Release of Lien of Estate Tax State commission Apparel Losses Cause Decline in Factory Job Index Seasonal losses in most branches of the apparel and tex- tile industries resulted in a small net drop in factory employment in the state between June and July in spite of continued gains in metals, machinery and building materials, and seasonal activity in the canning industry. Outstanding gains were in the food industries, acoording to the State Department of Labor. The canneries were employing many more workers in July than they did in June. The dairy industry also reported a substantial in- crease in employment with small- er gains recorded for grain-mill products, beverages and miscel- laneous food preparations. Candy factories, sugar refineries and meat packers employed fewer people in July. The metals and machinery in- dustries employed approximately 1 per cent miore workers in July than in June. The employment trend was upward in most indus- tries within the group. Increased employment was noted in the manufacture of heating appara- tus, lumber and timber basic prod- ucts, paints, varnishes and colors, structural clay products and con- crete, gypsum and plaster prod- ucts. F Anderson, 18 RKO Palace Hoagy CarmichaeTs next song hit may well be about a donkey. The songwriter - actor recently spent an afternoon perched upon the back of one of these rugged individual members of the animal kingdom, and feels that h e n o w knows as much about the breed as the chairman of a Democratic County Committee. Carmichael spent the afternoon on the donkey for a scene in Uni- versale Technicolor release, "Canyon Passage." Walter Wan- ger produced the new picture, which opened yesterday at the RKO Palace Theater. Dana An- drews, Brian Donlevy and Susan Hayward are co-starred. From his perch, Hoagy was called upon to ride several hun-^ dred yards down a beautiful set which is said to be an accurate replica of the city of Jacksonville, Ore., in 1856. En route he strummed a guitar end chanted a chorus of a number that may well reach the top of the Hit Parade. At the conclusion of the ride, Hoagy exchanged a few words with Miss Hayward and Andrews, mounted on horses, which had plot significance. The action lasts less than two minutes on the screen, yet it took the better part of four hours to photograph, with the tunesmith and the actors firm in their sad- dles for the entire time. Carmichael presents four of his own songs in "Canyon Passage." They are "Ole Buttermilk Sky," ^Rogjje River Valley," "I'm Get- tin' li/Tarried in the Mornln'" and "Silver Saddle." Jack Brooks collaborated with Hoagy in composing the lyrics and music for "Ole Buttermilk Sky." Patricia Roc, Ward Bond, Andy Devine and other screen notables are in the supporting cast of "Can- yon Passage." The film's screen- play was adapted from the Satur- day Evening Post story by Ernest Haycox.- Second feature on the RKO Pal- ace bill is "The Runaround," with Ella Raines and Rod Cameron. Regent Now In its second week at the Regent Theater is "Anna and the King of Siam," bringing to the screen one of the most fascinating stories ever to top best-seller lists. Not a Action tale, but a story based upon biographical facts, it was written by Margaret London and is re-enacted by Irene Dunne as Anna, Rex Harrison as the king and Linda Darnell as the king's favorite wife. The narrative unfolds the ad- ventures of an English woman who was called by the fabulous King Mongkut to strange and ex- otic Siam to serve as a teacher to his hundreds of harem wives and their children. The shocking, al- most medieval barbarism that ran parallel to the age-old culture and beauty of the land, and the im- periously harsh yet moody and temperamental King Mongkut could not help but have a pro- found impact on frail Anna. How, with the wonder of her Western beauty and the flame of her courage, she braved this strange world and won a triumph, makes for a thrilling motion pic- ture, it is said. The latest March of Time, "Atomic Power," is also on the Regent program. Marriage Licenses w I Savannah st, $3500. Capitol In these hectic days of vanish- ing royalty in search of new jobs, the Dennis Morgan-Jack Carson- Joan Leslie starring film, "Two Guys from Milwaukee," which opened yesterday at the Capitol Theater, is both timely and funny. The tale of a reluctant prince who gets a chance to learn about democracy in 24 incognito hours in New York, the film is a merry ltsson in how to lose a throne and win friends and influence practi- cally nobody in 90 minutes of cinematic fun and frolic. Melody, fantasy and fun pervade the companion feature, Walt Dis- ney's Technicolor film, "Make Mine Music." Having pioneered recently in the field of Latin American music and color, with Lv\0 bUcLL^Ci, OUiUuU> .tfumgO£> and "The Three Caballeros," Dis- ney has produced another new Technicolor entertainment expres- sion, for which the producer signed some of the greatest names in the show world. Noted personalities engaged for the production are Dinah Shore, Benny Goodman, his band and quartet; David Lichine and Ria- bouchinska, noted performers on the ballet stage; singers Andy Russell, Nelson Eddy, the An- drews Sisters, the King's Men, Jerry Colonna and the Pied Pipers. Century Any resemblance between Bob Hope as "Monsieur Beaucaire" in the movie of the same name, now at the Century Theater, and Ru- dolph Valentino, who starred in the silent version more than a decade ago, is guaranteed by Para- mount to be not only coincidental but also unimaginable. The com- pany had no intention of making Hope the matinee idol of the forties. A notion that Hope would be funny in knee-breeches and a | powdered wig originally stimulat- ed the re-make of t h e Booth Tark- ington comedy. When writers Norman Panama and Melvin Frank — they're the boys who scripted "Road to Uto- pia"—looked at the Valentino ver- Little The heart-warming Technicolor musical, "State Fair," based on Philip Stong's novel and starring Dana Andrews, Jeanne Crain, Dick Haymes and Vivian Blaine, is to be held over for a second week at the Little Theater. In the '46 version, Hope is a barber who poses as a duke; and that decided- ly against his will. Thus Tarking- ton's mixed identity theme is re- tained for situation comedy. Co-starred with Hope is lovely Joan Caulfleld, who scored in her first picture, "Miss Susie Slagle's." Apparel Losses Cause Decline in Factory Job Index

