Course Goal

Enable you to effectively manage critical information technology resources by providing youwith an experiential understanding of the fundamental infrastructure components of InformationTechnology that include; computing hardware, networking, operating systems, application software,applications development.

The objective of this course is to provide students with a better understanding of the influenceof twenty-first-century technologies on business decisions. It is our hope that the students will come tounderstand that IT and IS are important no matter what they career choice.

Course O bjective

The course deals with the use of information systems within a business enterprise. It will address

both the fundamentals of information technology and where, why and how those that run a companyfind it important to support business strategies and core processes with computer-based systems.Students should gain an understanding and appreciation for the use of information systems to obtainorganizational efficiencies, increase individual effectiveness and/or gain a competitive advantage. Intoday's global economy the appropriate role and use of information technology should receivecareful consideration within an enterprise. Information systems are being used to shape products andservices, companies, industries and even countries. Technological change, including information systems,can be one of the more prominent things in transforming the rules of competition, determining how anorganization operates and whether it is successful.

In completing this course a student should have an understanding of the role of informationsystems within a business enterprise. Basic information technology (IT) concepts will be covered as willthe business and management issues associated with the use of IT. The course will also solidify thestudent's use of desktop software tools like MS Office to do word processing or to createspreadsheets, charts and graphs and the use of the Access database software.

The course structure has three major segments that are viewed as integral parts of a logicaland cohesive systems approach to manage information and information technology within a business:

1. Fundamentals of business operations and how information systems support these operations.2. Information technology components: hardware, software, database and telecommunication

networks.3. Managing information systems within a business.

y The current business environment and its challenges.y Factors that drive the focus and priorities of a business and determine its success.y Examples of successful organizations that put a major emphasis on the use of Information

Systems.y

The use of Information Systems in the Enterprise.y The Digital Firm : E-Business and E-Commercey Data as an organizational resource.y Telecommunication networks as an information delivery vehicle.y The Internet, intranets and extranets as network approaches.y The value of Information Systems.y Managing and controlling information systems.

CO URSE PREREQU ISITES

There are no specific prerequisites to this course but the subjects such as, O ffice Automation orIntroduction to Com puter is strongly recommended.
