Overview• The SDTG was established to foster research and
information exchange on the integration of HF/E into the development of systems and products
• Members are concerned with defining HF/E activities and integrating them into the system/product development process in order to provide systems that meet user requirements– Examples include:
• Computer systems, aerospace system, consumer products, commercial power systems, environmental systems, organizational systems, perceptual systems, robotic systems, other vehicle systems (UAVs, etc)

Council of Technical Groups (COTG) Review
• Meeting held on Monday to update the COTG about the status of the various TGs (issues?)
• Membership updates - range ~120 to over 660• Newsletter updates - range 2-3, mostly electronic, future
consideration to solely be electronic• Tech sessions - 1 session to 15 sessions• TG Awards - surplus balance• Suggestions raised questions on some of the antiquated
bylaws• Websites -
– originality of the TG is important– likely to be centrally held
COTG Review (cont’d)• HFES website has been redone, has lead to increased TG
traffic (links), email and listservers will be placed on central server over the next year and plans exist to coordinate TG websites
• COTG discussed making a concerted effort to have coordination among TGs where possible
• COTG is running a significant surplus– Mini-conferences with similarly directed TGs?– Mini-keynote speaker co-sponsored by 2 TGs?– Doctoral dissertation award?
• Rejuvenate the best practices of the TGs• SDTG needs to continue to maintain
increased visibility (newsletters, etc)• Overall, SDTG performance is getting
back on track

2005 TPC Review• Minimum acceptability threshold was 3.0/5.0 • Abstracts were reviewed by three or more reviewers • 17 qualified reviewers participated in the peer review• 23 abstract submitted• 16 papers were accepted for presentation• Submissions received an average rating of 3.96 for
lectures, 3.65 for posters, and 4.00 for Panel/Symposium• One symposium, two panels, and a lecture session were

proposals were accepted• One lecture paper was transferred to another TG and was
accepted
Direction - 2004-2005• Continue providing member value through
information dissemination• Outlined ten new initiatives at HFES 2004• Have completed 60% of the 2004
initiatives(6/10) and have continued to work on the ten 2002/2003 initiatives (6/10 completed)
• We request that you consult the SDTG web site and make comments on these initiatives (add new ones, provide input to complete existing initiatives)
Newsletter Update • Paper Newsletters
– 2001 - Cost outlined as being an issue– 2002, 2003 - Time required to produce newsletter is high and
reducing the production time is desired• Electronic only?
– 2004 - Two primarily electronic newsletters produced• Multifaceted challenges in Newsletter Production:
– Time to create, information content for newsletter
• Newsletter link and paper editions – Are we getting everyone? How do we verify that we are getting at
everyone (web counter, other suggestions)?
• Moving Forward (2005 and beyond): – Options to improve disseminating information:
• Electronic - miss some of the membership (18 requested paper)• Mixed electronic-paper: the current approach (successful thus far!)• A SDTG Blog?
Current Areas of Concern• Membership decline seems to be reversing• Newsletter information/content
– Difficulty obtaining information to include in the newsletter
– Vast, diffuse focus area for the SDTG– Desire to offer useful information for the cross
disciplinary SDTG membership– Need to obtain more information from members for
general dissemination to the membership
• Officer nominations– Need more participation from members to guide
the direction of the TG
Website update (www.sdtg.hfes.org)
• Need input on current design– Any design issues/problems with the site?
• Does anyone want to take a stab at working with Teresa to make the changes
– Is the format acceptable? Are the links clearly marked? Is the information that you are seeking on the page?
– Possible members’ discussion area (blog-like)• How to design this, ideas on keeping blog discussion going?
• Challenges:– Keeping all information (especially contact information)
current– Any changes must be made through the HFES, the Chair, or
the Secretary/Treasurer
Listserve update• Centrally held at HFES
• Listserve has been an effective tool for communication between members
• Problems?– Sending– Receiving
• Still no solution for the use of auto-reply
• Suggestions for improving usefulness?
By-Laws
• Most recent version (2002) of the By-Laws is on the web
• Need member comments on the By-Laws
• Log into the SDTG site and hit By-Laws review link
• Provide comments
How to get involved…• Renew TG dues• Add to and assist us in completing the annual
initiatives (volunteers are always welcome)• Submit articles to the SDTG Newsletter Editor• Volunteer, volunteer, volunteer!
– To assist current officers– To serve as a reviewer for the SDTG Technical
Program through one of the current officers– New ideas for fostering/enabling participation from
the membership• E.g. what are we missing, what do you look for from the
SDTG, how can we better target this?

2004/2005• Continue to add value for membership to
improve the membership numbers– Consider sponsoring outstanding student paper (from
developing country??), others?– New methods for augmenting knowledge and
importance of system related material– Add to the initiatives list to enable continued growth in
2006 and beyond
• Mini-conference? Partnerships (e.g. internal to HFES -- HPTG, external to HFES -- SAE)?
