shortened the travelling time from Helsinki
to Lahti to less than 50 minutes by train.
The Lahti region is Finland's fifth largest urban
region. With its versatile range of services the City
of Lahti forms the centre of an economic region with

Innovations& Design
Welcome to Lahti, City of Innovations and Design
The city of Lahti, with population of almost 100 000, is the
seventh largest in Finland. Thanks to excellent connections
this city, in the centre of Southern Finland, is easy to reach.
Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport is within one hour’s
drive.
Lahti is one of Finland's leading design cities. Designers
educated in Lahti have gained international recognition
especially for their jewellery and industrial design. Other
areas of expertise include metal, woodworking and furniture
industries. In addition, a lot of Finnish environmental expertise
is concentrated in Lahti region focusing especially on soil
and water research, as well as waste treatment and recycling.
Lahti is internationally known for winter sports and it has
hosted the Nordic World Ski Championships six times. In
addition, Lahti Symphony Orchestra has achieved international
award and success for its accounts of Jean Sibelius master-
pieces.
The city of Lahti is a hundred years
old, but its history dates back far
beyond that. Lahti is home to the
oldest Finnish residential area known
today - the Ristola area in the suburb
of Renkomäki was already populated
over 9,000 years ago! Furthermore,
the village of Lahti is mentioned in
official documents for the first time
in 1445, as a village in Hollola parish.
4
Lahti region
The Lahti region has a long tradition in trade and entrepreneurship. Good traffic
connections gave rise to a boom in business. The most significant branches
were the joinery and textile industries, which centred on craftsmanship. Based
on these traditions, the city of Lahti - known as the city of carpenters - is still
the most significant centre of woodworking and furniture design and manufacture
in Finland.

Strong industries in the Lahti region include
the plastics and mechatronics industries,
as well as the food and beverage industries,
which are largely based on grain cultivation.
Together with the woodworking and furniture
industries they account for a significant
proportion of the GNP in the province. The
environmental business sector is a rapidly
growing speciality sector in the region.

Logistic Centre
Lahti’s favourable logistic
location has attracted many
logistic operators and other
businesses to the region.
Lahti is also a gateway to
Russia by railway. Increasing traffic on the Trans-Siberian
Railway and the new Helsinki harbour have created new
possibilities for concentrating the distribution centre oper-
ations in Southern Finland to Lahti.
Concentration of
Grain Expertise
The Lahti region has the largest and most
versatile concentration of grain expertise in
the country. Grain processing is simultaneously
both a traditional and a modern industrial
branch, which invests heavily in research and

buildings. Modern wooden-built apartment
buildings have been constructed to
complement residential areas with older
traditional-style wooden houses. A completely
new wooden-built residential suburb, which
is set to become the largest in Scandinavia,
is currently under construction in Lahti. With
its lake and forest setting and its low rise
and compact building style, the new Karisto

From the moment ice forms on Lake Vesijärvi,
the lake transforms into an active winter sports
arena. Weather permitting, a ski track and
skating route are maintained on the ice, leading
from Lahti harbour to the ski resort of Messilä.
On a sunny late winter’s day you might even
meet snowmobiles, hang gliders and dogsleds
out on the ice. And if you need a break from all
that fresh winter’s air, you can stop for a snack
in one of the coffee houses which line the