Seasonal l o s s e s i n m o s t branches of the apparel and t ex -tile industr ies resulted in a small net d r o p in factory employment in t h e s ta te between J u n e and Ju ly in spite of continued gains in metals, mach inery and building mater ia ls , and seasonal activity in the canning industry.

Outs tanding gains were in the food industries, acoording to the S ta te Depar tment of Labor. The canneries were employing many more workers in July than they did in June . The dairy indust ry also repor ted a substantial in -crease in employment wi th smal l -e r gains recorded for gra in-mi l l products, beverages and miscel-laneous food preparat ions. Candy factories, sugar refineries and meat packers employed fewer people in Ju ly .

T h e meta ls and machinery in -dustr ies employed approximately 1 per cent miore workers in Ju ly than in J u n e . The employment t rend w a s upward in most i ndus -tries wi th in t h e group. Increased employment was noted in the manufac ture of heat ing appa ra -tus, l umber and t imber basic p rod-ucts, paints , varnishes and colors, s t ructura l clay products and con-crete, gypsum and plaster p rod-ucts.

    RKO Palace Hoagy CarmichaeTs n e x t song

hi t may well be about a donkey. The songwriter - actor recent ly spent a n afternoon perched upon t h e back of one of these rugged individual members of t he animal k ingdom, and feels t h a t h e now knows as much about the breed as t h e chai rman of a Democrat ic County Committee.

    Carmichael spent the afternoon on t he donkey for a scene in U n i -v e r s a l e Technicolor r e l e a s e , "Canyon Passage." Wal te r W a n -ger produced t h e n e w picture , which opened yes terday a t t h e R K O Palace Theater . Dana A n -drews , Brian Donlevy and Susan H a y w a r d a re co-starred.

F r o m his perch, Hoagy was called upon to ride several h u n - ^ d red yards down a beautiful set which is said to be an accurate replica of the city of Jacksonvil le , Ore., in 1856.

    E n route he s t rummed a gui tar end chanted a chorus of a n u m b e r t h a t m a y well reach the top of the Hit Parade . At t h e conclusion of the ride, Hoagy exchanged a few words with Miss Hayward and Andrews , mounted on horses, which had plot significance.

The action lasts less than two minu tes on t he screen, ye t it took the bet ter pa r t of four hours t o photograph, with the tunesmith and the actors firm in the i r sad-dles for the en t i re t ime.

    Carmichael presents four of h is own songs in "Canyon Passage." They a re "Ole But termi lk Sky," ^Rogjje River Valley," " I 'm Ge t -t in ' li/Tarried in t he M o r n l n ' " a n d "Si lver Saddle."

J ack Brooks collaborated wi th Hoagy in composing t h e lyrics and mus ic for "Ole But termi lk Sky."

Patr ic ia Roc, Ward Bond, Andy Devine and other screen notables a r e in the supporting cast of "Can -yon Passage." The film's screen-p lay was adapted from the S a t u r -d a y Evening Post s tory by Ernes t Haycox.-

Second feature on the RKO P a l -ace bill is "The Runaround ," wi th Ella Raines and Rod Cameron.

Regent Thea te r is "Anna and the King of Siam," br inging t o the screen one of the most fascinating stories ever t o top best-seller l ists . Not a Action tale, but a s tory based upon biographical facts, i t was wri t ten by Margare t London and is re -enac ted by Irene Dunne as Anna, R e x Harrison a s the k ing and Linda Darnell as the king 's favorite wife.

    The n a r r a t i v e unfolds t he a d -ventures of an English w o m a n who was called by t h e fabulous King Mongkut to s t range a n d e x -otic S i a m to serve as a t eacher to his h u n d r e d s of ha rem wives a n d their chi ldren.
