Activities of Major Players

Companies are expanding their

businesses

Most of the established brands in Indian education

sector are looking for new avenues to expand their

businesses.

After raising INR122 crore through Initial Public

Offer last month, Tree House Education &

Accessories Limited is using these funds for

expansion. The company is expanding into pre-

school business. It has signed up 6 new centers in

Mumbai and 1 in Nagpur in the month of August

2011, taking its total number of preschools to 230.

Tree House is also investing in acquiring office space,

constructing infrastructure for educational

complexes in Rajasthan and Gujarat, and procuring

exclusivity rights to provide educational services.

Shiv Nadar Foundation, which already has presence

in higher education, is also expanding by entering

the elementary education space and opening its

schools across the country. First two Shiv Nadar

Schools will be started in Noida and Gurgaon, and

the number will gradually increase to 25 schools

across the country by 2020. The foundation is

already operating the SSN College of Engineering,

the SSN School of Management and Computer

Applications and the SSN School of Advanced

Software Engineering, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The trend is also visible in case of products and

services providers to educational institutions. IT

products manufacturer BenQ is banking on ICT in

education, and is targeting the education sector to

increase the sale of its projectors in the country.

According to the company, the education sector is

the biggest driver for their projector business,

contributing to the majority of sales. The company

expects the size of projector market of 300,000 units

in 2011, which will grow to 500,000 units in 2012.

Sector is witnessing acquisitions by

major players

Besides organic expansion, many players in the

sector are also exploring ways of expanding the

inorganic way through mergers and acquisitions.

BSE-listed DMC Education Limited is acquiring other

companies in the education sector. After acquiring

Kolkata-based education consulting firm Plansteps in

May 2011, the company has now acquired 51 %

stake in Delhi-based training institute Lifelong

Finishing Academy for approximately INR1 crore.

DMC currently provides training for entrance

examinations, and is expected to benefit from

Lifelong Finishing Academy’s business of training

courses on personal grooming, cooking, holistic

living, etiquette, and home & financial management.

The new injection of capital will help Lifelong in

taking its personal grooming courses pan India and

open up approximately 100 new centers in the next

two-three years.

Navneet Publications India Limited is investing

INR45 crore in Hyderabad-based school

management company K-12 Techno Services. K-12

Techno, which already has funding from Sequoia

Capital, offers school management services such as

administration, teacher recruitment and training,

and curriculum and infrastructure development

across the state of Andhra Pradesh. The latest

funding is expected to help K-12 Techno expand its

services across five different states and manage over

200 schools over the period of 3-4 years. The deal

will also help Navneet expand its publishing business

from Maharashtra and Gujarat to other states.

Companies are not only acquiring, but are also

getting acquired for funding purposes. 2011 has

witnessed many technology based educational

startups, where venture capital firms bought stake

by funding them. After Sparsha Learning

Technologies, InOpen Technologies, and Applect

Learning Systems, it’s now turn for Bangalore based

online education start-up Eduora Technologies

Private Limited.

Eduora Technologies Private Limited has got funding

from venture capital firm, Seeders Venture Capital.

Eduora, which was started in March 2011, is building

an online, cloud-based platform. The platform will

combine the Learning Management System with the

social elements of cloud computing and the internet.

The company is currently in private alpha stage, and

is expected to launch its network in late 2011.

International education providers are

forming alliances with their Indian

counterparts

In order to enter the booming Indian education

market, many foreign players are joining hands with

Indian companies. This is proving to be a win—win

situation for both the parties. On one hand, foreign

companies are getting Indian partners, who have

knowledge about the market, while on the other,

Indian organizations are learning the new techniques

from their foreign counterparts.

Serra International Pre-school has entered into

joint venture with Singapore based EtonHouse

International Education Group to launch a chain of

international pre-schools across India. Serra is

planning to invest INR100 crore for setting up 100

franchised international pre-schools by 2012 and

1000 franchised international pre-schools over the

period of seven years.

