Presenter
Presentation Notes
The mission of the U.S. Forest Service is to sustain the health, resilience, and productivity of the nation’s forests and grasslands for the benefit of present and future generations. Our mission extends to both public and private forests nationwide, and we are deeply concerned because we see a number of serious challenges to sustainability, particularly in connection with climate change.

We can decrease the effect of drought, pests, and wildfires

Presenter
Presentation Notes
These indirect impacts also interact with the effects of our previous management; for example, many fire-adapted forests in the United States have grown denser than they were historically, making them more susceptible to drought and insect attack. Overgrown forests and insect-killed trees, coupled with drought, are creating huge fire hazards. Wildfire activity in the West has quadrupled since the 1970s. In 2004 and 2005, more than 8 million acres burned each year; in 2006 and 2007, it was more than 9 million. Given climate change and the current fuels situation, the number of acres burned annually could go as high as 12 to 15 million acres in the coming years. Highly severe fires will put lives at risk, causing billions of dollars in damage and leaving soils and ecosystems devastated, potentially for decades to come.

Red-Cockaded Woodpecker and Nest Tree

Piedmont National Wildlife RefugePiedmont National Wildlife Refuge

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Photos courtesy of John Mason Development and maintenance of RCW habitat is the primary land management objective of the Piedmont NWR. These photos show the mature tree size desired by the red-cockaded woodpecker. Note the long streams of pine pitch around and below the nest cavity; this is a characteristic for all RCW nest trees. This deters predators (black rat snake and southern flying squirrels). RCWs select longleaf pine over loblolly (Piedmont NWR is dominated by loblolly). This means a more aggressive land management program due to more difficult regeneration, less fire resistance at an early age, and the short life (120 years is overmature; Piedmont manages on a 100 year “rotation” or life cycle) of the loblolly pine. Piedmont has an overabundance of mature trees and needs to begin a forest regeneration schedule to develop the future “old growth trees” (this age class will be sorely lacking in 40-60 years when today’s mature trees are dying). The challenge is in developing a harvest and prescribed burn schedule that can be implemented without damage to young trees, detracting from the forest structure needed by RCWs, meeting the patch size requirements of the Endangered Species Act (Critical Habitat?), keeping patch size large enough to meet the silvicultural requirements of loblolly pine for adequate sunlight, and trying to do so in a cost-effective manner. CAN THIS EVEN BE ACCOMPLISHED? Piedmont NWR is trying hard!
