressions; these are basic regression, multiple regression, hierarchical regression, and binary logistic regression using SPSS. The participants will have a hands-on practice with simulated datasets in a computer lab. An emphasis on assumptions behind regression analyses will also be

demonstrated to equip the participants with insights that help their interpretation of regression outputs and models. Participants are expected to have basic technical know-how to enter data into SPSS, and toggling between data and variable views.

Dr Diep Nguyen and Professor Stephen Teo Common method bias in behavioural research: pitfalls and solutions

This 90 minute workshop will look at the causes of common method bias in undertaking survey research in Social Science disciplines. Common method bias (CMB) or common-method variance (CMV) is the spurious variance that is attributable to the measurement method rather than to the constructs the measures are assumed to represent and CMV is the systematic error variance shared among variables measured with and introduced as a function of the same method and/or source. We will provide advice and tips on how to test

and address common method bias in empirical studies by using examples analysed in SPSS and AMOS/Mplus statistical softwares from our published research.