The company will be focusing on Chennai,

Bangalore, Hyderabad, Secunderabad in the South

India, Delhi/NCR and Punjab in the North India, and

Mumbai, Pune and Gujarat in the western part of

the country. EtonHouse is already operating 52

schools and pre-schools across Singapore, China,

Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, Vietnam, Japan and

India.

Another Singapore-based organization Global

Indian International School (GIIS) has tied up with

Godrej Properties Limited for setting up an

education facility in Godrej’s upcoming township in

Ahmadabad. As per the Tie-up, Godrej will construct

the school premises for GIIS. GIIS has a network of

21 schools across countries such as Japan, Malaysia,

New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, the UAE, the US

and Vietnam.

World’s leading K-12 education provider, GEMS

Education, has entered into a partnership with the

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural

Organization (UNESCO) to undertake world’s largest

leadership training program. Under the program,

GEMS would impart training to approximately

10,000 school principals globally, over a period of

four years. Approximately 3500 school principals will

be trained for leadership in India alone, which falls

under the first phase of the program.

Singapore Management University (SMU) has also

signed a Memorandum of Understanding with

Infosys Limited. Under the three-year agreement,

SMUs School of Information Systems and Infosys

Education & Research would work together, and

develop case studies and learning labs for SMUs

Bachelor of Science (IS Management) and Master of

IT in Business degree programs, and training

program content for Infosys employees. The MoU

will also help SMU and Infosys to facilitate faculty

and professional staff visits to each-other’s locations,

and collaborate in research projects of mutual

interest.

Sector is witnessing new products and

services

In order to add value to their offerings, schools are

introducing new and innovative ways to teaching.

One such step is taken by e-learning service provider

Next Education India Private Limited. The company

has launched its Next Learning Centers (NLC), an

after-school learning center in Hyderabad. An

updated version of coaching centers, NLCs will

create a personalized classroom environment, and

will act as a finishing school for personality

development of students. Next is currently operating

two NLCs in Hyderabad and one in Kochi, and is

planning to launch 100 owned centers and 500

centers on the franchisee model across 20 cities in

future.

A new type of school has been setup in Kolkata by

Save the Children and Aviva Insurance, which is a

mobile learning center. Named Aviva Mobile

Learning Centre, the schools are in form of two

busses, which have trained teachers, counselors and

vocational instructors on board. These buses will

reach out to underprivileged children in places such

as railway stations or streets/slums and impart them

knowledge. The aim of this school is to bring 3,000

out-of-school children and 1,000 underprivileged

children into formal education within two years.

The Indira Gandhi National Open University

(IGNOU's) is coming up with a new Certificate

Program in Value Education for teachers through its

School of Extension and Development Studies. The

distance-learning program, which will start from

January 2012, will have duration of six months.

IGNOU has designed this program primarily for

teachers teaching in elementary classes, to integrate

values in their transactional process of teaching and

learning.

Opportunities in the sector

Foreign education players are planning

to enter India

Many foreign educational institutions are looking

for collaboration with Indian institutes. Over 60 skills

and education providers from the UK, lead by the UK

India Business Council (UKIBC), were in India in

September, to scout for potential opportunities. The

organizations, such as A4e, Edexcel, City of

Westminster College, Tribal Education Limited, City

& Guilds and Hull College, have entered into a

partnership with the British Deputy High

Commission and Federation of Indian Chambers of

Commerce and Industry (FICCI) to strengthen Indo-

UK cooperation in the field of skills and education.

UKIBC is also planning to have tie-ups with

companies such as Hero MotoCorp Limited and

Mahindra and Mahindra Limited for skill

development programs.

US companies are also looking at investing in the

Indian education sector. Chad Kreikemeier, an

adviser to US Senator Jeanne Shaheen has expressed

his optimism for various potential opportunities in

the education sector, which can prove beneficial for

both the countries. He has come to India with his

delegation, which comprised of several educational

institutions, including representatives from the

Dartmouth College from New Hampshire.

Australia is planning to enhance its education and

research collaboration with India, in order to cope

up with its increasing demand for skilled workforce

in the areas such as faculty development and

curriculum renewal. In order to provide a boost to

the collaboration, governments of both the

countries have announced new exchange programs

targeting academics and college principals.

Further, a new website is coming up to promote

closer education and training collaboration.

In order to leverage the increasing collaboration

between the two countries, education providers in

India have started preparing new education models,

which meet the quality standards of training

imparted in Australia.

Indian universities are also exploring

partnership prospects

Sensing the new changes coming up in the sector,

government organizations are now working more

toward public-private partnerships. Providers of

higher education are going to witness new

opportunities, as the Tamil Nadu government is

finalizing its plan document for higher education for

the XII Plan period from 2012-17.

The plan document is expected to have new policy

initiatives for higher education, growth targets,

implementation and monitoring mechanism. It will

also discuss areas such as equity in access to higher

education, additional intake capacity, skill based

courses, and Public Private Partnerships. The

document will further have notes on minimum

educational qualification for teaching staff,

technology infusion in higher education, resource

generation, and infrastructure development in

universities.

Other Prominent Trends in the Sector

Changes in regulations expected to

impact education service providers

As the industry is expected to witness many new

regulations, the educational institutions and their

associations are debating on the potential impact of

these regulations on them.

The Association of Indian Universities (AIU)

believes that the proposed Foreign Educational

Institutions (Regulation of Entry and Operations) Bill-

2010 will pose a major threat to the domestic

universities. According to the AIU, before inviting

foreign players in the country, India must improve

the quality of its institutions so that they can

compete with their foreign counterparts. Indian

universities are facing the problems such as lack of

funds, obsolete curriculum, and shortage of quality

teachers. As they are not ready to compete with the

foreign varsities, AIU believes that the foreign

entrants will poach quality teachers from them.

Other educational institutes, which might face axe,

this time from the department of higher education,

are the Franchisee run coaching institutes. The

department is planning to make it compulsory for

coaching institutes to take license from the

department before operating. Further, they might

also have to fix their tuition fee and intimate it to the

department.

Legal education might witness an

overhaul

Legal education system of the country might also

see some changes in order to adapt itself with the

changing social needs, as well as globalization. As the

900 odd law schools in India do not have adequate

faculty to impart legal education, the Bar Council of

India (BCI), along with the State Bar Councils might

work on faculty improvement. BCI is planning to find

50 PhD scholars in law, who will be groomed as

teachers over a period of six months. These scholars

will then be send to law schools, in order to groom

250 law teachers over a period of five years.

Banks are introducing new norms for

home loans

According to a revised scheme by the Indian Banks'

Association, banks might introduce a system of

assessing the potential employability of students

before giving them loans. Under the new scheme,

before sanctioning a loan, banks will now look at

various factors such as the earning potential of

various courses, placements at colleges and loan

repayment capacity of students post placements.

The new scheme will also extend the repayment

period to 10 years for loans up to INR7.5 lakh and 15

years for loans above INR7.5 lakh. Further, for loans

to students going abroad, banks will be able to

charge processing fee. However, this fee will have to

be refunded upon the student taking up the course.

Australia making education visa process

easier

Australia has opened avenues for students going

for higher studies by announcing new student visa

regulations. The regulations will help students, who

obtain their first subclass 573 (higher education

sector) or 574 (postgraduate research sector) visa

following the proposed Genuine Temporary Entrant

(GTE) requirement, greater opportunity to work in

Australia.

According to the new regulations, students

graduating from a bachelor or masters by

coursework degree, will be able to stay in Australia

and work for two years after the completion of their

course. The time period will be three years for

graduates of masters' by research degree, and four

years for PhD graduates.
